[Bug 180022] no network after transferring files with ssh

2008-01-02 Thread drieteenmeeuw
Public bug reported:

Often, when trying to transfer large files from my laptop (Gutsy) to my desktop
(Dapper) using ssh over the wired network at my work, when a transfer size of
c. 8 MB has been reached, the transfer stops and the connection with the outer
world (Internet, ping, ssh, desktop) is gone. The laptop does not respond to
pinging from the desktop. I know of no way to get the connection going again,
other than the Windows-solution; a re-start. Sudo dhclient or sudo
/etc/init.d/networking restart does not work.
1) What is going on? 2) How could I get my network back again without rebooting?

[Bug 162757] Re: Screen blanks permanently on Toshiba Satellite 1800 during 7.10 Live CD bootup or full installation

2008-01-02 Thread Tom McCullough
I have a satellite 1805-253 (very similar, trident cyberbladei1 850Mhz piii,
etc) I have the exact same results. The system is actually working minus the
display, because I can go into reboot by CTRL-ALT-DEL then enter. I cannot
switch to a console with CTL-ALT-F1 - 6. I had the same results from the
testing net-install disc for debian. (lenny) debian etch worked fine as did
7.04. init level 1 works fine. if you want any log outputs, I can post them.
I have 7.10 on my desktop and I am very impressed.

[Bug 176110] Re: no sound with atiixp, codec timeout - driver not loaded

2008-01-02 Thread Anders Semb Hermansen
I looked around some more and found
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7467
It looks a lot like my problem.

So I unloded snd-atiixp and reloaded it with ac97_codec=0. And it works!

I created a file /etc/modprobe.d/atiixp with the content:
options snd-atiixp ac97_codec=0

and now it works between reboots :)

All this was done in 7.10.

A quirk should probably be added to snd-atiixp the same way as for DFI
rs482

I think this is linux kernel problem.Installing the latest Fedora didn't
do any good , the drive kept clicking all the way through the
installation , increasing by about 500 in an hour or so , after the
install -without laptop-mode- it kept increasing at about ~1 per minute.

[Bug 178888] Re: Please sync nmap 4.50-4 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

2008-01-02 Thread William Pitcock
Hi Melissa,

I realise that point. My purpose was sort of a friendly reminder that this
is a bug report, and not a place for discussing whether or not the word
"dude" is politically correct or not, and nothing more.

I do think it's an amusing thing to read in a changelog entry though, and
probably for the better: nmap has had a reputation of being somewhat
childish (calling people "dude", saying things are "fucked up", etc) in it's
error messages.

As for nmap 4.52, it's not yet in Debian I don't think, so we'd be looking
at nmap 4.52-0ubuntu1, and I'm not sure how lamont feels about that, so
we should probably just leave that to him.

[Bug 83623] Re: NetworkManager hangs with 100% cpu

2008-01-02 Thread Manuel Siggen
After nearly two months with the fixed version, I think I identified a
case were NetworkManager still use 100% CPU and needs to be killed. Here
is the step to reproduce :

 - hit the Fn+F4 key (= suspend-to-ram shortcut on my thinkpad X40)
 - while the computer is suspending (blinking 'moon' led), close the lid (=
closing the lid is configured to initiate a suspend-to-ram)

=> upon resume, NetworkManager will hang with 100% cpu.

Once hanged, NetworkManager needs to be killed with 'kill -9' and could
be restarted (sudo /etc/dbus-1/event.d/25NetworkManager restart), but it
will hang again at each subsequent resume from suspend-to-ram.

Hope it helps.

[Bug 180019] Live/Install CD busybox tar -> invalid Tar magic error on a valid Gnu Tar Archiv

2008-01-02 Thread Torsten
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: busybox

Hi.
I want to clone another ubuntu installation on a new box.
I've tared the source tree with gnu tar (tar cpf) and wanted to extract it on
the new platform.
I've used x86 server install cd to boot up the system, copied the archiv on the
new filesystem and want to extract it.
md5sums are correct!
Using the tar from the livecd/installcd which is a symlink to busybox does
result in this error:

tar: Invalid tar magic

Although its a valid gnu tar Archiv.

