[Bug 260001] Re: ubiquity crashed with InstallStepError in configure_bootloader()

2008-10-31 Thread D Koranek
I resolved the issue, as well, but I'm not sure how.

Originally, my system configuration was a triple boot environment
(Vista, XP, Ubuntu 7.10), but my XP partition went corrupted, so I
bought a new hard drive to install XP and Ubuntu 8.10 on.

In anticipation of how my hard drive was going to be laid out, I created
two NTFS partitions on my new hard drive (80 GB apiece) and installed
Windows XP on the first partition because Intrepid hadn't been released
yet.

I tried to install Hardy on the second NTFS partition (formatting it to
ext3) but Hardy failed during the installation process, saying that
there had been an error in setting up grub. When Intrepid was released,
it produced the same error during install.

Having had some experience setting up grub during a previous grub
failure, I tried setting up grub manually; however, grub consistently
was unable to find /boot/grub/stage1 (producing errors 15 and 17). Even
with a grub boot disk, grub refused to set up a bootloader.

I noticed an error documented in some forums regarding 128-byte/256-byte
inode compatibility with grub. I formatted the partition using 128-byte
inodes and retried installing Ubuntu without reformatting the partition.
Ubuntu failed again due to the same grub error.

The last thing I tried was letting Ubiquity re-partition the partition
that I had originally intended to install on (splitting the partition in
the process, creating 77 and 3 Gb partitions). When it finished setup,
it installed grub on the disk without any problem.

I don't know what might have caused this, but I hope it's helpful.

[Bug 279384] Re: NetworkManager does not provide a way for static IP configuration with DHCP-provided DNS, gateway etc.

2008-10-31 Thread bg
I have 3 network cards.
eth0 LAN
eth1 internet
eth2 LAN
I see mi ip configuration with ifconfig and the interface eth1 haven't the
correct ip addres.
When I tried "/etc/init.d/networking restart" it warned me that it wasn't going
to even try to restart because the interfaces file was mis-configured
The solution for me was to edit interfaces file.
Add the following lines to /etc/network/interfaces.
auto eth1
  iface eth0 inet dhcp
Right now, this is what my /etc/network/interfaces looks like:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
address 127.0.0.1
netmask 255.0.0.0

auto eth1
iface eth1 inet dhcp

iface eth2 inet static
address 192.168.1.3
netmask 255.255.255.0

auto eth2

iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.2
netmask 255.255.255.0

auto eth0

[Bug 282203] Re: Wacom tablet hotplug is no longer enabled by default

2008-10-31 Thread Alexia Death
fdi file is a hal policy file that tells hal to tell Xorg about your
tablet you just plugged in. its located at
/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/10-wacom.fdi

You had the X configured in Hardy and you did a dist-upgrade? That means
you have done this before and you had a working X configuration from
there. It should be usable with minimal change. Without knowing what
went wrong its hard to help you. You said you can restore your backup X
conf from command line. From command line you can also see the X log to
know what is wrong. to see run:

tail -f /var/log/Xorg.0.log

And see the lines at the end of the output marked (EE). They should
point you in the right direction.

Its easy to hose your X with changing a conf file simply because it is a
conf file and because of that, a single tiny mistake can make X unable
to function with it. It has always been the same, hotplug or no hotplug.

To make it clear, the hotplug capacity ONLY kicks in if you plug in your
tablet AFTER you have started X. It does nothing for tabletPC-s and you
wont be bothered by it if your tablet is connected at all times. So you
can have the fdi file that the this bug is about without any
inconvenience.

Theres only one place where having both X conf and the hotplug fdi file
is troublesome, and thats the wacom drivers workaround for hotplug. I
you had the tablet at startup, unpluged and repluged it then now
changing virtual terminals wont restore the full functionality for you
because hotplug grabs the device, you need to restart x with your tablet
already connected to avoid that.

[Bug 291282] Re: package landscape-common 1.0.23-0ubuntu0.8.10.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script killed by signal (Interrupt)

2008-10-31 Thread Mackenzie Morgan
I don't think this is the PAM timeout issue. That would've shown in the
log. It's not there.

