Mariano,

Yes, it gets tested on intrepid first, to check that it doesn't make
anything else explode. Obviously, having things exploding in stable,
especially LTS releases, is very bad.

I presume this will get updated in stable releases very quickly.

[Bug 277770] Re: Please sync sugar 0.82.0-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

2008-10-07 Thread Morgan Collett
Debian do not want to provide the sugar-activities metapackage. In the
hardy packages, this is produced by the sugar sourcepackage.

My intention is to add the metapackage back to debian's sugar package
once we have it synced - unfortunately it is a deviation but a very
minor one.

In the long term, we will have more activities (apps) packaged in Debian
(and some are only in Ubuntu but we will submit them to Debian) and then
having a metapackage that installs *everything* will no longer be
appropriate, but upstream is producing a set of activities which are
developed in tight coordination with the Sugar platform, called
Fructose, whereas other activities are community-developed on their own
schedule (and code-named Honey). This is reflected on our
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SugarTeam/Packages page. So in intrepid+1 we may
replace sugar-activities with sugar-fructose as a metapackage which
pulls in the "upstream blessed" activities.

For now I would prefer to continue using sugar-activities as a patch
carried over from the hardy packages - but we will continue working with
Debian to feed our patches and suggestions back to them and minimise the
delta.

Morgan

Re: [Bug 277477] Re: Intrepid upgrade could not install ca-certificates

2008-10-07 Thread Smotsie
Hi Michael,

Sorry, but after filing that bug report, things went a lot worse. I was
unable to get Intrepid to run properly on my hardware - X was a complete
nightmare. It started but then locked everything up apart from a moveable
mouse (numlock, ctrl-alt-del didn't work!). There was no panel and
ctrl-alt-1 didn't bring up a command line session. I went through the
"recovery" process, tryingto fix X and various other options, but no dice.
In exasperation I blew away the installation and started from scratch with
an Intrepid Kubuntu CD. That too failed in a similar way, with a panel, but
numlock locked and no real response. Finally I went back to Kubuntu 8.04
KDE4 Remix so I can get on with life. I would be happy to help resolve this,
as in a short while 8.10 will be released and I will be left behind. My PC
is a Dell Optiplex 755 with NVidia GeForce 8400 GS video card.

Cheers

Simon West

Perhaps I'm missing the point here but it seems you have altered the network

I have a static network here and this broke it totally.
As of today NetworkManager is unusable for me using any of the suggestions here.

Perhaps this helps for some thing but I can't for the life of me see what
situation these changes was supposed to address.
I'm no networking expert though so that is not surprising :).

There is on new version of gnome-system-tools at the moment (2.22.1). I
will update it soon. But regarding of the news file
(http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/gnome-system-tools/2.22/gnome-
system-tools-2.22.1.news), this will not fix this issue.

After some investigation, this problem seems to not be in gnome-control-center
package but in tzdata one (cf details of the bug).
Please link this bug to tzdata package as well.

2008-10-07 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Please split this bug into three seperate bugs and mark this as a
duplicate of one of them. Then each can be marked as it is fixed. The
'Help' icon in OOo 2.4 in Intrepid is currently the same as the desktop
theme - so I think that one is fixed.

[Bug 279525] [NEW] liveCD install-option X bug?

2008-10-07 Thread kforum
Public bug reported:

kubuntu 8.10 intrepid, liveCD ver.Oct, 1st.

im not sure what happened since i have never seen this before, but when i
select the install kubuntu option(the one in the boot menu, before entering the
liveCD kubuntu) the screen shows weird colors and RGBs all over it, with some
strange effects.
it stays that way for good, making it so that the only way you can install the
OS is through the conventional -> boot the liveCD->test the system->select
install while inside the guaranteed/working environment.

i use a nvidia 8600m GT, and a fast system.

[Bug 279524] [NEW] pycentral can't handle filenames containing = signs

2008-10-07 Thread Sergio Gelato
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-central

Sometime between versions 0.5.12 (Debian etch) and 0.6.7ubuntu0.1 (hardy),
python-central was changed
to store a package manifest in /usr/share/pyshared-data/ and to use the
information in that file to create
the necessary symlinks at pkginstall time. The file is parsed using the
ConfigParser that ships with Python.
The regular expression used by this parser to split = lines can't
handle = signs in :
the first such sign is taken as the separator.

