This bug still exist for me, I'm using Gutsy released. In my case, this
gigantic font appear at the login screen too and it won't go away no matter how
many time i rebooted it. The windows titlebar gigantic font will disappear

[Bug 155666] Re: "Desktop Cube" is geometrically inaccurate

2007-10-21 Thread Rouben Tchakhmakhtchian
Thank you for your observation. While you are technically absolutely
correct (obviously so when Compiz runs in single-"cube" dual-monitor
mode, where it's quite obvious that it's a right prism spanning multiple
monitors and not a cube), however, the change you are requesting isn't
really a bug with Compiz per se, certainly not from a programming
perspective. This is more of a nomenclature/terminology/documentation
issue which should be forwarded upstream to the Compiz development
community, in my opinion. Note that sometimes inaccurate nomenclature is
used for marketing/promotional purposes, where a well-known term such as
"cube" is used in lieu of a lesser-known (possibly) term such as "right
prism". Either way, I don't think that a bug tracker is the best place
for discussing this sort of nomenclature issue. Have you tried raising
this issue on the compiz forum? Perhaps the "Project feedback" section?
http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/forumdisplay.php?f=103

Thank you very much for reporting this issue and please note that my
opinion is not "set in stone" by any means. If you feel strongly about
having this issue raised on launchpad, please feel free to respond.

Right. Preferably you should submit the bug to the Gnome bug tracker,
so that it can be inspected by upstream. Getting a solution which
upstream adopts is much better than maintaining a difference in
Ubuntu, since it both creates more work and introduces inconsistency
in behaviour.

[Bug 50214] Re: can't connect to hidden network

2007-10-21 Thread anonym
This is the exact procedure I went about to get my internet working again. I
lost the package for 0.6.5-0ubuntu14, so I was forced to use those for Feisty,
which work just as well. (This is for a i386 system running Kubuntu; in order
words, I'm using KNetworkManager, not the GNOME one. Modify accordingly.)
The Feisty package for NetworkManager has a slight dependency flaw in that it
requires libiw28 to be installed, so that has to be done first (Gutsy is
packaged with libiw29).

sudo apt-get remove --assume-yes --purge network-manager network-manger-kde
wget
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/w/wireless-tools/libiw28_28-1ubuntu3_i386.deb
wget
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/n/network-manager/network-manager_0.6.4-6ubuntu7_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i libiw28_28-1ubuntu3_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i network-manager_0.6.4-6ubuntu7_i386.deb
sudo apt-get install --assume-yes network-manager-kde

Only thing now is that I have a nagging button in the corner to tell me
to upgrade to the latest network-manager that I have to avoid. Adept
doesn't have a feature to lock packages. At least I can place a hold in
apt-get/aptitude on the package...

Additional notes for those that are interested:
* My wireless chipset is the bcm4319, so yeah, this wasn't exactly easy to
diagnose to be the problem.
* I got wireless working initially by ndiswrapper, but, of course, it didn't
connect to my hidden network, but could connect to unhidden networks just fine.

2007-10-21 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
Agreed, this is an issue that needs some sorting. I'll see what I can
do over the next week to get this one rolling.

I'm also wondering if this should be considered somewhat long the lines
of a security issue. It's not a big security issue, but I could see how
someone could present a user with a simple shell script telling them
that their script would do something like install multimedia codecs,
only to find out that it removed libc or something ridiculous like that.

[Bug 155675] Can't switch to virtual console (Ctrl-Alt-F1) in Gutsy

2007-10-21 Thread Vikas BN
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I installed Gutsy couple of days back. Since then, I haven't been
able to switch to any of the virtual consoles. When I try to
switch to the virtual consoles, I just get a black screen or some random
  colored pixels throughout the screen.

If I run compiz, and switch back to X, system freezes. If i'm running
metacity, then there's no freeze and I can work in X.

  My system:
  Dell D610,
  Intel Pentium M 1.73GHz
  1 GB RAM,
   ATI mobility video card,
  (using ati driver)

This issue was not there in Fiesty and I was using ati driver there as well.
This is a fresh install of Gutsy, not an upgrade.

