[Bug 96693] Re: poor performance hard disk IDE

2007-10-30 Thread uqbar
Someone will fix somewhere in the future.
The problem is here since months now and has not been fixed in Gutsy either.
I'm actually thinking to move to another distro just for this. Not the bug, the
carelessness.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd focus resources in kernel issues like this one rather
than,say, 3D desktop effects.

Re: [Bug 144175] Re: tilda stays like a gray window

2007-10-30 Thread Mantas Zimnickas
I installed this .deb via gdebi. After first run I got this:

tilda: error while loading shared libraries: libconfuse.so.0: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory

After installing libconfuse0:

sudo apt-get install libconfuse0

Tilda started to work and it seems, that Tilda doesn't crashes as before, but
still doesn't work. I see blinking cursor at the very top left corner of Tilda's
window, but I can't enter any thing. When I starting to type, cursor stops
blinking, but entered letters doesn't appears. So at this point Tilda is
unusable...

I fix that by setting „Run custom command instead of shell“ to my shell.

Also, „Always on Top“ doesn't work correctly too. Currently I use compiz, so it
is possible that „Always on Top“ problem is related to compiz. When I press a
key to show up Tilda window, it pulls down below currently active window, but if
I click on Tilda window with mouse, then it stays on top as needed...

Any way, at least Tilda started to work! :) Hope those bugs soon disappears too.

[Bug 158949] Windows and panel objects are not moved the same way

2007-10-30 Thread l0b0
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Background: I've got a 1-line, 4-column panel setup, running compiz, on
Gutsy.

How to reproduce:
- Open a new window.
- Move the window so that part of it is outside the right edge of the desktop.
- right-click the window handle or panel object (still in workspace 1), and
click "Move to Workspace Right".

Now, the window is moved one workspace right, but the panel object (that
is, the thing at the bottom of the screen) is moved /two/ panels to the
right.

I'll test this without compiz later.

[Bug 119308] Re: Gutsy shutdown doesn't

2007-10-30 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Not sure this is the same bug but :

Recent desktop system (AMD Sempron, NVidia chipset) which was shutting
down perfectly with Feisty now sporadically hangs on shutdown after
upgrade to Gutsy (kernel 2.6.22-14-generic).

Not easy for me to be very specific, the machine is 400 miles away, it's
a friend's machine which I administer from remote using SSH and of
course I have no access to it when hanged on shutdown... According to
the reports I got from her, machine stays forever on shutdown splash
screen and nothing else happens. I have remotely deactivated the splash
screen in grub's menu.lst to see if it can help or check last system
messages from now on.

Syslog doesn't show anything special after such a hang.

She reported to me having had some filesystem errors reported at mount
time after a forced reboot in such situation, so that's possible that
hanging happens before the system is actually completely down.

Machine uses the NVIdia proprietary X11 driver as well as ndiswrapper +
sis163u driver for a Wi-Fi USB thing and I was suspecting one of them to
be the cause of the issue - I've seen that losing the Wi-Fi connection
sometimes hangs the system in Gutsy where it wouldn't happen in Feisty,
although the "Windows" driver used by ndiswrapper is the same, so I was
suspecting something weird could happen when shutting down networking.

2007-10-30 Thread nathanlanham
I have a toshiba p-105-S6187 with BIOS 3.30 running kernel 2.6.22-14-generic.

Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)
and i didnt find it just now but i remember seeing it that is was the conexant

Im pretty new at all this stuff but have a couple questions
Im in Ukraine right now and finally got my conexant modem working but
everything i do to try to fix the sound until now ( i now know these fixes wont
work, like installing linux backports and thing like that) make my modem not
work. I get a "modem or device busy" when dialing with kppp, gppp and wvdial. i
dont know why im telling this but it might be useful or something :) And i
guess since i bought my driver from linuxant i need to stay with this kernel
right? (or ill have to buy another)

I have been reading a lot about this and the mandriva path fix confuses mei
guess i just dont understand??
I really hate to ask a lot of questions here but i have tried on
ubuntuforums.org and have not got any good answers.
Another thing is that i have the error code when i first boot about the
PCI...cannot allocate blah blah blah.is this part of the problem? im just
confused :)

I am really sorry for interrupting you guys with stupid questions but i
really want to get this fixed and if i can do anything to help please
let me know. if you dont want to answer my questions here please email
me [EMAIL PROTECTED]

also im in for 50 USD to the person who gets the fix :)

[Bug 158944] Upgrade tool (7.04 to 7.10) sets login keyboard layout to QWERTY US

2007-10-30 Thread oz
Public bug reported:

An upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10 sets the keyboard layout of the login
screen to QWERTY US.

Users with passwords containing keys that are different in this layout
will not be able to log in.

