[Bug 229043] Re: System freezes when login out
Hello, I experimented this bug with Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy, too. Now I'm using Debian Testing (Lenny) and also have the same - or quite similar - bug (see: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=482819 ). Just for completeness: I have performed several more tests, and in some cases now I also suffer the freeze when switching to VT (CTRL+ALT+F1), specially if I do it soon (less than 1 min ?) after entering my gnome session. I guess it may be in fact a DRI related problem, however I do NOT bet on it. Please tell if adding the following to your (original auto- configured xorg.conf) exacerbates the problem: Section DRI Mode0666 EndSection (It seemed in my case, but I'm not sure). On the other hand, test if this limits the problem (once again, to your original xorg.conf): Section Module Disable glx Disable dri EndSection (It seems it limits it in my case? - not quite sure either) In addition, I have to say that in my Debian Lenny, package libgl-mesa- dri was not installed by default. After installing it I removed some warning messages in my Xorg.0.log, but with little variation in behaviour (I dare to say that crashes when switching to console started after that??). Just another remote possibility: my laptop also has a WIFI ipw2200 interface. I think I have noticed higher X crash probability when Network Manager applet cannot connect to my wireless network ?. Ah, I also have the console vesa framebuffer enabled, by adding the vga=788 parameter to my kernel boot. Anyway, as this is all quite random, I am not sure at all of anything. Ok, because libata is loaded as a module rather than built into the kernel, you have to add the line: options libata ignore_hpa=0 to /etc/modprobe.d/libata-options. After adding the line, you will need to run sudo update-initramfs -u. [Bug 235326] [NEW] regular segfaults with .gvfs access
Public bug reported: Version: 0.2.4-0ubuntu1 I had great hopes for today's update in hardy-proposed given this changelog entry Fix fuse locking and file handle life-cycle issues that were causing frequent crashes. Alas even after a reboot, the gvfs-fuse-daemon is still very unstable: [ 176.775971] gvfs-fuse-daemo[6134]: segfault at 0304 eip b7cb2de0 esp b49fe6d4 error 4 which leaves this in /home/gdh/ d? ? ?? ?? .gvfs Reproducing the crash is easy. Just copy files up and down from a remote smb share. I can never manage more than 3 up+down copies before it crashes. Simply reading files from the remote share is 'quite reliable' - e.g. I can safely unrar gigabytes of data. It's a mix of read/write that's the killer This is purely the gvfs-fuse daemon... if I use Nautilus to perform the same work on smb:// locations, it works flawlessly every time. I've attached the log of refreshing /home/gdh/.gvfs/plinth on eddie/gdh, deleting an mpeg, copying an mpeg, and then copying/overwriting the same mpeg (it crashed 3MB into the overwrite) [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/lib/gvfs$ fusermount -u /home/gdh/.gvfs [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/lib/gvfs$ /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfs-fuse-daemon -d /home/gdh/.gvfs 2/tmp/gvfs.log Please look into this - it makes the fuse daemon useless :( ** Affects: gvfs (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- regular segfaults with .gvfs access https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/235326 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 235327] [NEW] ubuntu-desktop recommends linux-headers-generic
Public bug reported: ubuntu-desktop should not recommend linux-headers-generic, since not everyone use that kernel. For instance, since I run ubuntu inside a vmware virtual machine, I use the linux-virtual kernel instead of the linux-generic kernel. So for me the linux-headers-generic package is useless, and should be substituted with the linux-headers-virtual package. [Bug 150888] Re: nm-applet not refresh networks
I have noticed this problem since I switched from Feisty to Gutsy. I do not suspend my computer, but just close the lid (it goes blank) and go somewhere else (ie a cafe) and open back up, the old wireless connections are still showing. They still show (and nm-applet tries to connect to) the old no-longer available connections for, well I don't know exactly, but a long time. I normally just turn off/on the switch on the side of the laptop, but it still seems to take a while to refresh. The syslog may show that I attempted a manual refresh with the command iwlist eth1 scan. I don't know if this actually did anything, since nm-applet had already updated (after I was sitting in the cafe for about 10 minutes). [Bug 104837] Re: kernel warns BUG: at fs/inotify.c:172 set_dentry_child_flags()
Hi Rich, It doesn't look like the patches have been backported to Hardy (I'll include the upstream git commit id's below). However, they do appear to be available in the upcoming Intrepid kernel. Care to maybe give the Intrepid kernel a test? It was most recently rebased with the upstream 2.6.25 kernel and is currently available in the following PPA: https://edge.launchpad.net/~kernel-ppa/+archive If you are not familiar with how to install packages from a PPA basically do the following . . . Create the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kernel-ppa.list to include the following two lines: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernel-ppa/ubuntu hardy main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernel-ppa/ubuntu hardy main Then run the command: sudo apt-get update You should then be able to install the linux-image-2.6.25 kernel package. After you've finished testing you can remove the kernel- ppa.list file and run 'sudo apt-get update' once more. Please let us know your results. And just for reference, the git commit id's and descriptions are as follows: commit d599e36a9ea85432587f4550acc113cd7549d12a Author: Nick Piggin [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Wed Feb 6 01:37:28 2008 -0800 inotify: fix race There is a race between setting an inode's children's parent watched flag when placing the first watch on a parent, and instantiating new children of that parent: a child could miss having its flags set by set_dentry_child_flags, but then inotify_d_instantiate might still see !inotify_inode_watched. The solution is to set_dentry_child_flags after adding the watch. Locking i taken care of, because both set_dentry_child_flags and inotify_d_instantiate hold dcache_lock and child-d_locks. commit 0d71bd5993b630a989d15adc2562a9ffe41cd26d Author: Nick Piggin [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Wed Feb 6 01:37:29 2008 -0800 inotify: remove debug code The inotify debugging code is supposed to verify that the DCACHE_INOTIFY_PARENT_WATCHED scalability optimisation does not result in notifications getting lost nor extra needless locking generated.
