[Bug 293410] Re: kernel panic with 2.6.27(AMD64)

2008-11-07 Thread Andrew
Hi Leann,

Thanks for you response, even I don't think there isn't any difference,
but, here is the screen photo. Remember, I already remove the "splash
quiet" options from grub, and, I already tried the latest kernel of
ubuntu.

Anything else you want please let me know.

And, I can't use my ubuntu desktop now, so, please consider mark this
issue "Critical".

[Bug 239595] Re: Gutsy turns off LAN port on Intel D945GCLF (ATOM)

2008-11-07 Thread IanW
Florian,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better.
Unfortunately we can't fix it without a bit more information.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already
done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the
Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response.
It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version
you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a fresh boot and attach the
resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the
resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-
related bug reports is available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies Thanks in advance!

Public bug reported:

System: Intrepid Ibex (clean install) on Dell Inspiron 1520.
If the wifi card is connected to a Wireless Network and I try to Shutdown the
laptop then some troubles happen.
The "Shutdown splash" hangs while it is at half-completion, then I a got a
white screen for about 20 seconds, and eventually the laptop is turned off.
During the momentary freeze the Wifi LED blinks.
I get a normal shutdown just disabling wlan0 interface before it.

[Bug 295448] [NEW] Setting APT::Default-Release blocks security fix and updates

2008-11-07 Thread Yan Li
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt

This is related to all versions before Hardy (include). I haven't tested
this on Intrepid so I'm not sure about those versions after Hardy.

According to apt_preferences manpage, the target release can be set on
the apt-get command line or in the APT configuration file
/etc/apt/apt.conf, and "APT::Default-Release "stable";" is given out as
an example. This is a very common and popular practice used in Debian
community to set the default release and using apt-pin, but doing this
in Ubuntu leads to serious security impact with no obvious warning.

After setting APT::Default-Release to "hardy", which is the "Suite" name
for main hardy source, no security fixes nor updates would be installed
unless their priorities are also set explicitly in apt_preferences. This
is because that in Ubuntu's world, security fixes are from "hardy-
security" source and other updates are from "hardy-updates" source,
which bear different "Suite" from the main source. Setting APT::Default-
Release rises the priority of packages from main source to 990, but
doesn't cover packages from hardy-security and hardy-updates, so the
latter are ignored since their packages now has lower priority (priority
500 only) than those old ones in main source (990).

I set APT::Default-Release to "hardy" on Sep this year until I found
this problem today. Removed that setting and I'm surprised to found that
I can install 46 security fixes and updates accumulated. Which is pretty
sad to me that got known I haven't got security fixes for more than 2
months.

This is a radical deviation from the Debian practice. In Debian all
security fixes and updates bear the same "Suite" (etch or lenny) so
setting APT::Default-Release to "etch" covers all security fixes and
updates.

I think it's unlikely that Ubuntu changes the organization of it's
source, so at least a fix to this problem is patching the
apt_preferences manpage, alerting people not to use APT::Default-Release
like they have used this in Debian and the reason and the following
impacts.

Version information of my apt from Hardy:
Architecture: i386
Version: 0.7.9ubuntu17.1

Thanks!

[Bug 238683] Re: Ugly step in shadow

2008-11-07 Thread Chris Antonio
I can confirm this bug. Increasing the shadow radius makes the step more
obvious.

Also, when the shadow radius is sufficiently large, the top and bottom
shadows disappear. The shadow radius where this occurs depends on the
size of the window. Try it with max radius, and you'll see it occur for
every window.

I've also noticed that the step disappears when zooming in on the step
using the Enhanced Zoom in Compiz, only to reappear when zooming back to
normal.

To make this step less obvious, I've set the radius to 6.0, so even if
the step exists at this radius, I wouldn't be able to perceive it.

[Bug 259157] Re: [MASTER 0.7 regression] atheros/madwifi and orinoco drivers not supported

2008-11-07 Thread J.P.
I also recommend Wicd as a workaround solution to this issue as it
solved what I thought I had 'fixed' the problem in #291848. With
"Automatically reconnect" checked in the preferences, I watched as the
connection would drop and Wicd would immediately reconnect without any
hiccups to network activity. With Network Manager, I would have just
gotten the spinning animation and a dialog box to enter the WAP
passphrase. Keep in mind that instead of using madwifi you simply use
wext.