Example: A QWERTZ DE user with a Z in his password will need to type Y instead
at the login screen. But he does not know that.
Even if one account can login, it seems not possible to switch the login
screens config without manually editing config files.
Changing passwords of the accounts will only help, if users know the login
layout and its differences to the one they get after the login and choose the
keys wisely...

I cannot provide you with files, because the users wanted me to erase
the whole system, install 7.10, recreate their accounts and restore
their home directories from the backups.

This workaround has solved the problem for me, but will not for people
without backups... and I know there are some out there.

Maybe one should file a feature request for a "back me up now!" nag
screen.

[Bug 156540] Re: High pitch whine on left audio channel with Asus K8N-VM

2007-10-30 Thread James King
I've found a workaround for this issue:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-4291307.html?sid=2d09aabef90429f5465f9ee35f12456e#4291307

Specifically, setting the playback mode under System->Preferences->Sound
to "ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture" instead of "AD198x Analog"
and creating setting up /etc/asound.conf as follows:

pcm.upmix_4ch {
   type plug
   slave.pcm surround40
   slave.channels 4
   route_policy duplicate
}

pcm.default upmix_4ch

Unfortunately, this has the side effect of restricting me to a single
application using audio at any given time, but will have to do until
ALSA bug #2889 is fixed.

[Bug 132473] Re: [gutsy] network-manager i have to manually configure wpa/2 enterprise every time to connect

2007-10-30 Thread muhammedc
I can confirm this behaviour.

I connect daily to a WPA [EAP-TLS] wifi network. In Feisty, this worked
fine without problem. The password for the certificate file was being
successfully read from gnome-keyring. Now, after upgrade (and I have
replicated this problem on a clean install as well) to Gusty, it does
not seem to read the password from gnome-keyring. The workaround is to
click on "Connect to other wireless Network" and manually configure all
settings again. The problem with this however is its time consuming and
a pain in the @$$. Lets hope a fix comes in rather quickly...

[Bug 71024] Re: ulimit / pam limits don't work

2007-10-30 Thread Kees Cook
I can reproduce this for "-m", but not "-v" under Feisty or Gutsy. The
example code above segfaulted when I used it, so I wrote a slightly
smaller version (attached). Here is what I see:

$ ulimit -a | grep mem
max locked memory (kbytes, -l) 32
max memory size (kbytes, -m) unlimited
virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited
$ ./toomuch 102500
allocating...
using...
done!
$ ulimit -v 102400
$ ulimit -a | grep mem
max locked memory (kbytes, -l) 32
max memory size (kbytes, -m) unlimited
virtual memory (kbytes, -v) 102400
$ ./toomuch 102500
allocating...
malloc: Cannot allocate memory

Setting -m to 5 and re-running toomuch as above, I could verify in
"top" that it was reporting 100M of RSS usage.

[Bug 158935] 'Show Menubar" choice isn't remembered

2007-10-30 Thread Fnyar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

Under Ubuntu 7.10 the gnome-terminal application will always show the
menu bar after it is relaunched, even when it is turned off. This
behavior can be repeated by:

1. launching gnome-terminal
2. Right click -> Show Menubar (uncheck this)

The menu bar should go away as expected. Now:

3. Close gnome-terminal
4. Re-open gnome-terminal

You should see the menu bar again, NOT as expected.

[Bug 157600] Re: Erratic sound availability

2007-10-30 Thread Stanley Sokolow
I have similar problem of erratic sound. After some bootloads the
system correctly plays sound at login and in applications (Firefox with
Flash plugin playing a streaming video from web site); other times sound
does not play. Seems to be random. Onboard sound is SiS SI7012. It
is disabled in the BIOS setup. PCI sound card is C-Media PCI IEC958. I
setup the sound preferences to use the C-Media PCI card. I'll play with
it some more to see if the wrong sound chip is detected and set as the
active sound device. Maybe Ubuntu can detect the "inactivated" sound
chip because it disregards the BIOS and can find the sound device on
motherboard by probing even though onboard chip is set as inactive in
BIOS. If that's what's happening, maybe this radomness is due to a
race condition where one or the other chip is detected first, depending
upon random fluctuations of some hardware device.

English, since this is the language understood by the majority of Ubuntu
developers. Additionally, please only mark a bug as "security" if it
shows evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries or to
directly cause loss of data/privacy. Please feel free to report any

[Bug 158934] OpenGL not rendered on Xinerama second screen

2007-10-30 Thread Greg Fawcett
Public bug reported:

I have the release version of Gutsy running on a Dell Inspiron 6400 with
1280x800 main screen, and an Acer AL707 1280x1024 secondary screen.

