Micah,

I found the grub docs, as per bug #51564.
I'll look to see if it looks like I can get grub to do what I want.

[Bug 121282] Re: Beryl doesnt start

2007-06-21 Thread bagh1
Attaching my xorg.conf.
No errors show up anywhere besides the ones that I listed above (or maybe I
wasn't looking anywhere besides /var/log)
I tried Beryl with options like "no force window manager" etc but to no avail.

Brian, thanks for the data. So far hal and blkid are consistent, so it's
not a hal problem.

Do you see all partitions in the Computer place?

What is the output of

[Bug 96676] Re: [feisty] function keys don't work in gnome-terminal

2007-06-21 Thread Izzy
Instead of fighting for who's fault it is: Is it somehow likely that this will
be fixed in the near future? I guess the "standard user" is not interested in
the fact whether the bug is because of ncurses, xterm or whatever. To me it is
completely irrelevant whether xterm follows the rules described by terminfo, or
terminfo describes the behavior of xterm - as long as the information matches
correctly (which is obviously not the case at the moment). And I think we all
agree that the current behavior is not what it should be. The version of mc is
still 4.6.1 as it already has been on Dapper, so changes here are unlikely
(and, as I pointed out in my last post, see #12 above) it works fine when
accessed remotely via ssh from a different system (in my case, RHEL4 or CentOS
4.5 to be more precise). And it is very unlikely that a bunch of apps broke the
same thing in the same manner (vim and irsii mentioned here explicitely). So it
must be some underlying thing.
>From the sources I found on that issue at least to me it looks quite clear,
>that only F1..F4 are affected (and in mc, for me these seem the only broken
>keys as far as I can tell by now). Since xterm and gnome-terminal (and
>possibly some other terms and apps as well) seem affected, it may be some
>underlying library or the like. Is it possible to locate the change - and how
>could we possibly help locating?

[Bug 121540] Vietnam: Saigon is deprecated, should use capital Hanoi

2007-06-21 Thread Martin Pitt
Hello Arthur and tzdata team,

we just got this tzdata bug in Ubuntu:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tzdata/+bug/121540

which points out that "Saigon" has been renamed to "Ho Chi Minh" a
long time ago. The comment in the asia file already mentions that:

  # Saigon's official name is Thanh-Pho Ho Chi Minh, but it's too long.
  # We'll stick with the traditional name for now.

A nice solution to avoid obsolete names, retain a short name, and even
get more consistent is to use "Hanoi", which is the actual capital of
Vietnam (and is the very same TZ). Then Saigon could just be an
alias (i. e. transitional symlink) to Hanoi.

What do you think about that?

Thank you in advance,

Martin

[Bug 121683] Font DPI in Gnome wrong in Gutsy on MacBook

2007-06-21 Thread Tim Hull
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu Gutsy on my MacBook, the default font size/DPI for Gnome is
wrong.

In the case of running on the MacBook hardware natively, this means
extremely large fonts - with Gnome defaulting to 112 dpi.

In the case of running on VMware Fusion with the same resolution, this
means extremely small fonts - with Gnome defaulting to 75 dpi.

On Feisty, both configurations default to 96 dpi and have reasonably-sized
fonts. Changing to 96 dpi in Gnome (Font control panel) in Gutsy makes the
fonts better, though they are still a bit larger than they are in Feisty with
the same setting. This is wrong on two counts - 1) the fonts should be set
reasonably after install as in Feisty
2) The actual DPI of the screen is 113 dpi - at that setting the fonts would be
HUGE

Filed bug against GNOME as fonts outside of GNOME/GNOME apps are fine
and the issue hinges on GNOME's DPI setting...

I switched to the wired network and found that after a certain amount
of data is transferred (I would guess about 512MB) the network just
dies. The only thing I've been able to do to fix it so far is reboot.
I can reproduce it by copying a large amount of data. If I run 'ping
google.ca' at the same time as the transfer it eventually dies with:

ping:sendmsg: No buffer space available

fabbione has suggested trying and older kernel and seeing if the
problem continues. Will do and report back.

[Bug 36801] Re: Rosegarden does not start successfully by default in Dapper.

2007-06-21 Thread Derick Eisenhardt
To Mr. McIntyre (and anyone else):

This bug relates to the PACKAGE for Rosegarden in Ubuntu, not
necessarily the app itself. You may not be used to it in other distros,
but in Ubuntu, things are supposed to automagically JustWork after they
are installed ;)

JACK and anything else Rosegarden may need should be automatically
installed and configured as a dependency when someone installs the
package for Rosegarden. Don't take it personal...

