[Bug 136933] Bullet Proof X shows confusing message when X can't start
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: displayconfig-gtk When X can't start, Bullet Proof X currently provides the following message; "Ubuntu failed to start the windowing system because it was unable to properly configure your hardware. You are now in the Failsafe X Mode. You can use this mode to configure your monitor and graphics card yourself. Or, you can cancel configuration and just run with this failsafe configuration." To understand this message, users must know: 1. What is a windowing system 2. What does 'failsafe' mean 3. What is an X mode Instead I suggest the following, much simpler message: Your graphics hardware is not properly set up. Please choose your monitor and graphics card, or click Cancel to use basic settings. ** Affects: displayconfig-gtk (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Bullet Proof X shows confusing message when X can't start https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/136933 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 86840] Re: live boot fail in Ubuntu 6.06(x86 or 64) and up
Most likely, its just anecdotal, but when driver hand-off is disabled Ubuntu install proceeds without stalling. Boot-up functions more smoothly. Don't know why this is. According to BIOS remarks on the EHCI hand-off, it(BIOS) should detect whether or not BIOS driver hand-off is necessary or not when enabled. Since Windows doesn't care either way, neither do I. I think Travis just needs to double check his grammer (I think that is what the s/you/so/ is about, but many people [myself included] don't understand that). Although these are commercial programs the issue of getting some 32-bit- only applications to run on 64-bit is wider than these examples. [Bug 133567] Re: [gutsy] long delay in nautilus on first access to vfat drive
I think the problem lies within the code that the system call sys_statfs64 executes, perhaps when it calls the vfs code for the vfat file system. I straced sudo nautilus to stop it sending the request to any existing process: 1. killall gnome-volume-manager 2. Attach drive 3. sudo -i 4. mkdir athena 5. mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 athena 6. strace -T -e trace=statfs64 nautilus athena/ 2>&1 | tee nautilus.log On the console display, the strace output stops at: statfs64("/root/athena", 84, The long delay occurs at this point, after which the strace output continues. The complete statfs64 call is: statfs64("/root/athena", 84, {f_type="MSDOS_SUPER_MAGIC", f_bsize=16384, f_blocks=7322563, f_bfree=4030796, f_bavail=4030796, f_files=0, f_ffree=0, f_fsid={0, 0}, f_namelen=260, f_frsize=16384}) = 0 <30.477798> I did an strace on gnomevfs-ls and it doesn't call sys_statfs64 on "/root/athena", which would explain why it executes quickly. If I do the same on an ext3 drive, which brings up the listing very quickly, instead of making a single call to sys_statfs64 on the folder, it makes a number of very quick calls to statfs64 on the folder. An example is: statfs64("/root/500gb", 84, {f_type="EXT2_SUPER_MAGIC", f_bsize=4096, f_blocks=120179764, f_bfree=10120650, f_bavail=10120650, f_files=61063168, f_ffree=61031300, f_fsid={-446547190, 219755455}, f_namelen=255, f_frsize=4096}) = 0 <0.000216> -- [gutsy] long delay in nautilus on first access to vfat drive https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/133567 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

We were wondering is this still an issue for you? The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed release. You can find out more about the development release at [WWW] http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ Thanks in advance ** Changed in: xkeyboard-config (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: None => xkeyboard-config Status: New => Incomplete -- my keyboard is missing caracters https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/83043 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 130325] How to reproduce it
It's very easy to reproduce: 1. Upgrade to Gutsy and (re)install the latest nvidia drivers. 2. Install the distributed compiz-fusion 3. Run glxgears FWIW I have heard of this happening on FC since at least January of this year. -- [nvidia-glx-new] glxgears, 3d apps crash X when using compiz-fusion (gutsy) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/130325 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 136887] Brightness hotkeys do not work properly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager I am using a dell Vostro 1500 running Gutsy Tribe 5. The power management correctly adjusts the brightness when I plug in and unplug the power, and the display responds properly when I change the brightness slider in gnome power management. But if I press the function-down hotkey, the brightness drops from 100% (or whatever it is set to in power management) to 30% (the second lowest), then to 0% on the second press. Pressing the up key repeatedly causes the brightness to change between 30% and 0%. Opening the power management preferences app causes the brightness to increase back to 100%. I am attaching lshal output, is anything else needed? ** Affects: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Brightness hotkeys do not work properly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/136887 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 130450] Re: compiz-fusion does not start on login
Not fixable? I don't understand - I'm happy *personally* to run compiz each time I log in. BUT, as usability a issue it seems to be unacceptable that a user running compiz does not get a window manager when they log in. This can be a major pain - for example, when I log in the windows (without the window manager) obscure the top gnome panel and applications menu, making it quite painful to get to a terminal to start compiz etc. This is not satisfactory for an everyday user. Am I missing something (happy if I am...)? -- compiz-fusion does not start on login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/130450 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 136886] Day '34' out of range 1..31 at /usr/share/perl5/Mail/SpamAssassin/Util.pm line 446
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: spamassassin I keep getting messages in my logs at the end of the month like this: Day '34' out of range 1..31 at /usr/share/perl5/Mail/SpamAssassin/Util.pm line 446 I know this is due to spammers not understanding elementary date math, but Spamassassin should handle it better.