I have privately packaged PyRAF
(http://www.stsci.edu/resources/software_hardware/pyraf), which installs data
files in /usr/lib/python/site-packages/pyraf/clcache/. These files are
named after the MD5 sums of
their contents, Base64-encoded, complete with the trailing ==. When pycentral
pkginstall reads the
corresponding entries in the [files] section of
/usr/share/pyshared-data/python-pyraf, it strips the trailing ==
and creates the wrong symlinks as a result. (I can confirm that
/usr/share/pyshared-data/python-pyraf
contains all the = signs: each of the lines in question ends in ===f .)

My workaround for this problem was to move the directory with the offending
data files to /usr/lib/python-pyraf/
where they will no longer be handled by python-central. This seemed easier than
patching pycentral to handle the = signs correctly in the general case. (Can
one be sure that will never contain an
equals sign?) Still, this limitation on the filenames python-central can handle
is at least worth documenting.

[Bug 279519] [NEW] [regression] some usb devices don't works after upgrade to intrepid

2008-10-07 Thread Luca Ferretti
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu release: 8.10
Package version: dunno, something related to USB, maybe kernel

I've upgrade from hardy to intrepid (beta). Now some USB connected devices no
longer works as in stable release.

 ** WebCam **
Issue: the webcam seems recognized, but launching cheese no video is showed
(only the "test")

/var/log/messages related entries:
[ 3180.712307] usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
[ 3180.871934] usb 2-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

[ 3182.657436] usbcore: registered new interface driver sn9c102

** Bluetooht dongle **
Issue: plugging the dongle the applet is showed in notification area, and a new
tab for adapter appears in preferences dialog, but neither the file sending to
a device yet bonded on hardy nor the bonding of new devices can be performed.

/var/log/messages related entries:
[ 3140.052101] usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
[ 3150.219275] usb 2-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[ 3151.622242] Bluetooth: Generic Bluetooth USB driver ver 0.3
[ 3151.624979] usbcore: registered new interface driver btusb

** MTP audio player **
If I'm right, on Intrepid I should be able to manage MTP devices both in
computer:// location (through gvfs gphoto backend) and in Rhythmbox (libmpt, as
well as in current Hardy). The computer:// location totally ingores the
connected device. Rhythmbox takes a long long time to start (could be useful a
`rhythmbox --debug` output?) , shows the device on left pane, but can't list
files stored on audio player. I tried to copy a file over it, the action was
"performed" on rhythmbox ui, but no files was on player when I restarted it.
Morever, unplugging the player and pluggin it again, there is a strange
behavior. My mtp player has two "modes": when connectet to a computer USB port,
it shows the "USB connected" message on display and can both recharged and
synchronized; when connected to a power adepter shows "Charging" message, and
of course can't be synchronized. Only on first plug the device goes in proper
mode, subsequent re-plugs will put it in only-charge mode.
Finally it seems to "taint" the USB subsystem: plugging a working mass storage
pendrive after the MTP player, the automount no longer works.

/var/log/messages related entries on first plug:
[ 3722.416084] usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 5
[ 3722.595940] usb 2-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

/var/log/messages on second MTP device plug (yes, 4 new device messages, only
one plug action):
[ 4186.796080] usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 6
[ 4217.340086] usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 7
[ 4247.888143] usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 8
[ 4258.408079] usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 9

/var/log/messages on Mass Storage plug after MTP (yes, 4 new device messages,
only one plug action):
[ 4707.724074] usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 10
[ 4738.268173] usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 11
[ 4768.812084] usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 12
[ 4779.332077] usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 13

** Other USB stuff **
Keyboard and mouse works fine. Printer works fine. Same for mass storage
perdrive, well, if I plug them before the mtp player.

Deeper checks needed?

[Bug 279476] Re: Getting IM's with links to russion sites( .ru). Prefrences being reset to allow non buddies.

2008-10-07 Thread Mooncaller
Thanks Richard,

I replied to the email notice, but I have not seen it show up yet, so
I'll repeat myself.

I am using AIM. I've shut down Pidgin until I can get another system put
together for work.

