[Bug 197900] [NEW] Frequent total system freeze since Fri 29-Feb-08 security update
Public bug reported: I have been using Ubuntu 7.10 for quite a while now without any problems however since Friday 29-Feb-2008 I am getting frequently complete system lookups (keyboard led locks, and mouse too) especially when nautilus/x11 is trying to start (but it is that it is more frequent at boot, it also happen later at any time). Now I suspect this is due to a security update that was done on Friday. On my machine I also have Ubuntu 7.04 (no auto update) and Windows XP and they still works perfectly fine (which tends to rule out a hardware fault). So I have cancelled most of Friday's update and since the machine seems to work fine (has been ok for a day whilst before I could not work more than 10 minutes without having a crash). So updates I have rolled back are as follow: libnautilus-extension1 7.1 -> 7 libvolume-id0 17 -> 16 nautilus 7.1 -> 7 nautilus-data 7.1 -> 7 I was also planning to undo "udev" and "volumeid" but synaptic would not let me do it (and so far it seems ok anyway). Now I am sorry that I cannot provide any further details on the crashes themselves as, when they occurs, I really lose complete control of the machine and nothing appears in the logs :-( At present, reverting these updates seems to have done the trick but I also had to block the automatic update... Did anyone had something similar??? Any suggestion on how to try and gather more info on the crash itself (although I suspect it is going to be hard anyway due to the way the machine crash). ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Frequent total system freeze since Fri 29-Feb-08 security update https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/197900 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 197892] [NEW] ATA exception upon starting smartd, breaking drive until next reboot
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.24 I have an up-to-date i686 gutsy install on a Dell XPS M1710 laptop (except that I have the hardy kernel and a few other hardy packages). I have two SATA drives: one internal and one external (connected via an eSATA-to-ExpressCard adapter). Today I installed smartmontools to monitor my drives and started it with the default configuration. Upon it attempting to inspect my external drive (which was connected but not, I think, mounted), the kernel ATA driver spat out an exception message and automatically unloaded the drive (i.e., it disappeared from /dev). Re- connecting the drive and turning it on and off (which is possible since it was external) did not get it back (the attempts produced no new output from dmesg at all). However, after a reboot it was back and working normally. I have attached my syslog from when the problem occurred. The output for it starts at "Problem creating device name scan list". Also, this may not be relevant, but after re-connecting/restarting the drive failed to fix things (but before rebooting), I tried to suspend (twice) for an unrelated reason, but that failed because the ATA driver couldn't shut down the external drive. This means that the driver was at least still aware of that drive. The output for that can also be seen in my syslog. I'll be the first to admit that this is an obscure bug and probably also upstream, and to make matters worse I have been unable to reproduce it. Note that smartd does not work with my drives in the default configuration (-d sat is required), but what I am reporting is specifically the fact that the kernel got into a broken state. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- ATA exception upon starting smartd, breaking drive until next reboot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/197892 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I don't see any such problem on my end. Make sure that in smb.conf you have "writable = yes" or "read only = no" (you can set this with the Shared Folders utility in GNOME), and that other users have Unix-style permissions to write to the shared folder (you can set this in nautilus by selecting "Properties" in the right click menu, if you don't use chmod) On 3/2/08, Sebastien Bacher <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Anyway this discussion is out topic for the bug and no really constructive, > let's stop it there This question remains: is putting "map to guest = Bad User" into the [global] section of the default smb.conf an acceptable solution to this bug? If there is a problem, it should be discussed in this bug, and if there is no problem, it's a quick fix, and the bug should be fixed by now. -- the security parameter must be set to share, not user, in smb.conf - Smb/Gnome sharing broken https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/32067 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 194052] Re: hal not reading information about sysfs batteries correctly
The ~3 packages seem to work for me (amd64). g-p-m provides a (seemingly) accurate power history graph, the battery charge % is correctly reported, and it notices when I change from battery to AC and back again. [Bug 197867] [NEW] kde-guidance mountconfig has unneeded call to kdedesigner
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kde-guidance In mountconfig/fuser.py it imports kdedesigner, but never uses it. As a result, if pyqtconfig is not available, it will crash. To work around this problem, Kubuntu moved pyqtconfig from python-qt-dev to python-qt3. This causes packages that build depend on python-qt-dev, but not python- qt3 that need pyqtconfig to FTBFS (Eric is an example of this). This is kde-guidance problem and the Py QT3 work around is known to affect Eric.