A restart isn't necessary; just log out and log back in for the
notification applet to appear.

[Bug 207473] Re: Screen brightness double level changes

2008-11-07 Thread Amir Khosroshahi
The original problem observed in gnome-power-manager (that is multiple
levels change of back-light using Fn keys when g-p-m is running) is not
yet resolved. It started for me after upgrading to 8.04 and is still
there after upgrading to 8.10. My system is a Dell Inspiron 6400.

The odd thing I want to report is that after upgrading to 8.10, using Fn
keys to adjust brightness changes the brightness randomly. At least in
8.04 it always changed in double levels. But now in Intrepid, using Fn
keys, the brightness level changes by 1, 2 or 3 levels with no pattern
and changes in a random fashion.

Another odd observation, IMHO, is that such a nasty bug that affects so
many of us linger for so long. Where doth the problem lie?!

[Bug 295444] Re: "dpkg-reconfigure libpam-runtime" does not respect debconf frontend

2008-11-07 Thread Steve Langasek
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help to improve
Ubuntu.

The -f argument to dpkg-reconfigure is ineffectual for libpam-runtime
because -f only sets the debconf frontend used when calling the .config
script for a package, and libpam-runtime doesn't use a .config script:
it calls (and must call) pam-auth-update from the postinst.

To set the frontend used by pam-auth-update, you can run either of these
commands:

DEBIAN_FRONTEND=editor dpkg-reconfigure libpam-runtime
DEBIAN_FRONTEND=editor pam-auth-update

Marking this report as invalid because the pam scripts are functioning
as designed; if you believe dpkg-reconfigure's behavior is incorrect and
that -f should be applied when invoking any of the maintainer scripts,
this bug report should be reassigned to debconf.

[Bug 287444] Re: audio problem after resume from standby

regarding: "In your case, make sure nothing is accessing the sound card"
this even happens when all programs are closed.

regarding: "In the first place, how come you don't have pulseaudio running? Did

No, I didn't remove it (fresh 8.10 install from DVD), but I found out why it
wasn't running (as I restarted my system):
sudo alsa force-reload
also kills the pulseaudio process on my computer.
But however,

[Bug 276311] Re: magnifier plugin in compiz make X crash

2008-11-07 Thread Chris Hood
I also have just experienced this problem, enabled magnifier from
compizconfig-settings-manager in intrepid and crashed the x server.

When I rebooted the computer it would get to the login screen and when I
tried to login would then crash and go back to login screen.

I managed to back into my user account by first remove all the compiz
stuff through the terminal:

sudo apt-get remove compiz-core compiz-fusion-plugins-extra compiz-
fusion-plugins-main compiz-gnome compizconfig-settings-manager
libcompizconfig0 libdecoration0 compizconfig-settings-manager python-
compizconfig emerald

I was then able to log into the user account and re-install all the
compiz stuff. Before enabling any effect though I first made sure that
magnifier was disabled form the compizconfig-settings-manager.

I am also using an Intel 945GM chipset - if that is significant

[Bug 295445] [NEW] no input password dialogue displayed

2008-11-07 Thread Tejas
Public bug reported:

I have a lenovo R61 laptop with a intel centrino processor.
Iam running ubuntu 8.04.1

"uname -a" returns the following line in terminal:

Linux Tejas 2.6.24-21-generic #1 SMP Tue Oct 21 23:43:45 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux

Problems I've been facing are:

1.My system has become quite slow.It takes about a minute to open
terminal!.All other applications are also taking longer than usual to
open.

2.Whenever I try to open any application which requests the password(eg.
i try to open the synaptic package manager),It gives a "Starting
Administrative Application" window in the lower panel (but no window is
shown on the screen).after that nothing happens. That includes most of
the things from the "SYSTEM-->ADMINISTRATION" menu. All of them show a
"Starting Administrative Application" window in the lower panel. After
which nothing happens.

3.Also at the same time, I became unable to install or uninstall
anything. I can start the add/remove applications window, tell it to
reload the list of available applications, and it just sits there
spinning its wheels forever.

4.When press ctrl+alt+backsp and re login it takes about 3 min to load
the panels. But the desktop icons are displayed normally and i can open
them.

