[Bug 204616] Re: Firefox doesn't use the ignore list of the system-wide proxy config

2008-07-10 Thread acidix
Same Problem here.

Further description:
 - When adding ignored hosts like "*.mycompany.com" Firefox respects the setting
 - When adding a subnet to be ignored like "10.0.0.0/8" Firefox completely
ignores it

Seems to be a Firefox / Mozilla / Gnome related issue because I also
notice it using Gentoo.

[Bug 128673] Re: unable to open fullscreen application

2008-07-10 Thread Harald Sitter
What graphics card and driver are you using?
This behavior is actually a result of crashing X which is probably related to
the fullscreen apps which are really fullscreen opengl/sdl apps causing the
driver AND/OR X to go crazy.

Please try to start nexuiz in non-fullscreen mode (there should be some
howto in the nexuiz wiki) if your X crashes in non-fullscreen as well,
then this is not a KDE issue but something on a lower graphics level.

[Bug 164675] Re: X doesnt start at startup

2008-07-10 Thread Harald Sitter
This is most probably an issue with the nvidia driver. Still, Kubuntu
8.04 comes with a feature called bulletproof-X which means that even if
the nvidia driver is stupid again and wants to stop you from using KDE,
X will fallback to either nv or vesa (i.e. lowlevel) so you have basic
functionality to restore some backup etc.

[Bug 196277] Re: [hardy] keyboard layout switching shortcut doesn't work after reboot

2008-07-10 Thread svaens
Not sure what you say has been fixed (geez this is a long running bug report)
but since this is a duplicate bug of a bug that I have experienced (and still
am experiencing in up-to-date hardy) I will give my short two cents.

On up-to-date hardy as of 10/07/2008, I cannot (using keyboard
combination alt - alt ) change my keyboard from US to DE(US English
keyboard to German Keyboard) however, I was always able to change from
DE to US using the same key combination. In other words, It would only
work ONE WAY.

For ME, the SHIFT-SHIFT combination works perfectly. Now I can switch
both ways (US to DE, and back again - DE to US).

For me it is only the Alt - Alt key combination that continues not to
work to this day.

[Bug 247476] [NEW] Backlight brightness set to maximum at various events

2008-07-10 Thread Tim Richardson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

My Toshiba Satellite U400 has an Intel GM965 card.

I am using hardy with proposed updates, and I usually run two screens.

At various events, the LCD backlight is set to maximum, which is level
7.

One event is when the laptop lid is reopened.
I can also cause this bug by

xset dpms force on

Another event that causes the problem is when I start a virtual machine in
virtualbox (go figure)
If I run lshal -m I see nothing happening when the virtual machine starts, yet
the brighness changes. So I think it is a problem with the video driver.

I can stop it happening by blacklisting the video module.
But then I have no acpi control over brightness. I can manually change it via
the hotkeys. This is what I do currently, since fully reliable manual control
is better than LCD brightness resets.

[Bug 191627] Re: terminator crashed with GError in reconfigure_vte()

2008-07-10 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
This is fixed in 0.9 available from http://ppa.launchpad.net/gnome-
terminator/ubuntu .

I did the following test:
gconftool-2 --type string --set
/apps/gnome-terminal/profiles/Default/use_theme_colors test

0.8.1 crashes with the error above but 0.9 doesn't.

Thanks for your help

I was using an ipv6 tunnel via the tspc package. I do not know what impact this

[Bug 247475] [NEW] Backlight brightness level reverts to default after lid re-open

2008-07-10 Thread John Karp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acpi

I have a Lenovo T61, and I can set the backlight levels just fine with
the special keys. However, whenever I close and re-open the lid, the
brightness level returns to the default, which is very dim. The
brightness level should be preserved instead.

I have the GM965/GL960 Intel graphics controller.

[Bug 213532] Re: Need textured-video - No video when using window transparency.

2008-07-10 Thread Xepra

I tried enabling the TexturedVideo, but it caused my CPU to max out on an HD
video... The only reason I mention this is because Xorg uses about 7 times
more cpu with poorer picture quality than the same video being played with X11.

For comparison:

Xv uses about 40% (35% vlc, 5% Xorg) of my cpu on average while playing a 720p
x264 video
X11 uses about 50% (35% vlc, 15% Xorg) playing the same video (but with all
those nifty compiz effects working fine)
With TexturedVideo enabled and the default output (I am assuming Xv?) it used
100% of the cpu, mostly Xorg I believe. I think VLC was not receiving enough
cpu time to even decode the video properly, hence the poorer picture quality.