PS: I too find it odd how the Linux community in general seems to
pretend that MIDI isn't around anymore...

[Bug 119643] Re: update exaile to include the amazon patch

2007-06-21 Thread Derick Eisenhardt
I was just about to report the same bug. The album art never shows up,
and Exaile always reports it found nothing on Amazon, regardless of the
album or artist. This was a problem in Fiesty, and it still is in Gutsy
(I'm currently running version 0.2.9+debian-4ubuntu1).

[Bug 121678] [gutsy] no window borders when compiz is enabled

2007-06-21 Thread Derick Eisenhardt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

When I enable "desktop effects" (Compiz 1:0.5.1+git20070621-0ubuntu1)
all my window borders disappear. This makes it impossible for me to use
my desktop with Compiz enabled. I'm running Gutsy now, but I had the
exact same problems with Fiesty too.

Also, this may be an unrelated, seperate bug, but when I open Gnome-
Terminal all I get is a blank white box.

I'm running Ubuntu (32bit, generic kernel 2.6.22-6, gnome), with an
NVidia GeForce 5200 FX (AGP, 128MB RAM), a 2.4Ghz single-core Pentium4C
(hyper-threading disabled), Intel chipset mobo, 1GB of DDR1 RAM. I'm
using the proprietary NVidia driver (nvidia-glx 1:1.0.9631+2.6.22.1-6.8,
nvidia-kernel-common 20051028+1ubuntu7).

Just let me know if there's anything else I can do to help you track
down this bug ;)

[Bug 121676] add DKMS to Ubuntu

2007-06-21 Thread Matt Domsch
Public bug reported:

Please include DKMS in Ubuntu main. Version 2.0.17 or higher has Ubuntu
support, and will be used to enable brand new hardware on forthcoming
Dell systems for which the base kernel of each given Ubuntu release does
not have drivers for that new hardware.

GIT: http://linux.dell.com/git/dkms.git
Deb: http://linux.dell.com/dkms/debian/
Home page: http://linux.dell.com/dkms/dkms.html

DKMS stands for Dynamic Kernel Module Support. It is designed to create a
framework where kernel dependent module source can reside so that it is very
easy to rebuild modules as you upgrade kernels. This will allow Linux vendors
to provide driver drops without having to wait for new kernel releases while
also taking out the guesswork for customers attempting to recompile modules for
new kernels.

For veteran Linux users it also provides some advantages since a separate
framework for driver drops will remove kernel releases as a blocking mechanism
for distributing code. Instead, driver development should speed up as this
separate module source tree will allow quicker testing cycles meaning better
tested code can later be pushed back into the kernel at a more rapid pace. Its
also nice for developers and maintainers as DKMS only requires a source tarball
in conjunction with a small configuration file in order to function correctly.

[Bug 39626] Re: Candidates lookup table should be vertical by default in case of Japanese

2007-06-21 Thread Takuro Ashie
Hi.

I'm sorry for late response.

>So all Japanese input method would prefer a vertical candidate table?

All Janapanese input methods on MS-Windows uses vertical lookup table.

In Fedora's package, some default hotkeys are switched automatically according
to current locale.

http://cvs.fedora.redhat.com/viewcvs/devel/scim/?root=core
http://cvs.fedora.redhat.com/viewcvs/devel/scim/scim-system-config?root=core&rev=1.2&view=auto
http://cvs.fedora.redhat.com/viewcvs/devel/scim/initial-locale-hotkey-186861.patch?root=core&rev=1.5&view=auto

Although this patch isn't good solution, we also need similar mechanism
for direction of lookup table.

Anyway, these problem should be fixed at upstream (including the hotkey issue).
I'll report it to upstream's ML.
Let's continue our discussion at there.

[Bug 121674] No sound in vista after booting into Edgy

2007-06-21 Thread sn123
Public bug reported:

If I boot into Edgy first and then boot back into Vista, I get
absolutely no sound in Vista, the only way to restore the sound services
in Vista is by restarting the system. This didn't happen with Dapper +
XP combination that I earlier had on my system; and since, I upgraded
both XP and Dapper at the same time, I can't really say whether dapper
would have worked with Vista or not.

Here are the steps to repro:
1) On a dual boot system; log onto Edgy first.
2) Open some sound file and notice that it plays just fine.
3) Restart the system, log onto Vista.
4) Play a sound file: look ma, no sound!
5) Restart the system, log onto Vista again and the sound is restored.