On #ubuntu-bugs, Chris Coulson suggested it could be related to it
trying to use update-motd in the postinst script without update-motd
being a pre-depends so if it's configured after landscape, the landscape
postinst script could do unexpected things.

[Bug 217849] Re: Hardy 64-bit beta and nightly alternate installation stalls

2008-10-31 Thread Louis-Dominique Dubeau
I've experienced a problem which may be related to this but it is on a
Sager NP2090, not NP2092. I've been able to run Hardy for months
without the problem manifesting itself but for the past month or so I've
experienced quasi-freezes on Hardy and the same on Intrepid. At this
point, I'm pretty convinced that I did not do anything wrong and that
there is a real bug somewhere.

All of my Ubuntu partitions are encrypted. If I let the kernel boot
normally and issue:

$ dd if=/dev/zero of=~/tmp/garbage bs=500M count=10

Pretty soon the system becomes unusable. The GUI freezes (applets no
longer update their information) except for the mouse pointer which
moves but with a huge lag. Keyboard response is also severely lagged as
evidenced by the fact that it takes several seconds for a "CapsLock"
toggle to register. Eventually the system gets out of that quasi-freeze
but it takes a while. At the time the test is run, the following
appears in the syslog:

Nov 1 11:06:26 bodhi kernel: [ 608.405383] CE: hpet increasing min_delta_ns
to 15000 nsec
Nov 1 11:10:26 bodhi kernel: [ 848.045122] CE: hpet increasing min_delta_ns
to 22500 nsec
Nov 1 11:20:43 bodhi kernel: [ 1465.497279] CE: hpet increasing min_delta_ns
to 33750 nsec
Nov 1 11:36:14 bodhi kernel: [ 2396.253626] CE: hpet increasing min_delta_ns
to 50624 nsec
Nov 1 11:37:05 bodhi kernel: [ 2447.124177] CE: hpet increasing min_delta_ns
to 75936 nsec
Nov 1 12:31:06 bodhi kernel: [ 5688.448082] CE: hpet increasing min_delta_ns
to 113904 nsec
Nov 1 13:21:01 bodhi kernel: [ 8682.672764] CE: hpet increasing min_delta_ns
to 170856 nsec

In cases where the problem occurred by itself even after more than 5
minutes the system could still be hung.

If I boot with clocksource=jiffies then the same command above the
system is still responsive. The GUI does not freeze: the applets I use
to report CPU usage and temperature continue to update as normal. The
system is a bit laggy but still usable. Also, the "hpet increasing"
messages are absent from the syslog.

$ uname -a
Linux bodhi 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP Thu Oct 30 04:12:22 UTC 2008 x86_64
GNU/Linux

I'm suspecting the problems may be related because the NP2090's hardware
is very similar to that of the NP2092 and the solution in either case is
to set clocksource=jiffies

Quentin, have you ever run into the "hpet increasing" message? Can you
try the "dd" command above and see what happens without and with the
clocksource=jiffies parameter?

[Bug 191871] Re: Live CD won't install on Acer Aspire 3050-1922

2008-10-31 Thread crhossen
I've been stuck using 7.10 on my Acer Aspire 5050-4570 because of the
same problem. 8.04 didn't work without acpi being off and that seemed to
make networking fail too. I was hoping that this problem would be
resolved when 8.10 came out. But it appears it didn't. Does any one know
if this bug is also present in other distros? I am seriously considering
switching to arch if this issue cannot be fixed.

I have not run into this problem. I chown frequently using both:

  chown john.tapsell filenames
and
  chown john.tapsell:john.tapsell filenames

And have not yet had a problem.

[Bug 291933] Re: Ubuntu 8.10 : Firefox does not save user settings well

2008-10-31 Thread Santiago Orgaz
I found the problem. I modified the session options to allow the root user to
start a session.
I started a session as root, then opened firefox, changed the settings and
closed it. In that moment for a strange reason it saves the settings to HOME/yo
( yo is my default non-root user ) instead of in /root
See this other screenshot, the
HOME/yo/.mozilla/firefox/vkuuxfit.default/prefs.js attributes are reset to
root-only... so when "yo" changes the settings they cannot be saved.

[Bug 291373] Re: vim: hang after ^Z / fg

2008-10-31 Thread dominiko
I can't reproduce this bug. Could it be caused by some settings in your
~/.vimrc or some plugin that you installed?

