I am trying to upgarde gutsy to hardy behind a proxy server that requires authentication username and password. I can update the packages using the global proxy setting of gnome and even can wget in the terminal with that setting. Even the synaptic is working fine with its own proxy configuration. Hi, I just tried to reproduce this problem (thanks for the instructions and the codectest package) but it worked for me. I started with wheelie.mov and that asked me for codecs, but started playing right after they were installed. Then I clicked on the other ones and it seem to be working too. The next that required codecs was the .mpg one, but after installing them (the codecs) it worked right away too. If you still have a VM with hardy (maybe with a snapshot) could you please check if the order of the files is important for the failure or something like this? It was caused by removing execute permission from the gksu binary in /usr/bin. (I removed that permission bit, not some part of the Ubuntu system) The stack trace gathered by the crash reporter tool shows a different starting point than the one in #219518. Only tangential to this, gksu usually fails to display the first time update-manager executes it. After I kill it, then retry the upgrade it works. I was experimenting to try find a resolution. Since I couldn't uninstall gksu, I removed the execute bit expecting udpate-manager to skip it and try gnomesu instead. That is how I arrived at this situation. Although update-manager is not responsible for my interference with the system, it shouldn't crash. It should catch the error and, at the very least, simply display an error message.