System Details:
1) Dell Inspiron 600m with SigmaTel Vista Sound Card Driver.
2) Dual Boot with Vista Business (Grub installed on EX3 partition) and Ubunty

[Bug 121672] [gutsy] udev infinitely has errors, keeps CPU at 99%

2007-06-21 Thread Derick Eisenhardt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: udev

Upon recently upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy, my udev seems to have gone
crazy. About halfway through the boot-up process, the splash screen
disappears and I see constant, repeating error messages from udevd.

They're usually to the extent of:
udevd-event[some number]: node_symlink: unlink(/dev/mapper/) failed: Is a
directory
udevd-event[some number]: node_symlink: symlink(...,/dev/mapper/) failed:
Device lookup failed

After about a minute, X and GDM startup, but are really slow. Upon
entering my desktop (Gnome if it helps), gkrellm constantly reports my
CPU use at 99%.

If I press alt+ctrl+F1, I see messages about:
[number] device-mapper: table: 254:1: linear: dm-linear: Device lookup failed

If I manually kill the udevd process, my CPU use goes down to almost 0%,
like it should be...

My system is running 32bit Ubuntu (Linux-generic 2.6.22-6), I have a
Pentium 4C 2.4Ghz processor (hyper-threading disabled, although I've
tried it both ways), with a Gig of RAM, SATA hard drives, and an intel
chipset based mother board.

Please let me know anything I can do to help you guys track down this
bug! :)

2007-06-21 Thread Marsal71
I find the same problem: the CDs are recognized perfectly, but the DVD are not
read or mounted (burned by me or not).
I use Samsung Writemaster CD/DVDW-SH-W162DTS00.
This work properly in Windows 2000 or 2003 with the apropriated firmware.

[Bug 121540] Re: "Where are you?" SAIGON should be named "Ho Chi Minh City"

2007-06-21 Thread capiscuas
It's true than maybe Than-Pho Ho Chi Minh can be a little bit long, in
vietnamese Than-Pho means City. Usually even in official papers they use to
reduce to TP Ho Chi Minh. Or even to TP HCM, In english we reduce to HCMC. I
recommend the option TP Ho Chi Minh. Also don't forget about including the
capital. Hanoi.
Thks.

[Bug 107805] Re: Thinkpad T60p ati 5250 video card not "completly" detected; result is powerstate not lowered when on battery power

2007-06-21 Thread ctirpak
James - would you be so kind as to attach your xorg.conf to this? I have
a T60p with the same card and it refuses to start gdm at all. I fiddled
with this about a month ago and made some progress but lost my notes and
am now stuck. If needed you can send me the file at ctirpak over at
gmail.

For Peter or whoever takes this bug over, the device 71d4 is what
identifies this card. It seems to be a variant of the V5200 that is
specific to Lenovo T60p (perhaps even widescreens only) and when I asked
ATI for more info I was rebuffed with "call the manufacturer of the
laptop".

[Bug 107115] Re: log out or switch user results in crash

2007-06-21 Thread drama
just a small update here. i did have it solved using the
AlwaysRestartServer=true as stated earlier. however it didnt last long.
but on the brighter site. the solution bryce posted works flawlessly. i
used that solution myself. tried every thing i could think of to get x
to crash (just as a test). had 5 videos going in each of 3 user
accounts. as well as a pps2 gamme demmo running through an emulator
inside of wine on each one.. continuosly switched between each account
ever few minutes for about an hour. nothing would crash it. although
this is a great solution it does take some work if your running fiesty
like i am. you need to edit your sources list and change each "fiesty"
entry to "gutsy". download the files bryce mentioned in his post from
the link. then update the kernel before applying the updates mentioned
(at least this is how i have done it). you of course can redit your
sorce list back to fiesty after all this is done. another plus to all
this is that the updated kernel seems much improved. at least on my pc
boot up is at least 10 secs shorter. login about 2-3 secs shorter. as
well as increased responsiveness.

Sorry, it looks like pinning udev also causes

[Bug 37784] Re: sky2 ethernet driver is freezing on big upload

2007-06-21 Thread kozimodo
I've used every shipped driver since Dapper (now on feisty) -- the
network now only hangs very rarely whereas with dapper it was a frequent
occurence. Now when it goes out, it seems to be when I'm downloading
something sizable. I'll go away and when I come back, the network has
hung. I suppose it is possible that it is not the driver's fault as an
"rmmod sky2" and "modprobe sky2" does not bring the network back online.
I did install the sk98lin driver yesterday -- I'll post an update if I
get another hang.

[Bug 121228] Re: Segfault retrieving passphrase for WiFi network

2007-06-21 Thread Stephen Cradock
You are probably right that there is something going wrong in keyring,
Sergey.

