[Bug 136799] Re: kde: powertop says restarting kdesktop, kwin, kicker saves ~3 wakeups/second

2007-10-24 Thread Alan Jenkins
I've found the culprit, at least for kdesktop.

kdelibs
kdecore/kstartupinfo.cpp

KStartupInfo::startups_cleanup()

I _think_ the problem is that I'm ending up with a startup notification
filed in silent_startups, which isn't going away. Unfortunately the
identifier for it is an empty string, so no help there.

Silent startup notifications last 10 minutes before they timeout and are
removed, as opposed the usual 30 seconds.

A silent startup notification is one which has been (temporarily)
suspended. It looks like this is supposed to be used for splash
screens, so you can avoid seeing the notification at the same time the
splashscreen is up.

Whatever is creating this startup notification should remove it once
they're done, instead of just leaving it as silent. For now though, I
don't see any reason to leave startup notifications running longer than
30s, silent or otherwise, so locally I've just removed the distinction.
(6 lines removed, no lines added or modified). The lines in question
are marked with TODO, by the way :-)

It's still compiling so I haven't tested this yet.

[Bug 151544] Re: [Gutsy] GNOME takes too much time to load during system boot

2007-10-24 Thread yostral
I have the same problem.

From grub to login page : very fast. But from login to desktop, I need
about one minute, with the hard drive always working.

I have a fresh install of Gutsy. I don't use compiz. I have a nvidia
7900Go GS with nvidia drivers, 2Go ram. It has never done that with
previous Ubuntu releases neither other distros.

[Bug 88208] Re: Fails to complete installation onto 2GB disk

2007-10-24 Thread mch50
This bug is present in the GUI installer and the Text based installer. I
had similar experiences with trying to use a 1gb disk in a VMWare
system. This is obviously less than the system requirements which I
failed to check until today.

However, the check for sufficient free space is such a trivial step that
it should be added ASAP to the installer. I imagine this bug will really
hit people who try to use ubuntu in VMs and try and allocate
conservative disk sizes.

[Bug 156678] Profiles not saved

Public bug reported:

Once the distribution is started for the very first time, if you launch
konqueror as root (i.e.: using 'kdesu konqueror') instead of launch as normal
user ('konqueror'), then your konqueror configuration file
(~/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/konqueror.rc) and all the saved profiles

This means that in all subsequent konqueror sessions launched as normal user

[Bug 153536] Re: [REGRESSION] Openoffice Italic doesn't work

2007-10-24 Thread anachreon
I can also confirm this bug on Kubuntu Gutsy. The problem did not exist
before I upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy. Basically, italic and bold work
by hitting ctrl+b or ctrl+i IF I have text selected. But if I want to
type a word in italic or bold by either clicking the button or hitting
the hotkey and THEN typing, they don't work. Similarly, if I have
already typed a bold or italic word and want to turn off bold or italic
formatting, I have to type bold or italic text, select it, and THEN
click the formatting button or press the hotkey, I can't simply have the
cursor after the formatted text and turn bold or italic off.

I used El Chupacabras instructions as well. I have added a vga=791 in my

 fbcon
 vsafb
 vga16fb
I changed /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer
blacklist vesafb - #blacklist vesafb
blacklist vga16fb - #blacklist vga16fb

After that you have to do sudo update-initramfs -u
and that's it.

[Bug 84487] Re: removing deb leaves symlink which causes apache to fail starting

2007-10-24 Thread Reinhard Tartler
backuppc (3.0.0-4ubuntu1) hardy; urgency=low

  * Merge from Debian unstable
  * Remaining Ubuntu changes:
- Use LSB functions in the init script, and make /var/run/backuppc if
  needed.
- Remove dependancy on wwwconfig-common.
- We like apache 2 more, so move it first to the alternatives list.
- Bump libfile-rsyncp-perl and rsync from Suggests to Depends.
- Remove stop script symlinks from rc0 and rc6.
- Don't chown /var/run/backuppc in the postinst.
- Don't move /var/lib/backuppc/conf/* (and then delete) to /etc/backuppc
in rules, upstream is shipping the config files in /etc/backuppc
  themselves.
- Unfuzzify debian/config.pl.diff.
- Munge Maintainer field as per spec.
- Add .conf to the symlink removal code in prerm. (LP: #84487)

