[Bug 295698] [NEW] rhythmbox: crash on clicking "Ban" or "Love" on last.fm radio

2008-11-08 Thread Serge Fukanchik
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Rhythmbox always crash when i select Last.fm plugin, select Neighbour
Radio, select Play, and after that press either "Ban" or "Love" button
on toolbar.

I built libaudioscrobbler.so with debug info, and here is stack trace:

#0 0x7fda4c43c6b0 in strlen () from /lib/libc.so.6
#1 0x7fda3f00ca04 in handle_xmlrpc_response (source=,
body=0x0, entry=0x1def5c0) at rb-lastfm-source.c:2297
#2 0x7fda3f00ac1c in http_response_cb (session=,
req=, user_data=)
at rb-lastfm-source.c:1478
#3 0x7fda54e2c696 in ?? () from /usr/lib/libsoup-2.4.so.1
#4 0x7fda4d9d625d in g_closure_invoke () from /usr/lib/libgobject-2.0.so.0

#6 0x7fda4d9ed608 in g_signal_emit_valist () from
/usr/lib/libgobject-2.0.so.0

Seems in http_response_cb body is set to NULL, but handle_response
doesn't expect NULL here.

I have
Ubuntu AMD 64 release 8.10;
Rhythmbox 0.11.6svn20081008-0ubuntu4.1;
I expect not to crash, but send my vote about currently playing sond, or see
some error probably if server misresponses;
Instead rhytmbox just crashes.

[Bug 295693] [NEW] gui does not support vnpc --enable-1des option

[Bug 295694] [NEW] falls back to GNOME directory icons for XDG user directories in "Places" menu

2008-11-08 Thread Alexander van Loon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tangerine-icon-theme

Instead of displaying it's own directory icons for XDG user directories
in the "Places" menu, Tangerine falls back to using the icons from the
GNOME iconset for those directories. I'm reasonably sure that the bug is
related to the Tangerine iconset, because the Human iconset and the
GNOME iconset display their own icons for these directories. I'm
observing this on a fresh Ubuntu 8.10 with the latest updates.

[Bug 273543] Re: Laptop external screen resolution wrong

2008-11-08 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hmm. I don't think this is actually an xserver bug.

If you look at your xrandr output, you can see that a wide range of
resolutions have been properly detected. "Mirror" means that the system
should use the highest resolution common to both displays, and you can
see in the xrandr output that the only resolution higher than 1024x768
that the LVDS supports is 1280x800. The VGA doesn't support that mode,
so 1024x768 is the highest resolution they can both display.

It's certainly possible to configure a "clipped" display like you
describe with the xrandr command line tool, so both the things you
describe in your previous comment can be done with Xorg. So maybe what
you want to do is file a Wishlist bug against Screen Resolution (package
gnome-control-center) to have such features added to the GUI.

I have tried that and it doesn't help.. :( I don't think that it has
something to do with the chipset because my SATA hard disk is working
ok. The DVD drive is PATA Panasonic (matshita) UJ870. Maybe this drive
is not supported by libata. But it was working fine with ide modules. I
don't think it is a good idea to leave out these modules from ubuntu

On the next startup of my Eclipse workspace everything worked.

[Bug 150193] Re: Remote Login via XDMCP is not working

2008-11-08 Thread bford16
Also, this appears to have happened before. A bug filed for Gentoo
(marked SOLVED) claims that updating GDM to version 2.20.2 fixed the
issue. Intrepid uses version 2.20.8.

[Bug 292047] Re: middle-button scroll disabled on trackpoint in Intrepid

2008-11-08 Thread David Jaša
Copy & paste from dupe:

My Ubuntu Intrepid installation recognizes correctly trackpoint, but
sets option "EmulateWheelButton" to non-existing button 4:

(II) config/hal: Adding input device TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint
(**) TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint: always reports core events
(**) TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint: Device: "/dev/input/event10"
(II) TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint: Found x and y relative axes
(II) TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint: Found 3 mouse buttons
(II) TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint: Configuring as mouse
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint" (type: MOUSE)
(**) TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint: YAxisMapping: buttons 4 and 5
(**) TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint: EmulateWheelButton: 4, EmulateWheelInertia: 10,
EmulateWheelTimeout: 200

It can be easily corrected by this piece of xml in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/:

  true
  2
  4 5
  true

And Xorg.0.log then reports:

(II) config/hal: Adding input device TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint
(**) TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint: always reports core events
(**) TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint: Device: "/dev/input/event10"
(II) TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint: Found x and y relative axes

(II) TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint: Forcing middle mouse button emulation.
(**) Option "EmulateWheel" "true"
(**) Option "EmulateWheelButton" "2"
(**) TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint: YAxisMapping: buttons 4 and 5

[Bug 295691] [NEW] network-manager-openvpn does not allow you to make openvpn drop privileges

2008-11-08 Thread Illuvator
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-openvpn

Unlike manually setting the details in a file such as client.conf, the
network manager openvpn plugin does not allow you to make it drop
privileges from the root user to another. I tend to use an 'openvpn'
user for all my openvpn connections, and manage this through the openvpn
.conf file with:

# Downgrade privileges after initialization (non-Windows only)
user openvpn
group openvpn

It would be good if you could set a user/group for openvpn to run as
once initiated. Could this be incorporated? Do you think it would be
worthwhile?