I'm glad to here that the Pidgin dev site is not responsive due to
upgrades :) I am old fashioned and tend to think that the project should
deal with issues and not the distro. I have to remember how
sophisticated the organizations behind some distros have become. With
the time and effort Canonical has put in their product, it makes sense
that they should get the first bug report.

thx bob

[Bug 278875] Re: floppy module not loaded

2008-10-07 Thread Michael B. Trausch
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 255651 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/255651

  status confirmed
  affects ubuntu/module-init-tools
  affects ubuntu/udev
  affects ubuntu/linux-meta
  done

Hardy loaded the floppy driver automatically. Upon upgrading (well,
installing a new Intrepid system from the amd64 DVD ISO), I am no longer
able to mount my floppy or use mtools on it without first running
"modprobe floppy". So, something _HAS_ indeed changed, and it needs to
be fixed; regular users who have no knowledge of Linux kernel modules
will not be able to use their floppy drives. Of the types of computer
users I know, there are still several that use floppy disks for various
purposes because that's what they know. This change effectively makes
it impossible for people to use their built-in floppy drives, and I
can't upgrade anyone in my family to Intrepid without being there to
modify configuration files for them (they can't even punch a hole in a
firewall, and I live 800 miles away).

Re: [Bug 278488] Re: Network Manager 0.7 is unable to determine if the connection is local only or instead provides internet access

2008-10-07 Thread Luke12
This has all been verified with Hardy. If the problem with my wireless
network will go on until friday, I will be able to test this also with
Intrepid.

Step 1: I connect to the house wireless network, which currently
provides local access only, using NM 0.7
Step 2: Still using NM 0.7, I connect to a GSM network using a Vodafone
modem. This network provides Internet access.
Result: NM 0.7 is now connected to both Networks, the tray icon displays
the "connected to wireless network" status.

Actual result: NM is not able to understand if the network provides
internet or local only access. Moreover, it uses the wireless network
connection by default over the GSM one.
The net result is that while the wireless network is activated, I cannot
access the web (even if the system IS connected to the internet via
GSM). This applies to all Ubuntu programs, from cli to graphical ones.

Expected result: since only one of the two networks provides internet
access, I would expect NM to understand which one does, and use that
network to connect to the internet. E.g. under Windows Vista the
connection manager is able to understand which networks provide internet
access and which local only, and uses the right one.

I hope it is sufficiently clear. :-)

[Bug 278471] Re: Screen flickers with KDE4

2008-10-07 Thread Tormod Volden
This is the KDE equivalent to bug #245383. A component of KDE is calling
XRRGetScreenResources excessively. And for many cards/drivers/setups
this causes a screen flicker. Although some drivers, like -ati, have
been improved to avoid flickering in many cases, the best would be to
fix KDE in the same way as gtk+2.0 was fixed.

Yes, it's not a window manager, more of a platform. I have found several
minor things in Debian's packaging that can be improved, but none are
show stoppers. I'll send them patches.

[Bug 277492] Re: lwinet crashes when joining a windows domain with likewise

2008-10-07 Thread Thierry Carrez
There might be a case where get_sorted_dc_list can be called with null
arguments, resulting in the SIGSEGV.
In samba/source/libads/ldap.c (function ads_find_dc) :

---
if ( !got_realm && !lp_disable_netbios() ) {
  c_realm = ads->server.workgroup;
  if (!c_realm || !*c_realm) {
if ( use_own_domain )
  c_realm = lp_workgroup();
  }
  if ( !c_realm || !*c_realm ) {
DEBUG(0,("ads_find_dc: no realm or workgroup!  Don't know what to do\n"));
return NT_STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER; /* rather need MISSING_PARAMETER ... */
  }
}
realm = c_realm;
[...]
status = get_sorted_dc_list(realm, sitename, &ip_list, &count, got_realm);
---

The catch for the case *c_realm=null is inside the "if ( !got_realm &&
!lp_disable_netbios() )" test so if *c_realm=null, got_realm is false
and lp_disable_netbios() is true, you get SIGSEGV down the line...

Development release.

New plugin "obs" that handles opacity, brightness and saturation bindings
and matches.

Put unresponsive window greyout, including options to configure it, to
fade plugin.

Add "constant fade time" fade mode to fade plugin.

Removed opacity bindings and matches from core. Users that entered opacity
matches should enable the obs plugin and enter the matches there.

Enhanced timer infrastructure to allow synchronization of execution of
multiple timer callbacks.

Added matching for window's alpha channel (match type rgba=[0|1]).

Reflect new Metacity "spacer" button type in gtk-window-decorator.

Various bugfixes.

Translation updates.

The plugins and libcompizconfig do not have a NEWS file unfortunately
(just the git generated Changelog)

Oh, I see. But I don't really want to give DAC_OVERRIDE to cups-pdf,
it's crackful enough as it is, and DAC_OVERRIDE is very powerful. The
actual creation of ~/PDF works just fine for me (/home/martin/PDF), at
least it did in Hardy (we don't install cups-pdf by default any more).
Does it actually break for you now?

