[Bug 157650] Re: ATA port freezes randomly

2007-12-09 Thread gwi
[quote]My guess is the ata errors will slowly come back after a few
weeks[/quote]
Wrong assumption: the day of the reinstall I have used the system for over 8
hours, without a problem. Used VMware server to install three more servers in
the virtual network, made backup copied of the virtual systems (total more than
22GB of data). All without a problem. This morning I had to boot three times
before I got to a login screen. And even in that sessions things were slowed
down because of the ata errors.

[Bug 137784] Re: [Gutsy] texlive-base-bin post-installation error

2007-12-09 Thread Sam Peterson
I can confirm this bug as well, seems to have happened after an update.
Something to do with conf-file mixups between packages...purging and
reinstalling fixed the problem for me.

sudo aptitude purge texlive-base texlive

The above command also uninstalled docbook-utils and auctex (my emacs
tex editor). It may uninstall other things, such as add-on tex packages
so you may want to pay close attention to the uninstall process. Here's
the command I used for the reinstall:

sudo aptitude install texlive docbook-utils auctex.

Add whatever extras you need. After a long time this will get you
updated to a working system again.

Shame this was such a problem. Chatter upstream on the debian bug
mailing lists seems to indicate a problem with configuration scripts
fighting over files and genuinely making a mess of things.

Then I tried:

So could you tell me a bit more detail how should i do to debug the

fuser -uv /dev/usbx

where /dev/usbx is the device for your camera.

That will give you the process ID, account username, and command of any
process using that device.

..This should be started as a separate bug, since the two problems
(permissions, and blocking as already used) aren't the same. Feel free

the unnecessary sonypi module from loading by commenting it out of

[Bug 175243] screen flickers only if text tty entered (radeon)

2007-12-09 Thread Misha Koshelev
Public bug reported:

I "upgraded" to Gutsy by doing a clean install a couple of days ago and now
have noticed a strange screen flickering bug.
I have a radeon mobility 9000 on a Dell Inspiron 600m, and did not have this
problem previously with Feisty Fawn.

The bug is screen flickering in text consoles _and_ X. Interestingly, though,
this bug does not occur if I boot into splash and then
it goes straight to X. I am able to log on and use desktop effects and such
without any flicker. However, the moment it has to
switch to a text tty/vt, whether through a Ctrl-Alt-Fn or after I log out when
X restarts, it starts flickering and the flicker makes
everything pretty much unusable (well quite annoying at least). I tried booting
with vga=normal but that doesn't change anything. No splash on boot doesn't
help.

I believe this has something to do with the new text tty changes in Gutsy vs
Feisty, but am not sure exactly what these are, so if someone has some advice
maybe on something I can do to try to mess with these that would be great (I'm
pretty sure it's not
an X issue per se b/c it does not seem to happen the first time X starts and I
log on after splash; oh yeah also it does _not_ happen when BIOS is starting
and in the initial splash; however after we go to tty I can't get the flicker
to stop).

Thanks a lot
Misha

Marcus,

Since upstream (i.e. you) triage these bugs it's ok for you to set them
to Fix Committed (Fix Released would be set once the fix is in the
repository).

However if someone wants to get the patch before the release it's ok if
they set it to something different than Fix Committed so the sponsors
look into it.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: solarwolf

Using Ubuntu Gutsy current to the repositories (Dec. 9, 2007). My
screen resolution is 1280x1024. Running solarwolf for the first time
starts it in fullscreen mode (800x600). Unfortunately, this squashes
the gnome panel icons together (equivalent to if I had resized my screen
to 800x600) such that when I leave the game, I have to manually correct
  them.

It would be far preferable for SolarWolf to start in windowed mode and
then give the user the option to change it to full screen, rather than
  the other way around.
-
- Also, it would be preferable to stretch the SolarWolf window as needed
- rather than resizing the screen down, but that's a more complex

Strange! It has happened to me on 3 occasions, consecutively. I had to

[Bug 175239] missing __init__.py = segfault

2007-12-09 Thread Carl Karsten
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libapache2-mod-python

It is probably more like "raise EnvironmentError" causes segfault, but
I'm note expert enough.

I found this testing https://launchpad.net/bugs/175230 "__init__.py
missing"

These 2 are not dependent on each other -
if 175230 isn't fixed, then the rm __init__.py steps below don't need to be
done.