Notably these are amplified numbers (and differences) since it was an HD
video; lower resolution videos do not use anywhere near this much CPU.

In other words TexturedVideo is not a viable option. Is there anyway to
set the default video output for all of Ubuntu to use X11 video output
by default? Or do we have to set the default program by program?

Also, will the performance of TexturedVideo depend on video
card/drivers? Regardless, due to its poor performance, I would say it
probably should not be enabled by default on ibex (unless of course it
is only enabled for higher end cards...).

[Bug 222796] Re: Brightness up not generating ACPI event on Thinkpad T43p, T42, X31, X40

2008-07-10 Thread Joel Ebel
I'm reassigning this to the hotkey-setup package, as the hotkey-setup
init script is likely the best place to fix this. /proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey
initializes to 0x008c7fff, and the hotkey-setup init script only
modifies it to 0x00ff7fff, leaving the missing bit as the one
controlling the brightness up button. In gutsy, the thinkpad_acpi
module appears to initialize the value differently, so the brightness
keys work by default. Strangely it appears that the hotkey-setup would
enable all the hotkeys if you had intel, ati, or radeon drivers set up
in your xorg.conf, but otherwise only the top 8 bits of the mask. I
don't find a good explanation for this behavior. On my T43p, the
default xorg.conf doesn't identify any driver, so this doesn't happen.
Nor does it happen if I enable fglrx, which matches none of intel, ati,
or radeon, and again it doesn't enable all hotkeys. I'd like to
understand why this line is restricted to specific xorg video drivers.

[Bug 247469] [NEW] nautilus takes a while to load up a directory with a lot of images sorted by modification date

2008-07-10 Thread Amr Hassan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

when i try to open my images directory which is a really huge folder
full of images and subdirectories sorted by modification date, it takes
forever for nautilus to finish loading all the files and their
thumbnails. while it's loading them, the already-loaded thumbnails keep
moving around in every direction rendering the whole window useless for
about a minute or so till it all finishes loading..

when i tried to load the same folder in thunar after sorting by
modification date as well, it didn't take any time at all and the folder
loaded up in a second.. the thumbnails were probably all already cached,
but still that didn't stop nautilus from going crazy every time i try to
open the images folder again..

[Bug 243132] Re: Please merge checkinstall 1.6.1-6 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2008-07-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package checkinstall - 1.6.1-7ubuntu1

---
checkinstall (1.6.1-7ubuntu1) intrepid; urgency=low

  * Merge from debian unstable, remaining changes (LP: #243132):
- Use /usr/bin/which instead of which.
- add make to Depends, checkinstall doesn't work without it.
- Modify Maintainer value to match Debian-Maintainer-Field Spec

checkinstall (1.6.1-7) unstable; urgency=high

  * Use mktemp instead of awk magic to create temporary directories.
The original implementation had a race condition that allowed for a
symlink attack. This is security related, so set urgency to high.

checkinstall (1.6.1-6) unstable; urgency=low

  * Use the new Vcs-* fields.
  * Do not ship empty directories.
  * Use $(MAKE) instead of make in the makefile
  * Support Provides: field in debian.
  * Depend on dpkg-dev, since we use dpkg-architecture
(Closes: #484828)
  * Move url to the Homepage field.
  * Convert debian/copyright to UTF-8.
  * Bump standards version to 3.8.0 (no changes needed).

[Bug 247465] [NEW] Mesa i915 (intel video) driver crash

Managed to produce this error consistently using Alien Arena from SVN and map

[Bug 201777] Re: Not working routes with TAP device

2008-07-10 Thread John Pearson
I can confirm this behaviour; I'm a Debian user but have used the Ubuntu
source to build network-manager-openvpn.

I'm using OpenVPN with a tap interface to create a bridged
configuration; everything works fine when stopping and restarting
OpenVPN by hand, but the network-manager plugin treats the TAP device
like a point-to-point interface, and ignores options pushed by the
server that are designed to set up the appropriate routes.

