[Bug 191451] Re: Bad default choices for Vietnamese installation

2008-03-12 Thread Jean Christophe André
[More Hardy Alpha6 Vietnamese support tests]

It seems it's not exactly what I supposed... I see a strange GTK behavior here!
When running a gnome-terminal, the default GTK input method is system and
VIQR is *not* activated.
When running ubiquity, the default GTK input method is also system but the
VIQR input method *is* activated.
You can see the difference between input results in the attached screenshot.
So here I'm puzzled... I have no clue why the behavior is different between
ubiquity or gnome-terminal, both being GTK compliant applications AFAIK...

The good news is that GTK doesn't seem to eat characters anymore: when
I type a final 'e' and then press Enter I still get the 'e' in the
input. But still the VIQR input method being running by default is an
unwanted feature. Let's give another example: people typing a password
containing e^ will get it entered as e^ in console (or any other
not-through-GTK input) but as ê in GTK, leading to password problems
confusion.

[Bug 194458] Re: Main Inclusion Report for thinkfinger

2008-03-12 Thread Scott James Remnant
While it does have the problem of allowing the user to modify their own
fingerprints, I think that the alternatives result in code that isn't
sufficiently tested or stable enough to support for an LTS.

I think we should accept thinkfinger for hardy, and migrate to a better
fprint-based solution for 8.10 when we've had time to do more testing.
The fingerprint files are migratable.

Re: [Bug 201226] Re: Please sponsor liferea 1.4.13 (main) into Hardy

2008-03-12 Thread Emilio Pozuelo Monfort
1.4.14 has just been released with a few more bug fixes, could we get
that one?

Version 1.4.14 (Stable)

* Fixes SQL join when matching item metadata
  in a search folder.
* Added workaround for negative search folder
  unread count values.
* Fixes Debian #469245: hanging on cache migration
from 1.0 when copying deprecated named pipe
  new_subscription (reported by Oliver Berger).

I believe the last one is important for Dapper-Hardy upgrades, so that the
migration path for ~/.liferea - ~/.liferea_1.4 works fine.

[Bug 187130] Re: [Hardy Feature Request] Add support for biometric fingerprint reader

2008-03-12 Thread Scott James Remnant
Thinkfinger has been uploaded.

While this has some issues (it stores the fingerprint in the home
directory), it's generally more stable then fprint at this point.
Happily the fingerprint files are easy to migrate, so for 8.10 we could
switch to an fprint-based solution and migrate the user across.

[Bug 200984] Re: svn mplayer - troubel with mencoder

2008-03-12 Thread Gert Kulyk
No it is not, because ubuntu bugs only concern packages provided by
ubuntu.

Checkistall is only a workaround, it will _never_ produce packages that
are comparable and compatible to real debian/ubuntu packages. In your
case, you've most likely produced a single mplayer-package containing
all required libs, binaries and documentation. Checkinstall will never
split an installed project into seperate packages.

For questions concerning how to make use of the tools used for packaging
in debian/ubuntu, take a look at e.g.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PackagingGuide/

[Bug 189185] Re: Thinkpad X61 hangs when removing from dock

2008-03-12 Thread Juha Tiensyrjä
OK, I found out the real reason why it crashes:
http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg13151.html

So, when I have a DVD drive in my docking station's ultrabay and I boot
while the laptop is in the dock, it correctly recognises the drive, but
crashes when pressing the undock button. If the drive is taken away from
the ultrabay and the laptop is booted in the dock, no crash happens.

Perhaps we need to catch the ACPI event generated by the undock button,
and do something with it to the drive in the ultrabay?

[Bug 201330] Re: Need to whitelist ATI radeon IGP 340M

2008-03-12 Thread Sergio Zanchetta
** Description changed:

I have an ATI radeon IGP 340M (Chip ID 1002:4337) that works really nice
with the open source ati driver and compiz ALWAYS worked very well
  since Feisty.

According to a problem on some ati cards as reported in Bug #197135,
- open source ati driver is going to be blacklisted for compiz in Hardy.
+ open source ati driver is going to be blacklisted for compiz in Hardy
+ (on laptops).

My card is not supported by fglrx (5 years old card) so I won't be able
to use compiz by default in Hardy.

To sum up, this card need to be whitelisted in order to use compiz by
default in Hardy, as it always did before.

