[Bug 173418] Re: [Hardy] NVIDIA cards using vesa driver and low screen resolutions on livecd

2008-05-09 Thread Sam Stern
Hi All,

I just ran into this bug as well in ubuntu 8.04

lspci -nn |grep VGA
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation NV28GL [Quadro4
980 XGL] [10de:0288] (rev a1)

no amount of wrangling with nv, nvidia-glx, nvidia-glx-new, or nvidia-
glx-legacy would convince the system not to load the "vesa" driver. In
the end I worked around this by downloading the linux32 driver from
nvidia after removing all nvidia packages but the kernel module (trying
to remove nvidia-kernel-common yields a frightening series of
suggestions from apt-get).

The driver I downloaded, that worked, was:

NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.05-pkg1.run

[Bug 228911] [NEW] package libgio-dev conflicts with libglib2.0-dev

2008-05-09 Thread Justin Clift
Public bug reported:

[Bug 38915] Re: Logout proces hangs

2008-05-09 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
(It is only likely to be a gnome-power-manager issue that can be checked
with a new user if you only see limited logout options)

I fear this report is going to attract multiple different bugs which
will be difficult to disentangle.

Pedro:
I think your best bet is to file a new bug report and post a link to your new
bug report here. I would also also report in the new bug whether turning off
desktop effects (when using the intel drivers) by going to System ->
Preferences -> Appearance | Visual Effects and choosing None resolves the issue.

[Bug 228884] Re: package nvidia-glx-dev None [modified: /var/lib/dpkg/info/nvidia-glx-dev.list] failed to install/upgrade: subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 2

2008-05-09 Thread Sam Stern
I'm sorry but I wiped the drive after the in place upgrade failed. The
/var/log/dist-upgrade dir is empty. Since the home directories were
mostly retained I thinkt he user "Samstern" had some settings that
caused this bug to be automatically filed.

I used apt-get to swap the drivers around btw - I do not use the package
manager as syntaptic is anoying and add/remove is too simplistic.

The core problem (not related to this dist upgrade bug) is at:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/173418

let me know if I can provide more information about the past 7.10 setup
that created this bug.

[Bug 228910] [NEW] Streamline release upgrades, text mode upgrading

2008-05-09 Thread Prateek Karandikar
Public bug reported:

There seem to be many mysteries about the process of release upgrading,
which the official documentation should clear up. Is do-release-upgrade
ok for desktops? http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading and
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardyUpgrades are quiet on this
matter. Why is do-release-upgrade a separate, singular command, instead
of being integrated with apt-get, aptitude, etc? It doesn't have a man
page, which adds to the mystery. Where are users expected to find out
documentation about it?

I do all my package management from the terminal, and would like to do
the same for release upgrade. It can be done in a screen session, it can
be easily done over ssh, it is not affected by X freezes/restarts, etc.
Besides, it feels weird that a GUI is _required_ for upgrading a desktop
system. Is it? The documentation is quiet on this matter too.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UpdateManagerFaq mentions some interesting
stuff. Some of that should be explained properly in the official
documentation, including the mysterious references to a "release
upgrader".

Suggestions:
1) The documentation should explain various aspects of the release upgrade
process, including how desktops and servers are different (or how they are not).
2) Release upgrading should be integrated into the existing apt tools, with
graphical and text interfaces. "aptitude release-upgrade", perhaps?

2008-05-09 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Cesar:
Could you paste the output of
cat /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common
into this bug report (no need to attach it as the output should be only 12
lines).

Could you restart the system and go to recovery mode (don't run apt).
Choose that you want a terminal and then run the following:

ls -ra /lib/modules/2.6.24-17-generic/volatile > ls-volatile.txt
sudo modprobe --ignore-install nvidia_new > modprobe.output 2>&1
sudo chown $USER modprobe.output ls-volatile.txt
sudo reboot

And then upload modprobe.output and ls-volatile.txt to this bug report?

[Bug 137541] Re: XFCE crash when running with 2 panels

2008-05-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thank you for reporting this bug and for your efforts to make Ubuntu
better. As Xorg has improved this past year, an unfortunate side effect
of these improvements is that it has rendered several design assumptions
in displayconfig-gtk obsolete. So, starting with Hardy we are no longer
putting displayconfig-gtk forth as a primary configuration tool, and are
putting our development focus into the Screen Resolution applet. As a
result, we do not plan to fix this bug and thus are closing it.

[Bug 228824] Re: nvidia-glx-new must depend on nvidia-kernel

2008-05-09 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Not going to bring it back. The old dependency actually created some
issues, because nvidia-kernel-VER was a virtual package, and there were
several flavours that fulfilled it, and sometimes a wrong modules
package/kernel was chosen.

