Re: [Bug 205093] Re: [Hardy] Screen detection problems with xorg, nvidia and an Acer AL2216W

Well, sorry... I know this page :(
Actually I remembered I couldn't answer the questions of sudo
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg even if it should be obvious.

I'll retry late and mark the questions I don't know how to answer.

[Bug 269656] Re: AN IRRELEVANT LICENSE IS PRESENTED TO YOU FREE-OF-CHARGE ON STARTUP

2008-09-20 Thread ayaray
kafpauzo
The GPL does allow trademark restrictions. You'd need to find software that is
published under a license that forbids trademark restrictions.

A licence can only declare rules (it can't forbid or restrict anything,
except the authors of the licence). A licence can restrict only the
author of the licence. Many software companies are abide by the
satements of their licences. They can't restrict you from copying and
modifying, but they are abide by their words: they will fulfill
unfulfillable rules, either eternally pursuing pirates or breaking their
rules by not pursuing pirates. Ironically, in the Middle Ages you could
buy an indulgence, and now you can buy rights and say all rights
reserved, when no rights are really reserved.

[Bug 272435] [NEW] Dolphin does not mount fixed hard drive - partitions

2008-09-20 Thread Arpan Patelia
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dolphin

I have 2 SCSI hard disk drives. Both have multiple partitions. While
running Kubuntu 8.10 alpha 6(installed on disk), dolphin displays all
partitions in Places bar but when I click on any of them, it does not
mount it, in fact nothing happens. No mount-point directory is created
under /media. Same behavior was observed in alpha 5. Dolphin version is
1.1, KDE 4.1.1. I tried both 32bit and 64bit versions of intrepid.

The drives are mounted correctly when I do so using live cd but when I
install it on the disk, it stops mounting the partitions.

If I plug in a USB stick and mount it using device-notifier plasmoid, it
is mounted perfectly.

[Bug 6765] Re: xfree86: material under GLX Public License and SGI Free Software License B is not DFSG-free

2008-09-20 Thread Matthew Flaschen
That's incorrect. Version 1.1 says, SGI may publish revised and/or new
versions of the License
from time to time, each with a distinguishing version number. Once Covered Code
has been
published under a particular version of the License, Recipient may, for the
duration of the
license, continue to use it under the terms of that version, or choose to use
such Covered Code
under the terms of any subsequent version published by SGI.

That means /any/ covered 1.1 code (regardless of owner) can now be used
under either 1.1. or 2.0. However, the separate GLX Public License
remains an issue.

Re: [Bug 269656] Re: AN IRRELEVANT LICENSE IS PRESENTED TO YOU FREE-OF-CHARGE ON STARTUP

2008-09-20 Thread Creak
Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Let's imagine we're *not* talking about Google and Mozilla. I definitely
won't trust an Open Source software that is offered to me with a
pre-accepted EULA.
The reason is simple: it's only about trust. W'e ve seen, more than once,
companies that suddenly made their patented technology into profit (GIF,
JPG, MP3, ...). Thus as long as the company doesn't write clearly that it
will keep its technology free as in freedom, we can consider it potentially
closed.

So, even if I trust Google and even more Mozilla, I still want to be
reassured that what I'm using will not be suddenly shutdown or not free (as
in beer). And the only way to do that is to have a compatible free software
license [1]. Simple as that!

That said, if the services are disabled by default but that the first
Firefox page advices me to enable them. As far as I trust Ubuntu and that I
know Canonical point of view about freedom, I'll do it! But this way I don't
have the impression that someone is twisting my arm.

[Bug 272446] [NEW] Envyng doesn't install ATI fglrx in INTREPID

2008-09-20 Thread Eduardo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: envyng-core

Hi. I have installed the latest alpha of Ubuntu Intrepid and i have
tried to install the drivers for my ATI Mobility Radeo X600 with Envyng,
the latest 8.532-0ubuntu2, but Xserver don't run when i restart my
computer.

