[Bug 165331] Re: Ubuntu 7.10 disc will load kernel and go blank after

2007-12-05 Thread Brian Murray
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. I believe this has to do with the fact that your laptop
did not meet the minimum memory requirements for running the Live
desktop environment for Gutsy and I am subsequently closing the bug
report as invalid. However, feel free to report any future bugs you
might find. Thanks!

mention the name of your real desktop directory (i.e. it may have the

[Bug 161132] Re: new install, kernel panic, not syncing

2007-12-05 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this
bug as a bug in linux-source-2.6.15.

Now that the 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon release of Ubuntu is out, we were
wondering if you can still reproduce this issue with the current
release? You can simply test this by using the LiveCD of the 7.10 Gutsy
Gibbon release. You can download and try the new version of Ubuntu from
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download . Please report back your
results. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 164904] Re: stray mappings left behind by xfs make xen kernels crash.

2007-12-05 Thread Andres Freund
As additional info, here is the git commit:
commit 7f015072348a14f16d548be557ee58c5c55df0aa
Author: Jeremy Fitzhardinge [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Wed Oct 17 13:55:03 2007 +1000

[XFS] eagerly remove vmap mappings to avoid upsetting Xen

XFS leaves stray mappings around when it vmaps memory to make it virtually
contigious. This upsets Xen if one of those pages is being recycled into a
pagetable, since it finds an extra writable mapping of the page.

This patch solves the problem in a brute force way, by making XFS always
eagerly unmap its mappings.

[Bug 174198] Re: Missing dependency on java2-runtime et al.

2007-12-05 Thread Chris J
I am using Sun Java 6 and being prompted to install Icedtea 7. Those using
java-package to turn the Sun binaries into real packages as opposed to using
sun-java6-jre (et al.) dummy packages, which IIRC contain a post-install script
to download and install the Sun binaries, will find themselves (barring a major
modification to java-package's complex maze of scripts) with packages called
sun-j2re1.6 or sun-j2sdk1.6. The latter provides the following virtuals:
* java-virtual-machine
* java-runtime
* java2-runtime
* java-browser-plugin
* java-compiler
* java2-compiler
* j2sdk1.6
* j2re1.6

I presume the former to be the same, sans the -compiler and j2sdk1.6
virtuals. If none are suitable, please add sun-j2re{5,6} and sun-
j2sdk{5,6} as dependencies.

[Bug 174212] Re: Cannot save file to FTP server (on desktop)

2007-12-05 Thread David Bensimon
I was using Ubuntu 7.04 on a thin client for that particular error.
I just tried the same thing on Ubuntu 7.10 (desktop instalation) and found that.

1) The FTP was already in the quick-save/favorites list (That makes me
happy)

BUT
2) I still could not save to it directly (see screenshot).

[Bug 174234] Scripts inside /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d don't get executed

2007-12-05 Thread Christoph Langner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

As far as i know Network Manager runs all scripts inside
/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d when connecting to a network. But this
doesn't seem to work. For testing i created a simple script

/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/02test
---
#!/bin/sh -e
echo nmtest /tmp/nmlog.txt
---

and set the rights according to specs

---
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 39 2007-12-05 22:33 02test
---

But when i start network manager (my computer is connected to a router
running dhcp via cable) nothing happens. /tmp/nmlog.txt stays empty.
This looks like the script doesn't get executed when Network Manager
opens the connection.

[Bug 174195] Re: crash handler not catching crashes

2007-12-05 Thread Gene Caldwell
I'd like to add that Compiz crashes once a week for me with Gutsy on a
fresh install, even though I do have crash handler turned on in the
advanced settings manager for compiz, but I have no clue as to why its
shutting down. I don't see a single bug report on this behavior in
launchpad for compiz, so how is it going to get fixed if there is
nothing trapping errors and I have no clue as to why its happening ? I
would think that we should be able to turn it on so that any useful
information COULD be captured

[Bug 88899] Re: cpufreq locked in slowest speed

2007-12-05 Thread lunomad
Rob:

I finally got a chance to do some hunting on the internet for a solution
to this problem. The problem appears to be rooted in unsettable BIOS
thermal tables. Downgrading to BIOS A02 appears to solve the problem,
but as I run dual-screen I don't think I'll be doing this (the A02 has
earlier Intel915 graphics firmware). I might try a kernel downgrade to
see if the problem can be resolved with my previous kernel (I don't
recall this same issue, but perhaps I just didn't notice). I used to
get an error [EMAIL PROTECTED]:1 on boot, which has disappeared. Perhaps
something in there?