[Bug 155671] OpenOffice.org crashing when opening this document

2007-10-21 Thread Peter Wagner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I have received a document in .doc format and didn't manage to open it
in OOo Writer under Ubuntu. When I've opened the file (from somebody
else) in Word and re-saved as "Word 6.0" (before it was just "Word"), it
blew up from 1.6 to 5.0 MB, but was fully readable in OOo.

So to me there is no primary need to have it "cracked", but maybe there
is a hint in detecting other bugs.

Originally I have added my crash to bug #140622, which seemed similar,
but Chris Cheney recommended me to opena separate bug as there are
different reasons for crashing. I quote the history:

Zamox, (bug #140622)

The quick solution to this problem is to just install openoffice.org
meta package and/or the openoffice.org-base package. Something that
writer needs to display the document is in the openoffice.org-base
package. I intend to track down more of these related issue during UDS
next week.

Peter,

Your problem doesn't seem to be resolved by installing openoffice.org-
base so you should open your bug under a separate bug number. I will be
marking this bug as a duplicate of bug #52847.

Thanks,

Chris Cheney

[Bug 155673] External monitor stopped working after upgrade

2007-10-21 Thread Oscar
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to gutsy it would seem that my external monitor doesn't
work anymore.

After trying a reboot things go like this.
Pre kdm - > black screen in external monitor/ internal laptop monitor is fine
kdm start -> KDM login screen on external monitor .Internal monitor goes all
white with black spots in it. very weird.
kde start -> Internal monitor is fine again. External monitor goes black.

Something appears to be very wrong here. I think the VGA-port is fine

right.

[Bug 133765] Re: gutsy md module not present in ramdisk

2007-10-21 Thread Paul McEnery
I tried extracting the contents of both the 2.6.20 and 2.6.22 kernels. I
copied the lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic (gutsy) into the lib/modules
directory of the feisty initrd. This booted up no problem. This proves
that the kernel is NOT the issue here.

As I said before, I believe the problem to be in either udev or the
mdadm command that ends up in the initrd.

I guess the next exercise is to try replacing only the mdadm command in
the gutsy standard initrd with the one from Feisty.

[Bug 155666] "Desktop Cube" is geometrically inaccurate

2007-10-21 Thread John Dong
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Compiz uses the term "Desktop Cube" to refer to a particular arrangement
of virtual desktops in 3 dimensions composed of each screen on a lateral
face of a polyhedron, and user-defined static caps on the bases.

This term is geometrically inaccurate. In fact, the desktop is NEVER a
"cube" unless the screen resolution is in a 1:1 ratio, which tends to
rarely be the case.

The most common arrangement of the desktop cube, with four identical
faces, each with a lenth != height, can be generalized as a rectangular
prism (informally), or more properly, a cuboid.

More generally, with number of workspaces n != 4, the desktop can best
be generalized as a right prism.

The current naming scheme propagates ignorance towards proper geometry
terminology to the entire Linux desktop market, which is highly
undesirable.

[Bug 155665] [x64] libxml2 support not compiled in to wine, but libxml2 available in ia32-libs

2007-10-21 Thread Daniel Pittman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wine

G'day. When running a Windows application (Fantasy Grounds Demo) under
Wine I see the following error:

This program tried to use an XMLDocument object, but
libxml2 support was not present at compile time.
CoCreateInstance Failed, last error 0

The application then segfaults, presumably because the developer never
bothered with error checking on that COM object creation call.

In any case the libxml2 library is present in ia32-libs:

rc:0 ] dpkg -L ia32-libs |grep libxml
/usr/lib32/libxml2.so.2.6.30
/usr/lib32/libxml2.so.2

I do note this bit of additional text on the Wine wiki regarding
building Wine on 64 bit Ubuntu 7.10:

http://wiki.winehq.org/WineOn64bit#head-
eb4de1da767e6e648d77c004566a71d0307cb737

I suspect the same issue is at play with bug 144419 since the symptoms
are more or less identical -- just a different 32-bit libarry that
wasn't found at build time.