[Bug 201218] Re: [Hardy] Seeking is broken in Rhythmbox

2008-03-12 Thread Sebastian Keller
I think I found the package which introduced the problem:
gst-plugins-ugly0.10 (0.10.7-2)

I installed:
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/g/gst-plugins-ugly0.10/gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly_0.10.7-1_i386.deb

And now I can no longer reproduce the problem.

Maybe this is related to the mp3 timestamp-patch introduced in 0.10.7-2

[Bug 129910] Re: Blank ttys when using vesafb (vga=xxx)

2008-03-12 Thread Felix Miata
Ben Collins wrote It's way to [sic] unstable,

That's utter nonsense. In all the years I've been using Linux since
sometime last century, my kernel lines have not had vga= parameters only
briefly when necessary to overcome brokenness such as this. With the
exception of this bug, such periods without have always been very brief,
days or at most two weeks. Six months of a choice between being stuck
with the exclusively Ubuntu only 80x25 possible on the ttys, or using
any of the many major distros not suffering this ridiculous bug instead
is inexcusable. Fedora 8 doesn't have this. Etch doesn't have this. SUSE
10.3 doesn't have this. Mandriva 2008 doesn't have this. Knoppix doesn't
have this. OTOH, every release of Ubuntu since my first exposure to it
over 3 years ago has given me consoles that are different from what just
works elsewhere. Whatever it is that Ubuntu does differently with
framebuffer from what other distros do is simply broken, and should be
changed to conform to what seems to be bulletproof everywhere else.

[Bug 198357] Re: oops in Hardy Heron -server kernel, with md-lvm-xfs-nfs4

2008-03-12 Thread Colin King
Hi Florin,

The good news is that this is not a kernel bug. The reason for the
kernel messages is that the Ethernet driver tried to allocate some
buffer space and the zoned buddy allocator could not find any free
memory for this - so it dumped out a stack trace and a summary of memory
subsystem to alert you of the fact.

Such reports occur when the zoned buddy allocator memory becomes heavily
fragmented through use and a contiguous block of memory cannot be
allocated, for example, allocation of large receive buffers for Ethernet
Jumbo Frames.

From your log, the machine was only running for ~13 days, which isn't
that long, so it's surprising that fragmentation occurred so quickly.

This problem can be reduced or eliminated by changing the amount of
available memory for receive buffer allocation, by increasing
/proc/sys/vm/min_free_kbytes, as you have done.

From this point, I shall mark this as Won't Fix as it is not a kernel
bug, but a kernel configuration tweak.

[Bug 201406] [NEW] Totem-mozilla always overrides VLC plugin in Firefox

2008-03-12 Thread F-3582
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

It seems that totem-mozilla (2.22.0-0ubuntu1) can now identify as the
vlc plugin for Firefox. Which is nice if you don't want to install that
VLC plugin separately.

However, if you do want to use the VLC plugin for content that request
it (e.g. http://www.zdf.de/ZDFmediathek/content/9602?inPopup=true) Totem
will always override it, even if it is installed.

There should be some routine checking for the presence of that VLC
plugin (might also affect the Realplayer plugin, because Totem handles
that, as well) and disabling its VLC-emulating capabilities, if a native
VLC plugin is found. Because if it's there, there has to be a reason for
it...

Hi Julian,

It seems interesting that the timer information in timer_stats.log seems
to show a big difference between the timer events occurring in the

own metrics in /proc/timer_stats more than powertop at this point.
Could powertop be recording some events incorrectly?

[Bug 200984] Re: svn mplayer - troubel with mencoder

2008-03-12 Thread Henrikx
THX for Link.
I will study.
In Ubuntu community (en/de) is no ducumentation about, how to create two debs.
Mplayer and mencoder.

Germa Wiki:

Ubuntu and svn Mplayer Version are not Compatible! Ubuntu mencoder must be
uninstalled.
Bug or feature ?

Why can it not be made compatible?
Itś only in Ubuntu.

Thank you for answers and for your patience!
I don want to nerve you.
And sorry for my broken English.

Henrik

[Bug 199215] Re: [hardy] regression SD card does not mount Dell Inspiron 9300

2008-03-12 Thread Colin King
I've looked at the driver code and the error -123 indicates that the
driver believes that the SD card is no longer present - which is clearly
not the case.

Do you have any other SD cards to test this with? This way we may be
able to see if the problem occurs with the just SD card or the SD
reader.

I suspect it's some kind of timing issue, causing the current driver not
to work with your particular hardware. There are quite a few differences
between the Hardy driver and the Gutsy version, so there are many
possible reasons it may not work correctly.