[Bug 174180] window decorator shadows

2007-12-05 Thread Gene Caldwell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz-gnome

While I know some may believe that this is not a bug, but rather a
configuration correction to a desktop effect, I do not. It is a change
to an expected behavior that was working correctly, and now does not
display correctly. Window shadows were working correctly up until 2
weeks ago, and then suddenly computer after computer started showing
this problem. Shadows are not showing on all sides of a window. They are
only showing on the right and bottom of a window. This behavior includes
the shadows at the top menu bar as well as the bottom menu bar of the
desktop. The problem is that the result of the unknown change is that
part of the desktop looks like it has depth( a shadow) and part does
not. So the top of my desktop has the shadow, but the bottom does not,
and it looks like the upper half of my desktop has desktop effects
turned on, and the bottom half of my desktop does not have desktop
effects turned on. It has made 3D desktops look ridicules and I am
forced to turn shadows off to have a consistent look for the desktop.
another example is that when any window is opened in the middle of the
screen, it has shadows only on 2 sides of the window. So 2 sides of the
window look like they have depth, and the other 2 sides DO NOT have
depth - it looks like shadows are both turned ON, and OFF for the same
window. Technically a single source light source may be correct to give
shadow effects, but in practice the initial Gutsy effect was much more
functional. I consider this a bug because I can not find any way to
restore the original functionality for shadows on ALL 4 sides of windows
including a completely new install of Gutsy. And one last thought, I
don't want a developer to say I can only have shadows on 2 sides of
windows for my choice of window decorations, at least add add an option
in the window decoration plugin that restores this behavior for those of
us that want full decoration effects on the entire desktop, not just on
2 sides of windows.

[Bug 173260] Re: logprof doesn't handle marks (in any usefull way)

2007-12-05 Thread Dominic Reynolds
Hi.

This is the intended behavior of logprof/genprof (perhaps as you suggest
there could be better intended behavior :)

The way its used is that genprof marks the log with a random string to
denote the log section it should be looking at when you Scan For
Events while generating a new profile. So the tools know to ignore
everything before the mark.

Its possible that logprof could be modified so that it records the last
entry processed (the date or some unique id from the log entry - or
even marks the log again and saves the mark). Then on subsequent runs it
could start where it left of - so not asking the same questions that you
have chosen Deny for.

-dom

It uses the logger command (defined in /etc/apparmor/logprof.conf) to
mark the logs.

For a quite uncomprehended reason, nautilus has generated logs last day (I

Maybe due to the dbgm package install (though it occurred a few weeks ago ?)

So, here are examples of the log (available as an attachment).

[Bug 164821] Re: Cannot all updates can be installed

2007-12-05 Thread Jamie Strandboge
I am glad that removing the debian line helped. My feeling is that the
problem you are currently having is a result of having mixed Debian and
Ubuntu packages.

At this point I am going to close this bug. We appreciate the
difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise your
question in the support tracker. Please visit
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion, and do indicate that
you had been using the Debian repository. If it is indeed a problem
with the Ubuntu packages, please issue separate bug reports for those
packages.

[Bug 172432] Re: Wish: Removable Mediums, Permissions and Multiple Users

2007-12-05 Thread Victor B. Gonzalez
by mediums I mean, USB Disk, Video/Camera or SD, Memory Stick, etc.
Plugging these mediums into a system and trying to control who can read,
write, exec them is by no way trivial. It's virtually impossible. by
unforeseen, there is no way to lock down these external mediums *before*
they're attached and mounted. unlike harddisk, unforeseen mediums are
just far too dynamic for users to have any kind of trivial control over
them. this is where harddisk and external medium differ like night and
day. It would be nice if full control over this type of medium was as
simple as controlling the local harddisk.

[Bug 173500] Re: Knode works despite a zillion error messages

2007-12-05 Thread dAniel hAhler
Ok. I'm closing this as invalid then, because it's just a warning.

The X Error you are seeing is probably bug 42553.
You can fix it, by removing
InputDevice stylus SendCoreEvents
 InputDevice cursor SendCoreEvents
 InputDevice eraser SendCoreEvents
from your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

[Bug 174156] mouse pointer disappears in hardy

2007-12-05 Thread Christophe Charlot
Public bug reported:

No particular step to reproduce.

I upgraded my VM (Virtualbox) from gutsy to hardy, had some problems
with Xorg which was broken, repaired it with a sudo dpgk-reconfigure
xserver-xorg...; and then no more mouse pointer !

The mouse is here, since I can see the changes when the 'pointer' passes
over the parts of the screen but it seems the pointer is reduced to one
point... so it is quite unuseable..