I have to use a copy of a gnu Tar binary from an existing box (copied it,
libraries matched so it runs) and oh magic, i was able to extract the tar
archiv without this error.
Busybox tar is broken, this should be fixed or gnu tar should be delivered with
the livecd.

the HD when I have to do this every few hours since my sistem HAS to run
24/7

This happens only on login manager after the screen goes to sleep, then
nothing wakes up, I can hear fans and all, just doesn't respond, I
believe I started having this problem with last linux headers update

[Bug 147736] Re: [Gutsy] PDF printer not available by default

2008-01-02 Thread Jan Frybort
Martin-Éric Racine: I don't know if it is the default behavior but I
believe that PDF printer should be available out of the box. This didn't
happen in my case (even with final version of Gutsy). So this is not
only the matter to set the PDF printer as default one but to make it
available at all.

[Bug 180015] [Gutsy] X Hard lock-up with X3100 on Vostro 1400 (intel GM965)

2008-01-02 Thread Andrew King
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Running application gmsh (OpenGL) causes system crash (hard reboot required).
This has happened on every occasion, after varying (but very short) amounts of
time.

Have run the application on one occasion with DRI disabled, and no crash
occurred (though application became unbearably slow).

in xorg.0.log there is a line "space: 129768 wanted 131064" which looks
like a possible cause.

last part of xorg.0.log is as follows (complete log attached
separately):

[Bug 173890] Re: flashplugin-nonfree fails to install... new version?

2008-01-02 Thread Richard Burdick
I'd term this a workaround, as it gets the current package installed
while we wait for a fix.

My preferred solution is to install the current package (which installs
r48), instead of these ad-hoc work arounds (that install r115) which may
have problems when the package is fixed.

(For instance, r48 is reported to work better than r115, and we know
r115 doesn't work at all in Konqueror, so installing r48 is the only
thing that will work for Konqueror users. I think we should vet 115
very carefully before committing to it.)

The problem is, the current package downloads r115, which is not what we
want, because it is expecting r48. Luckily, the current package has a
provision for you to download the r48 version yourself and tell the
installer where it is. Adobe has a zip file of all Flash 9 players
they've released that you can get the r48 version from (they keep it
available for developers to test their flash projects against).

You won't be able to enter the location of the r48 version by default,
because Ubuntu's debconf is set to only show questions of priority
'high' or above, and the question about the location of r48 is priority
medium. You have to reconfigure debconf to show questions of priority
'medium' first (afterwards you can reset it to 'high'). This is
explained below.

The steps I followed were:

I got the Flash 9 archive from here:
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/installers/archive/fp9_archive.zip
which I found on this page:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14266

Unzip the .zip file (use unzip from the command line or file-roller)
Copy the r48 version to /tmp and change it's name to what the installer is
expecting at the same time:
 cp fp9_archive/9r48/install_flash_player_9r48_linux.tar.gz
/tmp/install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz

reconfigure debconf to show medium priority questions:
 sudo dpkg-reconfigure debconf

It will ask 2 questions. The answer to the first should be 'Dialog'
(Ubuntu's default). The answer to the second question about priority of
questions to show should be 'medium'. (Low also works)

Install flashplugin-nonfree:

You can use apt-get, synaptic or aptitude.

apt-get (command line)
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

synaptic - search for flashplugin-nonfree and install it.

aptitude - you probably know how to select a package for installed if
you use aptitude.

For any of the methods, debconf should ask you what the location of the
downloaded file is. Enter /tmp (Do not enter the filename of the file,
just the directory location) and it should install correctly.

If you want, reconfigure debconf to only show you 'high' priority questions
again:
 sudo dpkg-reconfigure debconf

I believe downloading the .zip from adobe in the installer is one of the
solutions being looked at to fix this bug, but the downside is that the
65M size is quite large for dial-up customers. Not sure what the
maintainers solution will be, but this will at least get the current one
installed if you can afford the 65M download.

