[Bug 106382] [needs-packaging] apt-torrent

2007-04-13 Thread gQuigs
Public bug reported:

I would like to see apt-torrent packaged for Ubuntu, GG. It would allow
us to *eventually* increase the scalability of Ubuntu, possible uses
include for downloading large games.

"Apt-Torrent is an apt gateway to the BitTorrent protocol. it can be
used as a backend for any application which use apt like apt-get,
aptitude, synaptic, kpackage, ...etc. Apt-Torrent run as a multithread
daemon providing an httpd server and a BitTorrent client. The goals and
benefits of the application is to provide a simple and efficient way to
share the Debian distribution among users and to second main mirrors
spreading new packages. Each computer running apt-torrent can take part
in its distribution."

I have a HP Compaq nx6325 with ATI Radeon Xpress 200M and my KDE (or X.org)
completely freezes when I try to shutdown or restart the system (and then I can
only power off my laptop).
The issue is not present when:
a) I switch from fglrx to ati driver
b) I restart the X server (ctrl-alt-backspace) before logging in.
But switching to consoles 1-6 works fine.
I'm using vga=791 too.

[Bug 106379] retracer should set importance of bugs

2007-04-13 Thread Brian Murray
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

After marking a bug 'need-i386-retrace' I wait around for the bug to get
retraced and then set the importance of the bug to medium if the retrace
is useful. I believe dholbach and seb128 do the same. It would be nice
if the retracer could set the importance for us. My criteria for the
retrace being useful is quite low, I just make sure it isn't
"StacktraceTop:?? ()".

[Bug 106376] Network Manager stops working randomly with Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop

2007-04-13 Thread Derick Eisenhardt
Public bug reported:

Network Manager (Gnome) works perfectly at first after booting the
system, but then it will apparently shut down after random intervals
(anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour of use). The icon in my Notification
Area disappears and my network ceases to be connected.

I am using it on a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop with an Intel wireless card
(internal wired ethernet device is physically broken). The wireless
connection is WPA1 encrypted if that matters somehow. I'm currently
using Network-Manager 0.6.4-6ubuntu7 with Ubuntu 7.04 (feisty).

[Bug 90267] Re: network-manager stops and restarts already ifup'ed interfaces

2007-04-13 Thread James
The ntp devs refuse to do a normal wild card bind and stick with what
they have done. This has come up in comp.protocols.time.ntp quite a few
times. Which I think led to the new interface scanning code in ntp 4.2.4
which has it's own problems when ntp is started before the network is
up. I mentioned this in my 2007-03-10 post.

Starting ntp before the network is up also breaks name resolution for
any servers that are specified by name. How can a server name be
resolved to ip if the network is not up yet? The following is valid

server ntp.ubuntu.com
server 0.au.pool.ntp.org
server 1.au.pool.ntp.org
server 2.au.pool.ntp.org

but wil fail because the dns can not be reached because the network is
not up.

These problems disappear if ntp is not started until after the network
is up.

[Bug 104903] Re: metacity fails to show any window decorations after dist-upgrade from edgy to feisty

2007-04-13 Thread Albert Cardona

Yes: in the past I installed, used for a week or so, and then uninstalled with
--purge) beryl and Xgl.

I have tried to move .dmrc elsewhere to no avail. On relogin to a gnome
session, a new .dmrc gets created with a 'default' instead of 'gnome'
session.

After the last dist-upgrade yesterday, gnome does not even boot fully:
the screen remains orange for at least 2 minutes, with the gnome splash
showing two icons and "Metacity window manager" as text, which
disappears on click. The desktop never shows. I have to kill the X
server to get out.

So matters got worse.

[Bug 106373] Warning for development version updates

2007-04-13 Thread Paul McGarry
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Maybe when a user is using a development version of Ubuntu the text
displayed in update-manager:

"Software updates correct errors, eliminate security vulnerabilities and
provide new features."

could be replaced with something like

"This is a development version of Ubuntu. Updates may introduce new
errors as development continues."

This might help manage user expectations and head off some of the angst
in the rare cases that something like bug 106371 occurs.

Maybe even display it in red ;)

[Bug 20195] Re: Laptop doesn't resume after S3

2007-04-13 Thread Greg Toombs
I can confirm that I have had a similar problem of failure to resume
from suspend, and changing POST_VIDEO to false and SAVE_VBE_STATE to
false fixed it. I have a Toshiba A100 laptop with ATI graphics.

[Bug 54457] Re: Synaptics Touchpad driver cannot be loaded in xorg

2007-04-13 Thread ferd
I've noticed the "Synaptics Touchpad no synaptics event device found" in
/var/log/Xorg.0.log as well while I was trying to get the Synaptics
mouse pad on my Toshiba Satellite 5200 to work properly (it seems that
after having upgraded to Feisty - in beta as of today - the mouse
pointer on my machine likes to jump nine times out of ten like it used
to in earlier Edgy versions whenever my finger touches the pad too far
off center - the direction it jumps on the screen corresponds with the
offset of my finger from the pad center which can drive you crazy).