My server config for this client includes the options
  ifconfig-push rose 255.255.255.0
  push "redirect-gateway def1"
('rose' resolves to the intended IP, 192.168.113.224)

Here's the routing table I get:
  # route -n
  Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric RefUse Iface
  203.122.249.19 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.255 UGH 0 00 wlan1
  192.168.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 00 wlan1
  192.168.254.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 00 br1
  0.0.0.00.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 U 0 00 tap1

But this is what it should be:
  # route -n
  Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric RefUse Iface
  203.122.249.19 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.255 UGH 0 00 wlan1

Note that I only see one error, although the directives specified by the
server should result in 3 routes being added (rather than the 1 bogus
Point-to-pint style default route which I end up with).

This appears to be an upstream bug and there appear to be several
duplicates in launchpad, but there doesn't appear to have been any
movement on it; I'd be very interested to see it addressed, because it's
one of the principal roadblocks which currently prevent us from
recommending or offering Ubuntu to our corporate clients for deployment
on laptops - they currently use Windows XP with "direct" OpenVPN support
(i.e., just running the OpenVPN service with X.509 certificates managed
by the MS Certificate Store), which "just works" in this configuration.

[Bug 203037] Re: [hardy] alien-arena crashed during map download

2008-07-10 Thread Derek Price
Yes, the version of AA you have packaged with Hardy is at least a year
out of date. There is a whole category of maps (they usually end in
"2k8" because the AA 7.mumble release was branded "2008") that the 6.10
AA crashes after reading, and they are run on about half the servers on
the net right now.

All the instructions i found on the net for building AA dpkgs referenced
sources for 6.10, which may be why you guys are behind. i'm not sure
how to build a dpkg, and I couldn't find anyone on the AA IRC channel
who knew how (only one claimed to be using Linux), but i managed to
download and build (without dpkgs) the latest AA from SVN
and it works great (I last
updated and tested a fresh build a few hours ago).

The AA developers are currently recommending the SVN build for
performance reasons on IRC, but I know little about any release
schedules.

[Bug 79364] Re: apt-build has a critical failure before even managing to download source packages

2008-07-10 Thread vestel
Another time the bug was found on hardy

apt-build was working normally, until the update-manager updated it to

$ apt-build -v
apt-build version 0.12.31ubuntu1

Since that, I got the next problem:

$ sudo apt-build source mysql-server
Missing source package name for source_by_source().

$ sudo apt-build install mysql-server
mysql-server will not be built because it doesn't have a source package.
Missing source package name for source_by_source().

[Bug 246461] Re: package new upstream e2fsprogs 1.41

2008-07-10 Thread Shirish Agarwal
** Summary changed:

- package new upstream e2fsprogs 1.41-WIP-0707
+ package new upstream e2fsprogs 1.41