But there is also a MAJOR change in the way nm-applet works, at least
for me. As far as I can see, nm 0.6.4 never set up a keyring, either in
Feisty or in Gutsy. The 0.6.5 version seems to do it whether I want it
to or not. Why is this? Isn't a keyring supposed to be an optional
additional convenience - in this case, so we don't have to keep
searching for the bit of paper with the WEP or WAP passkey written on
it? I would prefer to be asked if I want this new behavior, preferably
AFTER the network connection has been established correctly without any
hassle.

This is a significant blemish in the "It Just Works" for me - whether or
not there are flaws in keyring.

It was an ext3 filesystem, and I'm pretty sure there was plenty of
space when making the image file. The resulting file was so close
to 4GiB that I doubt it was a coincidence. When copying files
from DVD to hard disk, there were multiple _read_ errors, one
for each file that couldn't be copied.

In addition to that, I've had trouble, in the past, with playing DVDs
using Kaffeine under Kubuntu, though the particular DVDs I have at
the moment seem to play okay. The DVDs played fine under Windoze.

I've been having some difficulty replicating the problem now that
I'm running Edgy and a 2.6.21.1 kernel. I'll drop back to an earlier
(standard) kernel and let you know what happens ...

The 2.6.21.1 kernel seems to use /dev/scd0 and /media/dvdrecorder
now rather than having /dev/hda and /media/cdrom0 in /etc/fstab.

Dropping back to 2.6.17-11-generic reverts to using /dev/hda, but
doesn't allow me to replicate the problem. :-(

Maybe it went away with the change to Edgy.

Hmm... Since Dapper was a LTS release, you'll probably be interested
in nailing this one, assuming it's real. I could try to reinstall Dapper.
I do have space on the hard drive - a 2GiB partition down low and a
5GiB partition up high, but I'm not sure how to persuade Grub to let
me boot to Edgy, Windoze or the newly (to be) installed Dapper.
The manual page for grub is unhelpful and the (depleted) Texinfo
documentation is no better.

I'm sure I could install Dapper to use /dev/sda2 as /boot and /dev/sda7
as /, but I'm not sure I could then revert to booting Edgy and Windoze.

Any suggestions?

Maybe you could point me towards the rest of the Texinfo docs for Grub.

Regards, Graeme.

[Bug 84591] Re: feisty 20070210/herd5 persistent mode doesn't work

2007-06-21 Thread Mike
Some interesting new information (at least interesting to me).

Ignoring the unionfs issue for the moment, I played around with the
pinned files. I found out that persistence works if I only pin the
following 4 files:

Package: udev
Pin: version 093-0ubuntu18.0edgy2
Pin-Priority: 1001

Package: upstart
Pin: version 0.2.7-7
Pin-Priority: 1001

Package: upstart-compat-sysv
Pin: version 0.2.7-7
Pin-Priority: 1001

Package: upstart-logd
Pin: version 0.2.7-7
Pin-Priority: 1001

The other thing that I did was upgrade to the 1.91 version of casper
from gutsy because I suspected that the other debian changes had been
rolled into the gutsy version of casper.

Sure enough, persistence works fine. It seemed that gutsy's casper file
was fine as it has been revised.

The other thing that I had done, before upgrading to the gutsy version
of casper, was to unpin the three upstart files. Again, with this last
change, persistence still worked, but I received a failure to umount
local filesystems. So, persistence worked with the only pinned file was
udev.

I have suspected this from the beginning, but this really re-enforces my
belief that there has to be some issue in udev that is causing this
problem. Alternatively, it could be an interaction between udev and the
upstart files. But, based upon these results, it seems there has to be a
problem in one of these.

I am going to play around a little more to see if I can generate any
additional useful information.

I doubt it. And I had been wondering about that. :)

Seems to me, though, if terminfo has 'em in there _specifically_ for
usages like xterm's, they're without excuse for not saying something
about how they tend to be used. :p

2007-06-21 Thread Alex Mauer
Ah, I see your point about the other special keys (cursor in particular)

there's cuu1, cuf1, cud1, and cub1...but shifted variants only for left
and right (kLFT and kRIT); and no control variants whatsoever. And this
all without getting into alt/meta/super variants... ;-)

Did any terminal ever actually have 64 function keys, as the existence
of kf0-kf63 suggests?

2007-06-21 Thread Charles Ulrich
Okay, so it's been awhile since I've posted this and I still have
neither found an answer nor received any suggestions or questions.

If any devs are listening, know that I've been battling X in some form
for over 11 years now and know my way around it fairly well. I'm more
than willing to provide more information, test patches, and in general
try some rudimentary debugging. I just need *some* guidance since I'm
not a software developer myself, just a lowly admin. I love Ubuntu, but
this is quite a showstopper. I just can't believe that I'm the first
person to run into this as it's not a rare laptop by any measure.

