Re: [Bug 106308] Re: All 'windows' are missing their 'frames and the panel in general is not working correctly

2007-04-22 Thread Bill Hand
OK... It looks like it all comes down to Nautilus crashing and it seems
like it has to do with moving files around in the 'File Browser' on the
'right of' screen. All desktop icons disappear and once I click 'ok' in
the below fault window, Nautilus starts back up and one File Browser
window, no matter how many I had open, comes back up, but on the main
screen. Also part of this, is that right clicking on any 'window frame'
such as to 'move to a different desktop' causes both screens to cycle
through each open window on each desktop; I have four desktops for each
of the two screens.

The other thing is that when it does all this, including crashing, it
isn't generating a crash report anymore and I know I didn't tell it not
to; I believe that is a selection when the bug report thingy comes up.
I'm not sure how to check that, though, or where I can reset it.

Anyway... below is the fault window that comes up:

"Nautilus can't be used now, due to an unexpected error." is the
'window' heading

and the 'details' are:

Nautilus can't be used now, due to an unexpected error from Bonobo when
attempting to locate the factory.Killing bonobo-activation-server and
restarting Nautilus may help fix the problem.

and as I said, when I click on the ok, Nautilus comes back up.

[Bug 108484] Re: Desktop size larger than display

2007-04-22 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Maurizio:
This is down to monitor probing techniques. The windows drivers (and in fact
the linux nvidia binary drivers) probes for resolutions differently to the nv
driver.

Using DVI will probably work around this because the monitor knows
exactly where the picture starts and finishes so there's never any need
to tune the picture size or centring.

[Bug 83079] Re: Laptop doesn't go sleep *always*

2007-04-22 Thread kmARC
Hello again, now I'm from a fresh installed Kubuntu Feisty Fawn. The
suspend-to-ram thing don't works at all, but I can give some new infos.

1. There is an other Computer, it's a Clevo M540N StyleNote, with the
same Intel (ICH7, 945GM, whatever, give a look at formerly posted
lspci), but it has a newer BIOS, dated to November (as I remember).
Neither works the suspend on that machine, the problem is the same.

2.a I make some investigations with the uswsusp package. s2ram -f -a 3 or s2ram
-f -p -m works with this model and motherboard "properly", and more reliably
than Ubuntu's default, but the failure didn't go away, after a long
suspend-to-ram when I try to put again it to sleep, it hangs.
2.b I wanted to try out the latest uswsusp-0.5 package from
http://suspend.sourceforge.net/, but when trying to compile it, it throws
errors about undefined references to libpci.a's undefined
gz/open/close/error/etc.

3. There is a post at the lkml saying: "ata_piix survives exactly one suspend
resume cylce. " - http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/1/27/151
My problem is not exactly the same, but I think it is a good point to start
from.
[kmarc][~][$] lsmod | grep ata_piix
ata_piix 15492 5
libata125720 2 ata_generic,ata_piix

These experiences have been shared with the suspend-devel mailing list
yesterday, but there isn't any answers yet.

[Bug 93579] Re: Screen Resolution is less than before

2007-04-22 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
The /var/log/Xorg.0.log file usually contains information for the
current running X (if one is still running) or the last run X (if X is
stopped entirely). If are running with the nv drivers, change the config
to the nvidia binary driver, restart X then look at the log file it will
be for the nvidia binary drivers. One way round this is to copy the log
file to a different file (say in your home directory) while it is
actually using nv and in the wrong resolution.

[Bug 107782] Re: X Crash after nVidia GeForce 5700 drivers installed

2007-04-22 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Oh no... NVRM: Xids...

Lucian:
Xid's are basically error messages produced by the nvidia binary driver to
indicate something unexpected happened. They are only really of use to NVIDIA
engineers so your best bet is to talk to NVIDIA about this. There is a forum
their folks read over here:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=14 . There's a chance that
these are linked to the slowness you are seeing (as the driver might be
encountering errors and then having to recover).

Are you using desktop-effects/beryl/compiz?

[Bug 109155] workrave's counter does not update

2007-04-22 Thread dwg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: workrave

In Feisty, workrave's "rest break" countdown in the panel no longer
decrements visibly. It still appears to count down internally, and will
eventually pop up the "take a rest" dialog", however the on-screen
counter never changes, except occasionally when some exceptional event
forces a redraw (such as logging in again).

** Affects: workrave (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed

[Bug 109157] ccontrol SEGVs on startup

2007-04-22 Thread dwg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ccontrol

In Feisty, ccontrol as built from the current ccontrol package gets a
Segmentation Fault immediately after exec(), before executing any other
system calls.

