[Bug 124876] Re: Should install nvidia-glx-new instead of nvidia-glx for video cards that can handle -new

2007-09-02 Thread afonic
I just tried it in Gutsy and even though I have a GeForce 8800GTS,
restricted manager installed nvidia-glx instead of nvidia-glx-new which
doesn't even support my card. Of course X failed to start upon restart.

I don't have an older card though to test if it installs nvidia-glx-
legacy if your card only works with the old drivers.

Well, I had x11-common installed without ncurses-term ... so I guess
there is a bug here somewhere.

Also, I can't spot the dependency you mention from

[Bug 48412] Re: Disk detected as unallocated

2007-09-02 Thread Ari Torhamo
I'm trying to install Gutsy Tribe 5, but I also have this problem with
partitions. Neither GParted or the installer partitioner (I suppose they
are different nowadays?) can see them. Fdisk lists the partitions
normally, and I can see them in Device Manager. I can acces the
partitions normally from my current installation and the Gutsy Live CD
- I have no problems reaching the contents of any of my partitions in
any situation. It's just that GParted and the installer partitioner
can't see them.

Fdisk output:

[Bug 136934] Suspend and hibernate not working

2007-09-02 Thread elyk
Public bug reported:

I'm running gutsy tribe 5, and after a recent upgrade suspend and hibernate
stopped working. Hibernate is gone from the logoff menu, and pressing the
function key to hibernate results in an "action forbidden" message telling me
that hibernation is not available. Suspend appears to work, but when I attempt
to recover I get stuck at a black screen with a single white flashing
underscore in the upper left corner.
I have also attempted the suggestions in
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=471855, using uswsusp. S2ram does not
work. S2disk mostly works, but sound is disabled upon recovery.

[Bug 126214] Re: suspend to ram 2.6.22-8

2007-09-02 Thread Paulo Dias
Hi, i can confirm that the change in 2.6.22-10, using SLUB instead of
SLAB broke the ATI fglrx driver 8.40.x as of the time of writing. If i
recompile the ubuntu kernel source and change SLUB back to SLAB,
resume/suspend with the fglrx works perfectly again.

I recommend doing more tests before changing the default kernel to SLUB,
fglrx is one example but i bet it's not the only one.

Best regards.

[Bug 136933] Bullet Proof X shows confusing message when X can't start

2007-09-02 Thread Mike MacCana
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: displayconfig-gtk

When X can't start, Bullet Proof X currently provides the following
message;

"Ubuntu failed to start the windowing system because it was unable to
properly configure your hardware.

You are now in the Failsafe X Mode. You can use this mode to configure
your monitor and graphics card yourself. Or, you can cancel
configuration and just run with this failsafe configuration."

To understand this message, users must know:

1. What is a windowing system
2. What does 'failsafe' mean
3. What is an X mode

Instead I suggest the following, much simpler message:

Your graphics hardware is not properly set up.

Please choose your monitor and graphics card, or click Cancel to use
basic settings.

Re: [Bug 86840] Re: live boot fail in Ubuntu 6.06(x86 or 64) and up

2007-09-02 Thread Christopher
Most likely, its just anecdotal, but when driver hand-off is disabled
Ubuntu install proceeds without stalling. Boot-up functions more
smoothly. Don't know why this is. According to BIOS remarks on the
EHCI hand-off, it(BIOS) should detect whether or not BIOS driver
hand-off is necessary or not when enabled. Since Windows doesn't care
either way, neither do I.

[Bug 130450] Re: compiz-fusion does not start on login

2007-09-02 Thread Thomas Wolfe
I think Travis just needs to double check his grammer (I think that is what the
s/you/so/ is about, but many people [myself included] don't understand that).
Question is, why is the session saving compiz.real instead of compiz, and why
is it that that cannot be fixed (it is a technical problem, of course it can be
fixed, now social problems are almost impossible to fix).
(you the proper environment to run compiz.real is not saved. does not make any

  I would like to see DebTorrent packaged for Ubuntu Gutsty (or +1). It
  would allow us to *eventually* increase the scalability of Ubuntu,
  possible uses include for downloading large games.

