[Bug 197900] [NEW] Frequent total system freeze since Fri 29-Feb-08 security update

2008-03-02 Thread Gilles
Public bug reported:

I have been using Ubuntu 7.10 for quite a while now without any problems
however since Friday 29-Feb-2008 I am getting frequently complete system
lookups (keyboard led locks, and mouse too) especially when nautilus/x11
is trying to start (but it is that it is more frequent at boot, it also
happen later at any time).

Now I suspect this is due to a security update that was done on Friday.
On my machine I also have Ubuntu 7.04 (no auto update) and Windows XP
and they still works perfectly fine (which tends to rule out a hardware
fault).

So I have cancelled most of Friday's update and since the machine seems
to work fine (has been ok for a day whilst before I could not work more
than 10 minutes without having a crash).

So updates I have rolled back are as follow:
libnautilus-extension1 7.1 -> 7
libvolume-id0 17 -> 16
nautilus 7.1 -> 7
nautilus-data  7.1 -> 7

I was also planning to undo "udev" and "volumeid" but synaptic would not
let me do it (and so far it seems ok anyway).

Now I am sorry that I cannot provide any further details on the crashes
themselves as, when they occurs, I really lose complete control of the
machine and nothing appears in the logs :-(

At present, reverting these updates seems to have done the trick but I
also had to block the automatic update... Did anyone had something
similar??? Any suggestion on how to try and gather more info on the
crash itself (although I suspect it is going to be hard anyway due to
the way the machine crash).

We're in 2008, that should be automatic :) . I don't understand why
keyboards have not evolved and don't provide their layout.

After fixing the packages, update, upgrade wen through fine.

Would you still like this output?

[Bug 194933] Re: Compiz + 169-series NVIDIA drivers: frequent visual corruption of window title bars upon various title bar events

2008-03-02 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
I take it back. Just a moment ago I most definitely saw this occur on
Emerald with the "legacy" engine. I'd been using it for a week or more
without a problems though, so that means the bug is vastly less frequent
for Emerald than with any theme in gtk-window-decorator. I will try
using a different Emerald engine for a while and see if it happens
again.

[Bug 197892] [NEW] ATA exception upon starting smartd, breaking drive until next reboot

2008-03-02 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.24

I have an up-to-date i686 gutsy install on a Dell XPS M1710 laptop
(except that I have the hardy kernel and a few other hardy packages). I
have two SATA drives: one internal and one external (connected via an
eSATA-to-ExpressCard adapter). Today I installed smartmontools to
monitor my drives and started it with the default configuration. Upon it
attempting to inspect my external drive (which was connected but not, I
think, mounted), the kernel ATA driver spat out an exception message and
automatically unloaded the drive (i.e., it disappeared from /dev). Re-
connecting the drive and turning it on and off (which is possible since
it was external) did not get it back (the attempts produced no new
output from dmesg at all). However, after a reboot it was back and
working normally.

I have attached my syslog from when the problem occurred. The output for
it starts at "Problem creating device name scan list".

Also, this may not be relevant, but after re-connecting/restarting the
drive failed to fix things (but before rebooting), I tried to suspend
(twice) for an unrelated reason, but that failed because the ATA driver
couldn't shut down the external drive. This means that the driver was at
least still aware of that drive. The output for that can also be seen in
my syslog.

I'll be the first to admit that this is an obscure bug and probably also
upstream, and to make matters worse I have been unable to reproduce it.

Note that smartd does not work with my drives in the default
configuration (-d sat is required), but what I am reporting is
specifically the fact that the kernel got into a broken state.

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)

[Bug 197887] [NEW] Accessibility non-functional in only-ubiquity mode.

2008-03-02 Thread Luke Yelavich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

When attempting to boot the latest daily live CD with only-ubiquity
mode, the following things occur.

* Orca attempts to get loaded, however the orca process gets zombified.
* Ubiquity, at-spi-registryd, etc all are running as root.
a8 Even when attempting to load at-spi-registryd and orca by hand, Orca is
unable to speak the contents of the ubiquity window, and Orca shortcut keys do
not work, due to the at-spi-registry daemon's inability to catch them for some
reason.

Attached are the relevant files from /var/log/installer. Setting to
beta, as I would like to have this working by the beta release.

[Bug 197884] [NEW] Docs in Memo conduit can not be printed.

2008-03-02 Thread Jonathan Niccolls
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-pilot-conduits

I cannot print a document within Memo conduit in Evolution. I can use
print Icon in primary summary page, and print it, but cannot print
documents within Memo.

Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10, 2.6.24.3 Kernel, on a Pentium III, 3.0
Ghz.Intel D865GBF Motherboard 1.5 GB DDR400 SDRAM, NEC DVD/CD-+RW, Lit-
on CD-RW, Palm Zire 31

What I expected to happen: I click document inside memo, a new screen
with my information comes up, and I print it to my printer.

What happened instead: I clicked on document, and window opened without
a print icon, or any other way to print information inside document
directly.

