[Bug 159208] releases mirror strongly prefers apache

2007-11-01 Thread Timur Irmatov
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to create a mirror of ubuntu archive and releases.

Catalog 'releases' contains iso images of ubuntu releases. Also, it
contains HEADER.html, FOOTER.html and .htaccess files, which are used by
Apache web server to build pretty indexes of catalogs. But, we'd like to
setup our mirror using lighttpd because we think it better suits a task
of serving static content.

We could create such prettry indexes ourselves using provided
HEADER.html, but the tree is rsynced regularly so it will be removed on
every update.

May be static index.html in releases folder would be a better way,
allowing different mirrors use different web-servers?

Subject: [Bug 72111] Re: regression 2.6.17-10-generic

 Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
 Ubuntu better. We are currently reviewing bug reports regarding
 older kernels. After review we feel this bug does not meet the
 criteria for a stable release update and are marking this as Won't
 Fix. For more information regarding stable release updates, please
 refer to: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .

 However, now that the 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon release of Ubuntu is out, we
 were wondering if you can still reproduce this issue. Could you please
 download and try the new version of Ubuntu from
 http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download and report back your
 results? If the issue is still present in the new release, please
 attach the following information:

 * uname -a  uname-a.log
 * cat /proc/version_signature  version.log
 * dmesg  dmesg.log
 * sudo lspci -vvnn  lspci-vvnn.log

 Please be sure to attach each file as a separate attachment. For
 more information regarding the kernel team bug policy, please refer
 to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies .  I have
 subscribed myself to this bug report. If you do notice an issue
 please set the status of this report back to Incomplete and I will
 be notified accordingly. Thanks again and we appreciate your help
 and feedback.

[Bug 42600] Re: Microphone does not work on Dell Inspiron 630m

2007-11-01 Thread efreddi
I have a FS Amilo Pi 1556 and I found no way to bring to life the internal mic
nor an external one. It simply doesn't work with no software in Gutsy.
By the way, the installation went find and the only hint of some problem I
found is a string in dmesg where it says that there is some timeout and then
it's necessary to go to polling mode.
Playback instead is ok.

[Bug 129910] Re: tty[1-6] are active but display nothing in Gutsy

2007-11-01 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan
Sridhar Dhanapalan wrote:
 The solution outlined in fanatic's last post has made my console visible.
 I didn't have to use any vga settings in grub.

 I should add that this has seemingly messed up my bootsplash. It is
 now of a lower resolution, and is offset to the right to the point where
 half of it is on the right edge of the screen and the rest is wrapped
 around onto the left. I've experimented with a few different resolutions
 in /etc/usplash.conf but there's been no change.

Correcting these comments, I _was_ using a vga= parameter in grub (I
didn't notice it before), and the usplash problem was fixed by setting
usplash.conf to 1024x768.

So the solution for me was to load the fbcon, vesafb and vga16fb modules
into the initramfs and remove their blacklisting.

[Bug 159215] incremental updates

2007-11-01 Thread PolitikerNEU
Public bug reported:

I noticed that most of the times when I started adept_manager, it told
me that many new versions (1 Gigabyte!) were available. However, the
updates were really tiny, not even a minor release (e. g. 1.4.0_ubuntu2
instead of 1.4.0_ubuntu1) so it would be much to download to get really
few things.

So my wish is that the ubuntu server stores diff-rpms for the updates of
the last week (i. e.) and the last two versions so that people do not
have so much data to transfer.

[Bug 148003] Re: mounting Luks encrypted USB-HDD does not work reliably

2007-11-01 Thread Peter Wainwright
Stefan,
I think having two UUIDs is OK; as far as I know, the system should regard the
encrypted volume and the plaintext volume as separate objects (they correspond
to different devices, linked by the device mapper).
My experience with Feisty was better than yours - this stuff worked OK for me
until I upgraded to Gutsy.

[Bug 119412] Re: [needs-packaging] mac

2007-11-01 Thread Cesare Falco
My 2-cent contribution.

After a long thought, I believe it shoud be included in multiverse,
perhaps depending from a meta-package like media-codec-ugly-
multiverse, in a similar way as the gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-
multiverse is done. We should consider that .ape format is quite
popular, and supply the package as a migration tool to the flac format
and clearly deprecate its usage as an audio compressor.

Of course, I feel uncomfortable with the custom so-called opensource
licence, but it's up to the author to decide about it. As he never asked
to remove or stop the mac-port project, I think he can bear with it, so
I see no direct copyright infringiment.

Should distribution become more and more questionable on author's
requests, we could always remove it even from the multiverse repository,
which hosts software for which is user's responsibility to check whether
he has the right to use the software or not.

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2007-11-01 Thread HappySpaceInvader
  What should happen:
1. A majority of the PCs for sale should include only free software like
Ubuntu.