This appears to be because Feisty has made gcc implement stack
protection by default, which is incompatible with dietlibc, used by
ccontrol. Either ccontrol needs to be built with -fno-stack-protector
(after which it works), or dietlibc needs to be updated so that it copes
with the gcc stack protector logic.

 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed

[Bug 106691] Re: [nvidia-glx] glitches appear when using Twinview with compiz/beryl and the gnome-panel at the top is not set to "expand"

2007-04-22 Thread eppy 1
Hmm. On a single monitor with nvidia, I don't see glitches, but the
whole top of the screen (where one my panels NOT expanded is) is
"locked", so I can't start making a drag selection box on the desktop
from that position. When I turn Beryl on, it just goes black, and then
I start getting glitches if I move windows across it. With Twinview, I
get the glitches on both monitors across the top.

It seems like a weird combo of the nvidia drivers and gnome-panel.

[Bug 88905] Re: No hardware rendering for "SuperSavage/IXC 64" and "Xorg 7.2"

2007-04-22 Thread Joachim Frieben
@catchit

What model is your notebook exactly? Is direct rendering supported by
the "X" server as reported in "Xorg.0.log"? Did you ever manage to get
direct rendering work for previous releases? Do you still obtain the
error message:

...
libGL error: drmMap of framebuffer failed (Invalid argument)
libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering
 display: :0 screen: 0
 direct rendering: No
 ... ?

I have an "IBM ThinkPad T23" like Giorgio. For older models T20-T22,
success is less certain. Also make sure that the video memory is
sufficient for direct rendering. Try "16bpp" and a resolution like
"1024x768" to start with.

[Bug 105971] Re: [Xubuntu feisty daily live, 11042007] Installer locks up the system at "Detecting file systems"

2007-04-22 Thread tresoldi
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 70561 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/70561

I can confirm this for Kubuntu too. I tried burning the CD again at the
lowest speed possible; I tried many different hard disk partition
configurations (including wiping out the entire disk), and no
difference. I have 256 of memory (16 shared), so I first tried setting
up an absurd 4gb swap partition; no luck. I then tried running the
minimum possible number of processes (killed everything from the
console: klipper, arts, kicker, etc. etc.) but it still hangs at 15%,
"Detecting file systems". I should mention that Kubuntu and Xubuntu 6.10
do not appear to have the same problem in the same machine.

Using "--debug" did not show anything interesting.

2007-04-22 Thread John Vance
Ditto.

Running Kubuntu Feisty, both with and without Beryl, using native nVidia
support (no AIGLX or xgl)

Sometimes after logging out, the Kubuntu shutdown progress bar appears
momentarily, and then I'm left with a blank screen with a cursor top
left. Keyboard input is echoed to the screen but that's it for
functionality.

It appears to happen more often when using "switch user"

[Bug 84721] Re: [Feisty Fawn] konqueror doesn't open url but save

2007-04-22 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
This bug still exitst on a fresh install of Feisty Kubuntu: Looks like
it's able to open any address the user writes, but fails when you click
on a link: It asks where to save the file or what program to use to open
the file (suggests Kate). Opening in a new tab works ok.

This happens for example on all wikipedia links so I don't think it's a
server side problem.

I have installed latest Swiftfox so I'd guess there is a possibility
that it has changed something but looks weird to me anyway.

[Bug 109154] AMSN gets lost in the gnome-panel

2007-04-22 Thread ml2
Public bug reported:

When I "close" AMSN with the top-right cross, it should minimize to the
notification area, but it just gets lost often. That means I have no
access to it at all. When I try to open AMSN again, it says: already
connected. It also takes forever for it to load at startup and it
actually does not appear on the notification area at all.

I have installed the system from LinuxMint Bea rc and later upgraded
changing the edgy entries in the sources.list to feisty.

[Bug 16414] Re: All themes fail to indicate mousedown on scrollbar thumbs and sliders

2007-04-22 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
** Description changed:

- Steps to reproduce:
- 1. Choose any of the themes shipped with Ubuntu, including the default.
- 2. Mouse down on a slider or a scrollbar thumb.
+ 1. Switch to the Human theme if not already using it. (The problem also
occurs with other themes, but I'm most concerned about the default theme.)
+ 2. Mouse down on a button (e.g. "Help" in Power Management Preferences).
+- Observe that it goes darker to show that you're clicking it.
+ 3. Mouse down on a checkbox (e.g. "Use sound to notify" in Power Management
Preferences).
+- Observe that it goes darker to show that you're clicking it.
+ 4. Mouse down on a radio button (e.g. "Always display an icon" in Power
Management Preferences).
+- Observe that it goes darker to show that you're clicking it.
+ 5. Mouse down on a slider (e.g. "Set display brightness to:" in Power
Management Preferences), or on a scrollbar thumb.
+- Observe that ... nothing happens.

