[Bug 164589] Re: Occasional screen-wide "blink" when using opengl apps (compiz also) and Nvidia cards

2008-07-07 Thread Kraptor
Hi PeskyWabb1t.

I've been using this for some months and I've noted not too much
difference in GPU heat.

This said, you can put the option Coolbits to 1 in your xorg.conf file,
and nvidia-settings will let you change speed of both the GPU and memory
for your graphics card to lower the heat or the power consumption.

[Bug 246496] [NEW] [Hardy] Several artsd competing for 100% CPU

2008-07-07 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: arts

This happens on an Acer Aspire 3104 WLMi after upgrading from Gutsy to
Hardy (problem didn't exist in Gutsy) and has persisted thru all Hardy
updates so far.

At KDE session startup, not always but very often, and especially when
restoring at the same time a number of windows that would each produce a
little sound when opening, the system shows dreadfully slow and produces
no sound. It remains in this state of "dreadful slowness" indefinitely.

"top" then shows that several artsd processes (typically 2 or 3) are
running and competing for eating 100% CPU.

Issuing "killall -KILL artsd" (-TERM doesn't help) kills all mad artsd
processes and :

- The system suddenly issues a cascade of sounds that seems to have been
waiting, queued or whatever.
- After that a single artsd process is running, behaving OK and sound works.

Loaded sound modules are :

snd_hda_intel 344728 1
snd_pcm_oss42144 0
snd_mixer_oss 17920 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_pcm78596 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm_oss

soundcore 8800 1 snd

Sound hardware (per lshw) is :

description: Audio device
product: IXP SB4x0 High Definition Audio Controller

[Bug 55159] Re: [edgy] usplash prevents passwords from being not echoed on the console

2008-07-07 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Daniel Hahler : I can reproduce this bug (which can be considered as a
security flaw) in Hardy and Intrepid. This bug can be reproduced in
these conditions :

Pre-requisites :
Having a configured cryptsetup with a luks partition and applying the patch
provided in bug 139363 to re-enable cryptsetup password through usplash.

Steps to reproduce :
1. Reboot your computer
2. When asked by usplash, type your password, but don't press "enter" to
validate your password.
3. Switch to tty 1 with CTRL + ALT + F1
4. Switch back to the usplash tty with CTRL + ALT + F8

Result :
The password is written in plain text in the console.

Strangely, this bug can't be reproduced with LVM cryptsetup installation
that comes with hardy alternate install CD. "cryptroot" which is started
by initramfs is almost identical to the patch in bug 139363 but the
final result differ for two things :

1. The password never appears in the console.
2. asterisks appears as you type the password, instead of appearing only once
you pressed "enter"

The fact that one is started inside initramfs and that the other one is
started during the init.d boot sequence seems to have an impact on this
bug.

[Bug 139363] Re: "Enter passphrase" for LUKS/cryptsetup breaks usplash

2008-07-07 Thread Saïvann Carignan
The patch looks good (almost identical as the "cryptroot") that runs
with initramfs when installed in encrypted LVM with the alternate CD.
However, due to the security reasons explained in bug 55159, it is still
not suitable for a upload into intrepid or hardy, at least until the
"clear password in console" security problem is fixed.

[Bug 220568] Re: firefox font changed to narrower, less readable font

2008-07-07 Thread Arne Goetje
The mapping from Helvetica to Nimbus Sans L is there for a reason:
metric compatibility. This means documents set in Helvetica but opened
in OpenOffice or any other word processor will still have more or less
the same layout. DejaVu Sans is *not* metric compatible, neither with
Helvetica, nor with Arial. Therefor a substitution in favor of DejaVu
Sans would screw up page layouts for documents set in Helvetica or
Arial. Since the fontconfig settings affect all applications on the
desktop, this change needs to be very well thought over.

And I can say that I won't endorse that change on system level. If a
user wants to do it on his system, fine. But the proper way to do it
would be:

cat /etc/fonts/conf.avail/30-metric-aliases.conf >> ~/.fonts.conf

Then edit ~/.fonts.conf and do the changes there. That way the changes
will be preserved during an upgrade of fontconfig.

[Bug 245911] Re: Add Esperanto chars to keyboard layout [patch]

2008-07-07 Thread J . Pablo Fernández
That should be possible to some extent, and it shouldn't be that hard.
In my opinion, features like adding euro to e, break when you switch to
a layout like Esperanto or USA - Dvorak. So it's hard to me to test my
own work if the reference is broken. I may look into it when I have more
free time. At the moment I'm trying to create some packages to put in my
PPA, so people can start using these layouts without having to apply any
patches or wait for some possible inclusion in future Ubuntus.

subscribers is of course well aware of the issue; you're generating a big
amount of mail for nothing -- just complaining won't help to get this fixed.
Moreover, comments that could help to get this done are interleaved with the
other posts.
Just quietly subscribe and wait.

If you indeed *can't* wait, please help Rockwalrus with packaging (see
https://launchpad.net/~eclipse-team/+archive) or else make up your own
package and put it in a PPA.

I'd never used it before, but apparently this laptop has a radio
enable/disable bound to Fn+F2. Toggling this function and reloading b43
doesn't seem to make a difference (same dmesg), so I don't know if the
key combination is being detected correctly.

Thanks for the background information. Of course I want to help to get
b43 working rather than using a deprecated driver.

regards,
Ben

[Bug 246426] Re: nothing works!

2008-07-07 Thread mcas
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How
to report bugs effectively" [WWW]
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at [WWW]
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Also, please answer these questions:
Is this crash reproducible? If so, which are the steps that lead to it?
Which flash package do you have installed?
Which Java package do you have installed?
Which Firefox extensions do you have installed?

