[Bug 137903] Re: Total system freeze when watch video only

2007-11-08 Thread Asraniel
i would like to add that this bug has nothing todo with mplayer (since i'm not
using it) and it only arised since i'm using kubuntu 7.10. it was not here when
using 7.04.
Should i open a new bug or could it be the same. It looks to me like it is the
same. which would mean it is not the fault of the tv player application but a
kernel bug.

[Bug 137903] Re: Total system freeze when watch video only

2007-11-08 Thread Asraniel
i have a similar or the same bug.

I watch tv on two different computers. Same problem on both.
One tv has a pinnacle pctv, a nvidia graphic card and runs kdetv as a player.
The other has a wintv usb tv card, a intel graphic card and runs xawtv.

But have the same problem, when watching tv, there are random total freezes of
the system, after a random amount of time.
On the pinnacle pctv computer they happen every few hours. On the wintv one
they happend 3 times in 1 and a half hour.

There is no logfile that indicates a problem. The keyboard simplay
starts to blink and the computer does not react anymore. The sound
continues to play

[Bug 160957] Re: Gimp menu does not conform to Debian policy

2007-11-08 Thread Cyril Soldani
I tested your translation method and it works well on my systems
(gusty), thanks.

It would be nice to have something like this enabled by default in the
menu package to allow for easy transition. We cannot hope having all
packages conforming to the same menu structure any time soon.

Although I prefer the new menu structure and I support your translation
which is looking forward, it is a bit confusing. Package maintainers
referring to current debian policy (3.7.2.2, /usr/share/doc/debian-
policy/menu-policy.txt.gz) will continue to use the old structure while
seeing their package appearing at other places in the menu. This can be
confusing. It is not critical as the menu will remain coherent (thanks
to translations), but it could slow down adoption of the new menu
structure.

Possible solutions are :
- upgrade to a newer debian policy including the new structure (if it exists)
- add a special notice for menu transition in /usr/share/doc/debian-policy
- rewrite the translations the other way round (e.g. from "Applications" to
"Apps"). Users of the new
structure are more likely to be aware of the translation for transition
purpose. This one would solve
the confusion problem, but would not help the transition to the new menu
structure, so I
  personnaly prefer Cesare's solution.

[Bug 161126] Package name misleading

2007-11-08 Thread Inkwina
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ddrescue

ddrescue (provided in the package gddrescue) and dd_rescue are different pieces
of software.
The package name should reflect which of these applications is installed as the
current naming is confusing.

apt-get install ddrescue does not install ddrescue (from gddrescue) but
dd_rescue.

Even dd-rescue would be a better name.

Ideally dd_rhelp
(http://www.kalysto.org/utilities/dd_rhelp/index.en.html) should be
included with dd_rescue.

maybe ddrescue could be a virtual package which depends on gddrescue,
dd_rescue and dd_rhelp thus providing a variety of options for
attempting data recovery.

[Bug 157860] Re: ooimpress freezes when trying to open an existing file through the wizard

2007-11-08 Thread Leonardo Gastón De Luca
I changed the GTK theme from "Use my KDE style in GTK applications" to
"Qt" and the problem stopped. The funny thing is that I switched the GTK
theme bacl to what it was (to see if that was causing the problem) and I
couldn't reproduce the bug anymore. Very weird.

Maybe I changed something else in the meantime and that solved the
problem... I don't know. The good thing is that this doesn't seem to be
a real bug so it can probably be marked as invalid.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

[Bug 161124] network manager assumes wrong key after wireless is disconnected

2007-11-08 Thread shadesofevil
Public bug reported:

I live in an are where there are frequent power cuts. everytime the
power goes off, and my wireless AP is off, network manager eventually
discovers that there is no connection and tries to reconnect. however,
it doesn't seem to detect that the AP is no longer running, and tries to
reconnect to it anyway, finally assuming that the network key is wrong,
and asks me to enter the key.

this is a problem because network manager halts at the key prompt, and
stays that way. It does not auto reconnect to the network when it comes
back on.