Also, as per the kernel team's bug policy, can you please attach the
following information:

* uname -a  uname-a.log
* cat /proc/version_signature  version.log
* sudo lspci -vvnn  lspci-vvnn.log

Thanks again and we appreciate your help and feedback.

[Bug 194214] Re: Keys get stuck down (another kernel option to test)

2008-03-12 Thread Per Baekgaard
I got this bug when I upgraded my AMD64/Dual Core (Asus MB/NVidia grpx)
system to 7.10. It wasn't there before in the previous release.

After some fiddling around and reading the threads here, I tested
various options for getting rid of it. I eventually added the
ec_intr=0 option to the kernel, and now the keys no longer get stuck.
I have been stable now without this bug for quite some time.

I do get an occasional system freeze, though, from time to time, but I
don't think those two bugs are related.

[Bug 156055] Re: Windows shows on several workspaces

2008-03-12 Thread Michael.F
I noticed also the described behavior in hardy (up-to-date). It seems
that this wrong behavior is related to the place plugin. Therefore I
will add compiz-plugins to the affected packages. Furthermore I noticed
different effects that depend on places options. I will try to explain
this...

Scenario: hardy (up-to-date), desktop effects: normal, plugin options
managed through ccsm as described below.

1. Place enabled, Workaround option enabled (default compiz setting in hardy)
- open nautilus (e.g. home folder)
- maximise nautilus (window doesn't overlap)
- close nautilus
- open nautilus again (window doesn't overlap, still maximised)
- close nautilus
- open nautilus again (window overlaps, _not_ maximised anymore)

2. Place enabled, Workaround option disabled
- open nautilus (e.g. home folder)
- maximise nautilus (window doesn't overlap)
- close nautilus
- open nautilus again (window doesn't overlap, still maximised)
- close nautilus
- open nautilus again (window doesn't overlap, still maximised)
- deactivate maximise (window overlaps)

3. Place disabled
- open nautilus (e.g. home folder)
- maximise nautilus (window doesn't overlap)
- close nautilus
- open nautilus again (window doesn't overlap, still maximised)
- close nautilus
- open nautilus again (window doesn't overlap, _not_ maximised anymore)

Result:
- Places (+Workaround) is needed to remember window positions (e.g.
startup-position of pidgin)
- Places (+Workaround) doesn't remember the window-state (normal/maximised)
correctly and seems to be responsible for window-drifting

Perhaps someone could test my described scenario (also with other
programs) and play with the place plugin.

The package xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.2.0.90-2ubuntu7_amd64.deb worked
fine for you? Do you could post your Xorg.0.log if it worked?

Does it work if you replace the driver intel or vesa with i810 in
xorg.conf?

If the i810 driver works fine I guess it is the best to push it upstream.
There are two possibilities: You could open a bug report and attach the needed
information (http://intellinuxgraphics.org/how_to_report_bug.html) or you
provide it here and we create it for you.

Btw. please add the line

[Bug 194214] Re: Keys get stuck down

2008-03-12 Thread Fred
I posted to LKML about this.

Replies that I got;
* I had the same problem back in the 2.6.16 to 2.6.20 days (no dynticks). The
only solution I found was to get rid of gnome. Since then I've been happily
running with xfce.
Can anyone confirm or deny that this is re-producable in other desktop
environments than GNOME?

* Very probably this is due to broken way how X themselves implement
auto-repeat, instead of using kernel-provided auto-repeat functionality. I
guess you are not able to reproduce this problem in the console, but only X,
right?
Yeah, I've never seen this problem in the console. Anyone have?

* AFAIK it's a problem with X being confused by scheduler behavior
(which is not necessarily wrong).

 Hi Felix,

 Felix [2008-03-12 0:25 -]:

I don't know about the legistation etc, but I can confirm as a
 costarican
that we use the AM/PM format.

Maybe you can find some official documents, government statements,
etc. which use AM/PM and collect some links?

 Thank you!

 Martin

(Just for avoidance of doubt, I believe you, and I applied the patch,
but upstream wants some hard data.)

[Bug 193419] Re: External monitor loss - intel 945

2008-03-12 Thread unggnu

Please post only one problem per bug. Btw. I guess that your report is more a
question also mentioned under Question #26807.

If activating of your external monitor with xrandr after hotplugging
without the option --left-off doesn't work (xrandr --output VGA --auto)
please create another bug report. If the monitor powers on but only have
the wrong resolution it should be already covered through this bug Bug
#158415.