- What should happen:
- * The control changes color to confirm that you're dragging it (as opposed
to,
- say, having clicked on the pixel immediately above it by mistake).
+ There is no apparent reason for this inconsistency. I'm aware that other
+ OSes also make this mistake (for example Windows 95/98/2000 got it wrong
+ but Windows XP got it right, and Mac OS 8/9 got it right but Mac OS X
+ gets it wrong). But it's more important to be internally consistent than
+ consistent with other OSes. And it would be quite easy to fix: make the
+ thumb or slider a bit darker while it is being clicked.

- What actually happens:
- * Nothing.
+ This bug has nothing to do with mouseover effects, just mousedown
+ feedback.

I have a similar problem, except unplugging and pluggin the mouse back

[Bug 109152] totem spawn many error alerts about unsupported files

2007-04-22 Thread Alexander Sashnov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Steps for reproduce:

1. run totem
2. drag-and-drop folder with non-media files, for example, folder with some
.tag.gz files

Totem will display one alert per file with text: "Totem could not play
'file://.' There is no plugin to handle this movie".

This is not a problem for one, two or three files.

But this is critical for big folder with many of non-multimedia files.

Solution:
Show all errors in one dialog as a table with two columns:

Following files was not added to playlist

[Bug 93509] Re: xorg fails with ati driver with feisty on Apple ppc (post herd5 update)

2007-04-22 Thread dwg
I've hit this problem as well on a G5 with Radeon, in Feisty final.
Driver package version is 6.6.3-2ubuntu6.

With Ben Herrenschmidt's help, tracked the problem down to an Ubuntu
patch which adds some VBE based DDC probing code to the driver as a
fallback. That gets triggered on powerpc, and VBE attempts to load
int10 which fails horribly, hanging the machine.

Attached patch fixes the problem by disabling the vbe code on powerpc,
though I don't know that it's really a correct fix.

[Bug 94130] Re: apport fails to use environment proxy configuration

2007-04-22 Thread Ali Sabil
That is because the https_proxy env variable is not set (which is also a
bug in gnome-terminal) and apport makes use of urllib, which implements
dumb non standard support for HTTP proxies (basicaly it will issue GET
https:// HTTP/1.0 instead of doing a CONNECT followed by a GET)

The solution would be to drop the usage of python's urllib.

2007-04-22 Thread frank
Hi Scott,

Thanks for re-opening the bug (and for the time you are devoting to
Ubuntu)!

Yes, installing (by hand) python-dev provides a complete workaround for
my situation. That is why including python-dev in the "depends" list
*should* provide a fix for the bug for the apt/dpkg system.

BTW, I'm an experienced Python developer and Debian/Ubuntu user. If
there are any python-related bugs in Feisty that you might wish to toss
my way, perhaps I can help in the bug triage-ing, or even the odd patch
or two for simple stuff like this...

Cheers,
Frank Horowitz

Thanks for the response. I've reopened the bug.

Once you installed python-dev the test program works for you (I'm short
of time at the moment and so did not yet run your test case - thanks for
that though, I'll use it to verify the fix later)?

No, I don't use f2py. There are thousands of packages in Ubuntu and not
nearly so many bug triagers/fixers (I'm probably both in this case).
Your input is very valuable on such things. Thanks again.

Re: [Bug 106092] Re: DemocracyPlayer has no audio...

2007-04-22 Thread Bill Hand
I'm using totem-gstreamer now as I was having problems with the xine
player and I changed it out trying to get it back, (xine), working;
ended up having to rename the xine directory and doing a fresh install.
Xine works fine now, but still the no audio in Democracy. Everything
but Democracy seems to be playing fine. It is safe to say that
Democracy doesn't have audio with either of those two. (The xine crash
was due to me playing with audio drivers and selections in the xine
settings.)

I am running Feisty also, on a 3.2 Intel with a gig of RAM and GeForce
6800 with two 19" flat panels; I have been using Feisty from about the
halfway point, before release; following all the upgrades, almost daily
for the last three months or so. It worked perfect until the Python 2.5
upgrade and really never has worked right since then. I was able to
fake it out for a little bit but something else got upgraded, (can't
remember what right this minute, (poss dbus) that was the end of it) and
the patches only got the web portion back going so I could download the
feeds, but it wouldn't play them; I typically use xine to play the
downloads.

