[Bug 120493] firefox crashes when download window pop ups or opening preferences from edit menu

2007-06-14 Thread Parthan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mozilla-firefox

Firefox v2.0.0.4 - latest update from the repos for Ubuntu Fesity.

When the download window pop ups when trying to either download or save
something, the firefox window closes/exits off. This happens when trying
to open the preferences from the Edit menu also. I am able to reproduce
this bug by trying to download/save anything from a link or by trying to
open the preferences menu.

Where I have to look for the error logs to help you get more insight on
this?

[Bug 120494] [needs-packaging/inclusion] gutenpy

2007-06-14 Thread PeterDurrill
Public bug reported:

Gutenpy is "A text reader and catalog browser for Project Gutenberg", I
think that the value of such a package would be self-evident.

Feisty includes "gutenbrowser" in the repositories, but this uses qt,
not gtk, and the interface is less than friendly.

Gutenpy is stable with an easy to understand interface. While debian
does not include (nor, based on the "work needed" and "prospective
packages" pages, does it intend to include) gutenpy, there is a deb
package included on the gutenpy site (http://gutenpy.sourceforge.net/)
which will work in ubuntu 7.04. This would indicate to me that there are
no additional dependancies which could not be met by the current repo
offerings.

[Bug 118163] Re: Freezes with VIA KM400/VT8378 (regression)

2007-06-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 43154 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/43154

Hi narr,

This sounds much like bug 43154, which you've already commented on, so
I'm marking this a dupe of that one. There are some slight symptom
differences, however I suspect it's the same root cause, just different
symptoms due to differing hardware. The upstream bug at freedesktop.org
(5092) does not sound like it's going to get fixed soon, though. Using
the downgraded mesa libs is probably the best option for now.

There is a new 6.5.3 mesa out, which is available in Gutsy, and we're
hoping to see Mesa 7.0 out soon as well, so you could test those when
they arrive. However, it sort of sounds like the issue is in the via
driver, which unfortunately doesn't sound like it's been getting much
developer attention.

[Bug 105405] Re: kino 1.0.0

2007-06-14 Thread Jason Fergus
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 77000 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/77000

Debian Experimental currently has the 1.0.0 release. Unfortunately it
depends upon libquicktime1 and libfaad0. When I tried to install these,
they removed gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse libquicktimehv and
libfaad2-0 and cinelerra

So I removed those, installed from Debian Sid the libfaad0 and
libfaad2-0 then I could re-install the packages that were removed.

Looks like the problem here is that libfaad2-0 is old in Gutsy, the
version is 2.0.0+cvs20040908+mpv2+bmp-0ubuntu5 (wow, talk about long
package version!) and the one in Debian Sid is 2.5-4 and there is no
libfaad0 in Gutsy. I installed the libquicktime1 and kino from Debian
experimental. libfaad0 and libfaad2-0 were from Sid.

Unfortunately kino still freezes when I start it up, though it was doing
that before as well. I think for some reason udev doesn't set the
permissions correctly on my camcorder anyhow (root.disk instead of
root.video) I had kino working when I set the permissions to the latter.
But now it's just freezing, I'll try a restart to see if that helps at
all.

[Bug 114941] Re: xorg.conf gets (wrongly) overwritten after hardware crash

2007-06-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Richard,

If the startup script fails to start X, it generally displays a rather
ugly text mode dialog telling you something went wrong and shows you the
errors. It doesn't regenerate xorg.conf. In fact, this is something
I've worked on this past week, which is why I know we don't already have
the capability: http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/BulletProofX/

However there are a number of tools which will reconfigure your
xorg.conf (sometimes with disastrous results). These comprise tools
generally associated with binary drivers. I suspect that installing one
of these drivers may cause an automatic change to your xorg.conf to
switch to that driver, but I'm not 100% sure. However these automatic
changes don't usually result in a completely incorrect xorg.conf. Other
tools that do overwrite xorg.conf with their own generally are not run
automatically; they'd be something you ran specifically. For instance,
displayconfig-gtk (shown in the screenshots above), as well as config
tools provided by the binary driver providers. I believe running 'X
-configure' will do this as well.

Anyway, since we can't reproduce this easily, it'd be pretty difficult
to diagnose what exactly happened. My best guess is like I gave before,
that an upgrade triggered an xorg reconfiguration event. There is a
corner case I know of in Feisty where Ubuntu will successfully generate
a proper xorg.conf during the installation process, but will not install
the tool needed to correctly reconfigure xorg.conf later. Fortunately
that particular scenario has already been fixed in Gutsy, so if I'm
right, the problem is already taken care of.

In any case, if you do run into this again, please reopen the bug.
Thanks again!

[Bug 118225] Re: ATI FireGL V5200 not working at all

2007-06-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
Here are a few different things to try:

1. Run "sudo dpkg-reconfe xserver-xorg", and choose only the 640x480
mode (or the 800x600 mode)

2. Install and run displayconfig-gtk
 sudo apt-get install displayconfig-gtk
 sudo displayconfig-gtk

Use this tool to select the correct graphics card and monitor.
Hopefully displayconfig-gtk will auto-detect them, but if not you can
select them from the GUI. You might try selecting Plug 'n' Play. note
that this is a new program very early in development, so it has bugs and
may not work at all. But it would be great if it can do it.