[Bug 270461] Re: Alpha-5 alternate installer fails

2008-11-07 Thread erisa
There might be a commonality.. I ran into this bug 4 times in a row,
but once I switched my CD-ROM drive for an old no-name spare I had lying
around, the install went smoothly. The original drive when I ran into
the bug was an NEC ND-3550A -- same as Stormelf's, similar to Keyser's,
and the same brand as Alastair's. It's also worth noting that the CD-
ROM is the only IDE device in my computer; the internal hard drives are
both SATA. And I used the Alternate CD so that I could enable disk
encryption.

[Bug 227214] Re: many apps randomly lose focus

2008-11-07 Thread Adam Smith
Well, I updated to Intrepid and the bug is gone. I don't know what
happened. Just a guess: my boot partition is relatively small, and
lots of old versions of the kernel had built up there. This gave me
space to do the Intrepid installation all at one go, rather than the
piecemeal way I did Hardy. So maybe some parameter somewhere was better
set.

But really, I don't know. I'm just thankful that this bug's not
plaguing me anymore. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

[Bug 295369] Re: sound is delayed a whole second in intrepid

2008-11-07 Thread Psy[H[]
I had a terrible delay in every game from Maelstrom to Urban terror.
Sound was playing 0.1-0.2 seconds later than it should. That's already
too large delay, very annoying. Maybe your whole second delay is some
complex problem, or your cpu is slower.

Anyway I've just disabled and removed Pulseaudio from the system, and
sound got back where it should be. Try it.

[Bug 271706] Re: Volume control wheel on laptop is sticking in ubuntu

2008-11-07 Thread drewp
Same thing on intrepid on an hp pavilion dv9000, 2.6.24-21-generic
32bit.

On this machine, the volume is adjusted by sliding your finger on a
little stripe. It's like a laptop mousepad, but 1D and above the
keyboard (http://www.laptopblog.org/images/jgfjh.jpg). What I find is
the gently sliding and releasing still works fine, but if I press harder
with my finger, I'll get a repeated volume adjustment until the volume
hits 0 or 100%. The workaround is to be very gentle with this
controller.

[Bug 295442] [NEW] Nautilus/file browser freezing at home, user and root folders

2008-11-07 Thread Ron fronm MD
Public bug reported:

Machine is Asus A8N-SLI Premium motherboard AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200 CPU, 2
GB RAM, video card is Nvidia chipset (I forget what card it is) 4 SATA
II drives, all WD. No wifi or wireless stuff used, wired FiOS internet.
No other cards in machine. Note drives are not currently used as RAID
array just an OS drive and three data drives.

Occurs with 8.04 and 8.1 versions. Problem only occurs on 160 GB OS
drive, does not occur on data drives. Nautilus (opened in terminal or
with alt-F2) and file browser from the toolbar (Places) both freeze if I
try to access the root, ron (my username) or home folders. If any of
those folders are opened the browser greys out then must be force quit.
System monitor shows one of the cores goes to 100% usage and the process
related to that is Xorg. In terminal nautilus --check shows no errors.
Under Hardy 8.04 the freeze could be force quit but as soon as it quit
the browser would pop back up and refreeze, restarting machine stopped
the cycle but you had to force quit before the machine would restart
(note under Hardy the cores would switch the 100% usage level when the
browser popped back up after force quit). Upgraded to 8.1 and the
freezes still occur but force quit makes it stay quit. Fresh installs
still have the problem.

New to linux from XP so I have no idea how to even start better
debugging reporting. If you have someone that can walk me through
tracing the problem on irc feel free to email me and we can setup a
time. I do not know if this is a potential security issue.

[Bug 295443] [NEW] After resume from suspend, SD cards are mounted multiple times

2008-11-07 Thread Mackenzie Morgan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

Hardware: SD Host controller: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C822 SD/SDIO/MMC/MS/MSPro Host
Adapter
Ubuntu: Hardy
Arch: amd64

Steps to reproduce:
1. Insert SD card into SD slot
2. Suspend
3. Resume

Expected result:
SD card is mounted once, in the same mount point as before

Actual results:
- Often, it is mounted twice (if I suspend and resume again while this is true,
it can go up to 3 times...have not seen more than that). One of the mounted
cards visible on the desktop will show mount information. The others will have
no information in Nautilus. The mount command verifies that it is mounted
multiple times though.
- Sometimes, it will switch from /media/disk-1 to /media/disk-2 across suspends.