Why? People are happy to pay for the complete bundle including Windows.
If people weren't happy to pay extra for commercial software, they would
complain. The only people I hear complaining are Linux geeks.

2. Ubuntu should be marketed in a way such that its amazing
features and benefits would be apparent and known by all.

So, who's going to fund that? And what are these amazing benefits and
features anyway?

Myself and my 5 colleagues have been using Ubuntu for 3 months now for
Java Development and every single morning we each waste between 10 and
30 minutes trying to get the damn thing connected to our WPA2-protected
wireless network instead of the unsecured wireless network on the floor
below that belongs to a different company which Ubuntu seems to connect
to by default. What's the benefit of automatically connecting to the
first unsecured wireless network you find? I see that as a major
security flaw and, in the UK where it is a criminal offence to connect
to a wireless network without prior permission (see articles on BBC News
website about this), it lays Ubuntu users wide open to allegations of
stealing network access. So Ubuntu fails before I've even managed to
get any work done.

And why does everything run so slowly? Firefox takes nearly a full
minute to load on a laptop with an Intel 1.66GHz Core Duo and 2GB RAM.

3. The system shall become more and more user friendly as time
passes.

Quite. But at the moment, this is still an operating system for Unix
nerds. I've used Windows, Linux, Solaris and OS X as desktop operating
systems and I don't really see any as being significantly better or more
secure than any other. So far, Windows and OS X come way out top for
usability and interoperability while Linux trails far behind with
Solaris.

[Bug 123623] Re: gnome-hearts failure

2007-11-01 Thread Sarah Hobbs
gnome-hearts (0.2-1ubuntu1) hardy; urgency=low

  * Merge from debian unstable, remaining changes:
- Dropped ubuntu patch, fixed upstream
- Dropped 01_gnome_cards_data.patch, as we take our gnome from upstream,
  not from debian.  (LP: #123623)

gnome-hearts (0.2-1) unstable; urgency=low

  [ Sander Marechal ]
  * New upstream release. Closes: #425670, #420861.
- Big rewrite of the C code
- Uses Python instead of Lua for AI scripts
- Many bugfixes and translation updates
  * Dependency on Lua replaced with Python
  * Recreated 01_gnome_cards_data.patch for the new upstream source

  [ Josselin Mouette ]
  * 02_fix_pythondir.patch: install the private python modules in a
private directory.
  * Call dh_pysupport; build-depend on python-support 0.4.
  * Don't hardcode the 2.4 version of python.
  * 03_shared_link.patch: link to python dynamically.
  * 01_gnome_cards_data.patch:
+ Fix the path to the cards in gnome-cards-data.
+ Don't remove the picture, it's useless to do it in the patch.

gnome-hearts (0.1.3-4) unstable; urgency=low

  * 01_gnome_cards_data.patch: use the new path for cards.
  * Depend on gnome-cards-data 2.20.

[Bug 149214] Re: [Gutsy] Intel 4965AGN wireless connection dies

2007-11-01 Thread elex75
I can confirm this issue.
My Hardware: Asus F3SV with Intel 4965AGN

My existing connection after the boot process dies after a short time
(approx. 2-10sec)

The following excerpt from the kernel-log file:

kernel: [ 128.772000] iwl4965: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting
0x200.
kernel: [  128.772000] iwl4965: Error setting new configuration (-5).

A command (sudo rmmod iwl4965 sudo modprobe iwl4965) was only a
temporary solution, the problem occurs again.

thx

[Bug 59560] Re: [gutsy dapper edgy feisty] Kmid - NO sound comes out

2007-11-01 Thread liquidalien
This is no problem ! Kmid is only a .mid/.kar reader : It is not design
to produce any sound but to transmit midi events to software or
hardware synth using alsa-senquencer capabilities.

You need to plug a hardware or software synthesizer to hear any sound.
The synth have to be General Midi (like fluidsynth..).

So a small tuto :

1. Install fluidsynth, jackd, qtjackctl...
2. Launch qjackctl, press play
3. Launch fluidsynth and load a General Midi soundfont
4. Launch kmid and choose the fluidsynth midi device
5. Load a midifile in kmid and enjoy.

[Bug 156058] Re: Upgrade to Gutsy doesn't add initrd line to grub menu.lst - missing postinst_hook

2007-11-01 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
I was mistaken yesterday evening about my 2nd machine. Found the good
one now ;-)

The 2nd machine has :

do_symlinks = yes
relative_links = yes
do_bootloader = no
do_bootfloppy = no
do_initrd = yes
link_in_boot = no

...Just like Kemotaha's

This one was a fresh install of Ubuntu feisty upgraded to Gusty final
using Ubuntu's upgrade tool. So a machine upgraded with Ubuntu's tool
and another upgraded with Kubuntu's adept_manager showed the same
behaviour.

