Re: [Bug 147560] Re: Kernel detects battery management wrong (MSI PR200 / System76)
SLP seems to be good for windows auto-activation, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_Locked_Preinstallation so it makes sense to choose the correct BIOS if you're using the preloaded OS (which i am not). About the others ... well, we will see. I was using the 1.xx BIOS before (AHCI was on by default and wifi button was two-state), i'm using 3.xx now and important functionality does not seem to differ. On Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 10:20, Idan Mashaal [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: A few months ago I asked MSI about the diffrence between 1.xx and 3.xx and got this response: Bios V3.XX is for windows XP.Bios V1.xx is for windows Vista. The differences between these two version BIOS are not only AHCI,but also SLP(system lock preinstallation, and others. So I advise you to use the right BIOS version. I really didn't understand what SLP is and what 'others' mean, but I guess that if somone wants to use SATA, then 1.xx is the safer way (but that doesn't belong to this bug). Re: [Bug 261615] Re: The scribus.desktop file does not specify a category.
* Nathan Handler [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2008-10-13 14:08:50 -]: Caroline, I am not completely sure why we diverged from the upstream .desktop file. There was line that I found in the Debian/Ubuntu .desktop file that was not present in the upstream .desktop file. This line, X -Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=Scribus, appears to be used for translations. I have tried asking around to see if it is still needed, but nobody appeared to be completely sure. In the end, it was suggested that I just keep it there. Alex, by upstream, are you referring to the scribus svn, or a Debian svn? Also, what changes did you commit? I commited the attached desktop file into the scribus svn for both 1.3.3.x branch and the trunk (1.3.5) that I am in the process of switching scribus-ng package to. The only difference between those is below. I am a bit perplexed as the result of these changes is not completely satisfactory. Only ScribusNG entry appears in the Graphics category of the Gnome menu. Scribus is still in the Other category. If there are other changes you'd like me to commit into scribus svn, so we don't have to use a debian/scribus.desktop anymore I'd be happy to do it. My latest packages in the upstream repository already use the upstream .desktop file, which simplifies the debian packaging. [Bug 280805] Re: Latest nvidia driver for Interpid (x64) makes my fan spin all the time.
The Dell XPS M1330 model has many reports of motherboard failure due to overheating of the nvidia 8400M GPU. This has been addressed in part by the new A12 BIOS, which runs the system fan more actively, so increasing the lifetime of the GPU. This bug is a different problem: the GPU temperature increases significantly following one of the recent ubuntu/kubuntu updates. The fan kicks in because the A12 BIOS senses the higher GPU temperature. Re: [Bug 223770] Re: hibernate included in shutdown menu, even if it can't work.
Something worth noting is that depending on capacity of the swap and the current memory usage, whether or not there is enough free space on the swap to fit the total memory used can be transient. However, gnome-power-manager only checks (with pm-is-supported --hibernate) for the status of hibernate support only once, if I'm not mistaken. If it fails once, it does not try again. Another thing worth noting is that, supposing the user is using uswsusp, compression is generally used on the swap image, so it would be pretty hard to figure out whether it can actually the used memory can actually fit into the swap or not, under certain circumstances, because the compression ratio is unpredictable. As for the case of tuxonice, I have absolutely no idea about how that works, having never used it before. [Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime
I also enabled laptop-mode and and the bug was there on battery. In laptop-mode config file it says that hdparm uses -B254 when on AC and -B1 when on battery. I changed -B1 to -B128 but the load_cycles still increase rapidly (I tested higher values with hdparm, but even higher values such as -B230 does not solve the problem for me - only -B254 or -B255). Shouldn't laptop-mode make reads and writes less frequently? If laptop- mode avoids accessing the HD for about 3 minutes average the problem would be solved and the parking feature of the HDs would actually be a feature instead of a problem. While -B254 stop the load cycle problem I don't feel comfortable with this as a solution since the temperature jumps from 40-42 (Vista) to 48-49 (ubuntu with -B254) when in normal usage. Notice that if i use -B128 and keep the HD busy (downloads, for instance) the temperature stays in the range 39-40 and the load cycle does not increase - by the same reason it is not using the parking feature for impact protection. Therefore, the perfectly solution would be if laptop-mode could really stop any access to the hard drive for 2 or 3 minutes (average) avoiding the excessive load cycle while at the same time using the park feature of the HD for protection. On the other hand, ubuntu could constantly pool the hard drive to avoid a load cycle and use a value such as 128 for hdparm (at least while a better solution with laptop-mode is found). While there wouldn't be the protection provided by parking, at least it would avoid increasing the HD temperature unnecessarily. This seems to be what Vista does (intentionally or unintentionally), since I see the HD light blink periodically even when It is idle. -- High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/59695 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 176317] Re: lid event not recognized by acpi event rules on HP530
Hi, I've got a Sony Vaio SZ650N/C with the same problem. I am running the AMD64 version of Hardy. I've done an acpi_listen and closed and reopend the lid - there are absolutely no events listed there, nor in the acpid.log. I've chatted with the HAL folks, thinking that the problem might be there, but also doing an 'lshal -m' and closing/opening the lid yields nothing there as well. I've done an evtest /dev/events/input6 (which reports itself as a 'Lid Button), and still see no events there when I colse/repoen, so I think it's somewhere else in the system. Also, just for completeness. I put some log lines at the lidbtn script so that I could see if it was ever being called, and it's not. [Bug 278764] Re: [intrepid] No output in ipython because because of wrong default backend
For some reason I thought I was subscribed to this bug but I wasn't. So as the guy who reverted the backend from GTKAgg to the upstream default (Agg) I have to admit that I didn't fully understand that Agg wasn't a GUI backend. I've always used GTKAgg, so my bad there. What I was trying to get around was having so many Gnome/GTK dependencies by default for the KDE/Qt users. So the immediate thing we can do is make TkAgg the default backend (I thought it was actually in Debian).
