[Bug 216302] Re: gdm crash at first log in

2008-07-01 Thread Martin Striz
I'm experiencing a similar problem, except with Intel video hardware.

Since I upgraded to Hardy, on the first login attempt, it looks like GDM
is simply crashing and resets to the login window. I don't see any
error messages though. I see a few messages like I usually do when I
log out and go back to the login window. It takes 2-3 attempts to
finally login.

[Bug 244776] [NEW] OO writer locks up when trying to save document

2008-07-01 Thread Colin Kelly
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

When I create a document in OO writer everything goes fine until I
attempt to "save," or "save as." The save dialogue appears with no text
or buttons and the main OO window greys out. The save window cant be
closed with the close button on the top of the frame or by alt+f4. I
have to close the main OO window.

I tried disabling compiz+emerald thinking its a likely culprit, however
under metacity I find the entire screen locks up and not just OO and I
have to restart X. I can print the document before saving, recovery
will restore some of the document when I restart OO. The same lockup
occurs if I attempt to export to pdf.

On further investigation existing Spreadsheet documents and
presentations are also affected by this, not just new documents. I will
be happ to offer any other info that may help to diagnose or fix this
problem.

[Bug 96905] Re: USB flash drive shown twice on the desktop

2008-07-01 Thread e13
Hardy on T41: some files are opened with vim or gedit from usb-disk, do
the suspend, wake up - there is second "2.1 GB Media" icon on desktop.
Mounts are disk for first one, disk-1 for second. Opened files are not
accessible anymore, You have to close all of them, because "disk" is now
empty, only "disk-1" works. You can unmount only disk-1, unmounting disk
will not work.

There is no such behavior if You close all files from this disk before
suspending.

That sucks, if I may say so.

[Bug 220688] Re: Subversion command-line client, version 1.4.3. stores passwords in plain text

2008-07-01 Thread Senthil Kumaran S
This feature (storing encrypted passwords) is available in subversion
latest trunk (31970) which will be released in the future (may be
1.6.0?). It is a huge feature which was added, and I don't think there
is any proposal for backporting this to 1.4.x branch since there are
quite a lot of API changes which had gone in.

To give a gist of this feature in latest trunk, we have support of
storing encrypted passwords in gnome-keyring and kwallet. If subversion
is not compiled with any of these options, then user will be prompted
before storing the passwords in plaintext.

[Bug 244670] Re: [hardy] Request of update of aMule to 2.2.1 final release

2008-07-01 Thread Festor Wailon Dacoba
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: amule

  Hi all! :D

The current version of aMule in Ubuntu 8.04 is not a stable version
(2.2.0~svn20080218-0ubuntu4, it is a svn snapshot). Yet at the time was
more stable than 2.1.3 so it was included.

Now it has published the final version 2.2.1 that can be considered stable
(at least more than a snapshot svn)

