The problem is that we have a very real risk of regression for users who
have static xorg.conf, and still no clear understanding of what the reasons
are that necessitated the removal of the symlink; i.e., we have the
statement that it broke LTSP, but on the other hand we don't have any logs
that show what broke, we have a statement of the X maintainer that it
shouldn't have broken, and we have Oliver's tests which show it didn't break
for him.

Can we please pinpoint what's different between the systems where it broke
for you, and the system where Oliver found that it worked fine with the
symlink? When it appeared that the symlink broke the use of the driver for
all or most users, I was willing to allow this as an SRU; now it appears
that others who have tested the package can't reproduce the problem, which
both lowers the benefit of the SRU (since it's not broken for everyone) and
increases the severity of the regression (since users who have Driver "amd"
set don't necessarily have unusable systems).

Oh yes, that would be fine with me; I don't understand why the compat
symlink wasn't put there in the first place. If you think that's the best
option, I can do an upload of this tomorrow.

[Bug 218439] Re: CPU load randomly hits 100%; XMPP random reconnects

2008-06-28 Thread mavosaure
I've got similar problems :

- CPU came up to 100% untill I kill pidgin
- this problem affects only XMPP (Gmail in fact) account. For MSN, WLM (via
msn-pecan), Yahoo, there's no pb.
- sometimes, it works fine, but in many cases, it failes

Description of the bug :
- CPU came up to 100% untill I kill pidgin
- Tray icon disapear, leavin only a empty place.
- if pidgin window is not minimized, it can't be refresh

Workaround :
 - just kill and try again... if you find better...

Debug-logs :
I tried to prompt a ot of debug log for pidgin. I don't see any critical
message but I'm not developper or hacker.
At the beginning of the logs, I can read :
(23:30:35) dbus: Failed to get connection: Failed to execute
dbus-launch to autolaunch D-Bus session

I founded an explanation here
(http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/DbusHowto#TroubleshootingD-Bus), but I'm not
able to understand what to do. I just can see that the entionned line :
   dbus: okkk
is not in my debug-log.

DistroRelease: Xubuntu 8.04
ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/pidgin
Package: pidgin 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2
PackageArchitecture: i386
Kernel : 2.6.24-19-generic, 2.6.24-18-generic and maybe 16 and 17... I can't be
sure.

[Bug 226197] Re: visor module broken in Ubuntu 8.04 LTS's kernel (2.6.24-16)

2008-06-28 Thread sordna
Tom, you are right, the visor kernel module can by bypassed if you use the
libusb library instead.
I got this to work after I downloaded the pilot-link sources and reading the
README.libusb doc.
First I installed "apt-get install libusb-dev" although I don't think it was
absolutely necessary.
The pilot-link sources also come with a 60-libpisock.rules file that needs to
be placed into
/etc/udev/rules.d/ followed by a reboot so it's read by the system.
After that, the command "pilot-xfer -p usb: -l"
prints a message:
Listening for incoming connection on usb:...
instead of saying "Unable to bind to port".
This "Listening" is an indicator that libusb is being used and hitting the
hotsync button
allowed my Garmin iQue 3600 to by synced using ubuntu's 8.04 stock kernel !!!
I'm using pilot-link directly (the pilot-xfer conduit) but I believe the
60-libpisock.rules file should help
users of other software like gnome-pilot since most of them use pilot-link
under the hood.

This nice workaround doesn't mean that the bug I filed does not hold. The visor
module is indeed broken
for kernel 2.6.24 and ubuntu should fix it, or update to the 2.6.25 kernel for
8.04.

this is something we will throw around with eachother in

[Bug 241072] Re: No audio per Notebook lenovo 3000 n200 ubuntu 8.04

2008-06-28 Thread Rusty
A common problem with many lenovo notebook computers appears to be that
there is a switch for lenovo laptops intel audio drivers that has to be
manually enabled.

In the file '/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base' you enable audio on a Lenovo
laptop by adding a line 'options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo' then either
reload, or restart alsa ('sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-tools restart' might do
it) and audio should start working.