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: e2fsprogs

- Here's the changelog from upstream
+ Changelog from sourceforge.net
+
+ https://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=612695
+
+ E2fsprogs 1.41 (July 10, 2008)
+ ==
+
+ Add support for ext4 filesystem features, in particular extents,
+ uninit_bg, flex_bg, huge_file, and dir_nlink features. Also add
+ support for checking journal checksums. Debugfs will print new
+ superblock and inode fields that were defined for ext4. For example,
+ the nanosecond and i_version fields of an inode, and the
+ s_min_extra_isize and s_wanted_extra_isize fields from the superblock.
+ Note: Resize2fs doesn't currently support the combination of flex_bg
+ and !resize_inode. (Addresses Debian Bug: #388452, #425477)
+
+ Tune2fs can support migrating a filesystem from using 128 byte inodes
+ to 256 byte inodes, so it can take advantage of the full features of
+ ext4.
+
+ Add support for "undo" support. E2fsck and mke2fs can optionally
+ record an undo log which can replayed by the program e2undo.
+
+ E2fsck could damage a filesystem by trying to relocate inode tables
+ due to corrupted block group descriptors, where the attempted inode
+ table relocation would do far more harm than good. E2fsck has been
+ fixed to detect this these sorts of corrupted block group descriptors
+ much earlier in e2fsck processing, so it can try to use the backup
+ superblock and block group descriptors first. This should be a much
+ better strategy for recovering these types of corrupted filesystems.
+ (Addresses Sourceforge Bug: #1840291)
+
+ E2fsck will display a more understandable message when the last check
+ field in the superblock is in the future. (Addresses Debian Bug:
+ #446005).
+
+ E2fsck now performs more extensive and careful checks of extended
+ attributes stored in the inode.
+
+ Enhance mke2fs to print a more explanatory error message when
+ ext2fs_get_device_size() returns EFBIG. (Addresses Debian Bug:
+ #488663)
+
+ Fix mke2fs to use a default block size of 4k when formatting an
+ external journal device. This is done by using a fixed filesystem
+ type list that consists only of the single filesystem type "journal"
+ when looking up configuration keys in /etc/mke2fs.conf. (Addresses
+ Debian Bug: #488663)
+
+ Speed up how mke2fs writes the journal data blocks by writing the disk
+ blocks in larger chunks.
+
+ Fix blkid handling of stale devices. Fix a bug which could cause a
+ core dump while garbage collecting the blkid cache, and assure that
+ blkid_find_dev_with_tag() never returns a non-existent device.  Also,
+ if a filesystem is found at a new /dev location, eliminate any
+ duplicate stale entries which can not be verified.
+ (Addresses-Debian-Bugs: #487758, #487783)
+
+ Add more paranoid checks for LVM volumes and swap partitions in
+ blkid's probe function, to reduce the chances of false positives.
+
+ The mke2fs program now has a much more sophisticated system for
+ controlling configuration parameters of a newly created filesystem
+ based on a split filesystem and usage type system. The -t option to
+ mke2fs was a deprecated alias to -c; it now specifies a filesystem
+ type (ext2, ext3, ext4, etc.), while the -T option can now be a comma
+ separated usage list. The filesystem type information and type
+ information is used to extract configuration parameters from the
+ /etc/mke2fs.conf file.
+
+ The mke2fs program will no longer complain and request the -f option
+ when the user tries to create a filesystem with greater than 2**31
+ blocks.
+
+ When creating a filesystem for the GNU Hurd use a fs-type of Hurd and
+ adjust the mke2fs.conf file so filesystems for the Hurd are created
+ with a blocksize of 4096 and inode size of 128, which is all it knows
+ how to handle. (Addresses Debian Bug: #471977)
+
+ Mke2fs will always make sure that lost+found always has at least 2
+ blocks, even for filesystems with very large blocksizes (i.e., 64kb).
+
+ Resize2fs will now print the minimum needed filesystem size if given
+ the -P option, and will resize the filesystem to the smallest possible
+ size if given the -M option.
+
+ Fix resize2fs to clean up the resize_inode if all of the reserved gdt
+ blocks are consumed during an off-line resize.
+
+ The "ls" command in debugfs now supports the -p option, which causes
+ it to quote the filenames so that spaces or tabs in directory entries
+ are easily visible. (Addresses Red Hat Bugzilla: #149480; Addresses
+ Sourceforge Feature Request: #1201667)
+
+ Fix a potential off-by-one buffer oveflow in the fs_device_name in an
+ e2image file.
+
+ The chattr program will return a non-zero exit code in case of
+ failures, and error messages can be suppressed with the -f option.
+ (Addresses Red Hat Bugzilla: #180596)
+
+ Fix a bug in badblocks

[Bug 247461] [NEW] disk burned from ubuntu 8.04.1 dvd image gives invalid cd detected in windows

2008-07-10 Thread vito
Public bug reported:

I've downloaded ubuntu-8.04.1-dvd-i386.iso image from here:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/8.04/release/

I run md5sum on downloaded image and had a positive result.

However after a dvd was burned Windows produces "Invalid CD Detected"
error on any DVD load. Though if ignoring the error message, the DVD is
accessible through Windows Explorer, on any attempt to run either
autorun.inf or umenu.exe manualy the same error is produced.

I get the same poor result burning the image on two (2) different boxes
with different hardware sets, DVD burners (one from NEC another from
Sony) and burning software (Brasero, Gnome CD Creator, Nero and Dell
Sony Roxio Suite).

I burned all DVDs with both available in Nero speeds - 6x and 8x. I
also used 2 different speeds while burning with Sony software.

In all tests I used 3 different types of media from different
manufacturers: Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 8X, Optodisk DVD-RW and Verbatim
DVD+RW.

I also burned the image producing the same error under both Windows XP
SP3 and Hardy Heron 8.04.

For the test purposes I burned ubuntu-8.04-dvd-i386.iso image (previous
version) on the same set of hardware, using same software and media as above,
and under the same OSs.