Blacklisting ssb (in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist) has no effect, the ssb module
gets loaded anyway.
Blacklisting b43, b43legacy and b44 also does not help - this is with bcm43xx
still blacklisted as per default.

[Bug 133909] Re: "Default" location needed; currently blank, looks broken

2008-05-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thank you for reporting this bug and for your efforts to make Ubuntu
better. As Xorg has improved this past year, an unfortunate side effect
of these improvements is that it has rendered several design assumptions
in displayconfig-gtk obsolete. So, starting with Hardy we are no longer
putting displayconfig-gtk forth as a primary configuration tool, and are
putting our development focus into the Screen Resolution applet. As a
result, we do not plan to fix this bug and thus are closing it.

For more background on this change, please see this page:

[Bug 228787] Re: beagle search does not open thundbird any more..

2008-05-09 Thread edrangas
Ok, I'll do that.

But before doing it, I can already add that the problem is not the one I
described yesterday. If I click at the right place, something happens :
the entire .msf is opened in gedit.

I also checked that ThunderBirdBackends.dll is installed. At least the
file is in the /usr/lib/beagle/Backends folder..

[Bug 120910] Re: Work/home monitor profile switching (kubuntu)

2008-05-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thank you for reporting this bug and for your efforts to make Ubuntu
better. As Xorg has improved this past year, an unfortunate side effect
of these improvements is that it has rendered several design assumptions
in displayconfig-gtk obsolete. So, starting with Hardy we are no longer
putting displayconfig-gtk forth as a primary configuration tool, and are
putting our development focus into the Screen Resolution applet. As a
result, we do not plan to fix this bug and thus are closing it.

For more background on this change, please see this page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/DisplayConfigGtk

For this particular feature, the Screen Resolution tool is able to
remember particular hardware configurations and apply settings
accordingly. I've not played with this feature myself, but would
encourage you to test it.

I can confirm this also.

When I click on the menu dialog it renders the wallpaper for that area after
the dialog hides so its like the wallpaper is there somewhere behind that or
something.
I tried to play around with kdm configuration of wallaper and themes and could
not get any background to display.

[Bug 207560] Re: Emacs-snapshot segfaults with org-mode and linum.el

2008-05-09 Thread Leif
I believe this is a deeper bug, related to having multiple Emacs windows
open. When you tab-complete, Emacs usually opens a new window (frame)
to show the tab-completion list, and on my box, it segfaults
immediately. I poked around a bit, and found that just opening a new
window manually (C-x 2) was enough to force a segfault. If anyone knows
where I can get a deb of emacs-snapshot with debugging symbols, I'll try
debugging with that, otherwise I'll just download the source sometime
this weekend, compile it myself, and see what I can get out of that.

Then, in 99video, it uses: "vbetool vbestate restore

[Bug 228892] [NEW] wubi very scary for newbie - UI expectation flaws

2008-05-09 Thread Morris Johns
Public bug reported:

Wubi completely freaked me out - I thought it was killing my windows
install (I half-felt it couldn't be, but I don't trust new software and
I strongly feared losing my partition). I am an Ubuntu user and this
was my first time to install using wubi.

My expectation after "installing" wubi was that Ubuntu was now installed. OK, I
got the picture on reboot but then there were multiple messages during the
installation process (which freaked me) about:
* partitioning
* formatting
* installing

Does the wubi install set users expectations correctly before the
reboot? Perhaps clearly show during installation wizard what to expect
next?

Changing the installer to not use such scary language would be cool, but
presumably difficult. The messages would certainly not be calming to
someone who just wants to try out Ubuntu... There needs to be something
to calm down antsy first-time Ubuntu installers when using wubi.

Cheers

[Bug 228893] [NEW] some buttons repeating previous card

2008-05-09 Thread dennyhalim.com
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: childsplay

the flashcard games which show animals depends on the keyboard button we
pressed:
when we press any of these buttons: a / u / j
instead of showing animals which start with those letters, it's only repeating
the last animal shown.

[Bug 163544] Re: tracker search tool shows no results

2008-05-09 Thread Vincenzo Ciancia
I reindexed twice after installing hardy (and after having deleted any
tracker config file). Then tracker worked for me nicely for a month or
so. Yesterday it was deadlocked and I had to kill trackerd. I don't know
why it was deadlocked (maybe related to new gvfs and fuse mounts?)
however after having killed tracker, even after a reboot, the only
results shown are for e-mails. I am now reindexing.