If there is a 'bug' it would be that the installer or the hardware
recognition software is not recognizing the lenovo variety of intel
sound cards, and either adding the line itself, or offering to try that
setting.

[Bug 243646] Re: [Hardy] gdmsetup closes when launched

2008-06-28 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 65283] Re: Make application -dbgsym packages Recommend: depended libraries

2008-06-28 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
+1

This would be extremely useful for debugging. I don't think there's any
need for a new tool though, the dbgsym packages can just Recommend: all
the other ones, or even require them. Or alternatively we could leave
them alone and have new meta-packages that require the transitive
dbgsyms, e.g. "gnome-foo-dbgsym-all".

[Bug 243690] [NEW] kde4 logon failure...

2008-06-28 Thread Philippe Piquer
Public bug reported:

Hi,
 currently running
Linux kubuntu 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Jun 18 14:43:41 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux
Description:Ubuntu 8.04
Release:8.04
KDE4.1 b2

I think this started with KDE4.1b1 : after logon I received somme message boxes
about errors (I think it was about D-Bus) but as it didn't affect
fonctionnality , I didn't care too much...
Then the day when b2 was released , but before uprading, KDE4 freezed, and was
unable to logon again ...
After I enter my login/password and choose a KDE4 session, logon splashscreen
appears, HD icon stays on for about 45s. then Settings icon stays for 4 or 4
minutes and then I go back to the blueish session login background with nothing
more than the arrow cursor.

So I tried removing ~/.kde4(does nothing), enabling debug in kdm(black
screen and freeze), running kdm-kde4 (t's ugly!), ... with no luck.

[Bug 192276] Re: No tty console with intel 82865G using "intel" driver

2008-06-28 Thread unggnu
Does it still happen with current Hardy? If so please attach a current
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Could someone also check if this unofficial package

video-intel_2.3.1-1ubuntu1~bwh3_i386.deb (AMD64
http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Testing/intel/hardy-amd64/xserver-xorg-
video-intel_2.3.1-1ubuntu1~bwh3_amd64.deb) of a newer -intel driver
fixes the problem?

To install it you have to remove the old i810 driver before.
sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-i810 xserver-xorg-video-all

And please regenerate your xorg.conf to be sure.
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

If you want to reset everything do the follow commands.
sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-video-intel
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-all

If it still doesn't work please attach a current /var/log/Xorg.0.log,
/etc/X11/xorg.conf, the output of >>lspci --vvnn<< and dmesg so we can
report it upstream.

[Bug 243616] Re: KDE4.1 - no longer starts

2008-06-28 Thread Thomas K
Tricky one--many of the problems people are having with KDE 4.0 are
supposed to be solved in KDE 4.1, so from that point of view you should
upgrade to get the latest. On the other hand, KDE 4.1 is still in beta,
and is not an official part of Ubuntu (I don't know if 4.1 final will be
released for Hardy or not. I hope so, but I doubt it.). As I say, you
may be best heading to bugs.kde.org to discuss your problems with KDE
4.1.

If you're interested in testing beta software, then you might want to
test the betas of Intrepid when they come out--these will include KDE
4.1 when it's released. Of course, it comes with the usual caveats about
being beta software: don't use it unless you're comfortable testing
something that may be unstable.

I don't know about the graphics thing, I'm afraid. Linux graphics is
rather a minefield. Best suggestion is that you try googling things like
"Compositing on " + the model of your graphics card, and see if anyone
else has made it work.

[Bug 195009] Re: [Hardy] synaptic touchpad not detected

2008-06-28 Thread Goswin
Stefan

Yup, this one works! Don't call yourself lazy though, after all the help
you've given ;-) So to give you the additional info you requested about
the laptop:

bios-version:M1.04
system-manufacturer:Notebook
system-product-name:MAM 2070
system-version:5a

Tthat's how the system identifies itself. Commercially it is known as a
Cybermaxx, but that is a sub-brand of Medion. The bottom of the laptop
also mentions a Medion-like type description (MD 95448) so maybe this
quirk fixes some Medion issues (if any) as well.

