[Bug 85621] Re: cryptsetup installation hanging during configuration

2008-05-27 Thread marararam
the bug is still not fixed and broke my upgrade to 8.04 hardy.
After installing a fresh new hardy both the fresh install worked and the
upgrade worked, too.
I suspect that a second swap partition was causing the problems, as this is the
only thing I changed in the old system.

[Bug 229043] Re: System freezes when login out

2008-05-27 Thread Daniel R.
Hello,

I experimented this bug with Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy, too. Now I'm using
Debian Testing (Lenny) and also have the same - or quite similar - bug
(see: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=482819 ).

Just for completeness: I have performed several more tests, and in some
cases now I also suffer the freeze when switching to VT (CTRL+ALT+F1),
specially if I do it soon (less than 1 min ?) after entering my gnome
session.

I guess it may be in fact a DRI related problem, however I do NOT bet on
it. Please tell if adding the following to your (original auto-
configured xorg.conf) exacerbates the problem:

Section DRI
Mode0666
EndSection

(It seemed in my case, but I'm not sure).

On the other hand, test if this limits the problem (once again, to your
original xorg.conf):

Section Module
Disable glx
Disable dri
EndSection

(It seems it limits it in my case? - not quite sure either)

In addition, I have to say that in my Debian Lenny, package libgl-mesa-
dri was not installed by default. After installing it I removed some
warning messages in my Xorg.0.log, but with little variation in
behaviour (I dare to say that crashes when switching to console started
after that??).

Just another remote possibility: my laptop also has a WIFI ipw2200
interface. I think I have noticed higher X crash probability when
Network Manager applet cannot connect to my wireless network ?.

Ah, I also have the console vesa framebuffer enabled, by adding the
vga=788 parameter to my kernel boot.

Anyway, as this is all quite random, I am not sure at all of anything.

Regards,

[Bug 219393] Re: ich9R raid array not detected

2008-05-27 Thread Phillip Susi
Ok, because libata is loaded as a module rather than built into the
kernel, you have to add the line:

options libata ignore_hpa=0

to /etc/modprobe.d/libata-options. After adding the line, you will need
to run sudo update-initramfs -u.

If you are booting from the livecd, then you need to add break=top to
the kernel command line and when you get to the prompt, type:

echo options libata ignore_hpa=0 /etc/modprobe.d/libata-options
exit

[Bug 235326] [NEW] regular segfaults with .gvfs access

2008-05-27 Thread Gavin Hamill
Public bug reported:

Version: 0.2.4-0ubuntu1

I had great hopes for today's update in hardy-proposed given this
changelog entry Fix fuse locking and file handle life-cycle issues
that were causing frequent crashes. Alas even after a reboot, the
gvfs-fuse-daemon is still very unstable:

[ 176.775971] gvfs-fuse-daemo[6134]: segfault at 0304 eip b7cb2de0
esp b49fe6d4 error 4

which leaves this in /home/gdh/

d? ? ?? ?? .gvfs

Reproducing the crash is easy. Just copy files up and down from a remote
smb share. I can never manage more than 3 up+down copies before it
crashes. Simply reading files from the remote share is 'quite reliable'
- e.g. I can safely unrar gigabytes of data. It's a mix of read/write
that's the killer

This is purely the gvfs-fuse daemon... if I use Nautilus to perform the
same work on smb:// locations, it works flawlessly every time.

I've attached the log of refreshing /home/gdh/.gvfs/plinth on
eddie/gdh, deleting an mpeg, copying an mpeg, and then
copying/overwriting the same mpeg (it crashed 3MB into the overwrite)

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/lib/gvfs$ fusermount -u /home/gdh/.gvfs
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/lib/gvfs$ /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfs-fuse-daemon -d
/home/gdh/.gvfs 2/tmp/gvfs.log

Please look into this - it makes the fuse daemon useless :(

I tried to find out from a while and even tried to compile sources (kdepin
3.5.9) : again kmail, does not compile ; error message is
Pas de règle pour fabriquer la cible « kmail-3.5-filter-icons.pl », nécessaire
pour « all-am ». Arrêt.
translated : No rule to make target « kmail-3.5-filter-icons.pl », needed for
all-am. stopped.

It's like this file is missing from package or some other missing (from upgrade
?). Don't understand and I am not really programmer, just user with time small
experience of ubuntu system gathered.
I prefer using Kontact instead of evolution or thunderbird for its integration
and more specifically for its connectivity with egroupware I use on my server.

Would it have of course any bad interaction with KDE4 (I tried to remove
and put back, no impact).

Thank you for support, just a small light ? An other forum I would have
missed ?

[Bug 235327] [NEW] ubuntu-desktop recommends linux-headers-generic

2008-05-27 Thread lucatrv
Public bug reported:

ubuntu-desktop should not recommend linux-headers-generic, since not everyone
use that kernel.
For instance, since I run ubuntu inside a vmware virtual machine, I use the
linux-virtual kernel instead of the linux-generic kernel. So for me the
linux-headers-generic package is useless, and should be substituted with the
linux-headers-virtual package.
I think ubuntu-desktop should recommend ONE among linux-headers-* packages
(which could be for instance linux-headers-generic, linux-headers-virtual,
linux-headers-server, linux-headers-xen and so on...)
In other words, installing either of these packages should satisfy the
ubuntu-desktop recommendation.

[Bug 228146] Re: Closing chat dialog in Psi closes the whole Psi

2008-05-27 Thread Karsten W. Rohrbach
Correction: The package from intrepid just does not expose the crashes.
The icon in the notification area is still fragmented after running Psi
some time. The fragmentation is not deterministic, but varies in
patterns and time of occurence. So backporting intrepid's version is not
a real fix.