Steps:

Install Ubuntu-Server (only openssh-server)

sudo apt-get install libapache2-mod-python python-django
sudo rm /usr/share/doc/python-django/examples/__init__.py

sudo vim /etc/apache2/sites-available/django-example

SetHandler python-program
PythonHandler django.core.handlers.modpython
PythonDebug On
PythonPath "['/usr/share/doc/python-django'] + sys.path"
SetEnv DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE examples.settings

sudo a2dissite default
sudo a2ensite django-example
sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 reload

hit box with browser

[Bug 159733] Re: Dell Dimension 2400 - Gutsy fails to reboot

2007-12-09 Thread Leann Ogasawara
The Hardy Heron kernel was recently uploaded for testing. We'd really
appreciate it if you could try testing with this newer kernel and verify
if this issue still exists. Unfortunately, the Hardy Heron Alpha1
LiveCD was released with the older 2.6.22 kernel. You'll have to
manually install the newer Hardy Heron kernel in order to test. This
should not be the case for Alpha2. However, here are the instructions
to install (if you choose to do so):

1) edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list and add the following line:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy main restricted

2) sudo apt-get update
3) sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.24-1-generic
4) reboot and select the new kernel from the grub menu

After you've tested, please feel free to revert back - ie boot into the
old kernel, sudo apt-get remove linux-image-2.6.24-1-generic, and remove
the line from /etc/apt/sources.list . Please update this report with
your results. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 175238] nothing happens when the power button is pressed on ThinkPad X61

[Bug 175237] Gnome startup opens all sessions on desk 1

2007-12-09 Thread Skip VerDuin
Public bug reported:

Upon gnome startup, all previous sessions from all desks are restarted
on only desk number one. Once started any session may be again moved
to other desks and do function normally thereafter.

Further - the multi-desk preview on the panel is flawed by displaying
only in the upper 1/2 of the allocated screen space without regard for
the size of the panel. I normally function with six desk tops.

Further - the desktop image is blank (black screen) upon startup.
Interestingly enough - the image can be caused to appear by clicking on
the trash icon on the panel which also opens the trash bin window. --
No / I did not (knowingly) trash the image. Upon going thru the
workaround of clicking trash, the desktio image functions normally.

All three behaviors began after upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10 -- The upgrade
was initiated from the check-box in the software update function.
Updates here are normally applied weekly -- no updates pending to my
system today. The platform is an IBM G40.

Please advise if more data is required. THANKS

[Bug 143998] Re: rename 'bazaar' package to 'baz'

2007-12-09 Thread Martin Pool
The only reasons I know of are:

1- There may be some hardcore users, who wish to keep using baz even
though it is orphaned by upstream. (Robert pointed (indirectly) to http
://lists-archives.org/debian-devel/124715-bug-433143-itp-bzr-rebase-
rebase-plugin-for-bazaar.html)

2- baz is needed to upgrade old archives to bzr using bzrtools, and very
likely to upgrade them using other tools like tailor. So even if no one
is still using baz, there may be people who will someday need it to
retrieve historical data.

I'm happy to leave it up to the people doing the work whether these are
a strong enough reason to keep baz around in a package named "baz". It
has seemed to me like Debian has tended to package everything that might
be useful to somewhere that's technically and legally possible.

[Bug 175233] evolution hangs after several hours

2007-12-09 Thread Joe Ross
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I am using evolution with 8 imap accounts (on two different servers).
After running evolution for several hours, it will "hang". The UI will
still be responsive, but it won't show any new messages, displays
"formatting message". It also won't close, I have to kill it from the
command line. I have only seen this on gusty, not any earlier versions
(I've been using ubuntu since 6.06), with the same setup. Sometimes, an

I will attach a backtrace that I created with libglib2.0-0-dbg

will be usefull, since it didn't really crash.

sorry, I'm using ubuntu (GNOME) 7.10, with latest updates when the bug
was found.

File... well it was pretty big so I deleted it after extracting with
unrar.. I will try some more and report back when I can find an example.

cheers,

Thank you for your suggestion. I tried adding acpi=force and it still
did not work. I did a cheap workaround by purchasing a $4.95 USB sound
device from Amazon; this works OK, but not great.

Thanks!!!

[Bug 153152] Re: [Gutsy SRU request] Fax utility not adding files to job.

2007-12-09 Thread cappycaffeine
Don't know if this will help with 2.7.7, but I ran the following to
configure 2.7.10 that fixes the problem with the faxing.

Scanning and printing work as well. This has been tested via a networked
HP Photosmart c6180 All-In-One.

I have created a debian package of my 2.7.10 install with checkinstall. It
conflicts with hpijs, but I am afraid to remove the hpijs package since
removing it also removes
ubuntu-desktop (??)

Anyways, I installed with make install, and then built the checkinstall
package on my system, so if you would like to use the 2.7.10 debian
package, you will probably need to force the install to overwrite the
common files with the hpijs package.

Here's the link:
http://sarnov.dnsdojo.com/utilities/hplip_2.7.10-1_i386.deb

Good luck!!