I have blue screen (on restart), that it can't start xserver or similar.
I attach the log of this error.

I haven't modified ubuntu since the installation. i have only tried to
install the drivers, only with envyng, but i can't. In addition, when i
use envyng -t, option 3, the program shows the version of the fglrx
package (8.532-0ubuntu2), and it shows that is compatible with my
computer and ubuntu version.

Thanks

[Bug 272445] [NEW] composited volume mute icon should have a red cross

2008-09-20 Thread Nicolò Chieffo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

conme-control-center 2.23.90-0ubuntu11

This problem is only present when compiz/metacity_composited is active!
When I hit the mute button a nice transparent OSD icon appears, but in my
opinion it's not clear at all.
The only difference between mute and not_mute are 3 waves coming out from the
speaker.
it could be more clear if the mute icon had a red cross near the speaker,
exactly as the not composited OSD icon.

[Bug 272443] [NEW] Please have emacs-nox alternative

2008-09-20 Thread Reuben Thomas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: emacs-snapshot

It's good that one can install a non-X version of Emacs, as it starts up
faster than the gtk version. Hence, it would be good to be able to
always start emacs-nox regardless of which version one has installed.
Could an emacs-nox alternative be arranged, like the emacs alternative?
Obviously, only -nox versions would qualify (whereas a -nox version of
emacs is a perfectly good emacs alternative).

[Bug 220493] Re: [Hardy][Regression] dmraid45 target missing in latest kernel

2008-09-20 Thread Jaroslav Sedlacek
Unfortunately the update is not in hardy updates. I went yesterday
through all the steps to install ubuntu on FakeRaid (Intel ICHR8/9 with
raid 5 volume) and still did not succeed. The dm-raid45 works fine with
CD. But the kernel that installs via:

apt-get install linux-image-2.6.24-19-generic

does not contain the dm-raid45 module. On cd, it is located in
/lib/modules/2.6.24-19-generic/ubuntu, but in the installed system,
there is no directory ubuntu under the kernel modules. Maybe I need to
install some other package beside the linux-image

Yes.

The two remaining fles under GLX Public license are these:

GL/glx/glxext.c
hw/dmx/glxProxy/glxext.c

Presumably they will also be relicensed, the question is how - SGI's
press release doesn't mention this. I've emailed the FSF asking if they
know the details.

[Bug 272449] [NEW] Ugly system tray icons/kicker falling partly away/Inverted colors kickoff

2008-09-20 Thread dreamsare4living
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kicker

Ugly squares system tray.

Since I have been using kubuntu intrepid alpha 6, I noticed that my
systemtray icons are surrounded by ugly squares (screenshot attached).
Sometimes the icons fall away completely, showing squares with my
wallpaper through it. It looks like a transparancy problem to me.

Kicker falling away partly.

Sometimes when I use GTK applications such as Mozilla Thunderbird or
when I use openoffice programs different parts of kicker are falling
away, showing my wallpaper only. This happens frequently and randomly to
the clock, systemtray, windowswitcher and the taskmanager. Sometimes
even my whole wallpaper falls away showing a black screen only until I
minimize or close the application.

Inverted kickoff colors.

When using the same applications my kickoff is sometimes displaying
inverted colors.

I am working on a Acer Aspire 9302AWSMi Laptop, AMD 64 processor, Nvidia
GeForce Go 6100 videocard. The problems happend both in Kubuntu Intrepid
Alpha 5 and Alpha 6.

Unfortunatly I was not able to make more screenshots of the inverted
colors and kicker falling away. I hope these problems can be fixed. I
always used Gnome before, but I love the new KDE 4.1 and really want to
use it for a longer time, but I will be forced to go back to Gnome when
these problems continue.

There is no need to use GNOME's keyboard configuration tool to change
the session's keyboard layout; simply select it in the installer and
it'll be changed on the fly to what you select.