  "To expand on the BitTorrent protocol and application to work effectively
with large, constantly updating collections of files, and therefore enable the
efficient peer-to-peer downloading of Debian packages from an APT repository.
  Features

  * Downloads from peers, increasing the available bandwidth to the user
  * Reduces the bandwidth requirements needed to setup a repository of
packages
  * Seamlessly integrates with the current APT tool
  * Automatically falls back to downloading from an HTTP mirror when peers
are not available

  This software is open-source and is released at no charge under the
  terms of the MIT license."

  http://debtorrent.alioth.debian.org/
  http://wiki.debian.org/DebTorrent

  This bug report was originally for apt-torrent but DebTorrent has a
  better solution, I think. Plus it is in active development in Debian.

[Bug 136894] gnome-art 'install background' does not select the installed background

2007-09-02 Thread Leif
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-art

Gutsy x86, updated everything to 9/2 including proposed updates.

When browsing backgrounds, the "Install" button downloads the background
and makes it available to the "Appearance" preferences application, but
does not set it as the actual desktop background. To the user, it is as
if the "Install" button does nothing, which is confusing and not
satisfactory.

Captured output from running gnome-art in a terminal, then selecting
"Art->Backgrounds->GNOME", and hitting "Install" on the first theme
follows:

It seems as though the program in feisty, 'gnome-background-properties',
has been deprecated in gutsy in favor of 'gnome-appearance-properties',
although I don't have a feisty machine handy to test this. If someone
can confirm the existence of gnome-appearance-properties in feisty, this
should be an easy fix for gutsy.

[Bug 62924] Re: Google Earth and Enemy Territory installers fail on amd64. Other programs may be affected.

2007-09-02 Thread TJ
Although these are commercial programs the issue of getting some 32-bit-
only applications to run on 64-bit is wider than these examples. The
integrated installers are generally the problem - not the applications
themselves.

The solution (on Gutsy at least) is:

$ sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
$ wget
http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/i/ia32-libs-gtk/ia32-libs-gtk_16_amd64.deb
$ sudo dpkg --force-all -i ia32-libs-gtk_16_amd64.deb
$ sudo apt-get -f install

Now you should be able to install 32-bit applications:

$ sudo ./GoogleEarthLinux.bin
$ sudo ln -s /opt/google-earth/googleearth /usr/bin/googleearth
$ googleearth

[Bug 136892] gnome-mag fails to follow cursor in textarea beyond line wrap

2007-09-02 Thread D S
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-mag

When using gnome-mag with epiphany (which is much more usable than
firefox with the mag) cursor following fails when reaching a wrap to new
line in a textarea. Even repositioning the mag on the new line at the
cursor fails to encourage proper cursor following and typing causes the
mag to flip back to the end of the first line.

Once cursor following is lost, it fails to follow in elements it would
have followed previously.

This is using gnome-mag 0.14.3 in feisty.

This was spotted using Orange/wanadoo webmail.

[Bug 109668] Re: Network-manager connects to wifi only conditionally

2007-09-02 Thread nofrak
A more accurate description of the problem would have been that it only
would connect to a wireless network if some other network were also
available. I have installed Gutsy now, and the problem has been
corrected. I know at least one other person on the forum was having
this problem, but if there's not much outcry I wouldn't rank it to
highly in terms of fixing the Feisty version.

Hi zeddock. Sorry, my comments weren't specifically addressed to your

I'd doubt that removing & re-connecting your wlan card will make much

[Bug 133567] Re: [gutsy] long delay in nautilus on first access to vfat drive

2007-09-02 Thread Rocko
I think the problem lies within the code that the system call
sys_statfs64 executes, perhaps when it calls the vfs code for the vfat
file system.