RE: [Bug 156517] Re: New mail doesn't filter anymore, restart doesn't work either

2008-01-02 Thread Naran K Patel
I believe it happens after the exchange connector daemon dies
unexpectedly, although I'm not sure if it opens/closes automatically as
needed. I do know that killing all the cache folders re-sync's and
download folders and filtering works for a while again. Killing all the
processes and restarting evolution alone doesn't work alone.

[Bug 59392] Re: update-desktop-database segfault

2008-01-02 Thread Paul Dufresne
Hi again Bill!
You could try:
grep -r -L "\[Desktop Entry\]" /usr/share/applications/*|grep .desktop
This is supposed to show .desktop files that don't contain "[Desktop Entry]"
which would in my
opinion be the cause of your bug.

If you find zero, it probably means I made some bad assumption.
If you find one or two, then they are likely to be the cause of your problem.
Please attach it (or them).
If you find a lot, then, again I must have make an other bad assumption.

[Bug 83276] Re: konqueror doesn't remember last used view profile

2008-01-02 Thread Russ
For the OP issue I had the same thing and you just need to change the
shortcut text as already indicated.

For the other posts by people like me who want a different default file view
than the next-to-useless-imho icon view (detailed list view rules!), this link
explains how to do it:
http://strabes.wordpress.com/2007/04/05/make-konqueror-use-your-default-view-mode-in-new-tabs/

Not intuitive at all, but it does the trick. It certainly should be a
lot easier.

Now if only the proportional window sizes on the navigation panel would
be remembered between instances when using "Multiple views"! I use that
to enable multiple network shares in the same view a la Windows Explorer
since I find it annoying to see multiple drives mixed in with "normal"
directories as mount points. Not sure of another way to do it, but even
Nautilus does it.

[Bug 180011] Lack of SFD source file breaks LGPL license and makes file unredistributable!

2008-01-02 Thread Dave Crossland
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ttf-ubuntu-title

The LGPL license requires source code to be redistributed with object
code. This file only contains TTF object code, not SFD source code, and
makes the file unredistributable!

http://understandinglimited.com/2008/01/03/font-sourcecode/ explains
about this in detail.

[Bug 59392] Re: update-desktop-database segfault

2008-01-02 Thread Paul Dufresne
Bill, it is possible that what I suggested you to do don't work.
At least Debian poster seems to say it does not work that way for him to find
corrupted .desktop files.

I am speaking to developers here.
I WAS WRONG.
I have deliberately broken my
/usr/share/applications/screensavers/flipscreen3d.desktop file by removing the
[desktop] line.
Then:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo update-desktop-database
Could not parse file
'/usr/share/applications/screensavers/flipscreen3d.desktop': Key file does not
start with a group
File '/usr/share/applications/totem.desktop' contains invalid MIME type '-e'
that is missing a slash
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

So Hardy SEEMS (I am slowly becoming more prudent) to not be affected.

I tried to compare Gutsy and Hardy and they seems the same to me.
After:
  mime_types = g_key_file_get_string_list (keyfile,
   g_key_file_get_start_group (keyfile),
   "MimeType", NULL, &load_error);
Code does:
  g_key_file_free (keyfile);

  if (load_error != NULL)
{
  g_propagate_error (error, load_error);
  return;
}

I have a new ... *hypothesis*
I now believe that this code is right.
But that there was an assert in the Glib for the g_key_file_get_start_group in
Gutsy that have been removed in Hardy.
So that now g_propagate_error do work (and was not going up to there in Gutsy
because of the hypothetical assert).

[Bug 36251] Re: Unreadable Font Size for GDM Login/Password

2008-01-02 Thread Bram Stolk
I've seen an even more severe case of this.
The font *really* is unreadable.
Only 3 pixels high, on my Sony XBR4 (40 inch 1920x1080).
After setting display size in the monitor section of xorg.conf, it got better.
It is readable now, but still way too small.

