[Bug 43961] Re: Power down after shutdown does not work...

2007-08-02 Thread Mike Grunde
I had this same problem with Edgy and Feisty. Ever since upgrading to
Gutsy, I have had no problems at all, except for Bug #129581, but that
has nothing to do with power down. Gutsy solved my power down problem!

[Bug 119344] Re: Restricted drivers manager does not load fglrx module

2007-08-02 Thread Zenigata
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 115188 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/115188

Sort of the same problem, X starts but not loading fglrx. Looking at the
xrg logs, I can see that it enables aiglx, wich seems to me being a
nonsense with ATI's drivers.

Ever since I updated to Gutsy, I've been unable to use ATI's drivers,
wether it was with the restricted-manager, the repositories or ATI's
installer.

It fails to open a DRI device (according to the logs)

Im not sure it is related to SMP, at least not on my computer. Because
running "while true; do (dmesg &); done >outfile" does not result in
freeze. But running "cat outfile" (same file) results in freeze. I have
also trie maxcpus=1 as kernel options, but this does not solve the

[Bug 130094] Tribes3 dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg does not add EndSubSection after color depth

2007-08-02 Thread Cody Peterson
Public bug reported:

If running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, and one reconfigures and
writes a new xorg.conf file, a "no screens found" error will occur. It

[Bug 130086] Re: Graphical installers don't include application previews

2007-08-02 Thread Paul van Genderen
Thanks for your report. Your idea might get more attention and have the
possibility of being implemented if you would submit a specification for
this. I suggest being a bit more specific on how you would implement
this feature. For example, do you want to integrate all the screenshots
in app-install-data, as a separate package or do you want to have them
downloaded separately when needed? How do you make the files available
to adept or gnome-app-install, via the .desktop files or through a kind
of filename scheme?

You should first check whether it already exists at the Ubuntu specs
page ( https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+specs ) in Launchpad. If
that is the case, please feel free to contact the drafter of that spec
about your comments/suggestions. Otherwise you can start writing a spec
following the steps described here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FeatureSpecifications .

Good luck with the InstallFests!

[Bug 44989] Re: Doesn't print (large) PDF files

2007-08-02 Thread thesoothsayer
I think it's a problem when the pdf files are converted to postscript
before printing. I downloaded Acrobat Reader 7 for linux and it prints
fine.

Trying to convert the file to ps format (pdf2ps) gives an erroneous
output file that keeps growing before I canceled it. I'm still able to
open the output but it displays wrongly. Opening the file in kpdf or
kghostview looks exactly the same as the pdf2ps output. In evince it
looks correct but cannot print, as mentioned before.

My guess is probably open office impress sometimes create erroneous pdf
files which cannot be handled properly for printing (cannot be converted
to ps format correctly) by some applications.

[Bug 130087] pt_BR translation broke Python syntax highlighting

2007-08-02 Thread LKRaider
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

Using the pt_BR gedit, the Python syntax highlighting is broken for non-
multiline strings (as in -> "String" will not be highlighted).

The problem is the translation of the following terms are equal:
Multiline Double Quoted String == Double Quoted String == Texto entre aspas
duplas
Multiline Single Quoted String == Single Quoted String == Texto entre aspas
simples

Changing the file python.lang so that these terms are not translated
fixes the issue.

uname -r - command to get kernel version, so that would be

Solution I said will work, but it will only fix installation of

[Bug 130086] Graphical installers don't include application previews

2007-08-02 Thread gringer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: adept

While going through the install process for applications at a recent
InstallFest, the user was somewhat surprised that screenshots or icons
were not included in the package summary view. It would be nice if there
were some kind of preview for applications (falling back to and/or
including the application icon), so that users would be able to get a
visual idea of what the application was used for. For console
applications -- or if a screenshot does not seem suitable and an icon is
not available -- a placeholder may be
appropriate.