This machine also has a rootfs that resides on EVMS which needed the
grub install to be finished manually at first Ubuntu install, as the
install script wasn't able to figure out by itself the correct /boot,
rootFS and destination disk setup.

Would be interesting to find out whether other people reporting that the
Gutsy upgrade didn't create the initrd grub entry had had trouble
installing grub during their first Ubuntu installation, or if their
rootFS or /boot has a setup more complex than a basic HD partition...

Should I assume that I should now add the 2 missing lines in kernel-
img.conf on both machines ?

[Bug 135736] Re: Serious performance regression from recent update from 2.0.1 to 3.0

2007-11-01 Thread Toon Verstraelen
It is a real shame that ubuntu is released with an 3.x alpha version of
python-opengl. It does not only contain many bugs, it is also
incompatible with previous versions. Programs that run fine with the
stable 2.x releases of python-opengl, are not guaranteed to work. Please
read the release notes:

3.0.0a6:
http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=486765group_id=5988
3.0.0a5:
http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=465796group_id=5988
3.0.0a4:
http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=455848group_id=5988

A quote from these release notes:

This is still a rather early alpha. We're missing big
tracts of functionality, such as the AGL and WGL libraries
(we do have raw XGL support). There is lots of work still
to be done and we would love to see your patches to get your
 favourite bit of the package working. Bug reports, reports
 of success/failure and the like are also useful. We
haven't even begun to optimise the code, btw, so expect it
to be very slow.
---

I am currently preparing a release of a program that uses python-opengl,
but a lot of the visualization has become completely trashed with
python-opengl-3.0.0a6, due to incompatibilities with the previous
version and bugs. This makes it impossible to release my software for
ubuntu users. That's a real shame.

[Bug 156058] Re: Upgrade to Gutsy doesn't add initrd line to grub menu.lst - missing postinst_hook

2007-11-01 Thread Tormod Volden
It is the installation of grub that should insert the postinst_hook for
grub. If you install grub manually, you must make sure you also do this.
Did you follow a HowTo?

The grub package itself can not do this AFAIK, since theoretically the
grub package can be installed while not being used for booting. I guess
the grub-installer takes care of this during a normal installation.

Yes, you can add the 2 missing lines. If you rely on grub for booting,
and you don't have a particular set-up where menu.lst must be maintained
by hand because update-grub does the wrong thing, you should have them.

[Bug 159222] use different folders inside .cbr as an index

2007-11-01 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

I use evince a lot for viewing .cbr files (comics) and there is a
feature I would like it to have: since .cbr files are just common .rar
files with a different name, they can contain different folders with
-for example- a different issue each.

Would it be possible for evince to use this information to generate
index information? I mean, if a .cbr contains 3 folders for issues 1, 2
and 3 of a collection, could the evince index sidebar show an entry for
the first page (cover) in each?

That way I could keep entire collections in a single file, and still be
able to easily navigate them.

[Bug 159224] allow deleting individual images in .cbr files

Binary package hint: openoffice.org2

Latin fonts are matched by the msttcorefonts package and the new RedHat
Liberation Fonts ( Bug #113889 ), however CJK users are restricted
without metric equivalent replacements for the following fonts:

Korean:  Batang, Gulim

Japanese:  MS Gothic, Kochi Mincho

Chinese Simplified:  SimHei, SimSun

Chinese Traditional:  Ming LiU

Documents in OpenOffice will not render the same layout on Windows and
Ubuntu without these installed.

[Bug 17216] Re: Hard drive spindown should be configurable

2007-11-01 Thread Guy Van Sanden
Marki and Guy, thank you very much for all of the info.

I am in the middle of a research project and really do not have time to
look into all of this stuff (more than I already have), so I REALLY
appreciate the help.

No prob. Check if laptop mode is enabled (it most likely is not, unless
you enabled it yourself). If it is not enabled, the settings you see
with smartmontools are the default for your machine.

I saw a lot of reports about Thinkpads being affected, so most likely,
they have bad defaults while most HP's seem to be fine.

[Bug 159236] If ntfs write support is unavailable, offer to mount read only

2007-11-01 Thread Rory McCann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-mount

I plugged a USB harddrive into my PC that was formatted NTFS. I only
wanted to read some files from it. When double clicking on the icon in
the computer, I was told that reading it required ntfs-3g support, which
was not available for my platform (IIRC). However by executing pmount
/dev/sdc1 on the command line, the device was mounted. All the icons in
gnome worked fine. In the computer, the device looked like it was
mounted. I was able to read all the files I wanted on that drive. I had
to unmount it with pumount /dev/sdc1

When read/write support is unavailable, gnome should offer to mount the
device read only. This should allow people to get the most use out of
their devices.