[Bug 224126] Re: brasero does not check integrity

2008-09-20 Thread Dan Andresan
using brasero 0.8.2 on intrepid:

the integrity did not run, because imediately after burning the disc
brasero failed with: cannot mount, maximum retries reached. it did not
try to eject the tray after burning. brasero-debug1.txt attached

also, running a manual check, it was not able to verify the disc, it said
operation not supported.
I had to select a checksum file (the file created on the disc) and there it
failed again (there are some corrupted file on the disc). Of course there are
no corrupted files. I guess the problem here is that it made a checksum of the
image, instead of checksum of each file... brasero-debug2.txt attached

we are approaching deadline and this brasero is a shame, sorry to say. I
wouldn't like to use k3b (I try to use Gnome only) but while I was using
it, it was perfect, I was not able to report a bug. Venting off, thanks
:)

Could we somehow raise the visibility of this bug? It has a low
importance? Aren't people hit it? Maybe they don't burn DVDs...

[Bug 272452] [NEW] [Hardy] Set mount point for USB drive, fails to mount, no way to fix

2008-09-20 Thread Shaun Crampton
Public bug reported:

When I plug in my USB drive it is mounted as /media/disk-X where X is a number.
I wanted to change this so that it asways mounted at /media/passport so I
  - right clicked the mounted icon
  - selected properties
  - selected the Volume tab
  - typed /media/passport
  - closed the dialog.

I then created the /media/passport directory as root and then reinserted
the USB drive. I was greeted by an error message, telling me the drive
couldn't be mounted (screenshot attached).

There are several problems here:
  - There is now no way to remove the bad setting. Since the drive isn't
mounted it doesn't get an icon to examine the properties.
  - The error message is poor and technical and its title bar is empty.
  - The properties dialog UI is poor in several ways:
- It doesn't validate the settings.
- It doesn't give help or examples (I assumed that a mount point would be a
path but it sounds like it can't contain a slash so that must be a mistake).

[Bug 272453] [NEW] LoCo admin issue

2008-09-20 Thread pst
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I don't if this is the right place for my question/problem, but well
here it is:

The ubunut-lu LoCo and mailinglist was administered by Bob Hentges
(email address hidden), but unfortunately he is gone... (rest in
peace)... and we (the other members) are wondering how we can change the
admin for this LoCo.

I'm volunteering to do the job during the transition phase, until we
find a new admin for the team.

I hope someone can help me find a solution, or at least give me some
hints on how to proceed.

Thanks and regards,

[Bug 270328] Re: libpam-runtime uninitialized values

2008-09-20 Thread منذر طه
My current ecryptfs-utils version is 53-1ubuntu8
I didn't try to enable the kerberos_example profile or run auth-client-config
manually.
Now, after reinstalling that ecryptfs-utils package, I managed to log again to
my system which is why I believe it's related somewho to the problem. More
important, now my common-auth is different. It conains:

#
# /etc/pam.d/common-auth - authentication settings common to all services
#
# This file is included from other service-specific PAM config files,
# and should contain a list of the authentication modules that define
# the central authentication scheme for use on the system
# (e.g., /etc/shadow, LDAP, Kerberos, etc.). The default is to use the
# traditional Unix authentication mechanisms.
#
# As of pam 1.0.1-5, this file is managed by pam-auth-update by default.
# To take advantage of this, it is recommended that you configure any
# local modules either before or after the default block, and use
# pam-auth-update to manage selection of other modules. See
# pam-auth-update(8) for details.

# here are the per-package modules (the Primary block)
auth[success=1 default=ignore]  pam_unix.so nullok_secure
# here's the fallback if no module succeeds
authrequisite pam_deny.so
# prime the stack with a positive return value if there isn't one already;
# this avoids us returning an error just because nothing sets a success code
# since the modules above will each just jump around
authrequiredpam_permit.so
# and here are more per-package modules (the Additional block)
authoptionalpam_ecryptfs.so unwrap
# end of pam-auth-update config

But dpkg-reconfigure libpam-runtime still gives the same errors
