[Bug 159208] releases mirror strongly prefers apache
Public bug reported: I'm trying to create a mirror of ubuntu archive and releases. Catalog 'releases' contains iso images of ubuntu releases. Also, it contains HEADER.html, FOOTER.html and .htaccess files, which are used by Apache web server to build pretty indexes of catalogs. But, we'd like to setup our mirror using lighttpd because we think it better suits a task of serving static content. We could create such prettry indexes ourselves using provided HEADER.html, but the tree is rsynced regularly so it will be removed on every update. May be static index.html in releases folder would be a better way, allowing different mirrors use different web-servers? ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- releases mirror strongly prefers apache https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/159208 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 129910] Re: tty[1-6] are active but display nothing in Gutsy
Sridhar Dhanapalan wrote: The solution outlined in fanatic's last post has made my console visible. I didn't have to use any vga settings in grub. I should add that this has seemingly messed up my bootsplash. It is now of a lower resolution, and is offset to the right to the point where half of it is on the right edge of the screen and the rest is wrapped around onto the left. I've experimented with a few different resolutions in /etc/usplash.conf but there's been no change. Correcting these comments, I _was_ using a vga= parameter in grub (I didn't notice it before), and the usplash problem was fixed by setting usplash.conf to 1024x768. So the solution for me was to load the fbcon, vesafb and vga16fb modules into the initramfs and remove their blacklisting. -- tty[1-6] are active but display nothing in Gutsy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/129910 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 159215] incremental updates
Public bug reported: I noticed that most of the times when I started adept_manager, it told me that many new versions (1 Gigabyte!) were available. However, the updates were really tiny, not even a minor release (e. g. 1.4.0_ubuntu2 instead of 1.4.0_ubuntu1) so it would be much to download to get really few things. [Bug 119412] Re: [needs-packaging] mac
My 2-cent contribution. After a long thought, I believe it shoud be included in multiverse, perhaps depending from a meta-package like media-codec-ugly- multiverse, in a similar way as the gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly- multiverse is done. We should consider that .ape format is quite popular, and supply the package as a migration tool to the flac format and clearly deprecate its usage as an audio compressor. Of course, I feel uncomfortable with the custom so-called opensource licence, but it's up to the author to decide about it. As he never asked to remove or stop the mac-port project, I think he can bear with it, so I see no direct copyright infringiment. Should distribution become more and more questionable on author's requests, we could always remove it even from the multiverse repository, which hosts software for which is user's responsibility to check whether he has the right to use the software or not. -- [needs-packaging] mac https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/119412 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share
What should happen: 1. A majority of the PCs for sale should include only free software like Ubuntu. Why? People are happy to pay for the complete bundle including Windows. If people weren't happy to pay extra for commercial software, they would complain. The only people I hear complaining are Linux geeks. 2. Ubuntu should be marketed in a way such that its amazing features and benefits would be apparent and known by all. So, who's going to fund that? And what are these amazing benefits and features anyway? Myself and my 5 colleagues have been using Ubuntu for 3 months now for Java Development and every single morning we each waste between 10 and 30 minutes trying to get the damn thing connected to our WPA2-protected wireless network instead of the unsecured wireless network on the floor below that belongs to a different company which Ubuntu seems to connect to by default. What's the benefit of automatically connecting to the first unsecured wireless network you find? I see that as a major security flaw and, in the UK where it is a criminal offence to connect to a wireless network without prior permission (see articles on BBC News website about this), it lays Ubuntu users wide open to allegations of stealing network access. So Ubuntu fails before I've even managed to get any work done. And why does everything run so slowly? Firefox takes nearly a full minute to load on a laptop with an Intel 1.66GHz Core Duo and 2GB RAM. 3. The system shall become more and more user friendly as time passes. Quite. But at the moment, this is still an operating system for Unix nerds. I've used Windows, Linux, Solaris and OS X as desktop operating systems and I don't really see any as being significantly better or more secure than any other. So far, Windows and OS X come way out top for usability and interoperability while Linux trails far behind with Solaris. -- Microsoft has a majority market share https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 156058] Re: Upgrade to Gutsy doesn't add initrd line to grub menu.lst - missing postinst_hook
I was mistaken yesterday evening about my 2nd machine. Found the good one now ;-) The 2nd machine has : do_symlinks = yes relative_links = yes do_bootloader = no do_bootfloppy = no do_initrd = yes link_in_boot = no ...Just like Kemotaha's This one was a fresh install of Ubuntu feisty upgraded to Gusty final using Ubuntu's upgrade tool. So a machine upgraded with Ubuntu's tool and another upgraded with Kubuntu's adept_manager showed the same behaviour. This machine also has a rootfs that resides on EVMS which needed the grub install to be finished manually at first Ubuntu install, as the install script wasn't able to figure out by itself the correct /boot, rootFS and destination disk setup. Would be interesting to find out whether other people reporting that the Gutsy upgrade didn't create the initrd grub entry had had trouble installing grub during their first Ubuntu installation, or if their rootFS or /boot has a setup more complex than a basic HD partition... Should I assume that I should now add the 2 missing lines in kernel- img.conf on both machines ? -- Upgrade to Gutsy doesn't add initrd line to grub menu.lst - missing postinst_hook https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/156058 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 135736] Re: Serious performance regression from recent update from 2.0.1 to 3.0
It is a real shame that ubuntu is released with an 3.x alpha version of python-opengl. It does not only contain many bugs, it is also incompatible with previous versions. Programs that run fine with the stable 2.x releases of python-opengl, are not guaranteed to work. Please read the release notes: 3.0.0a6: http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=486765group_id=5988 3.0.0a5: http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=465796group_id=5988 3.0.0a4: http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=455848group_id=5988 A quote from these release notes: This is still a rather early alpha. We're missing big tracts of functionality, such as the AGL and WGL libraries (we do have raw XGL support). There is lots of work still to be done and we would love to see your patches to get your favourite bit of the package working. Bug reports, reports of success/failure and the like are also useful. We haven't even begun to optimise the code, btw, so expect it to be very slow. --- I am currently preparing a release of a program that uses python-opengl, but a lot of the visualization has become completely trashed with python-opengl-3.0.0a6, due to incompatibilities with the previous version and bugs. [Bug 156058] Re: Upgrade to Gutsy doesn't add initrd line to grub menu.lst - missing postinst_hook
It is the installation of grub that should insert the postinst_hook for grub. If you install grub manually, you must make sure you also do this. Did you follow a HowTo? The grub package itself can not do this AFAIK, since theoretically the grub package can be installed while not being used for booting. I guess the grub-installer takes care of this during a normal installation. Yes, you can add the 2 missing lines. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evince I use evince a lot for viewing .cbr files (comics) and there is a feature I would like it to have: since .cbr files are just common .rar files with a different name, they can contain different folders with -for example- a different issue each. [Bug 159236] If ntfs write support is unavailable, offer to mount read only
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-mount I plugged a USB harddrive into my PC that was formatted NTFS. I only wanted to read some files from it. When double clicking on the icon in the computer, I was told that reading it required ntfs-3g support, which was not available for my platform (IIRC). However by executing pmount /dev/sdc1 on the command line, the device was mounted. All the icons in gnome worked fine. In the computer, the device looked like it was mounted. I was able to read all the files I wanted on that drive. I had to unmount it with pumount /dev/sdc1 When read/write support is unavailable, gnome should offer to mount the device read only. This should allow people to get the most use out of their devices. ** Affects: gnome-mount (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- If ntfs write support is unavailable, offer to mount read only https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/159236 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