- The main reasons why I am requesting that the upgrade program are as follows:
-
+ The main reasons (ARE NOT ALL. I continued looking for specific errors) why I
am requesting that the upgrade program are as follows:
+
+ High importance:
+
+ -> The extended version of the Kademlia network, Kad2, wasn't complete
+ in the svn ubuntu has. That was Bad (tm), to the extent of damaging the
+ network, especially when dealing with firewalled users, but also when
+ indexing files >4GB. that's serious, from the network perspective. (from
+ Kry, aMule dev)
+
+ -> Also the new network code reinforces the security of the network
+ about attacks to its nodes, and it's important not to have old clients
+ around. (from Kry, aMule dev)
+
+ -> In the connection process amulegui exchanges some information with
+ the target, including some 'protocol version'. If the client and server
+ don't agree on this number the connection is rejected. The number
+ interchanged is different in the SVN version. In the function
+ ExternalConn::Authenticate it states that
+
+ // For release versions, we don't want to allow connections
+ from any arbitrary SVN client.
+
+ It seems that a SVN version gui cannot communicate with a 'release'
+ version daemon. (LP: 206648)
+
+ Medium importance:
+
+ -> It solves many problems of stability of svn that caused unexpected falls.
+ + https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/amule/+bug/230015/comments/3
+ + Also (LP: 230015) (LP: 213586) (LP: 207178)
+
+ Low importance:
+
+ -> Copy ED2K link to clipboard works strange (LP: 244670)
+ -> aMule makes bad hashlinks (ed2k://) (LP: 94231)
+ -> amule have by default konqueror browser in ubuntu (LP: 209810)
+ -> Shared files priority don't get updated on amulegui
+ -> 100% of CPU used by amuleweb
+ -> broken log view
+ -> disable upnp in preferences if library loading fails
+
+ Possible bugs to be solved:
+
+ (LP: 234422)
+
+ Old reasons (Not so Disabled):
+
* This release could be considered a bugfix release since most of the new
features of aMule 2.2.1 are already included in the latest svn. Indeed! Some
features are incomplete in the svn snapshot
* Version 2.2.1, to be an official launch, can be reported hypothetical
errors in the program. A snapshot is svn, from the standpoint of developers, a
lot of provisional code and that is no longer present at the launch stable.
* Ubuntu 8.04 is a LTS release so it will be in use at least 3 years for
desktops. I do not think it advisable to maintain a snapshot svn for 3 years
since "svn snapshot" is not synonymous of stability.
* At least in the forum of aMule have been reported numerous problems with
the svn snapshot where developers can only advise compile a stable version or
an svn latest snapshot. The end user should avoid the process of compiling
whenever possible.

- Some of these problems are:
- http://forum.amule.org/index.php?topic=15058.0
- http://forum.amule.org/index.php?topic=15025.0

- http://forum.amule.org/index.php?topic=14833.0
+ Some of these problems are in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/amule/+bug/230015/comments/3

And these are just one example (if I am put a full list would be too
large). Such is the problem with this svn snapshot that aMule devs are
  already tired of Ubuntu.

  http://forum.amule.org/index.php?topic=15259.0

  Discussion here: http://forum.amule.org/index.php?topic=15317.0

They blame the Ubuntu patches in wxGTK and crypto + + packages. But in
my opinion, Ubuntu users reports of bugs never stopped and was in this
svn when the devs are tired.

I do not say that 2.2.1 is a "panacea" but at least is a stable version.
I am using self since he left and it seems to be more stable than
  version repositories

[Bug 244450] Re: gnome hangs regularly

2008-07-01 Thread mcas
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How
to report bugs effectively" [WWW]
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at [WWW]
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
4. your ubuntu version

[Bug 212098] Re: "easy" file sharing not notifying about logout/login

2008-07-01 Thread Paul Smith
I understand that modifying groups requires a logout (although I've been
hacking UNIX for 20+ years and I still don't really understand why
that's true). But it's monumentally sucky to have to log out, even if
there's some dialog that tells you you need to do it.

I don't see why nautilus-share cannot be included as part of the base
distribution so that this is not necessary. But, if it indeed cannot
be, then maybe we should change the base package to add the sambashare
group, even though it's not used by any packages until nautilus-share is
installed. User accounts can be added to that group as they would be
other groups, when the user account is created. This would fix the need
to log out/in due to group updates.

Status in Source Package "parallels" in Ubuntu: Fix Released

Bug description:
Binary package hint: parallels

I have a Dell Inspiron 1420N running Dell's Version of Ubuntu 7.10. I have
been
working to get Parallels to work, and I been installing XP as a guest OS since
early February 2008. I had Parallels 2.2. working with XP with NO
networking at all. I had Parallels 2.2.2224 where nothing worked at all.

Now I have Parallels 2.2.2226 working with XP as the guest OS and I can get
the
networking to work in the XP guest OS only if I plug in the a cable to the
ethernet port. I sure would like to get the networking in the XP guest OS
feeding off my wireless card in Ubuntu?

Also I have noticed my system completely locks up at times on the 2.2.226
version when either using XP guest or the Ubuntu host.

Please advise.