Regards, Daniel

[Bug 155668] Problems with default KDE splash screen after upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy

[Bug 155664] radeon 9200 Pro xorg server can't do 1600x1200 resolution in gutsy Gibbon

2007-10-21 Thread Michael Hirsch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

I have a dual opteron 64bit system that I've been upgrading since 6.04.
In the last year I put a 1600x1200 20 inch LCD screen on it. The
xserver-xorg-video-ati driver had no problem with it in 7.04. I don't
recal for sure if I had the same monitor with 6.10, though I think I
did. lspci report my graphics card like this:

05:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO]
(rev 01)
05:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO]
(Secondary) (rev 01)

With the upgrade to Gutsy (7.10) I can't get this high resolution. In
fact, the only way I've been able to get 1280x1024 is by using the
vesafb driver rather than the ATI specific driver. X always reports
that there is no such supported resolution. I've entered the correct
horiz and vertical frequencies. I even found an old log and entered the
modeline, to no avail.

I've installed xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.7.195+git20071020tv_amd64.deb
that was recommended on some posting found through Google, but it made
no difference.

[Bug 149641] Re: logcheck fails when auth.log.1.gz missing

2007-10-21 Thread Ariel Faigon
Note that fixing this bug is a necessary, but not a sufficient condition
to make logcheck work on gutsy.

After fixing this manually, I still get one more failure later from logtail:
File /var/log/syslog.offset cannot be created. Check your permissions:
Permission denied

To solve this problem too, I had to manually create the offset files and make
them owned by logcheck:
sudo touch /var/log/syslog.offset /var/log/auth.log.offset
sudo chown logcheck /var/log/syslog.offset /var/log/auth.log.offset

In addition, logtail when running as 'logcheck' cannot read files under
/var/log which aren't world readable,
Fixing this required giving logtail a setgid and group adm:

sudo chgrp adm /usr/sbin/logtail
sudo chmod g+s /usr/sbin/logtail

only after fixing all the above logcheck finally works for me on gutsy.

[Bug 118723] Re: KMilo/Volume Hotkeys regression

2007-10-21 Thread Tabrez Mohammed
I can confirm that the patch fixes the volume control. The only minor
gripe I have is that the dialog for changing volume with the buttons is
the large, ugly one from Feisty and earlier. Any way to keep the newer
dialog after installing the patched version of kdeutils?

[Bug 58790] Re: kmix: dcop calls to adjust volume should affect user-set master channel

2007-10-21 Thread Michael D. Stemle, Jr.
** Description changed:

When the user sets a channel as the master channel in KMix by using
Right Click -> Select Master Channel, kmix's dcop calls for changing
volume and muting should respect that. Currently, no matter what, those
dcop calls affect the left-most channel in kmix's display.

This is a problem for some sound cards, where the left most mixer is not a
master control. For example, my left-most is "PCM", which does very little. I
have to set kmix to my "Front" mixer, which is equivalent to master. However,
my laptop volume keys still control "PCM" instead of "Front", because (after
investigation) the kmix dcop calls kmilo uses are ignoring my selections.

- This affects both Dapper and Edgy.
+ This affects both Dapper and Edgy and Gutsy[1].

I've downloaded gdesklets off the site and compiled that but still had

[Bug 89381] Re: File Upload dialog has no preview for images

2007-10-21 Thread Christoffer Sørensen
Gabriel,

I completely agree.

However, I think that Gnome upstream (and Ubuntu also) has closed the
bug about general preview functionality in gtkfilechooser. I don't
understand the reason behind this decision.

It seems very inefficient to enable it in all programs.

If I kill Nautilus then trackerd starts going crazy and I have to kill trackerd
as well.
I have seen this on 2 separate computers one with desktop effects one without.
I haven't been able to find a way to reproduce this though. Seems totally
random. I'll try and get a backtrace if I can.