BTW: I take no responsibility if this package borks your system.. You
have been warned!! ;)

[Bug 172247] Re: fullscreen controls flicker on and off

2007-12-09 Thread Gaspard Leon
sorry, I couldn't find a bug that was the same, so I logged a new one...
I've noticed since that very occasionally (maybe once in 15 loads) it
will not update the fullscreen correctly, the background (black bars)
above and below the video will be whatever was below when maximizing, so
will look incorrect, however when the display is corrupted thusly, the
flickering does not occur...

anyway, it's probably an issue with compiz or emerald since it doesn't
occur when you have desktop-effects turned off.

[Bug 162252] Re: ctrl-alt-f7 doesn't always return to valid X session

2007-12-09 Thread Skip VerDuin
My IBM G40 acts the same way - except I do not know any sequence of
events to guarentee the event / it appears to be random. The work
around is to reboot. I believe 7.04 worked OK, and only 7.10 presents
the bug -- but I can't be certain.

I am slightly troubled by new (to me) behavior in switching between VCs.
I now find both ALT+CTRL+Fx and (new?) ALT+Fx work to switch between
ascii consoles.

Upon reaching F7 console the display remains black with cursor and is
responsive to the keyboard. There is no line prompt, and certainly the
entered text is not responded to -- even special sequences except the
CTRL+ALT+Fx does switch back to an ascii console. There is no
screensaver or non-default setting for the GUI, and I suspect it does
not matter which desktop environment is in use at the time of leaving
the GUI (I use Gnome, KDE, and XMI(?)).

I've been living with this behavior for a month(?) and all available
updates available today are applied (weekly since upgrade). Please
advise if I can supply specific data.

[Bug 110219] Re: python-gnuplot package not working in feisty fawn

2007-12-09 Thread T
I'm running Ubuntu on an AMD64 machine and this bug just crawled out of
hiding for me today. I've written some custom libraries on top of this
module that I use for day-to-day work, and they just all broke.

When I run test.py I get errors like
"""
gnuplot> plot '/tmp/tmpPUG4IK' notitle
Plot Data, specified column-by-column
Press return to show results...
Warning: empty x range [0:0], adjusting to [-1:1]
Warning: empty y range [0.544021:0.544021], adjusting to [0.538581:0.549461]

Warning: empty y range [0.544021:0.544021], adjusting to [0.538581:0.549461]

When I try things by hand, only the first point in the data sets gets plotted,
and it looks like
the auto-range command fails in the standard way as a result. I'm running
Gutsy with
python2.5 right now.

[Bug 104929] Re: Marvell 88E8056 crashes Ubuntu Feisty system

2007-12-09 Thread Christopher
Actually, I did a bit of investigating today. I messed up a kernel
upgrade and subsequently tried to install Hardy Alpha 1 and it wouldn't
boot properly after install. So I gave up on Hardy, reinstalled Gutsy,
and got some help from an awesome guy in the ubuntu irc channel to
upgrade my kernel to 2.6.23.9. To make a long story short, I
successfully compiled and installed 2.6.23.9 and so far so good. I have
been transferring large files via nautilus over my network without a
problem. I will post back here if anything changes, but I think the
issue has been solved with the 2.6.23 kernel. If anyone would like me to
post instructions on how I upgraded the kernel, I will do so (maybe in a
forum post).

[Bug 175227] Re: 2.6.22-14-rt halts during boot on some computers, without the nosmp noapic nolapic kernel options

2007-12-09 Thread LA
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-14-rt

Fresh installation of Ubuntustudio 7.10 on an ACER Aspire 5102 .

The system boots, the Ubuntustudio splash appears. The halts at the same
point (even for hours), unless I keep pressing ANY key (even alt or ctrl) until
it gets into the graphical interface.
Switching to the boot terminal ( Alt+Ctrl+F1 ) I noticed that it waits for me
to press any key, in order to proceed one step further in the boot process.
The same happens if I shutdown the system. It doesn't shutdown unless I press
any key for 2-3 times.

I finally found sth similar reported in ubuntuforums (
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=448792 ), by another acer 5100 user,
and the proposed solution worked.
They proposed adding nosmp noapic nolapic as kernel boot parameters in the
/boot/grub/menu.lst
+ Of course this solution is not acceptable because nosmp takes advantage of
only half of my 64 x2 CPU processor.
+

  The problem didn't occur
  - with the same ubuntustudio version, freshly installed, on my desktop PC.
  - after downgrading my laptop to the "-generic" kernel ,without any kernel
boot option
  - on an older installation of ubuntu Feisty, on the same laptop.
therefore I consider it as a potential bug.

[Bug 175227] 2.6.22-14-rt halts during boot on some computers, without the nosmp noapic nolapic kernel options

2007-12-09 Thread LA
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-14-rt

Fresh installation of Ubuntustudio 7.10 on an ACER Aspire 5102 .