[Bug 189814] Re: HAL crashes dell laptops with a BIOS password

2008-07-01 Thread Andrea Ratto
** Summary changed:

- computer and touchpad is buggy with BIOS password set
+ HAL crashes dell laptops with a BIOS password

** Description changed:

- This bug happens with a freshly installed hardy beta 1 when the computer
- is running on battery or at the moment I plug/unplug the electric cable
- into my computer.
+ This description is totally rewritten by Andrea Ratto (LP andrearatto) to
recap the situation. The root cause has been really hard to find as it seemed a
kernel issue related to the touchpad at first.
+ The problem reported here and its cause have already been confirmed by at
least 5 users.
+ This bug refers primarily to HAL, but also relates to libsmbios. It is
triggered by gnome-power-manager, but it's not its fault.

- If I let the computer unused for some minutes (2-5 minutes), when I come
- back and try to use the mouse, the mouse move of some centimeters,
- suddenly freeze for almost 5 seconds, and then come back to life. It can
- be reproduced since it continually happens each time I use my computer
- after reading a short text or spooke to somebody. If I plug or unplug
- the electric cable, the mouse freeze again for a 7 seconds. If any
- sounds are playing during the time that the mouse freeze, the sound is
- also corrupted and freeze.
+ Symptoms:
+ very frequent temporary lock-ups on input after some inactivity
+ frequent hard lock-ups with CAPS lock and NUM lock flashing
+ very frequent loss of synchronization with the touchpad, which then looses
advanced functionalities; with this in dmesg
+ [ 804.829840] psmouse.c: GlidePoint at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost
synchronization, throwing 4 bytes away.
+ [ 807.405427] psmouse.c: resync failed, issuing reconnect request
+ [ 810.926845] input: PS/2 Mouse as /devices/virtual/input/input9
+ [ 810.973805] input: AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint as
/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input10

- This bug does not happen when the electric cable is plugged, and it
- happens with metacity as much as compiz.
+ Affected hardware:
+ dell laptops with a BIOS password set (probably all/most of them)

- Each time that the mouse suddenly freeze, I get this in dmesg :
- [ 804.829840] psmouse.c: GlidePoint at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost
synchronization, throwing 4 bytes away.
- [ 807.405427] psmouse.c: resync failed, issuing reconnect request
- [ 810.926845] input: PS/2 Mouse as /devices/virtual/input/input9
- [ 810.973805] input: AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint as
/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input10
+ Releases affected
+ hardy for sure, probably intrepid too. gusty is not affected.
+ Other distro are affected too, e.g. Fedora 9.

- This bug is not a hardware failure because it is not reproducible under
- Linux Ubuntu Gutsy and Windows XP.
+ What is known so far:
+ gnome-power-manager tries to dim the brightness of the screen after some
inactivity and then reset it upon input.
+ This is a default setting, so the user has no clue of what might be causing
the issue.
+ gnome-power-manager calls HAL to do the job. HAL on dell machines, since
hardy, uses libsmbios for brightness setting.

- Dell Inspiron 9300, i386
+ Libsmbios needs the BIOS password even to change the brightness and HAL
+ has no way to tell it that password, as of now. Some users have also
+ reported that libsmbios does not work even from the command line
+ utility, specifying the pass.

- Update : It has been found that this bug only appears when there is a
- BIOS password set on laptop computers.
+ However, instead of just printing an error when it fails, it makes the
+ computer lock for a few seconds, due to the direct interaction with the
+ bios on a very low level. The kernel has then problems reading input
+ events and might crash. These lock-ups should also be avoided in
+ libsmbios, as that is really ugly. However it needs root privileges and
+ it's HAL who is calling it again and again when it should not, so the
+ lockups are more HAL's fault.
+
+ Testing/repoducing:
+ 1: of course using gnome and gnome-power-manager, setting "Dim display when
idle" to enabled.
+ Same effects can be achieved by:
+ 2: using the command /usr/sbin/dellLcdBrightness from libsmbios-bin package.
+ Here's a command that rapidly switch brightness 10 times:
+ for x in `seq 1 10`; do sudo dellLcdBrightness -a -v 1;sleep 0.1; sudo
dellLcdBrightness -a -v 5; done
+ #Warning it may hang your machine
+ 3: the brightness applet of the gnome-panel.
+
+ A possible elegant solution:
+ * Correct HAL's detection of brightness setting capability on dell, so that
it only reports it when it can be set with no errors. It might require using
some test method in libsmbios, which I don't know if it is present or has to be
added.
+ Maybe also add some way for HAL to read the bios password from config files
if the user wishes so. (This is probably somewhat already planned)
+ Solving the stalling in libsmbios might prevent crashes, but yet HAL would
keep calling it and get errors, so a fix in HAL

pytz should sanitize common_timezones and all_timezones so that only
timezones that are actually available are listed. It isn't a problem