[Bug 154189] Re: Upgrade to 7.10 fails to fetch main/binary-amd64/Packages.gz

2007-10-21 Thread Michael Hirsch
Removing the koffice-latest repository did get me past this problem.
The error message should at the least suggest that as a solution. Even
better would be to offer to exclude the repository without an upgrade
repository.

Re: [Bug 77332] Re: /dev/video0 and /dev/video1 not rememberded

2007-10-21 Thread George Fragos
My problem envolved an ivtv TV card, bttv TV card and a webcam, all which
are assigned to /dev/video{#}. I solved this by creating /etc/udev/95-
perso.rules with the following lines:

KERNEL=="video*", SYSFS{vendor}=="0x", SYSFS{device}=="0x0016",
SYSFS{name}=="ivtv0 encoder MPEG", SYMLINK+="video/pvr150"
KERNEL=="video*", SYSFS{vendor}=="0x109e", SYSFS{device}=="0x036e",
SYMLINK+="video/bttv"
KERNEL=="video*", SYSFS{vendor}=="0x046d", SYSFS{device}=="0x092e",
SYMLINK+="video/webcam"

Now I just configure applications like tvtime as in /dev/video/bttv instead
of /dev/video0 for example.

Re: [Bug 151016] Re: New in 2.6.22-13: System doesn't always wake from suspend

2007-10-21 Thread Tim Hull
I just noticed that someone else mentioned this on the Ubuntu MacBook wiki
and directed MacBook users to the 2.6.22-12 kernel as the last working
kernel. Indeed, I am actually running that kernel right now so that I can
have suspend.

Anyway, It would be nice to get this fixed so that MacBook users don't have
to pick between reliable suspend and supported kernel updates... I started
working on it by trying to revert a few ACPI patches, notably this:

  * clockevents: remove the suspend/resume workaround^Wthinko

However, the issue persisted. I am confident that it was introduced between
-12 and -13, though - as I recall this happening starting with -13 and -12
(from the Beta release) definitely does NOT have the issue.

[Bug 155658] window border flaps or oscillates by itself

2007-10-21 Thread Phil Colbourn
Public bug reported:

Hard to explain: It happens when the following is true:

* a non-maximized window title bar is touching the top panel
* when dragging a window left and right
* window extends across two workspaces (

The title bar seems to bend upwards underneath the panel. When dragging
has finished (mouse button is released) the windows does one of two
things:

1. it 'dances' with the right side (or the left side depending on whether the
window is on the left or right side of the screen) of the window jumping up and
down continuously. The content is constantly adjusting the the new window size
(kind-of a nice effect but difficult to use)
2. the window dances a few times then the whole window slides down the screen
an inch and stops.

I have a video that I can send to someone.
I am running gutsy and only noticed it today (October 22, 2007) after an
upgrade (but this may be a red-herring).

[Bug 129910] Re: tty[1-6] are active but display nothing in Gutsy

2007-10-21 Thread ardchoille
*** UPDATE: FIXED ***

ardchoille here. I fixed it. I have all tty's working properly now in
Kubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) with nVidia GeForce 6200 card (and nvidia-glx
installed) on an AMD Sempron 2800+.

The problem started after using the Restricted Manager to install nvidia
drivers - it automatically installed nvidia-glx-new without giving me
any options. This somehow caused tty's 1-6 to stop working.

This time I installed the nvidia drivers manually with:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx && sudo nvidia-glx-config enable && sudo
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

I did not alter /etc/initramfs-tools/modules or /etc/modprobe.d
/blacklist-framebuffer in any way, nor did I run update-initramfs, and
I didn't modprobe anything.

After rebooting, I have all tty's working properly as they were in
Feisty. So, the problem is caused either by the nvidia-glx-new drivers
or the Restricted Manager GUI/app. I probably wouldn't have figured this
out had I not been doing this on the command line for over a year.

Score: command line 1, gui 0

Thank you for your bug report, and for trying to make Ubuntu better.
However, this isn't a bug in any Ubuntu package - rather, one of your
configuration files (/etc/apt/sources.list) is not correct, probably as
a result of trying to add a 3rd party repository.

You can regenerate a correct source.list file at: . If you have any further problems with this,
