[Bug 135460] Booting with USB drive crashes RAID array

2007-08-28 Thread Waster
Public bug reported:

In latest Gutsy, booting with a USB drive plugged in causes my md RAID10
to fall apart. On the last occassion, I got a complete hang, too, but
this is not the main focus of this bug report. Rebooting without the
device plugged in worked, but the array had to resync. This is almost
certainly due to a drive renaming problem. It seems that for similar
reasons I cannot boot from a USB drive.

[Bug 135458] X server on Parallels 3.0 crashes upon restart after "extra desktop effects" is enabled

2007-08-28 Thread Michiel Sikma
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop

Yesterday, I had installed Gutsy in a virtual computer under Parallels
3.0 for Mac OS X (this is a standard x86 virtualizer, and quite
popular). Just to see what it looked like, I enabled "extra desktop
effects" as I was setting it up. Nothing seemed to have changed when I
did that, but it didn't seem to complain in any way. I updated the
system, installed Java, and then shut it down. Today, I'm restarting the
machine, to find that the X server is constantly crashing while it's
trying to start. I get the following error message in the typical
blue/grey screen of X death:

"The display server has been shut down about 6 times in the last 90
seconds. It is likely that something bad is going on. Waiting for 2
minutes before trying again on display :0."

Followed by an OK button. After pressing OK, it just waits 2 minutes and
then again tries--and fails--to start the X server. I haven't figured
out a workaround yet because I have no idea where the "desktop effects"
config files are stored. I couldn't find anything in xorg's config file,
anyway.

Again, the environment is Parallels 3.0, a virtualization software (this
particular one was running without "DirectX support", with the guest
computer having 512 MB RAM and 16 MB video memory) on Mac OS X, running
on an Intel iMac 20" inch, of which the specs are largely the same as at
, except the video card, which is
an ATi Radeon X1600.

[Bug 135016] Re: Evolution prevents nfs server from working when synchronising folders

2007-08-28 Thread RichardKinder
I beg to differ - this is a bug (albeit a bit of a touchy-feely bug with
little hard data). Probably kernel related more than anything (lots of
small files being opened/closed, causing excessive interrupt load/busy
waiting). Possibly even the SATA disk/drivers doing bad things (haven't
looked at the guts of that part of the kernel).

Further information:

If the evolution process is killed off halfway through the
synchronisation, the nfs server recovers and allows connections again.
This suggests resource starvation. What's particularly bad in this case
is a userspace application is starving the nfs kernel server. Not your
typical situation, but somewhat scary if multi-user systems are
considered.

Of course if it's related to bad hardware then there's nothing anyone
can really do. However, since I have no other indications that the
problem is hardware related (no kernel log messages screaming out at me,
no funny sounds from the HD) I think this is just an issue with
balancing the system. Reducing the load evolution puts on the system
would be the workaround/fix.

I'll leave this as invalid, but if I find any other cases where
evolution is resource starving my machine, I'll reopen.

I'll also test this out on the next release when it comes out.

Regards, Richard

2007-08-28 Thread Hilario J. Montoliu \(hjmf\)
Thank you Ulfgaard for submitting this report.

Please indicate which extensions/plugins do you have enabled; and if
this crash is reproducible describe it as in much detail as possible so
we can have a test case to reproduce.

Also check that the crash is still reproducible in '-safe-mode' (just
launch firefox with that arg from the command line) as that way the
extensions and themes you might have wont load in that session.

Finally as the retrace we've made isn't very informative, could you
please try to obtain a backtrace by following the instructions on [1],
and upload the results to [2].

This will greatly aid us in tracking down your problem.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 110158] Re: wpa_supplicant locked up consuming 100% resources

2007-08-28 Thread Albert Cardona
Happened again this week, twice. Tonight I've closed all apps -the
laptop was responding, only the NetworkManager was locked up, frozen in
a half-turn of it's green slashes. In a terminal 'top' would list
wpa_supplicant as using 100% resources. Then I've chosen System / quit -
shutdown, and went through the shutdown procedure.

The ubuntu logo showed up, the slider run a bit, then the splash
disappeared and printed:

Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Daemon avahi-daemon
Failed to kill daemon: timer expired
umount2: Device or resource busy
umount: /dev/sda8 busy - remounted read-only
mount: / is busy

After a while the words:

Will now halt

got appended, but the machine did NOT halt. I had to push the power
button for a few seconds for that.