I found I was logged out after a period of inactivity, which turned out
to be when the screensaver kicked in. I could stop this occurring by
either disabling the second screen in "Screens and Graphics" or by
choosing a non-OpenGL screensaver like Braid. After each crash,
Xorg.0.log.old contained this at the end:

Further investigation showed that OpenGL applications are not rendered
on the second monitor, and I imagine this will be the source of the
screensaver crash. I run glxgears and see the gears on the main screens,
but when I drag it onto the secondary screen the window is black - the
gears are not rendered.

2007-10-30 Thread Dan Kortschak
Here are four screen shots - one before issue is seen and three
different outcomes from not cleaning up.

You can see stray pixels between the Bluetooth icon and the tab of the
notification area. Sometime these stray pixels appear between the
Bluetooth icon and the NM Applet icon - it depends on how they have been
placed by the Notification Area applet.

[Bug 158932] Suspend/Resume broken for TravelMate 292LCi on gutsy

2007-10-30 Thread Hans Elfberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acpi

I just changed to gutsy on my Acer TravelMate 292LCi (BIOS v2.00
(latest)). It is a new installation, but i was using feisty on the same
hardware already.

Suspend/Resume used to work ok on this hardware, but sometimes i got a
notification message that there was a suspend problem. I also had to
restart the computer sometimes after resume because the network wouldn't
come back up properly again (and "sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart"
would not restore it).

After upgrading to gutsy, however, the computer won't even suspend any
more. The screen goes blank, then the fan goes up to full speed for a
while, but it never suspends completely. Then, when i reboot, my USB
keyboard will not work in grub. So i have to turn of the computer and
unplug the battery and AC adapter before i reconnect the power and
restart the computer.

I have discovered that the problem will be different if i kill skype
before i suspend the computer. If i do that, the computer will suspend
and resume. The problem is instead that the screen does not update
anymore. However, I can make the icons on my desktop visible if i move
the mouse over them.

Best regards,
Hans Elfberg

[Bug 158911] Re: there is no application border

2007-10-30 Thread Jamal Peter Le Blanc
I had a similar problem the other day when I loaded for my son a "Cat in
the Hat" CD under Ubuntu instead of Windows. Grey, like you, I first
pondered the hassle of reinstalling. But instead I noticed and error
message hinted that metacity wasn't running. Try:

sudo metacity

or

metacity

in a terminal. The borders were restored, no problem. Several boots
later everything still looks to be running fine.

Good luck,
Jamal

[Bug 158918] Installing mdadm package breaks bootup.

2007-10-30 Thread PaulSchulz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mdadm

On a freshly installed ubuntu-7.10-alternate, with latest apt-get
update.

When the 'mdadm' package is installed, the system fails to boot
successfully, and ends up at the initrd '(busybox)' prompt.

Hardware: DELL 1950 - 1RU Server
HDD: SAS

To get server booting again:
- Boot with ubuntu-7.10-alternate, and go through install steps up to
'partitioning'.
- ALT-F2 to start other shell
- 'fdisk -l' to see details of available drives.
- mkdir /mnt/disk
- mount -t ext3 /dev/sdb1 /mnt/disk
- cd /mnt/disk/boot
- mv initrd-.img initrd-.img-new
- cp initrd-.img.bak initrd-.img
- sync
- reboot

** Affects: mdadm (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 155291] Re: Netgear WG311v3 wifi card not detected

2007-10-30 Thread wibble
I found a solution on a wiki page that managed to fix the problem by
following (sort of) the guide here
(http://www.jimbo7.com/wiki/index.php?title=WG311v3_LINUX_WIKI) after a
fresh install of Gutsy.

The differences between the procedure I took and in the instructions were:
1. I used Synaptic to download & install the "ndiswrapper-common" and
"ndiswrapper-utils" instead of "module-assistant"
2. I stopped at the end of the "Set ndiswrapper to load on startup" section
(i.e. I didn't do the" WPA-PSK with wpa_supplicant" or further sections)

After that I was able to use the Network Manager to connect to wireless
networks normally.

[Bug 40866] Re: [dapper] Cannot use the 'Super_L' key for shortcuts

2007-10-30 Thread Keith Hughitt
Workaround: While compiz is running, load the Compiz settings manager,
ccsm. Go to "general options" -> "actions," and double-click the name of
the command you want to change, and manually enter the shortcut (e.g.
d). Gnome keyboard shortcuts will still however list whatever
shortcut was used before. Moreover, after setting the shortcut in ccsm,
the shortcut will still work even after switching to metacity (although
the gnome keyboard shortcut will still display the incorrect binding
from before).

2007-10-30 Thread ouellettesr
I have no problems on Ubuntu Gutsy with the FREE Vmware-Server 1.04
using the latest any-any update.

What happens for me is the install script quits halfway through, you
apply the any-any update below and it will restart the install script
for you and finish the installation.

Works Perfect Everytime.