[Bug 279262] Re: [regression] devices/interfaces not set to "auto" in /etc/network/interfaces get blacklisted in 0.7 (intrepid) but were managed in 0.6 (hardy and before)

2008-11-08 Thread Dave Jakeman
Just back from wiping/installing 8.10 (full) and trying to set up my
static wired connections.

On the first attempt, I configured my connections and they were accepted
without a "read-only" error. Couldn't get onto the internet though.
Went back to check, and both connection definitions had vanished.
Reconfigured them again and this time renamed them from "auto eth0" and
"auto eth1" to "Wired Ethernet 1" and "Wired Ethernet 2". This time,
they were stored and I could surf with Firefox. On reboot though, both
the connections had disappeared again.

[Bug 295169] Re: is not possible to write the content of a message in hotmail. The form is disabled

2008-11-08 Thread ivan17stone
The same as as above.. Windows Live asks me to update my browser to the
latest version and gives a link for their websites. It also shows a link
to continue with Windows Live Hotmail, saying that maybe it won't work
correctly. Then in Windows Live eveyrthing works except the write
message panel.

Seems like Windows Live hotmail can't detect the browser version of
Firefox. Also seems like a java applet is not working correctly.

[Bug 275010] Re: Unable to disable the ssh module of gnome-keyring

2008-11-08 Thread Kenny Millington
As a workaround for myself I've built a version of the gnome-keyring
package that is compiled without ssh support and so it doesn't act as a
SSH agent...

I've attached a debdiff which will do the above, you just need to build
the package, alternatively, i've submitted the package to my PPA and you
can grab it from there (once it's been built by the PPA system).

This may or may not be the way Ubuntu wants to deal with this bug so i'm
posting this purely as a workaround, although one could argue gnome-
keyring-daemon isn't mature enough to be a ssh-agent since it doesn't
handle -c / -t options to ssh-add. (LP: #209447)

Dev-note: The debdiff (patch file) change to Makefile.in might seem odd
but it wouldn't build without that change since it was still depending
on libgkr-ssh.la which wasn't going to be built and I'm not really a
Makefile kinda guy so I just made it always compile libgkr-ssh.la so
it'd at least build (this is quite possibly a separate bug for the gnome
guys)...

[Bug 278485] Re: If Ubuntu is connected to more than one network (e.g. GSM and wireless) but only GSM has internet access, OS is unable to access internet. NM version 0.7.

2008-11-08 Thread Motin
The workaround I currently use when being connected to my 3g connection
and another one at the same time is to replace the default route through
the command line:

sudo route add default gw `ip addr show ppp0 | grep inet | head -n 1 |
awk '{print $2}' | sed -r 's/\/.*//'` ppp0

Then, as long as I have my 3g providers DNS servers specified in
/etc/resolv.conf, I can connect as usual, share my internet connection
through Firestarter etc.

[Bug 295690] [NEW] OpenOffice.org don't show any menu text

2008-11-08 Thread Xwarman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

When I open any part of OOo there is not any menu text. (See Screenshot
--> the Menu bar of OOo)

By the way: If I try to start the Bug Report part of OOo. it collects problem
information etc, start firefox with launchpad side, but from that moment on, my
mouse don't exept any more klicks. I'am working on a Compaq nx9105 notebook.
Moving of the mouse is possible, but not the integrated mousepad, or an
perifiral mouse, accept any klicks, so, that I must kill the Windowseasson by
pressing Ctrl + Alt + Backspace. After relogin I am able to use the mouse as
ever. If I try to do the discribed way again, the same error comes again. What
can I do?
I'am using Kubuntu 8.10 x64 with last updates.

Can you confirm me that this patch you're working on will also work in

Re: [Bug 148454] Re: console-kit-deamon spawns too many threads

2008-11-08 Thread Loye Young
@IronStorm
>everything on the desktop
>depends on it for something

Yet another example of rampant dependency inflation. I've complained
about this before in a variety of contexts. Somehow, the entire open
source developer community needs to get a handle on it. It's a big
problem for IYCC, and I suspect other OEMs, when trying to tailor a
machine for a particular use case or market.

The Debian Policy Manual has a a very good statement on how to
categorize dependencies.
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-relationships.html
Unfortunately, the policy seems not to be enforced nearly enough.

In particular, the entire community should make greater use of
Suggests, Enhances, and Recommends dependencies, of virtual packages
that "Provide" packages, and of meta-packages that are similarly
careful about dependency relationships.