[Bug 150888] Re: nm-applet not refresh networks

2008-05-27 Thread rich
I have noticed this problem since I switched from Feisty to Gutsy. I do
not suspend my computer, but just close the lid (it goes blank) and go
somewhere else (ie a cafe) and open back up, the old wireless
connections are still showing. They still show (and nm-applet tries to
connect to) the old no-longer available connections for, well I don't
know exactly, but a long time. I normally just turn off/on the switch
on the side of the laptop, but it still seems to take a while to
refresh.

The syslog may show that I attempted a manual refresh with the command
iwlist eth1 scan. I don't know if this actually did anything, since
nm-applet had already updated (after I was sitting in the cafe for about
10 minutes).

It would be nice if there was a manual refresh button, along with a
setting to determine how often nm-applet is refreshed.

regards,
Rich

The best solution is if we can set this conditionally at run-time,
depending on the contents of /proc/cpuinfo. I suggest to put this in a
file /etc/X11/Xsession.d/65mesa-check-x86-64, which will be sourced at X
session startup, and ship it with a mesa package. That way we can just
drop it once it get fixed in a newer mesa version.

I don't have 64bit hardware and I am not too familiar with the variants,
but I guess something (x64 but not AMD) would be correct? Can
someone wise chime in here, or can those of you who need MESA_NO_ASM
please post your /proc/cpuinfo?

[Bug 235318] Re: Epson Stylus CX3200: 'print self test page' gets no response

Under 'Printer Configuration' the button labeled: 'print self test page'
leads to a popup window reading:

(I would also love to talk to whoever works on this driver to see if we
can improve the quality of the best prints, they are currently
  significantly better printed from windows.)

[Bug 140497] Re: Compiz fusion crashes after activating cube effect

2008-05-27 Thread riseringseeker
I have a very similar problem since I installed 8.04 64bit. If there
are any programs open on the desktop it will crash as soon as I press
the buttons that activate the cube ctrlatlbutton1 or
button1button2, the desktop crashes without the cube ever becoming
visible. If there are no windows displayed on the desktop, either none
open, or minimized, the rotate cube function works perfectly.

I am running 8.04, all current updates, on a System76 Darter Ultra (aka Daru1,
aka white Darter).

2008-05-27 Thread Onkar Shinde
I just noticed that the package was merged and uploaded by Mario. I haven't
checked if he has actually included all the changes in my debdiff. The
changelog doesn't indicate that all the changes have been included.
I hope this was accidental and unintentional.

It is fixed in CVS. We should update to a CVS snapshot for Intrepid.

[Bug 235326] Re: regular segfaults with .gvfs access

2008-05-27 Thread Gavin Hamill
SUCCESS!

Simply by adding '-s' to the gvfs-fuse-daemon arguments (disable multi-
threaded operation) I am able to hammer away with complete reliability!

I do not notice any loss in performance. In the interim, I have renamed
/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfs-fuse-daemon to /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfs-fuse-daemon.real
and put this crappy script at /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfs-fuse-daemon

#!/bin/sh

/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfs-fuse-daemon.real $@ -s

Poor, but It Works For Me. Hopefully the next update of gvfs-fuse will contain
a working binary that doesn't crash.

[Bug 104837] Re: kernel warns BUG: at fs/inotify.c:172 set_dentry_child_flags()

2008-05-27 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Hi Rich,

It doesn't look like the patches have been backported to Hardy (I'll
include the upstream git commit id's below). However, they do appear to
be available in the upcoming Intrepid kernel. Care to maybe give the
Intrepid kernel a test? It was most recently rebased with the upstream
2.6.25 kernel and is currently available in the following PPA:

https://edge.launchpad.net/~kernel-ppa/+archive

If you are not familiar with how to install packages from a PPA
basically do the following . . .

Create the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kernel-ppa.list to include the
following two lines:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernel-ppa/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernel-ppa/ubuntu hardy main

Then run the command: sudo apt-get update

You should then be able to install the linux-image-2.6.25 kernel
package. After you've finished testing you can remove the kernel-
ppa.list file and run 'sudo apt-get update' once more. Please let us
know your results.

And just for reference, the git commit id's and descriptions are as
follows:

commit d599e36a9ea85432587f4550acc113cd7549d12a

Author: Nick Piggin [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Date: Wed Feb 6 01:37:28 2008 -0800

inotify: fix race

There is a race between setting an inode's children's parent
watched flag

when placing the first watch on a parent, and instantiating new
children of

that parent: a child could miss having its flags set by

set_dentry_child_flags, but then inotify_d_instantiate might still
see

!inotify_inode_watched.

The solution is to set_dentry_child_flags after adding the watch.
Locking i

taken care of, because both set_dentry_child_flags and
inotify_d_instantiate

hold dcache_lock and child-d_locks.

commit 0d71bd5993b630a989d15adc2562a9ffe41cd26d

Author: Nick Piggin [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Date: Wed Feb 6 01:37:29 2008 -0800

inotify: remove debug code

The inotify debugging code is supposed to verify that the

DCACHE_INOTIFY_PARENT_WATCHED scalability optimisation does not
result in

notifications getting lost nor extra needless locking generated.

Unfortunately there are also some races in the debugging code. And
it isn't

very good at finding problems anyway. So remove it for now.

The PPA is our official source for getting the latest-and-greatest

http://bazaar-vcs.org/Download, so many people beyond the Bazaar
developers know about it.

But this is a side issue. There is certainly justification for patching
this bug in Hardy itself.

[Bug 235332] [NEW] Wrong email senders and subjects in the message view

Today, I launched evolution (ubuntu hardy heron latest updated on