2007-11-08 Thread Andreas Walser
Hi Pedro

It seems to be a good morning. I try to confirm this issues this morning
and I've to say that it works now. Let us hope that it will work also in
the future :-)

I'm happy, but I'm also confused about that. This because I didn't
update anything.

I wish you a successful day and all the best from a snowy and windy
Switzerland.
Andreas

Below the additional information about this bug
---
I noticed this issue by printing some openoffice documents (exported in
pdf). Printing directly from openoffice works, printing after export
fails.
Exporting the same file from openoffice as .ps with printing the .ps
afterwards will work fine. Using ps2pdf as convertion tool and printing
the pdf afterwards will fail again.

My friend has the ubuntu 7.10 32 bit installed and has no problem yet
with printing pdfs using evince.

[Bug 161107] Re: kmail forgets manually assigned shortcut keys

2007-11-08 Thread Ian Howson
Assigning the 'Mark message as Important' shortcut seems to work
correctly with Ctrl-I and Ctrl-J.

I can only reproduce the problem with 'Filter Classify as spam' and
'Filter Classify as not spam'.

I did some poking around and found that filters can have shortcuts
assigned to them. Assigning a shortcut here appears to override the one
set in Configure Shortcuts. It *is* remembered across kmail restarts.
This solves my problem, but the Configure Shortcuts dialog is confusing
in this respect. I've attached two screenshots to explain a little
better.

[Bug 59867] Re: Synaptics touchpad ceases functioning after suspend and resume.

2007-11-08 Thread sakolaas
"I have a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro V3205, with Ubuntu Gutsy (generic
kernel 2.6.22-14). Suspend works like a charm except this annoying
touchpad problem. I tried to modify the /etc/default/acpi-support

I have the same laptop, and found the solution some months ago:
Change to BIOS 1.10, that solves the suspend issue.

To clarify, I executed the above command first on an NTFS partition
mounted through /etc/fstab, UUID=C440F40940F40448. I then tried it on a
removable drive, UUID=381C49871C4940DC, /dev/sde1, after gnome-mount
failed to mount it.

[Bug 156396] Re: network manager using all of cpu

2007-11-08 Thread Håvard Gulldahl
I'm seeing the same thing, only my desktop system has not been asleep,
just inactive for some time.

The applet claims to be connected to a wlan with an ESSID of
'(unknown)'. There are no available networks in the network list, and
the cpu is spinning at 93%-99%. My network uses WPA2 authentication.

FWIW, I've seen the same error both on KDE (KNetworkManager -- upgraded
from Feisty) and Gnome (freshly installed).

Is there any way to provide something (e.g logs) that will help track
this down?

[Bug 161122] nm_applet prompts for password on startup

[Bug 161107] Re: kmail forgets manually assigned shortcut keys

2007-11-08 Thread Ace Suares
Could you supply the version of Ubuntu (cat /etc/issue) and the version
of kaddresbook (dpkg-query -W kaddressbook) ?

In my test, on Kubuntu Gutsy, with kmail 4:3.5.7enterprise20070926-0ubuntu2,
I have assigned 'Mark as Important' to Ctrl-I successfully, and kmail remembers
it (after closing, even rebooting). In my Settings->Configure Shortcuts, I
don't have an option for "Filter Classify as spam".
Could you try to assign 'Mark message as Important' to Ctrl-I and see if that
sticks ? If so, could you assign it to Ctrl-J and see if it sticks ?

[Bug 131646] Re: TVout is interfering with screen resolution on Intel graphics

2007-11-08 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

Can't select correct resolution and refresh rate is not recognized in Gusty
Tribe 4. This happens
on a Santa Rosa laptop with Intel GM965.
This works OK with Feisty on the same machine.
+
+
+ Impact: Causes improper resolution, refresh rates, and other resolution
issues for four intel graphics cards.
+
+ Solution: Applies several quirks from the new -intel driver that
+ upstream is now carrying.
+
+ Patch: http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10316259/xserver-xorg-video-
+ intel_2.1.1-0ubuntu10.debdiff
+
+ Steps to reproduce:
+ 1. Use a Samsung Q35, Panasonic Toughbook CF-Y7, Lenovo X60, Dell Latitude
X1, or AOpen 965GM mini pc.
+ 2. Attempt changing to each available resolution via xrandr
+ 3. Some or all resolutions will fail to work correctly, showing an issue as