Even at that, there is still the issue of it crashing all the time, and
it seems like I am not the only one having both of these problems;
something is just a bittt flakey with it yet; hard to tell if the no
audio and crashes are related or not; I tend to think that it very well
MAY BE related; get the audio working completely right and it just might
quit crashing; pure speculation on my part, but still

Bill

[Bug 96302] Re: kppp crashes on "Initializing modem"

2007-04-22 Thread Sereg@
Feel some frustration: kppp crashes due to stack overflow when modem commands
are empty values in kppprc.
So we need to fix this situation with some defaults values or prevent
connection with empty modem command.
Funny that I have no idea how such config was created.
I need to to discuss it with more experienced kubuntu developers.

I installed Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) on April 20, 2007 (from the
offical desktop cd release) and I have been able to reproduce this bug
in several gnome apps. I am using the WindowMaker window manager
(installed from the Feisty repos) and I can confirm this bug. However,
when I log out of WindowMaker and log into gnome, this bug does not
appear. I re-installed WindowMaker and used a fresh setup and this bug

(snip)

[Bug 105697] Re: VMWare Player guest OS and Host Kubuntu cannot SSH into each other

2007-04-22 Thread Thrift
I don't know about the original poster, but I have fixed this issue on
my machine.

Apparently with feisty there is an update to the e1000 driver that
enables some functionality on the card that vmware doesn't take kindly
too. I couldn't find any options with modinfo that would make e1000 act
like it used too. The card works great for everything but vmware.

I simply installed a new card and disabled the onboard card in bios,
edited /etc/iftab with the new cards mac address for eth0, rebooted and
the issue was gone.

[Bug 109144] (Feisty) Eclipse 3.2.2, Subclipse 1.2.x , JavaHL library error

2007-04-22 Thread HunkyBill
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libapr1

Feisty 7.04 installed. Eclipse 3.2.2 from Feisty Universe repositories.
Sun Java JRE-6u1 installed. Installed Subclipse 1.2.x from update site.
In Eclipse, Windows->prefs->Team->SVN immediately pops an error about
not finding JavaHL library. This make Subclipse almost useless as JavaHL
binding is necessary for repository access.

This problem was sort of fixed when libapr0 was built with a line
D_XOPEN_SOURCE=500 to the AP2_FLAGS. I tried this technique again, but
no libapr was provided when rebuilding???

Is there some way to get this resolved, or some answer as to why the old
technique no longer works. Is there something changed in how Apache 2.2
build the APR??

[Bug 108593] Re: HP dv2000 laptop does not resume while in suspended state

2007-04-22 Thread Brian Murray
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description doesn't yet
have enough information.
Please include the following additional information, if you have not already
done so (please pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by
the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command 'uname -a' in your next response.
It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version
you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command 'dmesg > dmesg.log' and attach the resulting file
'dmesg.log' to this bug report.
3. Please run the command 'sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log' and attach the
resulting file 'lspci-vvnn.log' to this bug report.
For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug
reports is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks
in advance!

[Bug 96754] Re: Atheros 5212 NIC Fails to Connect in Feisty

2007-04-22 Thread Stephan Hermann
I can confirm this.

Feistz with linux-image-2.6.20-9 is working out of the box, and the
release kernel not.

[Bug 99359] Re: planetpenguin-racer does not show text

2007-04-22 Thread cyber_rigger
Same here. I did an upgrade from edgy to feisty using Update manager
(I have not tried this with a fresh install of feisty yet).

Ppracer just shows just a few faint dots of garbage where the menu text
should be.

I am using a Matrox g400 video card with the mga driver.

Then I used
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
to switch to the vesa driver.

Could this be a problem in mga?
There were some mga issues in edgy.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-mga/+bug/58721

When I used the vesa driver the menu text showed normally, but without
the 3d acceleration, the game is too slow to play.

Steps to reproduce with Feisty:

1. Use a Matrox g400 video card
2. Use the mga driver
3. Start ppracer
4. Observe that there is no readable menu text

(My kids love this game. Please fix.)

The Matrox g400 has worked well in the past for me
using ppracer with Debian on the same machine (AMD Sempron).

[Bug 85315] Re: Please reenable CONFIG_PRISM54 again

2007-04-22 Thread Guy K. Kloss
I've also have had problems with the 2.6.20.15.27 (-generic) that came
with the now stable Feisty on my laptop. The Prism54 based PCMCIA card
(Netgear WG511) just wouldn't work with the modules provided by the
kernel (prism54pci, prism54common, and prism54usb). What finally did
work was baking my own kernel from the kernel-source package with all
the default debian options/configs for i386 in tact. I only enabled the
line "PRISM54=m". Then I could finally unload Ubuntu's p54 modules (from
the ubuntu/wireless tree in the kernel modules directory) and modprobe
the normal/ole prism54 which works like a charm again.

Hopefully this helps others as well ...