3. Tell me the make and model of your monitor, and the output from these
commands, and I'll do some more investigation:
discover --disable=serial,parallel,usb,ide,scsi --format="%V %M\t%S\t%D\n"
video
sudo ddcprobe
sudo xresprobe vesa

era, great, thanks for the extra details.

Could you test one other thing - install the xserver-xorg-video-intel

see if that makes the problem go away.

Also, if you wouldn't mind burning a CD of Ubuntu Gutsy Tribe 1 and
testing that it could be a big help, since the upstream bug reports this
fixed in the -intel driver we include in Gutsy.

[Bug 119688] Re: Screen goes blank and computer becomes unresponsive.

2007-06-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hmm, no prob, I can do the poking around to find the dupe bugs, if you
can give me some information.

Can you please attach your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file? I can use this to
find what driver you're running. Also, please include the output from
the following command: discover --disable=serial,parallel,usb,ide,scsi
--format="%V %M\t%S\t%D\n" video

Also, can you check your screensaver settings and see if you have any 3D
screensavers ("OpenGL") active? If I recall correctly, in Dapper the
screensaver by default cycled randomly through different screensavers,
which could cause crashes very similar to what you experienced, on some
graphics hardware. Changing the screensaver settings solves that
problem. In Feisty we set things to not do this by default, so this
particular issue won't happen in the future.

[Bug 120497] /dev/dm inode missing

2007-06-14 Thread encbladexp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: partimage

After installing partimage the first time with "aptitude install
partimage" i get asked "Inode Missing" -> "/dev/dm inode doesn't exists.
Partimage can create this for you. You can also usw the manual mknod
command. Do you want this inode to be created for you YES NO", but
partimage is in a endless-loop, yes or no does noting! My System using
Ubuntu 6.06 LTS, with all Updates!

2007-06-14 Thread ahwayakchih
Here sound works, but it doesn't remember sound volume setting, and defaults to
almost highest after each boot :(
I get the same BIOS bug when booting.

Specs:

Benq P52EG (http://benq.pl/products/joybook/?product=717&page=specifications)
AMD Sempron 3400+
Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn

Volume COntrol panel says it's Realtec ALC262 sound chipset here. Device

[Bug 119975] Re: TV output support failure on Santa-rosa with Crestline

2007-06-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hmm, it sounds like the TV out works ok with the framebuffer but not
with X for some reason.

Please attach /etc/X11/xorg.conf, /var/log/Xorg.0.log after attempting
to display on the TV, and the output from lspci -vvm.

[Bug 119961] Re: Incorrect Rotation result on Screen Resolution with Crestline on Santa Rosa

2007-06-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Kevin,

One other piece of info - unfortunately the lspci didn't reveal the
particulars of your graphics chipset. Is it using intel graphics? If
so, could you try installing xorg-xserver-video-intel and changing
"vesa" to "intel" in your xorg.conf, and see if it works?

Even if that does fix it, this presents two bugs - first why did the
installer not detect and setup your card properly, and second, why isn't
xrandr working properly with the vesa driver?

Oh, one other thing to try, just out of curiosity: try booting X with
no /etc/X11/xorg.conf present. Xorg is able to detect things
automatically a lot better than it used to, although I don't know if the
Xorg in feisty is good enough.

[Bug 119944] Re: [Gutsy] Tribe 1 installer gives blank video during boot

2007-06-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 3731 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/3731

Ah, I think I see what the problem is. Since it didn't detect the
monitor, it set the wrong resolutions up. This is a dupe of 3731
apparently.

Change your screen section to look like this:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "ATI Technologies, Inc. X700"
Monitor "Default"
DefaultDepth24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 1
Modes "1680x1050"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 4
Modes "1680x1050"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1680x1050"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 15
Modes "1680x1050"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1680x1050"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1680x1050"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Alternately, install and run displayconfig-gtk as root, and test out
correcting the resolutions through that GUI tool. We'll probably be
having people use this approach for fixing these resolution issues from
now on.

[Bug 120214] Re: Faulty reporting of free space with Sony Ericsson z710

2007-06-14 Thread James Henstridge
I've committed a fix for this in r46. The capability parser now notes
if valid free and used space values appeared for a memory type, and the
VFS method will not report a free space value if none exist for the
selected memory type.

This should fix the file copying problem on your Z710. I am still
interested in data from your older phone for the test suite, if you can
provide it.

petr, hapee: this bug is clearly not a crasher. if your app crashes, you

[Bug 120493] Report Needed

2007-06-14 Thread Hilario J. Montoliu \(hjmf\)
Thank you Parthan for submitting this report.

We need a report with debug symbols. Could you please try to obtain a
backtrace by following the instructions on [1], or upload the *FULL*
crash report that probably was generated during the crash and that
should be located at /var/crash/ to [2].

Please indicate which extensions/plugins do you have enabled; and if
this crash is reproducible describe the steps that lead to it (it is
very important for us to have a test case for each crash).

This will greatly aid us in tracking down your problem.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 119467] Re: make non-essential packages Recommends and not Depends

2007-06-14 Thread Martin Pitt
This should rougly follow the approach of ubuntu-desktop: applications
which can be considered 'optional' for a KDE desktop and are likely to
be replaced with an alternative by many users should become a
Recommends. Those are still installed by default, but changing a single
application won't break updates any more.

E. g. in Ubuntu we did this for evolution and firefox because many
people prefer thunderbird and epiphany. We also did it for network-
manager, since it breaks for many users, and they should be able to
uninstall it without much fuss. Other good candidates are CJK fonts,
documentation, etc.