[Bug 158313] Re: Email Address with é parsing error

2007-11-08 Thread Ace Suares
Hi,

I can not reproduce this bug with a Gmail account. When I press Reply,
the To; field correctly displays

"Acé Suares" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Could you open a Gmail account, edit the name of the account so that is
has an é in it, and then test if Kmail will still have this bug ? In
that case, we could probably be sure the error happens somewhere in the
middle (maybe Exchange).

Could you supply the version of Ubuntu (cat /etc/issue) and the version
of kmail (dpkg-query -W kmail), please ?

I used Gutsy with kmail 4:3.5.7enterprise20070926-0ubuntu2 for this
test.

[Bug 108056] Re: xserver-xorg-video-intel does not work with 82852/855GM

2007-11-08 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

  I've got a Thinkpad X40 with a “Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated
Graphics Device” the driver from xserver-xorg-video-i810 worked for me
all the time. Yesterday I discovered xserver-xorg-video-intel and
installed it. When I rebooted my laptop today. Starting X resulted in
very strange behavior. Most times it just froze with a black screen,
once pressing any key resulted in strange letters being printed on the
screen, sometimes it brought up a login screen, even though I use
autologin, logging in resulted in a frozen black screen.

After changing i810 in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to vesa I was able to log in
again. I uninstalled xserver-xorg-video-intel and reinstalled xserver-
xorg-video-i810 and changed vesa back to i810. Now everything is working

[Bug 156288] Re: create task from kmail creates a todo entry with missing attachment

Actually, rebooting is not needed, just close Kmail and open it again.

The attachment that is created before the closing, can be opened, after
closing and opening of kmail, it can not be opened anymore.

In the Calender file (probably
~/.kde/share/apps/korganizer/YourName.ics) you can see that the message
(before closing Kmail) is stored inside the calender file, like this:

[Bug 161118] copying files from vista share results in timeout

2007-11-08 Thread Kay.one
Public bug reported:

When trying to copy a big files from a vista share (samba), the process

[Bug 112518] Re: Switch User freezes at blank screen

2007-11-08 Thread Ds
I have the same: IBM T21 version 7.10. Each time I select stand-by, log off,
hibernate the screen goes black and that's it. I have to switch the computer of
and on again.
I am quite new to Ubuntu. Perhaps this might help for troubleshooting:
Before I used Ubuntu I used the Knoppix live CD. Screen went blank when system
booted. Workaround was to select fb 1024*768
I then installed Knoppix on the HDD, system started and shut down as per design

[Bug 133118] Re: very corrupt X after suspend/resume

2007-11-08 Thread Bryce Harrington

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I am running an updated gutsy install on a Thinkpad X40 (so i855GM graphics)
with the -intel driver. I enabled Desktop Effects last night and the two times
I have done a suspend/resume cycle since then, on resuming, is rendered
entirely corruptly.
X appears to still function, in that i can just about make out where windows
are and I can switch desktops and see the corrupt workspaces scroll.
Giving X the three finger salute makes it come back fine.
+
+ Impact: Affects laptop users with older intel 855 graphics when they
+ suspend/resume, leading to 3D textured surface corruption (corrupt X
+ graphics) on resume forcing the user to reboot (and lose any saved
+ work). Because of this, the bug is considered serious and deserving of
+ a backported fix for Gutsy.
+
+ Solution: The proposed patch adds a one-line fix to emit an invariant
+ state at the appropriate point, to make X not become corrupted. This
+ fix was uploaded to hardy about a week ago and testers report it
+ correctly eliminates the corruption.
+
+ Patch:
+
+ Steps to reproduce:
+ 1. On an intel 855gm graphics system, enable desktop effects
+ 2. Suspend
+ 3. Resume
+ 4. Screen graphics become garbled/corrupted (but system is still responsive,
just unusable)
+
+ Regression Potential: Low. It's a one-line change that merely modifies
+ what is allowed to be cached between state changes for older i830-class
+ hardware. The patch has been tested on various -intel chipsets by at
+ least half a dozen people without any regression seen. Some have
+ reported occasional crashes after resume, however this is believed to be
+ a separate bug not particular to i855, that this bug was simply hiding.

