[Bug 184682] Re: kscreensaver immediately reengages when attempting to connect to the system with VNC

2008-04-30 Thread Michael Marley
Shortly after I discovered this bug, I found that I could work around it
by updating to the version of x11vnc in the backport repository.
Because this version of x11vnc is now in Hardy, I would assume that the
problem does not occur there. Sadly, I cannot test this, as my old
Linux PC broke down, and the laptop I got to replace it, though all of
its hardware was (intentionally) customized for Linux support, does not
work very well with Ubuntu. Therefore, I have had to switch back to
Windows :-(

[Bug 224739] [NEW] upgrade gutsy to hardy failed with initramfs

2008-04-30 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Public bug reported:

I updated gutsy then upgraded (using the icon top right on the scree
that tells you to update) to hardy and was rewarded with a dos like
screen initramfs and I think that is a reduced function file system used
only by boot setup stuff. I was dead in the water. dmesgdmesg.txt and
grep error dmesg.txt did not give any indicators.

I hit esc in grub and selected the gutsy kernel (hardy recovery gave
same problem) and I am running hardy with the gutsy kernel.

My system is about a year old. Asus mother board with AMD64, 1 gig ram,
80 gig HD, not sure on type of HD ide, ata or sata. Oh yes I'm talking
about Ubuntu Hardy Heron 64 bit upgrade as of 3 or 4 days.

To work around this bug delete the file I had you attach from your

[Bug 224168] Re: Breaks in more unionfs use cases

2008-04-30 Thread Loïc Minier
** Description changed:

Apport doesn't work for UME right now due to special casing of the
unionfs mount points. It probably also doesn't work for apps installed
from a live CD as it doesn't handle the read-write mount point either.

This is fixed in the bzr tree for apport in Ubuntu. The fix was to
process a list of mount points and add the missing mount points to it.
The proposed solution of parsing /proc/mounts was deemed too intrusive.
The proper fix is to fix unionfs in l-u-m.

  TEST CASE:
- * For UME: install and enable apport, crash any app e.g. bash -c 'kill -SEGV
$$', notice that no crash dump is created
- * For the live CD: enable apport, install a new package, start and kill the
app with SEGV as above, notive that no crash dump is created
- * Alternatively, run /usr/share/apport/testsuite/test-apport kernel
+ * For UME: install and enable apport, crash any app e.g. bash -c 'kill -SEGV
$$', ls /var/crash and notice that no crash dump is created
+ * For the live CD: enable apport, install a new package, start and kill the
app with SEGV as above, ls /var/crash and notice that no crash dump is created
+ * Alternatively, run /usr/share/apport/testsuite/test-apport kernel;
testsuite should fail

To enable apport, edit /etc/default/apport, set enabled=1, run
  /etc/init.d/apport start.

Potential regressions: no particular regression in sight.

[Bug 173418] Re: [Hardy] NVIDIA cards using vesa driver and low screen resolutions on livecd

2008-04-30 Thread Joep
I have an older NVIDIA card the GeForce4 MX 4000 and have exactly the same bug.
However, when I get the NVIDIA driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.08-pkg2.run) it
will not install as the card is too old and I can only use older (legacy)
drivers.
Does anybody know how to solve this. Of course I find in my X11org.0.log file:
Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found).
But That is not the solution.
Is it possible not to load the glx-extensions or or are they necessary?
I hope somebody can help me out as I have just got a wide-screen 19 monitor
and that's not nice with 800x600!.

1. Hardy: Prepare an update to address the serious bugs (no one appears
to have filed a mailscanner won't work at all bug yet.

a. File such a bug with a patch (see step 3 in procedure in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates for what needs to be in such a
bug). Subscribe me to the bug.
b. I'll take that and prepare an upload. I'll also address the RC bug fix that
caused this bug to be files
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=472489).
c. Once I get that uploaded to hardy-proposed, it will need testing.
d. Once tested it gets released to hardy-updates and we have a working (if old)
mailscanner.

2. Intrepid: Request a sync

a. I'll do that. Once sync's are processed, then it will update
automatically from Debian up to Debian Import Freeze.