I've uninstalled KSynaptics after attempts it would help me fix the
jumpy mouse pointer had failed and my mental sanity was endangered.
Ksynaptics kept reporting annoying error messages about missing
SHMConfig setting despite it's included in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "InputDevice"
  Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad"
  Driver "synaptics"
  option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
  option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
  option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
  option "HorizScrollDelta" "0"
  option "SHMConfig" "on"
EndSection

Since it's been around for a while I strongly suggest to have this
bug/feature looked at. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Ferd

[Bug 106371] linux-image-2.6.20-15-generic won't boot

2007-04-13 Thread Frank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-15-generic

After today's update to linux-image-2.6.20-15 feisty fawn does not boot.
Boot in save mode displays:
...
...
sata_nv :00:07.0: Using ADMA mode
ata1: SATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0xf88e2480 ctl 0xf88e24a0 bmdma 0x0001d400 irq 21
ata2: SATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0xf88e2580 ctl 0xf88e25a0 bmdma 0x0001d408 irq 21
scsi0 : sata_nv
usb 1-1: new ful speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 2
ata1: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300)

At this point the boot process stopps and a hard power of is necessary.

The same occur with linux-image-2.6.20-14 (the latest one).
I could temporarily solve this error for 2.6.20-14 by replacing
initrd.img-2.6.20-14-generic through initrd.img-2.6.20-14-generic.bak from
Thursday 12th or Friday 13th. (I don't now the exact date)

You will find a attachment of lspci -vv and dmesg.log from the last
linux-image-2.6.20-14-generic with replaced nitrd.img-2.6.20-14-generic.

Please note, that this doesn't occur on my Thinkpad Z61m

[Bug 106372] problem with hpa in libata in feisty 2.6.20-14

2007-04-13 Thread LeifJohansson
Public bug reported:

After upgrade to feisty fawn from edgy eft my T23 and T42p won't boot
the new 2.6.20-14 kernel due to the fact that the kernel disables the
ata1.00 device due to revalidation failed errors (I'm typing by hand
from the screen of the T23):

ata1.00: n_sectors mismatch  !=
ata1.00: revalidation failed (errno=-19)
ata1.00: disabled

After this the boot scripts sit and wait for the root fs to turn up and when
that times out I'm left in the (initramfs) shell. Both laptops boot older
kernels
from edgy with no problem.

I'm just back from hollyday.
Before my hollyday I did a new install bud didn't do any updates.
Tomorrow I will try to update because it will take some time (203 updates).

I will turn the autologin off before the new update, since the last time the
login password was proberly not taken over correctly and than it keeps saying
wrongpassword and you can't fill in another password.
(the loginname was taken correcly I think because the number of digits was
right.)

[Bug 106367] input in terminal widget doesn't work

2007-04-13 Thread Francis J. Lacoste
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I used the KDE frontend to dist-upgrade.py to update to Feisty.

After the packages are downloaded, the progress kind of halt. I clicked
on the 'Show Terminal' button and saw that a pager invoked by apt-
listchanges was displayed. What I typed appear in the terminal window,
but didn't seem to be sent to the pager. To my surprise, I discovered
that the pager input was still attached to the terminal I used to start
the command.

I hit q in konsole and was thus able to continue.

I then got a debconf prompt, same thing, it accepted input only from the
shell terminal used to start dist-upgrade.py. Later on, though a new
debconf prompt appear and this time, it didn't accept input from
anywhere.

I kill the upgrade and restarted using the text frontend (because the
kde frontend was now busted because of packages that were upgraded.)

[Bug 103119] Re: Screen blank after hibernate

2007-04-13 Thread Matthew Flower
I think I have nailed down some important information about the bug. In
order to reproduce, you need to hibernate, then close the lid of your
laptop right away. (You don't have to slam it, but close it prior to x
windows unloading.)

I assume the problem occurs because the screen is normally turned off
whenever I close my laptop. When I return from hibernation, I've
already opened the lid because I needed to turn on the computer. X
never receives the "I opened the lid" event though. This means nothing
has told my computer to turn the screen back on.

My guess is that this isn't specific to my Tecra. It would probably
occur on any model.

I can understand that the "forward" command is disabled if there is no
forward page. But in this case it is impossible to perform the command.
But the "reset zoom level to normal" is always possible to perform, even
if it's already at "normal".

A carpenter doesn't know that the nail is all the way down by the hammer
going away, he can still hit the nail, it just won't do any good..

I as a user want the comfort of knowing that the commands I use is
available to me, even if others think of me as stupid for using them.

It's the same thing with the "save" command in some programs. I want to
be able to tell the program "I don't care that I haven't changed
anything since last save, just do whatever you do with whats there now
and write it to disk."

It's somewhat similar to the thing MS does where they collapse menus so
only used commands is shown. I read some paper where they found that
most user had a bad experience from that. It's all about the comfort of
a stable interface.

[Bug 102290] Re: Video does not work with Desktop Effects enabled

2007-04-13 Thread Lean Fuglsang
Mike I can confirm that it behaves exactly the same. The first video
opened works 'some times' but not very often. The second video opened
works no matter what you do with it.

[Bug 106063] Re: MASTER: Computer will not boot after 2.6.20-14.23 kernel upgrade

2007-04-13 Thread Andrew Frank
i have still a problem, because i have only a 6.10 installation running
and cannot follow the advice to chroot and then apt-get, because -- it
seems -- under 6.10 the look for apt is in /var/lib/apt/lists/look and
under 7.04 it is in /var/lib/look.

can i just create the directory /var/lib/apt/lists? then it could create
the look file and do the update?

advice welcome!
andrew