[Bug 244764] [NEW] Cannot install kernel updates: No space left on device

2008-07-01 Thread Craig
Public bug reported:

When the update manager downloads and installs kernel updates, I get
failures and information that the new packages will not be installed. I
looked in the apt log files for the cause and found that my boot
partition was full. It is worth noting that when I originally
installed/partitioned I chose the option to use the entire disk and took
the defaults (which uses 100MB for boot partition.)

The obvious workaround for this was to go to /boot and remove a few old
versions, but I cannot imagine telling a new user to "just go over to
your boot partition a delete some backup kernel files." That wouldn't
go very far towards working on defect #1. For many users this could
easily become a security issue because the system will just continue
working, using an old kernel, and never installing any further kernel
updates.

If it is needed, here is a portion of the apt log showing the output of the
installation process:

[Bug 237894] Re: I cannot connect to any server. Conection hangs up at "channel 0: open confirm rwindow 0 rmax 32768"

2008-07-01 Thread
The solution posted by Alex worked for me too !

I was going nuts trying to figure out if it was a problem with my Dlink
wireless router, openssh-server, or openssh-client. Finally, I tried
putty, which worked perfectly. That helped me google down the problem to
this thread.

Thanks Alex !

[Bug 244760] [NEW] firefox pastes extra space from Google Spreadsheets

2008-07-01 Thread Theo of Theoretic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Using Firefox 3.0b4 from backports repository on Gutsy 7.10 on AMD64
processor. This Happens with Firefox in both GNOME and XFCE.

When in Google Spreadsheets (at least the Spreadsheets version with
Google Apps, have not verified with the normal Google version), whenever
I select a spreadsheet cell and CTRL-C to copy, then paste using CTRL-V
into a form field, firefox adds an extra white space at the end of the
copied text.

I have verified that this extra space does not exist in the spreadsheet
cell itself in Google Docs. It also does not happen using Internet
Explorer on Windows XP. It did not happen using Firefox 2 on this same
Ubuntu machine, either. Only Firefox 3 on Ubuntu had this error.

[Bug 244729] Re: why my computer freezes up every few minutes with the kubuntu but not with the ubuntu ???

2008-07-01 Thread jeff
1. You need to give more info: kubuntu release version, uname -a, lspci
-v would also be nice. Even a description of the problem. More specific
than just "it doesn't boot"

2. While debatable, there is generally no need for antivirus software
for linux, unless said software can detect rootkits. AVG is one I've
heard has a linux version. This is not an endorsement, just an "i
heard".

3. ubuntu is not supported on ppc except for 6.06 LTS. Go to
www.kubuntu.org/downloads.php

4. More info needed. A copy of `dmesg` for starters, as well as `lspci
-v` and `lsmod`

5. All major filesystems in ubuntu (redhat, debian, centos) will not
perform noticeably better when defragmented as in windows. Just be sure
there is >10-15% free space on any one disk partition.

[Bug 244757] [NEW] 8800 GTS Knockout exition hangs after compiling binary driver and restricted drive. Whole system hangs but runs fine with default NV driver. Board: NF44XA7COMBVGA1 BIO STAR

2008-07-01 Thread Steve
Public bug reported:

Default NV driver works fine with 8800 GTS but when I try to compile
kernel module computer completely hangs after reboot and have to hit
the reset button on box and boot into recovery mode.

When trying to compile 173.14.09 nvidia kernel module is successfull.
Update xorg using their utility is successful.

Computer crashes right before the password prompt after reboot black
screen monitor looses signal input form graphic card.

hardy heron has been completely updated and still fails to boot when
nvidia kernel module is loaded. It doesn't matter if it's from the .RUN
file or form restricted driver. Computer still crashes the same.