[Bug 218049] Re: scrollkeeper-update failed with "corrupted double-linked list" during update-manager update

2008-06-28 Thread Ubuntu user
On a clean install of Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) from the official CD, on
a uniprocessor system, I just got several crashes during the first
update of the system (via the Update Manager):

For example, setting a new version of update-manager itself (quoted from
the update details log):

Setting up update-manager (1:0.87.27) ...
*** glibc detected *** scrollkeeper-update: corrupted double-linked list

In my opinion, this makes the Ubuntu installation risky to use for the
"normal user", i.e. I don't know the side-effects of these crashes at
update time, and I will have to reinstall Ubuntu from scratch when this
bug is resolved.

[Bug 243695] [NEW] Fetching how many updates are avaiable

2008-06-28 Thread ari-tczew
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-notifier

This is a wish. If any updates are available, update-notifier inform us
about it by message "Software updates available". There would be better,
that at once inform how many updates are available e.g. "8 software

[Bug 243693] [NEW] every sudo log is a violation

2008-06-28 Thread gavinmc
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: logcheck

Since hardy (apparently), these are the entries in
/etc/logcheck/violations.d.server/sudo

^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ sudo\[[0-9]+\]: \(pam_[[:alnum:]]+\) .*$
^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ sudo\[[0-9]+\]:
pam_[[:alnum:]]+\(sudo:[[:alnum:]]+\): .*$
^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ sudo: .*$

This means that we get an email from logcheck any time someone used
sudo. This may be suitable on debian I guess, but it's not suitable on
an ubuntu server where sudo is the primary mode of administration.

I have no problem with failed authentication logs, but an entry for
every single use of sudo is pretty inconvenient on an Ubuntu server as
that is normal behaviour.

[Bug 243697] [NEW] network-manager-vpnc doesn't start scripts in /etc/NetworkManager/dispatch.d/

2008-06-28 Thread Peter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-vpnc

Hi,
I'm using kubuntu 8.04 with the following packages (that I think are relevant):
network-manager 0.6.6-0ubuntu5
network-manager-kde 1:0.2.2-1ubuntu2
network-manager-vpnc 0.6.4svn2422-0ubuntu5
vpnc 0.5.1r275-1

I created the following file:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 67 2008-06-28 09:59
/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/02test

#!/bin/sh -e
echo $1 >> /tmp/nmlog.txt
echo $2 >> /tmp/nmlog.txt

After running 'sudo rm /tmp/nmlog.txt', disconnecting and reconnecting my
WLAN(eth1) connection via the NetworkManager kde panel applet using offline
mode, /tmp/nmlog looks like this:
eth1
up
eth1
down
eth1
post-down
eth0
post-down
eth1
post-down
eth0
post-down
eth1
pre-up
eth1
up

Now I 'sudo rm /tmp/nmlog.txt' again and connect to my universities
cisco vpn using the panel applet. The connection is working, an
interface called tun0 is created. /tmp/nmlog.txt is nonexistant.

I expect it to contain something like
tun0
pre-up
tun0
up

Any hints on how to get the script executed when a vpn connection is started or
where to put a script to have it executed when a vpn connection is started are
welcome.
Peter

[Bug 237267] Re: kdesudo kvpnc

2008-06-28 Thread Christian A. Reiter
The menu entry of kvpnc is:
su-to-root -X -c /usr/bin/kvpnc

other root programs have just their program names without the "su-to-root" or
path as menu entries, like adept_manager.
ksystemlog uses "kdesu ksystemlog [...]", seems that each program cooks it's
own soup.

  * debian/control:
- Move python-gnome2-extras from Recommends to Suggests, as it's only
needed for the Spell plugin and brings many modules and dependencies.
  * debian/emesene-launcher:
- Pass arguments to Controller.py
  * debian/patches/from_upstream_fix_gtk_image_loading.patch:
- Patch from upstream r1394, loads an stock image if the personal one
  couldn't be loaded.
  * debian/patches/use_webbrowser_module_to_open_html_local_files.patch:
- Use webbrowser module instead of desktop.py from emesene to open
local html files, as desktop.py will use gnome-open for GNOME which
uses gnome-vfs, which since 1:2.22.0-4 makes text/* a subgroup of
text/plain, making them being opened with a text editor instead of
  the browser. LP: #241765.
For Lenny+1, if upstream doesn't change this code, it could be
possible to just switch desktop.py to use gvfs-open.