The "Invalid CD Detected" problem did not show up with any of the DVDs
burned.

see this bug report for more details:

[Bug 247460] [NEW] logcheck postfix/anvil ignore bug

2008-07-10 Thread JP Vossen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: logcheck-database

The Hardy logcheck-database /etc/logcheck/ignore.d.server/postfix file has this:
^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ postfix/anvil\[[0-9]+\]: statistics:
max (message|recipient|connection) (count|rate) [/[:digit:]s]+ for
\(([.:[:xdigit:]]+)?(smtp(s)?|25|submission|587):[.:[:xdigit:]]+\) at \w{3} [
:0-9]{11}$

But that fails on certain logs, resulting in unnecessary logcheck alerts such
as:
System Events
=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Jul 10 19:48:50 hostname postfix/anvil[8482]: statistics: max
connection count 1 for (smtp:unknown) at Jul 10 19:45:05

Adding an "|unknown" regex alternation solves the problem:
^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ postfix/anvil\[[0-9]+\]: statistics:
max (message|recipient|connection) (count|rate) [/[:digit:]s]+ for
\(([.:[:xdigit:]]+)?(smtp(s)?|25|submission|587):([.:[:xdigit:]]+|unknown)\) at
\w{3} [ :0-9]{11}$

Test run:

## Original line
# grep 'statistics: max (' postfix
^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ postfix/anvil\[[0-9]+\]: statistics: max
(message|recipient|connection) (count|rate) [/[:digit:]s]+ for
\(([.:[:xdigit:]]+)?(smtp(s)?|25|submission|587):[.:[:xdigit:]]+\) at \w{3} [
:0-9]{11}$

## Test run
# su -s /bin/bash -c "/usr/sbin/logcheck -tsol /tmp/logtest" logcheck
This email is sent by logcheck. If you wish to no-longer receive it,
you can either deinstall the logcheck package or modify its
configuration file (/etc/logcheck/logcheck.conf).

System Events
=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Jul 10 19:48:50 hostname postfix/anvil[8482]: statistics: max connection count

Jul 10 19:48:50 hostname postfix/anvil[8482]: statistics: max connection count
1 for (smtp:unknown) at Jul 10 19:45:05

## Fix it
# vi postfix

## Fixed line
# grep 'statistics: max (' postfix
^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ postfix/anvil\[[0-9]+\]: statistics: max
(message|recipient|connection) (count|rate) [/[:digit:]s]+ for
\(([.:[:xdigit:]]+)?(smtp(s)?|25|submission|587):([.:[:xdigit:]]+|unknown)\) at
\w{3} [ :0-9]{11}$

## Test run

2008-07-10 Thread Micah Cowan
> That means that the sentence in the man page

Well, "as determined by the specifications that Wget understands" is of
course implied. When Wget was originally written, CSS hadn't been
invented yet. So the statement was true for virtually all websites until
CSS came into use, at which point Wget was obsolete, and unable to
download "all files that are necessary". However, it will never be
completely true: after all, some "needed" items might be requested by
JavaScript, which Wget can't parse. Or new standard could come into play
sometime, just as CSS did in the late 90s.

[Bug 231472] Re: Disabled buttons and an "inactive" address bar

2008-07-10 Thread Rohit Arondekar
Hello,
The problem happens when you use Firefox as a root user. This has happened to
me twice. You can fix the problem by creating a new profile using the Profile
Manager of Firefox. However you will loose extensions and bookmarks and all
your settings. Instead I found a simpler way - the problem apparently is that
the file "places.sqlite-journal" in your 'corupted' profile folder gets
literally owned by root. That is the file owner is now root - so to solve this
problem just run -

sudo chown
/home//.mozilla/firefox//places.sqlite-
journal

That solved my problem - I am sure that that is the only file that gets
affected by running Firefox 3 as root.

[Bug 173966] Re: java plugin not working in firefox 3 on ubuntu 8.04

2008-07-10 Thread James Stansell
Alfas, the only java plugin available for 64-bit systems is icedtea-
gcjwebplugin. Some applets work, but it's not surprising if the ones
you are interested in don't work.

The only option currently available, as far as I know, is to run a
hybrid 32bit system. I haven't done that myself, but the 64-bit users
forum at ubuntuforums.org would be a good place to start.