I was referred to download.com as an example of this, which uses 160x120
jpeg images (although png would be preferable) for applications. Just as
a starting point, here's one such application with a screenshot:

http://www.download.com/Ghost-Installer-Free-
Edition/3000-2216_4-10306270.html

I've done a mock-up of what this might look like in adept, by adding an
image of the application, umbrello, into the bottom right corner of a
screenshot found at www.kubuntu.org:

http://user.interface.org.nz/~gringer/pics/adept-screenshot_preview.png

This is not a bug specifically for adept (it would be applicable to all
graphical installers), but adept was the package that was being used at
the time it was noticed.

[Bug 122468] Re: DISK BOOT FAILURE after 7.04 upgrade

2007-08-02 Thread granec
I´m experimenting the same problem: DISK BOOT FAILURE after instaling
Ubuntu 7.04 on a hard drive with a previous Windows 2000 on C partition.
I keep my mothreboard´s BIOS up to date (A Gigabyte 865G in case it
means something). While I´m researching to find a solution, I´m leaving
a bootable CD into my CD-ROM drive as a way of getting the -so much
desired- original result and it works so far.

[Bug 128384] Re: Instant messaging documentation doesn't cover useful topics

2007-08-02 Thread Yannick Defais
Hi,

Thank you Dawid. If someone is willing to use this documentation
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ekiga), there is no problem as it is
under cc-by-sa. You might also consider dropping some part of it in the
process:

Title 4: Register to a commercial VoIP provider (landline and mobile phones)
is subject to change and refer to businesses. Except maybe the "default
provider" included in Ekiga. It will probably need an explanation on howto dial
phone numbers like the one i just added to this wiki.

Title 6: Install the latest version
contradict the Ubuntu policy (package quality support) and Gutsy will have the
last version (or very close to).

Title 8: Edgy 6.10 Troubleshooting
exclusively mention Ubuntu 6.10. Thus doesn't seems necessary for Gutsy.

This left titles 1, 2, 3, 4 (partially), 5, 7 and 9. Possibly.

Regards,
Yannick

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper

caps lock/scroll lock flash on/off continually, locks up during regular

I have tried to install the rt73 module from

not load. Allot of people use the rt73 ralink driver for belkins usb

[Bug 129260] Re: corruption when using md raid1 on amd64 smp

2007-08-02 Thread Joseph Fisk
** Summary changed:

- opteron amd64 data corruption
+ corruption when using md raid1 on amd64 smp

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.15-28-amd64-server

md5sum returns inconsistent results when run repeatedly on a large text
- file stored on a linux software (md) raid1 volume.
+ file stored on a linux software (md) raid1 volume (ext3). md5sum works
+ fine when using a single standalone disk (also ext3).

This is not the iommu issue experienced by other amd64 users:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
  source-2.6.15/+bug/128568

However, this system did experience the iommu issue and is currently
running with iommu=soft as a workaround.

This is happening on a dual dual-core opteron system with 8GB
registered/ecc memory running up-to-date LTS. The system ran memtest86
for over 75 passes with no errors.

I started a thread about this problem at

[Bug 130075] Random pauses when transferring data at gigabit speeds with forcedeth driver

2007-08-02 Thread Christian Iversen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

More or less randomly, I'm seeing this in the kernel log:

...
[11994.316856] eth0: too many iterations (6) in nv_nic_irq.
[12020.522236] eth0: too many iterations (6) in nv_nic_irq.
[12179.254035] eth0: too many iterations (6) in nv_nic_irq.
[12180.435612] eth0: too many iterations (6) in nv_nic_irq.
[12194.004482] eth0: too many iterations (6) in nv_nic_irq.
[12310.463206] eth0: too many iterations (6) in nv_nic_irq.
[12310.475195] eth0: too many iterations (6) in nv_nic_irq.
[12431.413466] eth0: too many iterations (6) in nv_nic_irq.
...

I'm transferring (nfs+rsync) some large files (16GB data total) between
a client and server both running forcedeth.

I am in fact seeing this error on BOTH machines, and they are definitely
linked to the pauses. That would make sense if it's some kind of IRQ
issue. requiring a restart of the card.

The two machines are both amd64 dual-core, but they are otherwise
different. Completely different motherboards, extension cards, etc.

I can't say that I understand the message completely (what exactly is
iterated over?), but it could simply be that the forcedeth drivers have
too small a timeout, buffer, or somesuch other quantity. These timeouts
only seem to be happening at gigabit speeds, which tops out at about
50-60MB/s on my systems.

