That's not xterm's default install but gutsy's… The problem is not the System category (btw Accessories would be better) but the default appearance in the menu.. Ubuntu-desktop is dependent on xterm because of gdm's recovery console I think. But there can be users who like xterm and would like to have it in the menu. This is going to sound harsh but if your bug isn't exactly libwfb related (or you don't know why the binary driver fails to work with your card) can you avoid posting in this particular bug and instead file a new bug (or better yet post a message on https://answers.launchpad.net/ )? It's not fair to double the size of this bug with support requests (additionally, if it is too painful to use Linux and you have an alternative you are happy with then don't use it! Jose: Make sure you reboot after installing new kernel modules. However, your problem sounds exactly like the libwfb problem in Bug #98641 (which I mentioned in an earlier comment). Be careful, don't install the .deb over the top of a system using manually installed drivers - this is the path to ruin! Uninstall any manual drivers first. Roberto, On my Dell D600, I could also use the Fn Keys to increase and decrease the brightness, and the brightness applet was not working before too. After I have performed the instructions, when I use those keys, it is behaving as before (from an end user point of view). I mean, if I press once on decrease, it decrease them once. Also, the modification are easily undone. I have just discovered that there are two problems here. One is that compose key combinations are not what they were. For instance I used to use [ gu ] for a g-breve (as per http://docsun.cites.uiuc.edu/sun_docs/C/solaris_9/SUNWdev/I18NDG/p25.html etc.), but now it is [ Ug ]. The other problem is that some compose key combinations work in some applications but not others. For instance [ ss ] for ß works in all the applications I have tried it in, whereas [ Ug ] for ğ works in Konqueror, Kate, Konsole, LyX, OpenOffice (i.e. openoffice.org-kde; openoffice.org-gnome might possibly behave differently) and Opera, but not in Gedit Firefox, or Gxine. I think this is a gnome/gtk thing (which would also explain why it doesn't work in Abiword or SeaMonkey) because I read somewhere that gnome overrides some of the compose key functionality for some reason. I also read that if you append export GTK_IM_MODULE = xim to your /etc/environment, this will disable the gnome override. However this doesn't work for me. This patch is much more intrusive as it needs to be. Please just apply the patch inline in the feisty version and do not switch to cdbs for a SRU. cdbs changes the build process drastically.