[Bug 121228] Re: Segfault retrieving passphrase for WiFi network

2007-06-21 Thread Sergey
I also thought originally that this is a network-manager issue, but it's
actually gnome-keyring who's at fault here. gnome-keyring and libgnome-
keyring0 were recently upgraded in gutsy to 2.19.4.1 from 0.8.1. The
latest network-manager from gutsy works great with the old version, but
breaks down completely for me with the new one. Even when I applied a
workaround mentioned here, wireless connections only lasted a few
seconds before breaking up, and network-manager was segfaulting
constantly.

So, I went to packages.ubuntu.org, downloaded libgnome-keyring0 and
gnome-keyring for feisty, and downgraded them. Everything is back to
normal now.

Some of the symptoms of network-manager 0.6.5's differences in
communication between keyring 0.8.1 and 2.19.4.1. When I login, I'm
normally prompted for my keyring password only. With the latest gutsy
version 2.19.4.1, I was instead prompted to "Deny, Allow once, Allow
always" for nm-applet. network-manager would then crash. It only
"worked" when I had keyring-manager application open at the same time,
and even then it would try to connect unsuccessfully for a long time or
connect and then crash or disconnect immediately. I'm using WPA2 PSK
(AES) with Atheros non-GPL driver (madwifi).

working. i waited for about 10 minutes, but this action never finished.

so, i guess i will have to launch rhythmbox from gdb and just hope that

[Bug 121661] resume failure: script local-premount/resume does not see resume device and fails

2007-06-21 Thread mTim
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: initramfs-tools

Resume fails due to a delay in the initialization of the device. This
bug was exacerbated by the already reported problems with resume failure
changing UUID of swap devices and the fact that update-initramfs only
updates the latest kernel (not the one I was testing). This is similar
to bug 83025 I think but not sure. Quick fix is to remove the test if
the device exists if [ -e ${resume}] before running /bin/resume. I got
fed up with UUID and used my swap device directly. With a test shell
the device shows up after a few seconds after the shell is started.

Running Feisty upgraded from Dapper. Problem fix/work on Feisty and
latest udev/initramfs-tools packages

fix works with apt-get source --build for

[Bug 121660] "sh: Can't open ScanWithKlamAV" error in konqueror

2007-06-21 Thread Robert Persson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: konqueror

When I try to scan a folder using the "scan with KlamAV" option of the
contextual menu, KlamAV doesn't launch. At the console I get a "sh:

KlamAV appears to be present and the permissions look OK to me:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/bin$ ls -l /usr/bin/ScanWithKlamAV
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 403 2007-02-24 05:57 /usr/bin/ScanWithKlamAV

day I just booted to ubuntu and there was only one workspace and I could
not do the cube effect to move the window. I had some advice from the

[Bug 101857] Re: WPA doesn't work with NetworkManager using the bcm43xx driver (works with wpa_supplicant)

2007-06-21 Thread Shane O'Brien
Somebody on the Gnome Bugzilla with the same problem posted this:

"Similar problem here, also on an ibook g4 with the bcm43xx driver
(debian sid).

 - using wpa_supplicant : it works fine.
 - NetworkManager + entering the "ascii plaintext" password in the dialogue box
: doesn't works.
 - NetworkManager + entering the "hexadecimal string" (generated using the same
password and wpa_passphrase) : it works.

It seems to be a endianess problem, because it works fine with the same
settings (same WPA network+password, debian sid) on a x86 laptop".

I'm not able to test this at this time, but everything else would seem
to point to it being an endianness issue. After all, the only reason I
(and others) thought the bug was specific to bcm43xx was because that's
the card that the iBook uses... but it could just be an endianness issue
affecting PowerPC only.

Besides that most obvious symptom of feedback when pcm is above 60%,
sometimes there is a rythmic heavy clicking sound instead of the
clicking, and almost always the sound quality is tinny and horrible, as
well as being at an annoyingly low feasible volume.

[Bug 96676] Re: [feisty] function keys don't work in gnome-terminal

2007-06-21 Thread Micah Cowan
Okay, thanks Alex, that clarifies things quite a lot. I guess Xterm and
its sisters have repurposed the kfX strings. It might help for
terminfo(5) to clarify this situation (even though it really isn't
ncurses' responsibility to do so, since that's not the original meaning
of those names; still, it does briefly address XTerm/DEC mouse
handling).

What I've said up until now actually does apply to the other special
keys (such as cursor keys), though, but that's irrelevant to this bug.