The system boots, the Ubuntustudio splash appears. The halts at the same point
(even for hours), unless I keep pressing ANY key (even alt or ctrl) until it
gets into the graphical interface.

The problem didn't occur
- with the same ubuntustudio version, freshly installed, on my desktop PC.
- after downgrading my laptop to the "-generic" kernel ,without any kernel boot
option
- on an older installation of ubuntu Feisty, on the same laptop.
therefore I consider it as a potential bug.

[Bug 175225] Gutsy broken after upgrade

2007-12-09 Thread Ajith Hussain
Public bug reported:

I installed all the latest updates as of December 9, 2007 (I have all
the repositories enabled in Software Sources, but haven't added any new
ones). After restart, the GTK2+ theme was reset to an ugly-looking one.
After some time, I get the error (maybe while trying to open
'Appearance' dialog) that gnome-settings-daemon could not be started,
maybe because some other (KDE) settings daemon might be running.
However, I do not have KDE (or kdelibs) installed on my pc. I formatted
the partition and did a fresh install of Ubuntu. I did a complete update
again and the problem happened again. I am guessing that maybe some
update is breaking my Ubuntu installation, though I am not sure where
exactly.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Fresh install of Ubuntu
2) Set custom theme.
3) [Install NVidia restricted drivers]
4) Do a complete system update
5) Restart

Faulty behavior (as far as I have observed):
1) GTK2+ themes failing to load/persist
2) Audio is not playing
3) System crashes while shutdown. Have to power off manually.

System Information:
Ubuntu 64-bit Edition (x86_64) on
Intel Pentium D810 2.8GHz
2GB DDR2 667 MHz
250GB SATA with / and /home on separate partitions
NVidia 8600GT 512MB (latest repository drivers installed - 100.x)

[Bug 85780] Re: gThumb red eye reduction does not work

2007-12-09 Thread sonicsteve
That comment was perhaps a bit confusing. Really after using this tool I find
that the algorithm simply needs to be adjusted. I have found that it will only
work unless the eyes are perfectly red. If there is pink, orange, or anything
other than red, it just leaves it alone and changes the red pixels and ignores
everything else. More often than not the tool will only change a fraction of
the eye and leave the rest orange, pink or white.
My suggestion in the previous comment is just that if you can define the area
of the eye, it might make it easier for the algorithm to handle. This way it
knows that the eye has a pupil, since orange or pink is not a natural eye
colour it can change it to grey/black as a pupil should be.

[Bug 151849] Re: Sound Broke in Ubuntu Gutsy firefox

2007-12-09 Thread Jacqueline
The sound is definitely working for other programs (sorry, should have stated
that for sure).
I went through and installed the newest version of Flash as per the
instructions in the thread you linked to above, Cyrus.
There is no .asoundrc file in my home directory (or in anyone else's).
There are no messages (error or otherwise) when I start Firefox from the
command line.
I'm using Ubuntu release 7.10; 2.6.22-14-generic kernel.
(Also, may be helpful to note that it's not just a problem with Youtube. I
also get no sound from Pandora Radio, which is also flash based.)

Anything else that I could try/give information on?

2007-12-09 Thread Onno Benschop
While I understand why you may think this is a dosfstools bug, it's
really not.

This is really IMHO a policy bug that applies across the board.

Also, the bug talks about gparted, not dosfstools.

Finally, dosfstools does not actually show sizes anywhere that I'm aware
of.

[Bug 85780] Re: gThumb red eye reduction does not work

2007-12-09 Thread sonicsteve
I would like to report this also. Often in pics the eyes are orange/red. The
tool only works well with eyes that are clearly red. The tool needs to be
configurable or needs to be made so it can remove orange/red/ or whatever to
normal.
If the tool was used like a drag/selection box so you select the are of the eye
this would perhaps make the selection easier. That way the program would have a
defined area of space to change the colors.

[Bug 67224] Re: Gaim 2.0.0 chat refresh bug

2007-12-09 Thread Saïvann Carignan
This bug looks like a duplicate of bug #93868 which is fixed but I
believe that we must confirm that it's really fixed before marking this
bug as a duplicate.

How to install and use an animated smiley theme :

1. Download a animated smiley theme like QIP (
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/6861494/gaim-QIPsmileys.tar.gz )
2. Open Pidgin and click on Tools / Preferences
3. Go to the "Smiley Themes" tab and click on "Add" button
4. Select the previously downloaded theme ( must be a .tar.gz archive )
5. Make sure the new theme is selected in the list and click on close
6. You are now using animated smileys

You can also ask one of your friend which use Windows Live Messenger or
Yahoo Messenger / else to send you a animated smiley during a chat
session.