3. Hardy part two: Request a backport

Once it's in Intrepid:

a. build and test this version in Hardy.
b. If it works, ask for a backport
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/hardy-backports/+filebug) see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BackportRequestProcess
c. Once it's approved, the archive admins will add it to hardy-backports and
the current version will be available through official Ubuntu repositories for
Hardy.

[Bug 194769] Re: xfce4-terminal window borders / decorations / widgets being incorrectly drawn (xubuntu 8.04)

2008-04-30 Thread james_vanb
Problem is extreme on Dell Latitude CP M233ST with NeoMagic 2160 with
video controler in Hardy. When entering a command in terminal, nothing
shows up. I have to minimize and then maximize the screen and the
command will show or hit enter and hope there are no typos. Screen
appears split with coloring that looks like it has been corrupted.
Terminal virtually unusable. Is there a workaround while this issue is
being looked at? I would hate to have to revert back to Gutsy.

[Bug 222478] Re: share ratio increased when moving torrents in queue

2008-04-30 Thread Adrian Room
This happens for me too. In addition, the increase also occurs when I
pause and unpause torrents.

The amount of increase appears to be proportional to the actual share
ratio. For example, a torrent with an original share ratio of 0.050 will
increase by an additional 0.050 every time one of the buttons is
pressed.

[Bug 207409] Re: [HARDY] xserver-xorg does not auto-configure correctly

2008-04-30 Thread Thomas
Guys, I've got to agree here. I've clean installed xubuntu hardy over
gutsy on a laptop which has used every ubuntu variation since
warty...and cannot get the resolution to work right. Auto config rarely
works on this laptop (via graphics) but I've always been able to get it
to work by tweaking xorg.cong...now there is nothing in xorg.conf to
tweak, and dpkg-reconfigure has been emasculated. I cannot rebuild xorg
from scratch. I didn't keep my gutsy xorg because it has always been a
couple of minutes work to make it function. I have 11 computers running
ubuntu variants in my house, and 20 odd others that I am responsible
for, and this was the first upgrade to Hardy which has now taken hours
of frustration...please fix this and give us back our tools.

[Bug 201711] Re: Apple fn key behavior isn't consistent with what's expected

2008-04-30 Thread Andrew Flegg
Frédéric is creating links between the multiple issues. There's also
some strong arguments in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/201887 for why the
current default behaviour is wrong.

I wrote there, in support of the same arguments eloquently made by
Tommy, Luke, Nicolas and Raphael:

8
Ubuntu isn't OS X, and Apple sell these keyboards as any other keyboard
manufacturer. They are Apple keyboards, not Mac keyboards; therefore trying to
enforce they work like Macs - when they might well not be being used on Mac
hardware, and definitely not OS X - is at least partially incorrect.

It'd be different if the keys were *obviously*
volume/brightness/dashboard/exposé and not F1, F2, F3 etc. However the
hotkeys and the fn keys are given equal prominence.

The third argument is that not all of the keys have special purposes, so
they should do the base action - function keys without a modifier, first
and foremost.

Hirano, since you've already built the packages could you create a PPA
and host them from there in order to have a temporary fix until there is
a new official release of the packages?

Thanks,

[Bug 210373] Re: Broadcom 4306 doesn't work! I cannot connect to any wireless network

2008-04-30 Thread Ricky
I have resolved the problem with my broadcom 4306 card using this guide:

1) sudo gedit /etc/init.d/bcm43xxfix.sh

Write in the file:

 #! /bin/sh

 rmmod b43legacy
 rmmod b43
 rmmod bcm43xx
 rmmod ssb
 modprobe bcm43xx

2) cd /etc/init.d/ sudo chmod 755 bcm43xxfix.sh
3) sudo update-rc.d bcm43xxfix.sh defaults
4) sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

Replace in this file

 # replaced by b43 and ssb.
 blacklist bcm43xx

with

 # replaced by b43 and ssb.
 # blacklist bcm43xx

5) reboot

Let me know if it works also for you

[Bug 204996] Re: Linux kernel 2.6.24-12 lockup

2008-04-30 Thread Joe
@ Robert (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/204996/comments/119)
8 minutes is the fastest I've seen posted. How reproducible is that? This is,
if you do the sames steps after each reboot, does the system crash
consistently and does it crash in 8 minutes or less?