Dependency inflation isn't restricted to Ubuntu. Best I can tell, all
the distros are guilty of it, including RedHat. :-) We're working on
weeding it out of the IYCC Distribution, but it's not a trivial task
because of the pervasiveness of the problem.

I'm not sure how to create a process that would herd the cats, but
it's what's needed. Perhaps each distro should have a Dependency Czar
to review dependencies and crackdown on ever-expanding dependencies.

Happy Trails,

  * Merge from debian unstable (LP: #295646), remaining changes:
- debian/control: Add openbsd-inetd | inet-superserver dependencies

[Bug 181703] Re: Brasero does not recognize audio CD or blank CD-R

2008-11-08 Thread Ondrej Marsalek
same problem here with:

ubuntu 8.10 amd64

i insert an empty dvd-r and brasero reports that it has zero size. any
attempt at burning therefore fails because of insufficient space.
switching the the disk size by hand has no effect other than the
displayed capacity.

i can provide more info if needed, but it seems that this is pretty
common, so it most likely is not useful.

[Bug 221363] Re: Policy Kit Unlock Buttons Greyed Out when using NX

2008-11-08 Thread schnollk
For SSH sessions I'd like to add that the error still persists here.
Nastyly it's happening for me on a laptop with broken display that I use
as a "server" (no graphical login). So I'm -- among others -- not able
to add users or change time.

While reading here I couldn't find a solution that would let me use
users-admin without a display, i.e. graphilcal login?

Just now I noticed this message while fireing up users-admin sudoed:

** (users-admin:26835): CRITICAL **: Unable to lookup session

I have the same issue. It was no problem in Ubuntu 8.04, but now I've

The sound starts out as normal and fine, but at some point it suddenly

I cannot run envy24control. It only says "No ICE1712 cards found"

Did any of you find a solution?

[Bug 260001] Re: ubiquity crashed with InstallStepError in configure_bootloader()

2008-11-08 Thread luvr
In my case, it cannot be a question of "the existing grub multiboot
partition being back-level," because I install GRUB into the root
partition that I'm creating. I even install the GRUB boot loader
("stage1") into the Boot Block of the root partition (NOT in the Master
Boot Block--I use a custom-compiled GRUB as my Master Boot Loader, and
let it chainload to whichever partition that I want to boot.

In my case, the problem is that I'm trying to set up "/home" as a
separate partition--that won't work either.

It seems to me that intrepid will fail unless you install EVERYTHING
into one partition--including "/boot", "/home", and whichever locations
for you might wish to use a separate partition.

Anyway, I have circumvented the problem by initially setting up a
single, self-contained root partition, and afterwards moving "/home"
into its own partition.

[Bug 269071] Re: Intrepid regression: default route is no longer redirected over VPN tunnel

2008-11-08 Thread Xamusk
I think "Ignore automatically obtained routes" is just a wrong description
It should be something like "Use routes from VPN server" or something like
that, since pulling the routes from the server would be an "automatically
obtained route".
Also, this should be defaulted to on, since it's what most users want.

[Bug 295679] [NEW] Realtek AC'97 driver garbles sound 2.6.27-5

2008-11-08 Thread Mads Konradsen
Public bug reported:

My bug is very simmilar to bug #248881, but i had no problems with the
old kernel used in 8.04, the problem came after updating to 8.10 with
the kernel. The sound is really garbled. It really sounds like the
soundcard is broken or something like that, and the problem is really
easy to recreate if playing a song with a lot of bass.

I have attached the results from the Alsa-information script. Post a
comment if i missed something.

[Bug 295681] [NEW] Intrepid VESA BIOS not detected

2008-11-08 Thread Richard Eames
Public bug reported:

I reinstalled intrepid again this morning, and again am having a lot of
problems with video drivers.
At first boot I couldn't even get a working gdm greeter, instead I get a
garbled mess on the screen.

[rant]
Next I try nv, but a bug I reported during alpha/beta intrepid is still
lingering. (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/283312)
The I try downloading nvidia-glx-177. And I don't have a proper cursor, but a
garbled square, that sometimes disappears. I've searched for this bug on
launchpad, and it looks like the only thing I can do is report to nvidia, which
I have before.
Next I try the nvidia 173 module, still the same.
So I'm left with nouveau, which doesn't work with flash, bochs, or qemu. And
I'm not sure where to report bugs for that.
[/rant]

I'll attach the Xorg.failsafe.log which I think is what the vesa log is.

[Bug 278153] Re: NetworkManager VPN plugins should be installed by default in ubuntu

2008-11-08 Thread Xamusk
Actually, this bug has been reported since Hardy or before (I have seen it
somewhere, but can't find now where) and obviously the Ubuntu team also forgot
about it.
It's specially important to ship VPN plugins not only because of the option
that is there in the UI, but also because in many places one won't get internet
access without a VPN, including many universities. That would of course prevent
the plugin installation in the first place and would force one to seek another
computer to download the packages, which is non-trivial for non-power-users.