I straced sudo nautilus to stop it sending the request to any existing
process:

1. killall gnome-volume-manager
2. Attach drive
3. sudo -i
4. mkdir athena
5. mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 athena
6. strace -T -e trace=statfs64 nautilus athena/ 2>&1 | tee nautilus.log

On the console display, the strace output stops at:

statfs64("/root/athena", 84,

The long delay occurs at this point, after which the strace output
continues. The complete statfs64 call is:

statfs64("/root/athena", 84, {f_type="MSDOS_SUPER_MAGIC", f_bsize=16384,
f_blocks=7322563, f_bfree=4030796, f_bavail=4030796, f_files=0,

I did an strace on gnomevfs-ls and it doesn't call sys_statfs64 on
"/root/athena", which would explain why it executes quickly.

If I do the same on an ext3 drive, which brings up the listing very
quickly, instead of making a single call to sys_statfs64 on the folder,
it makes a number of very quick calls to statfs64 on the folder. An
example is:

statfs64("/root/500gb", 84, {f_type="EXT2_SUPER_MAGIC", f_bsize=4096,
f_blocks=120179764, f_bfree=10120650, f_bavail=10120650,
f_files=61063168, f_ffree=61031300, f_fsid={-446547190, 219755455},
f_namelen=255, f_frsize=4096}) = 0 <0.000216>

There's no extra " at line 115 of the script. Quite possibly you're
using an old version and it's already fixed. Try 1.4.7...also the
Debian patch will be in 1.4.8.

One idea is that every program is free to set its prompt for the terminal (e.g.
Password or swipe your finger: ) but use the traditional "Password: " elsewhere
(e.g. for graphical environment).
You can find a patch for the pam_thinkfinger.c attached.

[Bug 83043] Re: my keyboard is missing caracters

2007-09-02 Thread Alex Mayorga Adame
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you?
The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live
environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It
would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it
fixed in the actively developed release. You can find out more about the
development release at [WWW] http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/

Thanks in advance

[Bug 130325] How to reproduce it

2007-09-02 Thread wgscott
It's very easy to reproduce:

1. Upgrade to Gutsy and (re)install the latest nvidia drivers.
2. Install the distributed compiz-fusion
3. Run glxgears

FWIW I have heard of this happening on FC since at least January of this
year.

[Bug 136887] Brightness hotkeys do not work properly

2007-09-02 Thread elyk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I am using a dell Vostro 1500 running Gutsy Tribe 5. The power
management correctly adjusts the brightness when I plug in and unplug
the power, and the display responds properly when I change the
brightness slider in gnome power management. But if I press the
function-down hotkey, the brightness drops from 100% (or whatever it is
set to in power management) to 30% (the second lowest), then to 0% on
the second press. Pressing the up key repeatedly causes the brightness
to change between 30% and 0%. Opening the power management preferences
app causes the brightness to increase back to 100%. I am attaching lshal
output, is anything else needed?

[Bug 130450] Re: compiz-fusion does not start on login

2007-09-02 Thread Daniel Harvey
Not fixable? I don't understand - I'm happy *personally* to run compiz
each time I log in.

BUT, as usability a issue it seems to be unacceptable that a user
running compiz does not get a window manager when they log in. This can
be a major pain - for example, when I log in the windows (without the
window manager) obscure the top gnome panel and applications menu,
making it quite painful to get to a terminal to start compiz etc. This
is not satisfactory for an everyday user.

Am I missing something (happy if I am...)?

[Bug 136886] Day '34' out of range 1..31 at /usr/share/perl5/Mail/SpamAssassin/Util.pm line 446

2007-09-02 Thread Christian Holtje

I keep getting messages in my logs at the end of the month like this:
Day '34' out of range 1..31 at /usr/share/perl5/Mail/SpamAssassin/Util.pm line

I know this is due to spammers not understanding elementary date math,
but Spamassassin should handle it better.

This looks like it was fixed in SpamAssassin 3.2.0 or greater.