This will greatly aid us in tracking down your problem.
Thanks!

[Bug 246482] [NEW] MSN smileys are not ordered by group

2008-07-07 Thread YukunIX
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

When using MSN account, trying to insert a Smiley to a chat
conversation, the icons are not grouped. It is harder and takes longer
for user to find the right smile face or icon. It should provide better
user experience if the smile faces and icons are grouped. For example,
all the faces should remain together, stars and moons should be all
together, etc.

[Bug 185165] Re: Ubuntu does not open MS Windows internet shortcuts with 'url' extension

2008-07-07 Thread vj
I can confirm this bug - it is a long standing issue over several Ubuntu
releases. It is (in my opinion, as one migrating from windoze) a major
impediment to useability of ubuntu for those people switching operating
systems. It seems really daft that something as simple as clicking on
existing internet shortcuts is not supported.

This should be given fairly high importance given that most migrators
from windoze will inevitably have al least some, perhaps many, shortcuts
they wish to use.

[Bug 246478] [NEW] synaptic crashes with SIGSEGV when removing a lot of packages

2008-07-07 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

When setting all packages for removal, and setting ubuntu-desktop for
reinstallation, synaptic crashes with SIGSEGV

Steps to reproduce :
1. Opens synaptic
2. Click on "installed packages" on the left panel.
3. Select all packages and set them for complete removal, answer no to all
questions.
4. Search ubuntu-desktop package and set it for reinstallation

Result :
synaptic crashes. It's not possible to do a massive cleanup in installed
programs by using the "delete all except absolutely needed by default + other
stuff" method.

I think I will try taking a look at the apt-proxy source myself if/when

mirror but really I don't need a full mirror of all the distributions if
apt-proxy would just work properly.

[Bug 244737] Re: Multiple users login crash

2008-07-07 Thread Juan Xavier
Actually I just found out that the problem is not related to the second user
because I locked my session, pressed "Change User" in the locked screen, took
me to GDM and it restarted GDM while killing my session.
I've also noticed that there were two GDM instances running in tty9 and tty10,
at least after that "restart".

I had previously enabled debug on GDM so I'm attaching the syslog.

For comparison with the syslog file, here's the time when auth.log registered
my session closing:

The problem seems to be caused by a missing symlink in the package for
Firefox 3. Binary components in Firefox extensions are linked against
libnspr4.so. However, Ubuntu's libnspr4.so is named libnspr4.so.0d.

For those experiencing issues there is a work around for the bug at the
moment:

cd /usr/lib
sudo ln -s libnspr4.so.0d libnspr4.so
cd ~/.mozilla/firefox/*.default
rm xpti.dat compreg.dat

This will create the missing symlink and also clear the Firefox
component cache to force it into reloading previously failed libraries
caused by the misnaming of libnspr4.so

** Affects: firefox (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

Thorsten,

We have seen this and suspect that it is due to a bug in Compiz.

When this error occurs, xwininfo shows that the window has been made
Override Redirect and its X properties have been removed.

I hope this helps,

Phil

this is the link:

So, this being most likely a compiz bug, would SOMEONE please get on
this that 'can'?

[Bug 44100] Re: [Ubuntu] [hardy] OpenOffice lacks canadian english spellcheck

2008-07-07 Thread Ryan Kelln
Jonathan Stewart's solution worked for me in 8.04 as well, but with a
few minor changes to this line:

sudo mv en_CA* /usr/share/myspell/dicts

Thus the sequence looks like:

wget
http://ftp.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/contrib/dictionaries/en_CA.zip
unzip en_CA.zip
sudo mv en_CA.* /usr/share/myspell/dicts
cd /usr/share/myspell/dicts/
sudo chown root:root en_CA.*
sudo ln -s en_CA.aff en-CA.aff
sudo ln -s en_CA.dic en-CA.dic

I also tried adding:
THES en CA th_en_US_v2

to the bottom of the dictionary.lst file (that is how the GB thesaurus
is done) but that didn't work. :(

[Bug 139443] Re: Total lockup while browsing FF

2008-07-07 Thread Michael Moore
Hi,

I'm getting the same symptoms pretty regularly. I can't actively
reproduce it, but probably 1/2 to 1/4 of the times I use my computer it
locks up.

You can see I'm getting the LPIB message here:
cat messages | grep LPIB
Jul 7 20:58:29 squelch kernel: [ 73.830973] hda-intel: Invalid position
buffer, using LPIB read method instead.
Jul 7 21:11:50 squelch kernel: [ 69.076738] hda-intel: Invalid position
buffer, using LPIB read method instead.

Here's what I did last time it happened (30 minutes ago).

1) I booted and left the computer on for about 20 minutes at the login screen
while I was doing other stuff
2) I logged in and started Firefox
3) Firefox froze after opening three tabs. I closed it and tried to open it,
but it wouldn't open. I tried to open a terminal, but the terminal wouldn't
open. I could open Gnome Calculator though.
4) I switched to a VT and logged in. I could use command line programs just
fine.
5) I noticed that there was still a firefox process.
6) I did 'killall firefox', it didn't kill it
7) I did 'killall -9 firefox', it didn't kill it
8) I got the PID and did 'sudo kill -9 $PIDHERE'. The process hung.
9) On other VTs I soon discovered that any sudo command wouldn't work

I used ALT-SYSRQ+R-E-I-S-U-B to reboot the computer since I couldn't use
sudo shutdown, or the GUI button.

In the past the computer has frozen when I wasn't by it, and when I
would come back it would be totally locked up and the fan would be at
top speed.

I'd be happy to provide any information developers might find useful.
I'm on Ubuntu 8.04 on an AMD 32 bit machine with 2G of RAM.