[Bug 130074] Adding new tabs to tilda causes it to increase in size

2007-08-02 Thread saads
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tilda

Running gutsy and tilda_0.09.4-0ubuntu3, if you run tilda and then
right-click and say "New Tab", the window that tilda is running in will
increase in size. If you create another new tab, it will increase in
size again and will continue to do so even while running off the screen.
This makes the right most tabs inaccessible and the text will overflow
off the screen so that it cannot be read. Closing tabs does not reduce
the size and the only solution at this point to shrink it is to close

[Bug 99267] Re: USB does not have power after wake-up

2007-08-02 Thread Ray Rees
Update: Tried Kubuntu Gutsy Tribe 3 on my Thinkpad T30 w/ Cisco 350 Aironet
PCMCIA.
First, the good news: both suspend & hibernate worked! Had USB power & PCMCIA
wireless!
Now for the very bad news: had the same unreliable pcmcia wireless behavior as
Fedora Core 7, where the connection drops and sometimes the Cisco 350 Aironet
appears dead.

Common factor between Gutsy & FC7 Moonshine: kernel 2.6.22.

Major bummer!

Hope Gutsy is fixed before October release.

How do I report this for Gutsy?

[Bug 127373] Re: WPA2 connection fails if nm-applet retrieves password from keyring

2007-08-02 Thread Paul Dufresne
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at [WWW]
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this
bug as a bug in network-manager.

I see no question to ask, so I marked it as confirmed.

[Bug 71671] Re: /etc/papersize contains "a4" rather than "letter" in Edgy

2007-08-02 Thread Douglas Moyes
This is only half of the problem, You also have other files to set (as I
stated in #46613)

Here is what you do to fix. As root do the following:
(yes, this has to be done in a root shell not with sudo. If sudo su - doesn't
give you a root shell, do sudo /bin/bash --login, better yet, give the root
account a password and log in as root)

apt-get install libpaper-utils #some programs use this library to get the paper
size
papersize -p letter #this sets /etc/papersize to letter, you could also set
this manually.
echo "letter" >/etc/psPaperSize #some other applications use this

Other applications instead allow you to select the default papersize, or
use the printer settings, others use these two files. The files in /etc
set the preferred paper size. If these aren't set some printers, like my
HP Color LaserJet 2605n, will complain about the incorrect paper size
being in the print tray, and will refuse to print until you insert in A4
paper size, or override the settings.

[Bug 46613] Re: Always prints A4 paper

2007-08-02 Thread Douglas Moyes
I am using 7.04, this is also an issue with previous versions of Ubuntu
through 6.06.

I have confirmed this to be a problem too when printing PDF files from
other applications (xpdf, lpr, ggv). The problem is that the Ubuntu
install/configuration process does not give an option to select the
preferred paper size and does not install some utilities by default.
While this is fine for those on the other side of the planet, this
causes problems for those who have more expensive HP printers that won't
print until the correct paper size has been selected in the tray.
Notably, my HP Color LaserJet 2605n... It flashes "Please insert A4 in
Tray 1" even though the PDF file is formatted for Letter and not A4.

All Fixed. Now you guys get to make a pretty GUI to do this in the
printer setup dialoge box :-P

Another cavet I have is the default language for Firefox is set to en-
gb, and there is no language options for en-us and en-ca, both of which
use different spellings for words like color/colour, program/programme,
center/centre, and so forth. But that's for another bug report...

but, then, module-assistant still gives me an error about there not being a

what's going on? is this a problem with module-assistant? or should i

[Bug 103911] Re: Feisty: can't use dist-upgrader

2007-08-02 Thread Juan Pablo Salazar Bertín
@Sebastian Heinlein:

You can see the dbus message after starting update-manager without sudo.
Your press the "check" button, the message is shown in terminal and then
you're asked for your password.

I've tested this against package version 1:0.67.

Here's my terminal output after pressing the "check" button and entering
my password:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ update-manager
could not send the dbus Inhibit signal:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Process
/usr/bin/gnome-power-manager exited with status 0
