[Bug 173418] Re: [Hardy] NVIDIA cards using vesa driver and low screen resolutions on livecd
Hi All, I just ran into this bug as well in ubuntu 8.04 lspci -nn |grep VGA 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation NV28GL [Quadro4 980 XGL] [10de:0288] (rev a1) no amount of wrangling with nv, nvidia-glx, nvidia-glx-new, or nvidia- glx-legacy would convince the system not to load the "vesa" driver. In the end I worked around this by downloading the linux32 driver from nvidia after removing all nvidia packages but the kernel module (trying to remove nvidia-kernel-common yields a frightening series of suggestions from apt-get). The driver I downloaded, that worked, was: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.05-pkg1.run -- [Hardy] NVIDIA cards using vesa driver and low screen resolutions on livecd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/173418 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I'm sorry but I wiped the drive after the in place upgrade failed. The /var/log/dist-upgrade dir is empty. Since the home directories were mostly retained I thinkt he user "Samstern" had some settings that caused this bug to be automatically filed. I used apt-get to swap the drivers around btw - I do not use the package manager as syntaptic is anoying and add/remove is too simplistic. [Bug 228910] [NEW] Streamline release upgrades, text mode upgrading
Public bug reported: There seem to be many mysteries about the process of release upgrading, which the official documentation should clear up. Is do-release-upgrade ok for desktops? http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardyUpgrades are quiet on this matter. Why is do-release-upgrade a separate, singular command, instead of being integrated with apt-get, aptitude, etc? It doesn't have a man page, which adds to the mystery. Where are users expected to find out documentation about it? I do all my package management from the terminal, and would like to do the same for release upgrade. It can be done in a screen session, it can be easily done over ssh, it is not affected by X freezes/restarts, etc. Besides, it feels weird that a GUI is _required_ for upgrading a desktop system. Is it? The documentation is quiet on this matter too. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UpdateManagerFaq mentions some interesting stuff. Some of that should be explained properly in the official documentation, including the mysterious references to a "release upgrader". Suggestions: 1) The documentation should explain various aspects of the release upgrade process, including how desktops and servers are different (or how they are not). 2) Release upgrading should be integrated into the existing apt tools, with graphical and text interfaces. "aptitude release-upgrade", perhaps? ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Streamline release upgrades, text mode upgrading https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/228910 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 207560] Re: Emacs-snapshot segfaults with org-mode and linum.el
I believe this is a deeper bug, related to having multiple Emacs windows open. When you tab-complete, Emacs usually opens a new window (frame) to show the tab-completion list, and on my box, it segfaults immediately. I poked around a bit, and found that just opening a new window manually (C-x 2) was enough to force a segfault. [Bug 116941] Re: VESA driver should be listed first in chooser
Thank you for reporting this bug and for your efforts to make Ubuntu better. As Xorg has improved this past year, an unfortunate side effect of these improvements is that it has rendered several design assumptions in displayconfig-gtk obsolete. So, starting with Hardy we are no longer putting displayconfig-gtk forth as a primary configuration tool, and are putting our development focus into the Screen Resolution applet. As a result, we do not plan to fix this bug and thus are closing it. [Bug 228892] [NEW] wubi very scary for newbie - UI expectation flaws
Public bug reported: Wubi completely freaked me out - I thought it was killing my windows install (I half-felt it couldn't be, but I don't trust new software and I strongly feared losing my partition). I am an Ubuntu user and this was my first time to install using wubi. My expectation after "installing" wubi was that Ubuntu was now installed. OK, I got the picture on reboot but then there were multiple messages during the installation process (which freaked me) about: * partitioning * formatting * installing Does the wubi install set users expectations correctly before the reboot? Perhaps clearly show during installation wizard what to expect next? Changing the installer to not use such scary language would be cool, but presumably difficult. The messages would certainly not be calming to someone who just wants to try out Ubuntu... There needs to be something to calm down antsy first-time Ubuntu installers when using wubi.