Workaround: Copy & Paste to OpenOffice.

[Bug 197883] [NEW] Include smart-notifier in Ubuntu by default

2008-03-02 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 197881 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/197881

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop

The "smart-notifier" package (and its dependency, smartmontools) should
be included and configured in Ubuntu by default. These packages monitor
the S.M.A.R.T. health reporting system that is present in most hard
drives and can notify the user of impending failures before they occur.
This is a valuable subsystem to have and setting it up should not be
left up to the user.

Note that for this to happen, changes will probably be necessary to the
packages themselves: smartd's configuration is not very automatable, and
smart-notifier's UI is not very Ubuntuish.

[Bug 149252] Re: Shift Switcher preview vanishes after a few seconds

I'm also having the this exact problem, but ONLY after I switch
workspaces - it works fine with reflection until then. Disabling shift
switcher reflection fixes it. I can also run "compiz --replace" to get
it to work until I switch workspaces again. I'm curious if it is this
way (after workspace switch) for anyone else

I have Intel GMA x3100 graphics on a Dell 1420 series Inspiron laptop.

Is it not the priority for an LTS version to have stable packages with

The frog file is a png and is in

There is a carcassone starter but it is at

/usr/share/tuxpaint/starters/carcassone-back.svg. There has never been a

[Bug 164175] Re: partition disappeared after reboot from desktop, Places and computer

2008-03-02 Thread stormzen
I'm going to jump in on this bug. I have an external hard-drive whose
partitions show up on the desktop when I first log into my computer, but
they disappear (seemingly) randomly. When they do disappear, they don't
show up in mount, either.

( I am using LVM for my system hard drives. )

There is one other factor:

All of the partitions that disappear are also shared through samba.

This time around, the first indication that something was wrong was that
I couldn't see the shares in nautilus / browsing network:///. Then I
realized that they were just gone, all around.

Since the information isn't written to fstab, I wasn't sure which mount
points I needed to use to remount them. I got the shares back using
sudo gnome-mount /dev/ (device listed in output, above)... but ended up
with two icons for one of my volumes... still.. it was better than
logging out.

Please let me know if you need additional information about this bug.

[Bug 197865] Re: Zoom out button in plasma should be removed for hardy

2008-03-02 Thread Harald Sitter
Thanks for your report.
Actually I think there is a possability that this feature gets removed by KDE
itself, since it _is_ confusing and rather useless. If this does not happen, I
will take care that it gets removed in hardy.

[Bug 197876] [NEW] Hardy Heron: Compiz borders not displaying/displaying incorrectly

2008-03-02 Thread socceroos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Window borders (with desktop effects automatically enabled) are rendered
incorrectly frequently.

Sometimes I can't even see the minimise-maximise-close buttons. -
border01.png

Sometimes the window borders have a little bit of colour - but it
doesn't cover the whole window border. - border02.png

This would be very confusing/distressing to a new/n00b user!

I use Hardy Heron Alpha with all the latest updates as at 3rd March 2008
4:51pm AEST.

I don't see any such problem on my end. Make sure that in smb.conf
you have "writable = yes" or "read only = no" (you can set this with
the Shared Folders utility in GNOME), and that other users have
Unix-style permissions to write to the shared folder (you can set this
in nautilus by selecting "Properties" in the right click menu, if you
don't use chmod)

This question remains: is putting "map to guest = Bad User" into the
[global] section of the default smb.conf an acceptable solution to
this bug? If there is a problem, it should be discussed in this bug,
and if there is no problem, it's a quick fix, and the bug should be
fixed by now.

[Bug 197867] [NEW] kde-guidance mountconfig has unneeded call to kdedesigner

2008-03-02 Thread Scott Kitterman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-guidance

In mountconfig/fuser.py it imports kdedesigner, but never uses it. As a
result, if pyqtconfig is not available, it will crash. To work around
this problem, Kubuntu moved pyqtconfig from python-qt-dev to python-qt3.
This causes packages that build depend on python-qt-dev, but not python-
qt3 that need pyqtconfig to FTBFS (Eric is an example of this).

This is kde-guidance problem and the Py QT3 work around is known to
affect Eric. Other packages that build-dep on both python-qt-dev and
python-qt3 in Kubuntu should be checked:

kde-guidance
python-kde3
pyqwt
pyqwt3d
pyqwt5

[Bug 197861] Re: No APM on Hardy's kernel

2008-03-02 Thread Shirish Agarwal
I think this is confirmed. I'm trying the same thing on an assembled
box.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dmesg | grep apm
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ apm
No APM support in kernel

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ uname -a
Linux Mugglewille 2.6.24-11-generic #1 SMP Fri Feb 29 22:08:31 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg -l|grep linux-image-2.6.24-11
ii linux-image-2.6.24-11-generic 2.6.24-11.17
Linux kernel image for version 2.6.24 on x86/x86_64

I haven't got the second one as I did an autoclean as well.

Don't remember if apm was there on feisty or not.