I don't think I've had Hardy go more than 10 minutes in the dozen or so times
I've booted it, either using the live CD or hard-drive install.
What I do does not appear to influence the crash. It's happened while I'm
using Firefox, checking log files or sitting there doing nothing. In the crash
that I posted about above, I'd opened a single-page PDF file (~57k) and
switched back to the Nautilus window I'd opened it from.
If it weren't for Edgy being so stable (I'm posting from it now), I'd swear
it's my hardware.

[Bug 201597] Re: iwl3945 doesn't support ad-hoc networks

2008-04-30 Thread emil_p8
Same problem on a Thinkpad with Kubuntu Hardy Final and iwl4965. I'm
able to connect manually, but then I experience random network-related
hangups: the machine doesn't even respond to sysRq sequences and has
its Caps Lock LED flashing.

Basically, i have to paste each time this sequence:
sudo ifconfig wlan0 downsudo iwconfig wlan0 mode ad-hocsudo ifconfig wlan0
upsudo iwconfig wlan0 essid winetsudo iwconfig wlan0 key XXX sudo route
add default gw 192.168.0.1
since on boot it seems iwlwifi ignores the ad-hoc mode set in
/etc/network/interfaces

Hey ubuntu_demon. Sorry for the huge delay. Hardy Heron 8.04 was
recently released. It would be helpful if you could test the new
release and verify if this is still an issue -

with Hardy installed. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

[Bug 224750] [NEW] rpcb_getport_async in sunrpc can cause oops on Hardy

2008-04-30 Thread HIRANO Takahito
Public bug reported:

The rpcb_getport_async function in the sunrpc module copies the larger memory
area than the allocated on Ubuntu Hardy.
This can cause oops.

This bugs is derived from Linux 2.6.24 in kernel.org.
It seems to be fixed on Linux 2.6.25 in kernel.org by the commit
86d61d8638ddf9cdf87df26c7fa69b2804425fbe.

Re: [Bug 201887] Re: Slim USB Apple Keyboard not working correctly..

2008-04-30 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
2008/4/30, BradwJensen [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

You bought this exact keyboard and this is how this one keyboard is made
 to work. lol

No. I bought this keyboard because it has comfortable keys. And because it
is not some cheap plastic junk like all the keyboards I had before this. I
could not give a rat ass about how it's supposed to work on a mac, this is
Linux, not a mac.

I'm not saying it has to be that way, but it is the original way for
this exact keyboard, and you bought it that way.

I did not buy it that way. I bought it with cash. And it should damn well do
what I expect this to do, and behave like any other keyboard I plug on this
friggin' linux box.

  The thing even works
this way on a mac, I know cos my friend has one. It was made for multi-
media before function keys. Maybe Linux has a bad/old way of using
 keystrokes?

I know that it works like this on macs. I have worked in a mac store just a
few months ago and I sold these things. That's where I bought mine. The mac
software is not centered around the F* keys, but most apps in the
windows/gnome/kde/xfce ecosystem use those keys. Don't give me some argument
about linux not being media centered enough, every other keyboard on the
surface of this earth that I could get my hands on has behaved correctly,
even this one... until now. The keyboard is supposed to interact with apps,
not the apps caving in to the keyboard.

Or maybe Mac is just weird.

It's not weird, it's different. Now, here, this is not a mac; a keyboard,
being apple-branded hardware or not, should behave accordingly to the host
platform.

I'm certainly more rude than I should be here, but attitudes like that in
this thread are really starting to piss me off. Oh sure, just relearn half
of your shortcut techniques, grow a third hand, or buy a different keyboard

[Bug 120866] Re: Error passing command to konsole for execution

2008-04-30 Thread andrew

I can verify that I get the same pty errors for Debian Etch (Konsole 1.6.5
on KDE 3.5.5) using the example...

konsole --noclose -e echo hello

However, the problem is that the command must not be inside quotes (which is
why -e must be the last option).
So this works as expected...

konsole --noclose -e echo hello

This is NOT nice because xterm does allow the command to be enclosed in quotes,
and is therefore more powerful.
For example, both of these work...

xterm -e less fred
xterm -e less fred

This means that you can do things like this to look at the gzipped file
fred.gz in a new window...