2008-06-28 Thread FredBezies
Public bug reported:

Hello.

I wanted to test Intrepid Alpha 1 AMD64 iso image in a KVM virtual
machine.

But every single I tried to boot on it, nothing happened. So, I
installed a command line version of Hardy Heron, and upgrade it to
Intrepid Ibex.

And every single time I try to boot on 2.6.26.2 kernel, I got this :

crc error.

[Bug 158590] Re: [Gutsy] Erratic volume control behaviour

2008-06-28 Thread Maxim Levitsky
This is clearly a gstremer alsa mixer bug.

I found a workaround, which is to switch to OSS mixer in sound settings
OSS mixer is just an emulation on top of alsa, but gsteremer doesn't have this
bug
in oss mixer code.

[Bug 97306] Re: [feisty] installer reports I/O error dev fd0

2008-06-28 Thread lony
Hi,

I m expecting the same problem on Abit IP35, 8.04 (KDE4 mix) where I
have no FDD and have no ideas where to get it in this location. I have
found that this problem is appearing for about 2 or more years, and
nothing changed from beta to beta, from release to release.

Some remark- When i trying to boot LiveCD I get this in 50%. When I
trying to install I always have this error for about 6 retries.

[Bug 242527] Re: 2.6.24-19-generic kernel breaks restricted NVIDIA driver

2008-06-28 Thread higstar
Why would this be marked as medium??

The message which was presented after upgrading from generic-18 to
generic-19 the graphics needed configuring. Unfortunately I had a brain
fade and selected configure, then selected vesa graphics card.

Following that the resolution seemed to be greater than the monitor could
handle, as the screen was full of garbage.
Had to load generic-18 recovery and restore the previous xorg.conf.

My wife (who's computer this was) is really not that impressed. Luckily
I updatetd on a weekend, otherwise she would have probably lost a weeks
worth of time :(

[Bug 243693] Re: every sudo log is a violation

2008-06-28 Thread gavinmc
okay, that was a little hasty. I now think I understand a little
better. The above filters are present to ensure that every sudo event
is handled at the violations layer and not below that.

So, instead of changing these lines, can I suggest we add an extra entry
to /etc/logcheck/violations.ignore.d/logcheck-sudo to match these

Jun 27 16:02:18 cuimhne sudo: pam_unix(sudo:session): session opened for user
root by gavinmc(uid=0)

Jun 27 16:02:18 cuimhne sudo: pam_unix(sudo:session): session closed for user
root

Jun 27 16:03:41 cuimhne sudo: pam_unix(sudo:session): session opened for user
root by gavinmc(uid=0)

Jun 27 16:03:41 cuimhne sudo: pam_unix(sudo:session): session closed for user
root

possibly these?

^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ sudo: pam_unix\(sudo:session\): session
opened for user root by [[:alnum:]]+\(uid=0\)
^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ sudo: pam_unix\(sudo:session\): session

[Bug 218439] Re: CPU load randomly hits 100%; XMPP random reconnects

Something interesting to notice :

The other plugins of pigin seem to be continuing to work, even the CPU
reched 100%, and the GUI is frozen. I can read other messages in the
debug log from the msn plugin, for exemple, but at that time there is no
one line of the jabber plugin.

an exemple of the last lines aof the jabber plugin in the debug log :

Was not able to successfully upgrade the deb. Ran into some problems and
nobody seemed to have any answers for me. I simply don't have time to
dedicate to this task right now, so I am unassigning myself in the hopes
that somebody else will get the job done. (per today's mailing list,
this has been done by "Tacone" already, but not sure if it's actually
submitted to MotU for Hardy or Intrepid)