[Bug 152277] Re: vim-runtime (Gutsy): ada.vim with syntax errors

2007-10-24 Thread samjh
Until a permanent solution is found:

Go to http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=1609 and download the
latest .vba archive.
As of time of writing, it is vba-4.5.0:
http://www.vim.org/scripts/download_script.php?src_id=7686

Save the vba file to a place of your own choosing.

Fire up the vimball archive tool with superuser privileges. Example:
sudo vim ~/temp/vba-4.5.0

The vimball archive tool will open. Issue the so % command, thus:
:so %

It will install the Ada tool package for vim, including the correct
syntax high-lighter.

[Bug 156680] [feisty-gutsy] server do-release-upgrade fails because none of the *buntu-dekstop meta-package is found

2007-10-24 Thread MarianoAbsatz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I followed the instructions in
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GutsyUpgrades#head-
f2435a45758bb5836f8e5b87e90045463f8c6ec7 to upgrade a server hosted in
slicehost (I had previously upgraded the -mostly- empty server from
dapper to edgy and from edgy to feisty without a hitch... but added a
few packages after the feisty upgrade).

As do-release-upgrade complained about no longer manteined packages, I
tried to remove all of those, but one (liblzo1) was reinstalled when I
reinstalled update-manager-core.

Anyway, browsing the logs, the update-manager seems to be complaining
about it not being able to identify my ubuntu version because none of
the *buntu-desktop is installed (which is logical, since I use NO
DESKTOP AT ALL, cause this is a server).

I have a fresh 7.10 install though. There were some updates for Adept

activated the pre-released updates after which some new updates became
available, which fixed the problem. I'm still waiting for official

So with Animated Pooldown ON tilda works fine. It shows this GTK errors on

And with Animated Pooldown OFF tilda works fine after start but after hiding
and showing it back again tilda window gets blank.

Hope it helps to track the bug.

[Bug 156675] Re: problem playing h264 coded videos with gstreamer related players

2007-10-24 Thread Loïc Minier
The upstream bug says that ffmpeg has a fix in SVN, but the fix is /not/
in gst-ffmpeg yet (CVS version of gst-ffmpeg isn't fixed). It's rather
complicated to prepare a stable upload and the fix isn't isolated nor is
it included in upstream's code yet, so the best is to wait for upstream
to include it (and test it).

[Bug 129081] Re: [needs-packaging] Mumble

2007-10-24 Thread Thorvald Natvig
All right.

The current work in progress is the current Mumble SVN from sourceforge
(See http://mumble.sf.net for links). That contains the debian/
directory I used to build the binaries we have on sourceforge. At
Justin's request, the debian/ dir has been removed from the tarballs as
I understood this is more in line with current philosophy?

Anyway.

The current things missing from the package are:

- Fixing of Ubuntu bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/155784 . The Qt supplied
with hardy does dlopen() on libssl.so, which doesn't exist. The bug is
currently marked invalid, but it's a showstopper for any application using the
new features in Qt4.3.
- The mumble binary handles the mumble:// URLs. The package needs to register
'mumble' as a protocol handled by the mumble binary both for Gnome, KDE and
whatever other programs are necesarry. I'm not really sure how to do this
globally in a clean way, but I suppose the freedesktop people have a good
solution.
- Both mumble and murmurd are missing man pages. This has been on my own todo
list for quite some time, but the only place it's needed is to get lintian to
stop complaining. If I provide a man page which says please see murmurd -h,
will that suffice? Experience has taught me that multiple documentation
documents usually mean all but one are outdated, and we already have the -h
output and the README.
- A user for murmurd. While I've done my best to avoid any security problems
and follow good security practices, and we have also passed static code
analysis from Klocwork, I utterly and strongly discourage running it as root.
- Registration of Dbus permissions for murmurd (See
http://mumble.sourceforge.net/DBus - the /etc/dbus-1/... stuff needs to be
added to the package)
- A murmur.ini file customized to a system-wide installation. Hm. I guess it
makes sense to store murmur.ini itself in /etc somewhere, and the default log
should be in /var/log and the database should be.. somewhere in /var?
- A init.d script suitable for Ubuntu (which passes the -ini /etc/murmur.ini
parameter as well)
- The murmur.pl and weblist.pl scripts are actually CGI scripts. It is probably
very beneficial if these get automatically installed as cgi scripts runnable by
apache, and also installed in such a way that at least murmur.pl has correct
permissions for the SQLite database. I forgot to add weblist.pl to the 1.1.0
tarball so you'll have to pull that from SVN for now.