[Bug 269264] Re: rfkill switch on Intel 4965AGN wireless does not work in intrepid

2008-10-07 Thread Frits Jalvingh
Same problem here, on an Acer Aspire 9920. This always boots with the kill
switch ON (killed); the only way to get a connection is to first toggle the
switch and then removing and adding the iwlagn module. This worked properly on
Hardy.
What has changed is that with Hardy I got messages about "scan code xxx" in the
dmesg log when I toggled the kill switch. In Intrepid nothing is visible when I
toggle the switch.

[Bug 267917] Re: Intrepid: PDF-printer not recognized by Okular

2008-10-07 Thread Sokraates
Ubuntu introduced a separate, virtual PDF-printer in Gutsy Tribe 5
(http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/tribe5). Kubuntu also used it since
Gutsy, together with KDE 3.5.x, that is before Qt4 was used. So while
Qt4 may provide a fake PDF-printer, so does Ubuntu.

I haven't checked (because I don't know how), whether Kubuntu Intrepid
uses the Qt4 printer or the Ubuntu-one, however I suspect the latter,
since a folder ~/PDF is created. This folder was introduced in the
default settings of Gutsy because of the then new virual PDF printer,
which would print to ~/PDF by default.

In this case it would be worthwhile to check, whether Ubuntu's printer
also causes problems.

Regarding the importance, I think it should be set to "minor", since (in
my opinion) "wishlist" only applies to features which are missing, not
to those which have been disabled on purpose due to problems.

In any case, thank you for the explanantion.

[Bug 258743] Re: NM 0.7 Fails To Set Custom MTU

2008-10-07 Thread nullack
With the reports of this being fixed I retested it (Apologies to
Alexander I had been on holidays and was not able to look into this
previously). On revision:

network-manager:
  Installed: 0.7~~svn20081004t225044-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 0.7~~svn20081004t225044-0ubuntu1

I find that the MTU value can be changed, but again the MTU remains at
the previous value as shown by a "sudo ifconfig eth0" query".i.e.
Nothing actually changes. Reopening NM incorrectly shows the new MTU
value even though it has not been applied. If the user reboots the MTU
value gets reset to the original in NM forgetting the desired value.

This bug is not fixed.

[Bug 248056] Re: bluetooth still broken in hardy

2008-10-07 Thread techno-mole
hello, me again.

as its not really that long before intrepid is released (end of october) i took
the plunge to install the beta of intrepid, which went for the most part ok.
im sending this because ive been trying out bluetooth on intrepid, and it
works, although when i sent some pictures from my phone to the pc i couldnt
find them, it seems that the pictures go into a file called " kbluetooth4 "
which is hidden in the home directory.
the only issue i have is that if you rename the file you cant then send
anything from the phone, and i havent found the section that allows you to
select where pictures go when you send pictures etc

this by the way is using a default installation, i havent added anything
to it, so i guess if i install some bluetooth packages i will be able to
change the default file, or maybe i can create a symbolic link to the
file ?

but either way it works and thats progress :-)

[Bug 222163] Re: Xorg crashes when using two monitors set up by aticonfig (BigDesktop mode)

That's not the Ubuntu team team which is to blame but the Ekiga one.

devloppement versions during this cycle so the needed depencies were not
packaged and Ekiga 3 was not extensively tested in Intrepid.

[Bug 279539] [NEW] gdm crashes on login when there is an error in /etc/profile

2008-10-07 Thread Shanmuhanathan T
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Ubuntu release: Intrepid Ibex (stock version of gdm in Intrepid)

When there is an error generated in /etc/profile, gdm crashes on user login
without any error.
To reproduce, source a non existent file in /etc/profile( add '.
/path/to/nowhere.sh' to the file end) and logout/login.
Expectation is that either it should login and display the error or at least,
gracefully fail displaying the error.
Not sure if the problem is there in Gutsy.

[Bug 267917] Re: Intrepid: PDF-printer not recognized by Okular

2008-10-07 Thread Pino Toscano
I don't know nor don't care about what Ubuntu provides, but what I see
from the screenshot *is* the Qt4 fake printer, the one that Okular
disables for the PDF printing. If it would be a real printer (like I do
have VPDF here), Okular would see it without a single problem (modulo
previous Qt 4.4.0 bugs).

Importance talking: this is purely a wish (and so will be considered if
reported on our bugzilla), as it is a feature to be applied and used,
not something we did provide someday and then disabled.