Can you try first to run vim with: "vim -u NONE" to avoid loading
~/.vimrc and plugins. If it then works, you can try commenting things
in your ~/.vimrc or move out your ~/.vim directory until you find what
setting or plugin is triggering the bug.

Adding
options ipw2200 led=1
to
/etc/modprobe.d/options

fix the problem and show LED in full bright when connected to WLAN,
intermittent on connecting to WLAN and off when manually turned off (by
pressing on the button).

The code should be included by default, it's not a long fix and should
solve a little problem for many of us with that WLAN.

When I try to type i.e., the i is automatically uppercased, making it
  I.e.

This is a frequently used abbreviation, and will be quite annoying.

I was able to stop this by removing the "i" -> "I" replacement rule.
Adding it as an exception (either "i." or "i.e." did nothing).

I would have thought autocorrections should only happen after a space is
typed, so parts of abbreviations aren't autocorrected, but that's an

Sorry for the second post here but this carried over to Intrepid Ibex.
Same problem on both versions in my case.

[Bug 225851] Re: RTL8187 wireless driver disconnects ( Wg111v2 in Hardy )

2008-10-31 Thread Andrew Hamilton
Confirming zenzike's additions. I'm picking up my neighbors wireless at
13% and my own router at 13% which is about 6 feet away (on 1st floor.)
Also tried moving the adapter around on a USB extension, changes about
1% give or take, but nothing notable.

Just as a note I couldn't even get onto the internet before deactivating
WEP on my router. Found a post that said there were complications on
older builds so I tried it, I could connect before and after the changes
but when attempting to connect to a webpage in Firefox it would just
timeout before deactiviating my security. Don't know if that's of any
use but meh.

Now works for a few minutes at slow speeds then drops.

[Bug 290953] Re: firefox crashes sporadically after Intrepid upgrade

2008-10-31 Thread geedew
I have noticed this too...

I'm on a Lenovo x61t. It seems to be related to flash, because on
pages that have flash ads, they will lock up, but then if he ads are not
flash, it doesn't lock up... even thought Flash 10 was working just fine
in Hardy.

[Bug 267546] Re: Cursor is ridiculously slow, ALPS touchpad, Intrepid Alpha 5

2008-10-31 Thread James_pic
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 262276 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/262276

As in bug #262276, you can fix this by adding some lines to
11-x11-synaptics.fdi. Adding
0.4
0.65
in the "AlpsPS/2 ALPS" section seems to do the trick, and feels like a good
speed.

It seems odd that the bcm5974 section has quite explicit definitions for
all of these properties, whereas the appletouch and ALPS sections have
none; both the appletouch and ALPS touchpads seem to need some tweaking,
judging by their bug reports.

[Bug 271706] Re: Volume control wheel on laptop is sticking in ubuntu

2008-10-31 Thread Rodrigo de Lima Vieira
This happens on my machine too, a toshiba u300 series (u305-s5127).
I use the combination, CtrL+ALT+F1 then CtrL + ALT + F7 to workaround.
In hardy my volume wheel works fine. And only in hardy and in dapper. In Fedora
8 and 9, Mandriva 2008.1, 2009.0, opensuse 10.3 and 11.0 my volume whell
doesn't work, in all the other distros i'd the same bug! (sorry about my
english, is terrible!).
Can I help sending more information ou doing tests ?

[Bug 278261] Re: two xscreens -> gnome panel crashes

2008-10-31 Thread chewearn
I am seeing the same problem.
kernel: 2.6.27-7-generic x86_64
Ubuntu: Intrepid(8.10)
Gnome: 2.24.1
nvidia-drivers: 177
gnome-panel: 1:2.24.1-0ubuntu2

Two monitors, separate X screens.

If I click on a panel application launcher on screen 2, gnome-panel stop
responding and consumed 100% CPU. An empty dialogbox appeared in screen
1 with title "Error".

"killall gnome-panel" brought things back. /var/crash directory is
empty.

It looks like the application launchers in screen 2 "thought" they are
in screen 1 (if you right-click on the application launcher icon in
screen 2 and select properties, the Properties dialog appeared in screen
1).