[Bug 295441] [NEW] pam-auth-update does not correctly process a valid profile file

2008-11-07 Thread Daniel Richard G.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libpam-runtime

Working with libpam-runtime 1.0.1-4ubuntu5 in intrepid.

I've put together a profile for pam-auth-update to use. For some reason,
it doesn't like the session-related fields I have, despite them
appearing to be well-formed. Attached is a (somewhat) minimal example
that triggers the bug.

When I run pam-auth-update to enable the new profile, I get this mess
(after returning from the debconf dialog):

# pam-auth-update
Use of uninitialized value $3 in split at /usr/sbin/pam-auth-update line 237,
 line 23.
Use of uninitialized value $modline in substitution (s///) at
/usr/sbin/pam-auth-update line 239, line 23.

line 243, line 23.

line 244, line 23.

Unfortunately, /etc/pam.d/common-session turns out incorrectly
generated. Here is the last part of the file, after the above operation:

# and here are more per-package modules (the "Additional" block)
session requiredpam_unix.so
session optionalpam_krb5.so minimum_uid=2
session

session
# end of pam-auth-update config

Then, when I go to disable the profile, the below comes up just before
the debconf dialog:

# pam-auth-update
Use of uninitialized value $3 in split at /usr/sbin/pam-auth-update line 607,
 line 26.
Use of uninitialized value $curmod in quotemeta at /usr/sbin/pam-auth-update

Both bugs are actually the same. The bug lies in ALSA. However, in the
case of systems with pulseaudio enabled, we can work around this by
making sure pulseaudio (and hence everything else) lets go of the sound
card just before suspending, and then grabs it again after resuming.

In your case, make sure nothing is accessing the sound card (most media
players still access the sound card when paused) before you suspend,
then try resuming.

In the first place, how come you don't have pulseaudio running? Did you
remove it?

[Bug 130235] Re: Autohide Not At All -- stays up

2008-11-07 Thread Mahesh Asolkar
Definitely a bug, a very annoying one at that too.

Passing it as a feature is just unfortunate. If it is really a desired
feature, name it, have a check-box in the preferences that can enable
the said feature.

When I set the autohide feature, my intent is to "temporarily" raise the
dock, use it and forget about it. If I am expected to manually hide the
dock, auto-hide is broken.

[Bug 272247] Re: System freezes during boot, unless I hold a key down

2008-11-07 Thread Radosław Nadstawny
I have the same here on HP Pavilion dv6840ew (amd64, nvidia).

I wouldn't recommend using "acpi=noirq" - it "solved" the issue, but I
haven't been able to start X using proprietary Nvidia driver. Then I
tried using nv instead and started X, but strange things happened - e.g.
when I connected to wireless network (using proprietary broadcom
driver), the mouse cursor stopped responding, then keyboard, and soon I
was left with only one option - hard reset. I've tried it again then and
got the same results.

I've also tried other mentioned options - "nolapic", "nosmp" and
"hpet=disable" - at this point I can say that each worked and I haven't
noticed any side effects, but I really can't say for sure that there
aren't any. For now I'll stick to "hpet=disable" and if I notice some
strange behavior I'll post about it here.

I found the Message on the Linux Kernel 2.6.27.5 ChangeLog

The current snd-hda-intel driver seems blocking the power-off on some
devices like eeepc. Although this is likely a BIOS problem, we can add
a workaround by disabling IRQ lines before power-off operation.
This patch adds the reboot notifier to achieve it.

It is good new ,though I can't confirm that my notebook cause by the

[Bug 294925] Re: nvidia 3D/compiz performance is greatly reduced in Intrepid

2008-11-07 Thread Rocko
Using Call of Duty 4 running under wine 1.1.7 as a benchmark, both
173.14.12 and 177.80 are much slower than Hardy with 173.14.12.

Intrepid only manages 10-13 fps (at the start of the 'War Pig' level)
with either driver, while Hardy gets around 28-30 fps, ie over double
the rate. This is running in 1680x1050 resolution on a second monitor
(COD4 settings are identical in both Intrepid and Hardy).