[Bug 152935] Re: Kmail forgets which mail I was looking at

2007-11-08 Thread Ace Suares
Thank you for your bug report!

I think that before you removed the unread mail, you had to select them.
Hence, the 'last read mail' was one of those unread messages. After you
removed them, and went back to 'Any Status', there is nowhere to go back
to since the 'last read message' was just removed.

I tried this on Gutsy and I think the above description could be
correct.

Please feel free to re-open this bug (by assigning the status 'new' to
it) if you feel that marking this bug as 'invalid' (which means 'Closed'
in this case) is not the right action.

[Bug 161115] Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-851S DVD-RAM doesn't always appear

Public bug reported:

I have a HP Pavilion dv6245us that uses a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-851S as
the dvd+-r/rw drive. Using the 2.6.22-14-generic kernel (gutsy), the CD-
ROM drive does not always appear in dmesg as valid hardware. Rebooting

[Bug 50039] Re: [Data Loss] KMail mysteriously changes messages to "No Subject", "Unknown" sender

2007-11-08 Thread Ace Suares

Just a question, did you try to stop kmail, remove the index files, and start
kmail again ?

I don't know if that will result in more loss, so be carefull (backup
first?).

I had a similar experience after kmail had crashed, sometimes.

I would then delete the files
.trash.index
.trash.index.ids
.trash.index.sorted
(for instance, every folder has its own index files)
and then restart kmail (took sometimes a long time depending on how many
messages needed to be indexed).
After that, all the messages where back to normal again.

I use maildir support in Kmail (which I think is the default) and
another way to check if the messages are still there is to look in the
folder (for instance trash) and then into the 'cur' directory and check
if there are files like

1194581272.6947.QLKNP
1194581272.6947.RmAPg
1194581274.6947.Hp1J9
1194581274.6947.IcNzr
1194581274.6947.jHCOz
1194581275.6947.a7ZSB

If they are zero-length, the messages are gone for sure. If not,
reindexing may help.

Regarding the reported problem with IMAP, I don't think reindexing will
help.

[Bug 154697] Succeeded at last!

2007-11-08 Thread CarloBaldassi
I can add some more details now:

The first installation failed, giving first a non-fatal error about
cupsys upgrade, then crashing in the process of writing the kernel
image!!! Clearly, this left me with a non-working 2.6.22 (generic)
kernel. I had to restore the partition from the image I made
(PartitionImage + Knoppix saved my life, I strongly advice this
combination!!!).

Then I tried again and it worked just fine.

Differences between the first and the second time were:
1) The second time I did activate cupsys before upgrading, since I read in
another bug report that having it turned down was a cause of failure
2) Maybe more important, I avoided uninstalling the nvidia drivers. Those were
installed through the "envy" script. The first time I removed them as adviced
on the envy website, and I did also purge compiz (which I had from the git
repository). The second time I left everything as it was, and all I had to do
at the end was downgrading some compiz packages which had not been overwritten
by the upgrade (ccsm and a couple others).

I hope this helps.

[Bug 156679] Re: gcompris crashes in 'rebuild the mosaic'

2007-11-08 Thread Ace Suares
Hi, I had some difficulty finding that application. For me it was 1st item on
the left-side menu Discovery Activities), 4th item on the first row (Color
Activities), 1st item on the submenu (Rebuild the mosaic).
Is that the correct application ?

What do you mean by 'draw' the piece ? I can click on any of the colors
on the row of colors at the bottom and then a green 'check-sign' will be
in that color. Then I can click on any of the blocks to the top-right
side and it will become that color.

Please supply more information (maybe a screenshot ?)