As you can see the list is quite long :( I have had plans to fix all of
these, but with limited time and the choice between fixing crashbugs and
packaging details, crashbugs have to take priority.

However, if you can fix the above I will be very happy. If you also
grant me permission to check the resulting build files into SVN so we
can use them for our sourceforge releases, I will be even happier :)

[Bug 152254] Re: Ubuntu 7.10 Gusty Beta: REGRESSION: Laptop won't hibernate (but crashes)

2007-10-24 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Since I submitted this bug report 11 days ago and it didn't get no
attention so far, I found in Gutsy's release notes this bug :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-restricted-
modules-2.6.22/+bug/121653 that seems to cover the same issue.

There's a good probability that this bug report is then a duplicate,
even though I don't see the prblem appearing only for suspend to RAM
but as well for hibernate to disk.

Having a laptop that won't suspend nor hibernate since its distro was
upgraded is something I feel like a painful downgrade...

[Bug 148118] Re: tracker searches sometimes don't work, reporting Process /usr/bin/trackerd exited with status 0

2007-10-24 Thread Kaihsu Tai
Sometimes it took a long time for tracker-search-tool to give this error
message without any results ‘Did not receive a reply. Possible causes
include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus
security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the
network connection was broken.’ Then:

clc:~ $ tracker-status
Tracker daemon's status is Ë.

This is the same as what anubhavrakshit wrote on 2007-10-12.

[Bug 104673] Re: drm lockups on g965 hardware

2007-10-24 Thread Peter Cordes
Peter, now that the 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon release of Ubuntu is out, we
were wondering if you can still reproduce this issue.

I haven't tried, since I'm still using the latest git mesa and drm
(kernel and userspace).

Next time I'm planning to reboot anyway, I'll try to remember to switch
back to the shipped kernel drm modules, and all that.

Brian fixed in Gutsy
I don't think that thread sheds any light on this. g965 usually worked even
in Feisty, but some GL apps triggered bugs.

Peter F lockups with gm965
If you haven't tried using the latest git drm and mesa, you might want to try.
I'll attach a script I use to run git-pull, compile and install drm and mesa.
Run it from a directory where you have a drm and a mesa directory, from
doing a
git-clone something://whatever
You'll need kernel headers, e.g. linux-headers-[versionnumber]-generic
There's some good info on freedesktop.org about building things from git.

I hope that's enough info to get you started.

Ubuntu-desktop and kubuntu-desktop recommends this package, so this
should be recommended by xubuntu-desktop too.

Yeah... been looking, but it doesn't seem to be doing bad things in any
obvious way.

I'll keep digging.

[Bug 115283] Re: random system freeze when desktop-effects activated with X300 (X600 and X700 too?)

2007-10-24 Thread dsobiera
Scratch my above statement. All was fine for about a day. I logged in
today (still w/ animations plugin disabled) and my display froze up as
described in this ticket (mouse worked but I couldn't click
anythingkeyboard was unresponsive) shortly after I started working.

I disabled effects as this is my work machine. For what it is worth, I
had compiz-fusion manually installed on Feisty for several months
without a single incident on the same workstation.