I cannot "try out" gutsy because this is the laptop where I work. I am
willing though to try out a backport of Gutsy's wpa_supplicant. Also
next time it locks up I'll try to backtrace it.

[Bug 135326] Re: [FEISTY] firefox crashed [EMAIL PROTECTED]::ComputePadding] [EMAIL PROTECTED]::InitConstraints] [EMAIL PROTECTED]

2007-08-28 Thread Hilario J. Montoliu \(hjmf\)
Thank you Martin Schaaf for your report.

Is the crash reproducible? If so, can you describe a detailed test case
to reproduce.

Please also indicate which extensions/plugins do you have enabled. It
would be interesting that you try to reproduce the crash in '-safe-mode'
to disable all themes and extensions.

Thank you in advance.

2007-08-28 Thread Richard Johnson
I just tested my spam filters by doing it automatically and the spam filters
are not the issue. It looks like that after Kontact/KMail is up and running,
any new mail that comes in gets stripped of everything before it hits the spam
filters. Here is what the message looks like after it gets put into the trash.

Spam detection software, running on the system "ShakaDoobie", has
identified this incoming email as possible spam. The original message
has been attached to this so you can view it (if it isn't spam) or label
similar future email. If you have any questions, see

[Bug 135448] Workspace switcher is too close to Trash applet

[Bug 34199] Re: Evolution cannot connect to Exchange backend process

2007-08-28 Thread Greg Haywood
Same here, I am running Ubuntu 7.04 and Evolution 2.10.1

I have tried everything, deleting directory, the ld fix and even
starting fresh by deleting everything. It works for a while (random)
then "lost connection" errors start. They get worse and worse until I
delete the account.

This is causing evolution to be unusable for me (I use it all day at
work) and I have no other way to connect to an exchange server except
going back to windows (uurrgghh) After 7 years with linux that is *not*
a palatable option.

Please can someone, somewhere devote a little time to this? I cannot
keep encouraging users to switch while this major problem exists!.

Thanks all,

Greg

[Bug 135445] [Gutsy] Kontact sends mail to trash with "no subject" and "unkowns"

2007-08-28 Thread Richard Johnson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdepim

I have a lot of mail going into "trash" which has been marked as spam.
It then changes the subject to "no subject", and the sender and date to
"unknown". I noticed that this does not occur when starting up Kontact,
but only after Kontact has been up and running and does and automatic
check of email.

[Bug 134938] Re: nvidia-glx-config makes the x-server crash (Tribe 5)

2007-08-28 Thread John M
As I said before, I renamed it *when* I copied it to my home folder.

The problem with nv versus nvidia was the opposite: either restoring a
backup of xorg.conf that includes nv instead of nvidia, or just by
changing that word (nvidia) in the xorg.conf file, solves the problem
with the x-server. Which, I guess, means that the problem is in the
kernel module.

I just reinstalled Feisty, so... Thanks for the help anyway.

Re: [Bug 133875] Re: Evolution - Mail shuts down (closes) immediately after downloading email

2007-08-28 Thread Richard Koch
August 28, 2007

Dear Mr. Bacher,

Thanks for your prompt response. I tried several times to obtain a
backtrace of the problem, and evolution froze several times (an infinite
loop?), so I had to end the program without success. Then I tried a
valgrind, but was not sure where the valgrind file output was, so I did
not retrieve it.

This afternoon, I cleared my mailbox on the server by downloading my
messages to another computer, which I use as a backup, and which I do
approximately once a week. I downloaded approximately 20 mb (~200
messages), and the mail program on that computer removed all messages
from the server. The evolution mail program on this (my main) computer
now works perfectly, in that the program does not close after the
messages are downloaded. I can only think that for some reason
evolution interacted with the large quantity of messages (or amount of
storage used) on the server, and closed immediately after downloading.
I did not lose any email messages, but to access them, I had to reopen
evolution after it shut down. I've checked the evolution wiki page, but
have not found this behavior (closing immediately after
checking/downloading) described, so I don't know whether the action was
an evolution problem or a server problem.