2008-01-02 Thread randallw
Hi all,

I have stumbled across the fix to the negative temp problems. See:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=623633

I tried the hardy alpha2 livecd, and the CPU fan does run, but quite
slowly. It is the same as running with the current gutsy kernel. I will
try to load up the system enough to change the fan status and report
back. (I put in an extra fan at the back of the box, which keeps the
whole thing cool enough now that it is hard to get the CPU too hot.)

[Bug 151572] Re: HP photosmart R717 camera not mounted when plugged

2008-01-02 Thread Nick B.
I think I have the same problem. I have an HP Photosmart R818 and when I
connect it in USB Mass Storage mode nothing happens but a ton of errors
in /var/log/messages. See attachment. After unplugging it I get an
error on the camera that the memory card cannot be read. After I turn
the camera off and on it's fine though. However when I connect the
camera in PTP mode it works fine. I think this is a regression from
Feisty as I believe it worked fine in Feisty under USB Mass Storage

[Bug 180007] There is no easy way to change icons for file types

2008-01-02 Thread Chandru
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

There is no easy way to change icons for file types. If I change in the
properties dialog of a file, the icon only for that particular file.
There should be an easy way to change the icons for all files of same
type.

This is especially important for files which do not have a proper icon
by default. The problem in my case was with .jar files. These files
were displayed with a plain white icon. I was able to change the
association for all .jar files from the properties dialog of a
particular .jar file. But was not able to change the icon displayed for
all .jar files.

[Bug 59392] Re: update-desktop-database segfault

2008-01-02 Thread Paul Dufresne
I was hoping that the update-desktop-database.out file would be created even if
I was expecting it to segfault.
Maybe you can just sudo update-desktop-database -v
That should give something like:
Search path is now: [/usr/local/share/applications, /usr/share/applications]
File '/usr/share/applications/gnome-settings-mouse.desktop' lacks MimeType key
File '/usr/share/applications/freecell.desktop' lacks MimeType key
File '/usr/share/applications/gnotravex.desktop' lacks MimeType key
File '/usr/share/applications/sound-juicer.desktop' lacks MimeType key
File '/usr/share/applications/gnome-power-preferences.desktop' lacks MimeType
key

up to some file, then segfault.
It would be cool if you could *attach* (go to the web site link, and to the
bottom you will find 'Include an attachment' box) the last file listed just
before the segfault.

This works now. There's quite a bit of brokenness is gutsy on the ibook,
but this isn't part of it. I'm reverting to Feisty, as that's the most
stable it seems on this hardware.

Thanks

[Bug 179959] Re: mod_ssl should not use +CompatEnvVars

2008-01-02 Thread Adam Sommer
Hardy docs updated in revision 3649. If we're going to do a SRU to fix
this issue for Gutsy we should also fix the links detailed in Bug
#162794.

I had an IRC conversation with Mathew East about that bug a while back,
so I'll work on a better patch for that issue as well.

Today, just before the X session crashed again, I got the following
message (don't know if this is at all related to this discussion here,
but I will type it in anyway):

Nautilus can't be used now, due to an unexpected error from Bonobo when
attempting to locate the factory.Killing bonobo-activation-server and
restarting Nautilus may help fix the problem.

Right after i clicked on the OK button for that message, the X server
crashed, logged in but there were no icons and no menu so I had to do a
hard reset.

Re: [Bug 179121] Re: bug in lirc 0.8.2 breaks transmitters - need 0.8.3pre1 packages

2008-01-02 Thread Andrew Barbaccia
Not sure about the patch. I don't think it pertains to the actual serial
module but rather irsend and lircd.

To prove this I recompiled the serial module (did not install) and replaced
the old .ko with the new .ko

After loading the appropraite modules, the driver still refused to load.
Once my compiled lirc (0.8.3pre1) was installed with all appropriate
binaries, etc the blaster started working again.

Additionally, it has been verified that transmission from the pvr_150 module
is failed as well.
