[Bug 260001] Re: ubiquity crashed with InstallStepError in configure_bootloader()
I resolved the issue, as well, but I'm not sure how. Originally, my system configuration was a triple boot environment (Vista, XP, Ubuntu 7.10), but my XP partition went corrupted, so I bought a new hard drive to install XP and Ubuntu 8.10 on. In anticipation of how my hard drive was going to be laid out, I created two NTFS partitions on my new hard drive (80 GB apiece) and installed Windows XP on the first partition because Intrepid hadn't been released yet. I tried to install Hardy on the second NTFS partition (formatting it to ext3) but Hardy failed during the installation process, saying that there had been an error in setting up grub. When Intrepid was released, it produced the same error during install. Having had some experience setting up grub during a previous grub failure, I tried setting up grub manually; however, grub consistently was unable to find /boot/grub/stage1 (producing errors 15 and 17). Even with a grub boot disk, grub refused to set up a bootloader. I noticed an error documented in some forums regarding 128-byte/256-byte inode compatibility with grub. I formatted the partition using 128-byte inodes and retried installing Ubuntu without reformatting the partition. Ubuntu failed again due to the same grub error. The last thing I tried was letting Ubiquity re-partition the partition that I had originally intended to install on (splitting the partition in the process, creating 77 and 3 Gb partitions). When it finished setup, it installed grub on the disk without any problem. I don't know what might have caused this, but I hope it's helpful. -- ubiquity crashed with InstallStepError in configure_bootloader() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/260001 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 282203] Re: Wacom tablet hotplug is no longer enabled by default
fdi file is a hal policy file that tells hal to tell Xorg about your tablet you just plugged in. its located at /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/10-wacom.fdi You had the X configured in Hardy and you did a dist-upgrade? That means you have done this before and you had a working X configuration from there. It should be usable with minimal change. Without knowing what went wrong its hard to help you. You said you can restore your backup X conf from command line. From command line you can also see the X log to know what is wrong. to see run: tail -f /var/log/Xorg.0.log And see the lines at the end of the output marked (EE). They should point you in the right direction. Its easy to hose your X with changing a conf file simply because it is a conf file and because of that, a single tiny mistake can make X unable to function with it. It has always been the same, hotplug or no hotplug. To make it clear, the hotplug capacity ONLY kicks in if you plug in your tablet AFTER you have started X. It does nothing for tabletPC-s and you wont be bothered by it if your tablet is connected at all times. So you can have the fdi file that the this bug is about without any inconvenience. Theres only one place where having both X conf and the hotplug fdi file is troublesome, and thats the wacom drivers workaround for hotplug. I you had the tablet at startup, unpluged and repluged it then now changing virtual terminals wont restore the full functionality for you because hotplug grabs the device, you need to restart x with your tablet already connected to avoid that. -- Wacom tablet hotplug is no longer enabled by default https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/282203 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

On #ubuntu-bugs, Chris Coulson suggested it could be related to it trying to use update-motd in the postinst script without update-motd being a pre-depends so if it's configured after landscape, the landscape postinst script could do unexpected things. ** Changed in: landscape-client (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => New -- package landscape-common 1.0.23-0ubuntu0.8.10.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script killed by signal (Interrupt) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/291282 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 217849] Re: Hardy 64-bit beta and nightly alternate installation stalls
I've experienced a problem which may be related to this but it is on a Sager NP2090, not NP2092. I've been able to run Hardy for months without the problem manifesting itself but for the past month or so I've experienced quasi-freezes on Hardy and the same on Intrepid. At this point, I'm pretty convinced that I did not do anything wrong and that there is a real bug somewhere. All of my Ubuntu partitions are encrypted. If I let the kernel boot normally and issue: $ dd if=/dev/zero of=~/tmp/garbage bs=500M count=10 Pretty soon the system becomes unusable. The GUI freezes (applets no longer update their information) except for the mouse pointer which moves but with a huge lag. Keyboard response is also severely lagged as evidenced by the fact that it takes several seconds for a "CapsLock" toggle to register. Eventually the system gets out of that quasi-freeze but it takes a while. At the time the test is run, the following appears in the syslog: Nov 1 11:06:26 bodhi kernel: [ 608.405383] CE: hpet increasing min_delta_ns to 15000 nsec Nov 1 11:10:26 bodhi kernel: [ 848.045122] CE: hpet increasing min_delta_ns to 22500 nsec Nov 1 11:20:43 bodhi kernel: [ 1465.497279] CE: hpet increasing min_delta_ns to 33750 nsec Nov 1 11:36:14 bodhi kernel: [ 2396.253626] CE: hpet increasing min_delta_ns to 50624 nsec Nov 1 11:37:05 bodhi kernel: [ 2447.124177] CE: hpet increasing min_delta_ns to 75936 nsec Nov 1 12:31:06 bodhi kernel: [ 5688.448082] CE: hpet increasing min_delta_ns to 113904 nsec Nov 1 13:21:01 bodhi kernel: [ 8682.672764] CE: hpet increasing min_delta_ns to 170856 nsec In cases where the problem occurred by itself even after more than 5 minutes the system could still be hung. If I boot with clocksource=jiffies then the same command above the system is still responsive. The GUI does not freeze: the applets I use to report CPU usage and temperature continue to update as normal. The system is a bit laggy but still usable. Also, the "hpet increasing" messages are absent from the syslog. $ uname -a Linux bodhi 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Thu Oct 30 04:12:22 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux I'm suspecting the problems may be related because the NP2090's hardware is very similar to that of the NP2092 and the solution in either case is to set clocksource=jiffies Quentin, have you ever run into the "hpet increasing" message? Can you try the "dd" command above and see what happens without and with the clocksource=jiffies parameter? -- Hardy 64-bit beta and nightly alternate installation stalls https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/217849 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I found the problem. I modified the session options to allow the root user to start a session. I started a session as root, then opened firefox, changed the settings and closed it. In that moment for a strange reason it saves the settings to HOME/yo ( yo is my default non-root user ) instead of in /root See this other screenshot, the HOME/yo/.mozilla/firefox/vkuuxfit.default/prefs.js attributes are reset to root-only... so when "yo" changes the settings they cannot be saved. ** Attachment added: "root.png" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/19163261/root.png -- Ubuntu 8.10 : Firefox does not save user settings well https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/291933 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Also tried moving the adapter around on a USB extension, changes about 1% give or take, but nothing notable. Just as a note I couldn't even get onto the internet before deactivating WEP on my router.