xterm -e gunzip -c fred.gz | less

But without the quotes the -e refers only to the gunzip and the output from
the xterm statement is piped into less (not what you want!).
In otherwords, neither of these work as desired (no errors though)...

xterm -e gunzip -c fred.gz | less
konsole -e gunzip -c fred.gz | less

[Bug 55273] Re: inkscape generates no latex formula

2008-04-30 Thread MarnixV
I use Hardy, with Inkscape 0.46. I have the eqtexsvg.py file (version
that was posted by sas on 2008-04-27) in the folder
~/.inkscape/extensions, but now when I want to insert LaTeX code I get
the following message:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File /home/marnix/.inkscape/extensions/eqtexsvg.py, line 28, in module
import inkex, os, tempfile, sys, xml.dom.minidom
ImportError: No module named inkex

What is this module called inkex? Can I find it somewhere and can there
be a reason why I don't seem to have it?

Help much appreciated :)

[Bug 224752] [NEW] desktop refuses any keyboard or mouse input

2008-04-30 Thread jcdutton
Public bug reported:

When one is using the tool to automatically remember wireless passwords, the
first time one tries to access a wireless network, a pop-up box appears asking
for the master key for all wireless passwords.
This conflicts with Network Manager tool.
If one clicks on the network manager tool, a drop down appears showing all
available wireless networks.
If that drop down is displayed, then the pop-up box appears for the master
key, no mouse or keyboard input is possible.
There must be some sort of deadlock.
restarting gdm recovers from this situation, but it logs one out.

[Bug 212315] Re: Page does not render, old tab appears in place

2008-04-30 Thread Li
Althought I cannot replicate your issue on the URL you previously
provided, I do have similar issue on another website: www.wenxuecity.com

Try to open about 10 links from the page into different tabs. Then close
a tab with CTRL-W. You will see the content of the closed TAB does not
disapear. It covers content of the new TAB. Need to scroll the page a
bit to see the whole content of the new TAB.

Switch TAB by clicking on them will result the same problem. It seams to
happen on this particular website only.

[Bug 150333] Re: More magic for Kubuntu

2008-04-30 Thread usr
** Description changed:

GNOME had more lacks than KDE. Ubuntu's developers have solved it, and
the proof of this is that in Ubuntu's 7.10 GNOME already it is not
necessary to open a terminal to configure the system.

For it, I think that now it is the moment to offer a bit more of

in both distributions.
For example: it has been necessary to wait to kubuntu 7.10 to have GDebi-KDE,

[Bug 224480] Re: rkward does not include the stats package

2008-04-30 Thread Cesare Tirabassi
What stats package are you talking about? Can you be more specific about the
binary (or source) name?
Also, there is no rkward (or at least I can't find it) in the cran repo.
Can you try to to remove the packages you have installed from the cran repo and
install the ones from our repo? This should at least tell us if there is
something we ought to do or if it is a problem with a package from the cran
repo.

[Bug 199215] Re: SD card does not mount Dell Inspiron 9300

2008-04-30 Thread Michal Pryc (migi)

I have tested and I/O works fine, so I am not hitting the bug 211668.

[Bug 218386] Re: Evolution crashes when copying an appointment

2008-04-30 Thread dwitkin
Hello. I just wanted to chime in that I am experiencing the same bug. I
did not have this issue under Gutsy... only after I did the upgrade to
Hardy.

I can also confirm that no crash report appears to be created in
/var/crash. This bug is a real pain for me, so if I can be of help in
gathering any other troubleshooting information to help resolve it,
please email me.

Thanks.

[Bug 207409] Re: [HARDY] xserver-xorg does not auto-configure correctly

2008-04-30 Thread 宋远乐
I agree with this bug.
I was a bit surprised when I found just one line in my Section Device, that's
Identifier Configured Video Device
Then I guess x.org has changed some behavior. Although the graphic card is
working, I want to known how x.org manager to 'guess' my driver and options.
I found a GUI setting window (hides in Other - Screens and Graphic) for users
to select a model or select a driver.
Then I 'accidently' choosed intel - i915 driver, cause x.org is running well I
don't really need to choose. Next time I login, I was in low resolution and x
report a error, driver not found! I have to change xorg.conf manually,
especially adding the *one line* I mentioned above, to get X working again.
I beg this should not happen especially to newbies.