Thank you for your help. If it is appropriate, please do forward my
comments to the evolution team. FWIW, I'm running evolution as part of
Ubuntu 7.04 (Gnome desktop) on an HP 552W desktop (2 ghz cpu with 500 mb
ram, original video, and a 160 gig HD). Please contact me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] if you need additional information.

Again, Thank You!

I don't know. After trying both Sven's and the backports, I still am

ii libvte9 0.16.8-0ubuntu1~7.04prevu1 Terminal emulator widget for

And for end key and ctrl-end I have (using Ctrl-V + end, etc):

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/debs$ end key: ^[OF
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/debs$ c-end comb: ^[OF

... gnome-terminal. Then in mrxvt (which works fine in this regard):

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/debs$ end key: ^[[8~

Now I get the following situations after a reboot:

1. I log in as snifer; CTRL+ALT+L doesn't work for snifer. I switch to
snifer2 (using fast-user-switch-applet); CTRL+ALT+L works for snifer2. I
switch back to snifer; CTRL+ALT+L still doesn't work for snifer.

2. I log in as snifer2; CTRL+ALT+L doesn't work for snifer2. I switch to

[Bug 135442] [gutsy] Unable to associate with already associated network on ipw3945 hardware

2007-08-28 Thread Scott Robinson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wpasupplicant

As detailed in bugs #121439, #119563 and probably more - the ipw3945
driver does not send an association event in the case of a requested
association to the already associated AP.

wpasupplicant expects this but won't request a disassociation due to the
bssid never being filled in its internal view of the wireless interface.

The attached patch can be placed in the debian/patches directory for
wpasupplicant and will fill in the data structures and request a
disassociation, thereby solving the problem.

[Bug 135201] Re: background color of symlink in konsole terminal

2007-08-28 Thread bajabaq
unfortunately the black on yellow is taken by SETGID and white on red is
taken by SETUID.

I haven't played with dircolors either, but I believe you are right
about leaving off the background setting would return it to transparent.

I agree this bug should be marked closed.

I still think black (or white) is a poor background choice, as stated
above, so maybe someone upstream will change the default values to
white(37) on magenta(45) or cyan(46). No, I am not expecting the LOG
link to work. It was just the example.

I get the same results as the OP. I am also running Gutsy Tribe 5

isolate it to a website, activity, etc, but no luck so far...

[Bug 135436] [apport] package libkdeedu3 failed to install/upgrade:

2007-08-28 Thread Tim LePes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdeedu

came up when completing a dist upgrade (using upgrade tool, gui) that
had failed before. last time it failed because i had lost my internet
connection. i don't believe that it has anything to do with this
particular package failing to install. but it may, so i mention it for
completeness. my upgrade was from edgy to fiesty. i could not get you
more details from the terminal output because when the upgrade tool
asked me if i wanted to report the bug, it launched firefox which spewed
too much stuff in the terminal window for me to catch anything useful in
the scroll-back buffer.

[Bug 129928] Re: [Gutsy] after this mornings updates gnome took >5minutes to load

2007-08-28 Thread John Vivirito
The problem is that it runs when gnome starts right after i log in from gdm
when gnome is loading is when it is noticed never when im using it (atleast i
never noticed it. Why is this different in feisty(my 2 feisty pcs do not
experence this issue only gutsy, so something must have changed and it would be
nice to know exactly what did.
+
nice run-parts --report /etc/cron.daily". If you change that so that the
delay is longer, it will hopefully trigger when your system is less busy.
You can do this by changing the "5" to a larger value, say 45 minutes.

the setting is 10 and that is default setting in gutsy.

sudo hdparm /dev/sdb:
/dev/sdb:
 IO_support=  0 (default 16-bit)
 readonly  =  0 (off)
 readahead = 256 (on)
 geometry  = 4998/255/63, sectors = 80293248, start = 0

sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sdb:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sdb

 Timing cached reads: 1022 MB in 2.00 seconds = 510.82 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 154 MB in 3.02 seconds = 51.04 MB/sec

here is everything in /dev/
the reason for me posting everything that is in /dev/ is because the commands
you gave me doesnt give any output that you are looking for, AFAIK gutsy maybe
feisty started using sd* as labels for HDs reguardless if its IDE or SATA