So 3D in Intrepid is much slower than Hardy with *both* nvidia drivers
for this game.

I just re-did the results for OpenArena with Intrepid's 173.14.12 driver
and got vastly slower results than last time:

840 frames 3.1 seconds 272.6 fps 1.0/3.7/23.0/1.8 ms
840 frames 3.0 seconds 282.1 fps 1.0/3.5/41.0/1.9 ms
840 frames 3.0 seconds 280.7 fps 1.0/3.6/14.0/1.4 ms
840 frames 3.0 seconds 281.6 fps 1.0/3.6/13.0/1.4 ms

nvidia-settings confirms that the 173.14.12 driver is running. Is it
possible that the problem is in the non-kernel driver and part of 177.80
has been left in userspace? I'm using envyng to change drivers and at
one point after rebooting it had reverted to the 177.80 kernel driver
without my asking it.

Also, I tried both OpenArena and COD4 with compiz disabled and the same
results. So perhaps Intrepid's poor 3D performance should be listed against
something like xorg-server 1.5? What's the best way to debug something like
this?

[Bug 295436] [NEW] atheme-services fails to reload on system reboot

2008-11-07 Thread Robert Pendell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: atheme-services

Whenever the system reboots atheme-services fails to reload and refuses
to do so properly until an apt-get purge and install are done. This
install will last until the next reboot. Unfortunately I am unable to
produce anything that will point to it but anything that you need can be
easily produced. This issue is consistently reproducible.

The symptom of the service not starting is that it will show that it has
"loaded" however it does not show up in the process list. Also services
supplied by it are not available.

Note I have tried a few things here.

Used the base module list (only required setting changes like uplink)
While it was working tried to stop and restart the service manually (which
worked fine)
A reliable strace cannot be made. Both the working and non-working setups
ended with a session detachment since it goes into the background.
A reliable backtrace cannot be made. The non-working install ended with the
message that it terminated normally. No stack or registers available. The
failure happens after the detach.

So for some reason it doesn't like the reboot. I am really scratching
my head on this myself.

[Bug 295435] [NEW] [Intrepid] pulseaudio periodically gets into a state where it does not play any sound and must be kill -9'ed and restarted

2008-11-07 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Ever since upgrading to Intrepid from Hardy, the pulseaudio daemon
periodically gets into a state where it does not play any sound. Some
apps will actually freeze if I attempt to play sound in them (e.g.,
Rhythmbox) while others work normally but with no sound (e.g., Flash in
Firefox using aoss and the pulse plugin via the .asoundrc). Trying to
kill pulseaudio with -15 has no effect; instead you must use -9. After
restarting it, newly opened applications will play sound just fine,
until the problem occurs again. It happens about once per day for me,
and so far it always seems to be when I'm not home, so perhaps the
problem only occurs when sound is not in use? Or maybe there is some
sort of gradual leak? I usually have Hulu, SMPlayer, and Rhythmbox open
24/7.

After it happened today I checked the syslog for things relating to
pulseaudio and found only the following:

Nov 7 17:16:54 tinygod3 pulseaudio[30771]: protocol-native.c: Failed to push
data into queue
Nov 7 17:16:55 tinygod3 last message repeated 15093 times

[Bug 292743] Re: Sound not working when NVIDIA graphics card installed

2008-11-07 Thread fifthconspiracy
Goran

OMFG!!! It works! I have sound! Beautiful sound... I'm blasting some
ACDC right now just for good measure ;-) Man, my neighbours are gonna be
pissed.

Thank you so much. Greatly appreciated.

Few pointers for Ubuntu folks... after you make the change to the alsa-
base file:

1. Go to System > Preferences > Sound and set the "sound events",
"music and movies" and "audio conferencing" all to "Auto Detect". I had
no sound until I did this... for me when I first reviewed this pop-up,
it had everything set as "HDA Intel ALC888 (Analog) ALSA".

2. Then clicking on the volume icon in the top panel, I noticed this new
slider called "Front". It was muted, but the master and PCM were not. I
jumped up that baby and boom! Sound.

Thanks Again Goran! Cheers from the West Coast of Canada!

Paul.