Computer hung exactly the same in Gusty Gibbon but passed with Open SUSE 11

Nvidia driver works with GeForce 7 Card with binary . RUN driver and Open GL
and Compiz runs fine.

I have attached a bug report form nvidas driver.

[Bug 243543] Re: missing .desktop file in no icon for gtkam

2008-07-01 Thread Saïvann Carignan
The missing icon is due to the corrupted PNG icon in the 0.1.14 version
of gtkam. The 0.1.15 version fixes this, however, it needs libgphoto2 >=
2.4.0.05 which is not in Intrepid or debian unstable yet. I think that
we will have to wait for libgphoto2 2.4.1 before updating gtkam and
having the correct icon.

I literally have 25 backup copies of my xorg.conf file, so I am not sure which
one caused this crash. Here are the one I am currently using (essentially
default) and the one that EnvyNG creates. Now that I can get Envy to run at
all it just leads to a plain black screen on both the monitor and the s-video
output when it reaches the login screen.

[Bug 159276] Re: phpmyadmin package does not work "out of the box"

2008-07-01 Thread Aren Cambre
OK, finally was able to test out again. I am running a fairly fresh,
clean install of Ubuntu 8.04. This is a clean install, not an upgrade
from something else.

I installed phpmyadmin, the latest package, using aptitude.

I immediately went to /etc/apache2/conf.d and noticed that, again, no
symbolic link is created.

Note that I am using apache2. I selected that when I installed.

[Bug 222905] Re: open source ati driver in hardy can't do external monitor on laptop

2008-07-01 Thread Robert Schroll
I found that bug 231081 describes the same problem in the ATI IGP 340M
video card. Apparently, the IGP 340M is nearly identical to the
Mobility U1 (also known as the IGP 320M). The solution to bug 231081
was to update xserver-xorg-video-ati to 6.8.192. I couldn't find that
specific release, but I found that Intrepid currently has version 6.9.0.
I downloaded and installed the relevant .debs, and the situation has
improved.

It's not working perfectly, but here's what I can do to get the external
monitor to clone the LCD:
1. Plug in the external monitor. (Nothing happens.)
2. Open the Screen Resolution tool (under System | Preferences). It tells me
I'm currently cloning the screen at 1024x768 and 60 Hz.
3. Change the resolution to 800x600; hit Apply. The laptop LCD resizes.
Sometimes the external monitor gets a signal at this point.
4. Chose "Use Previous Settings" from the Accept Changes dialog box. The
laptop screen resizes and the external monitor usually has the signal by now.
If not, goto 3.

Making and canceling other changes (e.g., cloning and rotation), or even
accepting and then reverting them, can also get a signal to the external
monitor, though not as reliably. Once I get the external monitor on, I
can turn off the LCD and use the external monitor by itself. I have not
been able to get an extended desktop working. Curiously, I have to do
all of this through the Screen Resolution tool. Using xrandr on the
command line shuts off the external monitor.

I've changed the package to xserver-xorg-video-ati, since that's what
the fix updated. Should this bug be marked a duplicate of 231081? The
problem was the same and the hardware was nearly identical, but the fix
doesn't seem to have worked quite as well in this case.

** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: None => xserver-xorg-video-ati

[Bug 34247] Re: Trash always empty.

2008-07-01 Thread antonioni
'On hardy :

2 bugs with trash applet :

1 - The icon of the trash applet doesn't get updated.
if I delete something, the applet's tooltip will say that the trash is
empty, and the bin will look empty.
But if I open it, I can se the delted items. Once you open the Trash in
Nautilus the status is updated.

2 - I can always empty Trash although Trash is empty.'

It occurs sometimes here, too.
Two years that this bug still exists. Aff.

2008-07-01 Thread undecidable
I should add to the above:
. jarnal causes
Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.NullPointerException: null
attribute

and that the
  CUPS_SERVER=localhost
workaround makes no difference.

In all cases simply pressing 'print' causes the above messages.

I confirm this bug. Listening to music through rhythmbox and movies
through VLC or totem result in a lot of noise over the normal playback.
