[Bug 276384] Re: Thinkfinger doesn't unlock keyring

2008-11-16 Thread j0rd
The fact that gnome-keyring doesn't support thinkfinger or the settings
in common-auth is actually a security weakness not strength...because if
I have my common-auth set to thinkfinger+password+standing-on-one-
foot+blindfolded, then keyring could simply be unlocked with the
password, which is a WEAKNESS, not a strength and a bug which should get
resolved.

I don't care about the security of data on my laptop. I don't have
"enemies" and the fact that I use linux will deter any stupid thief from
"stealing my data" and by data I mean web history because that's
essentially all I use this for. No nuclear codes on this puppy.

With that said, what I do care about is having to type in another
password to unlock my keyring after I login with thinkfinger. It's
really annoying and adds almost 5 seconds to each login. That's a total
of like 1 minute I could save each WEEK! What I would like is the
ability for keyring to unlock with the settings I have in my common-auth
file. Perhaps, I'm mistaken, but common auth stands for common
authentication and should cascade through to all my applications
including keyring.

[Bug 276463] Re: Enable new Firewire stack in default kernel config

2008-11-16 Thread Christian Kujau
Please reconsider your decision and enable the new stack as a module,
but *use the old one as a default*, as recommended upstream.

Despite possibly existing bugs in the new implementation and/or
libraw1394, Firewire can also be used to attach storage devices, no
libraw1394 involved here. When using the old stack, I got only half the
performance (literally, as in "50% of the performance" when using the
same setup with the new stack). AFAIK the two stacks can co-exist and we
could blacklist the new stack, so that no user will accidently be
provided with the new one. For me, this is the only reason why I have to
recompile the ubuntu kernel - if the new stack would be enabled, I could
use a stock ubuntu kernel. Thanks.

[Bug 298942] [NEW] [needs-packaging] fwbackups

2008-11-16 Thread Saul Thomas
Public bug reported:

fwbackups is an excellent gui file backup application that is more
feature-filled than and I believe comparable to or superior to any such
gui package in the ubuntu repositories. It supports scheduled and
remote backups as well as differential backups with rsync. (Remote ssh
backups seem error-prone with the current gui backup solutions in the
ubuntu repos such as sbackup and pybackpack).

fwbackups is under active development by an open source company called
Diffingo Solutions, Inc. The fwbackups package has been in the fedora
repos since fedora core 5, and it appears to be well regarded on
fedoraforum.org.

[Bug 298944] [NEW] Restart problem after guest login

2008-11-16 Thread Pedrosal
Public bug reported:

After using guest login, I log in back to my only user account.

When I shut down computer, it loops back to login screen, even though I
chose shut down.

I have repeated this various time. The computer only restarts
automatically (even if I choose to switch off) if I had at some stage
used a guest login. It is as if the shut down command has been replaced
by log off command.

Hope that is clear. It is by no means a serious impediment, although it
does require a hard shut down.

Thanks

[Bug 298939] [NEW] Brasero calculates audio duration incorrectly

2008-11-16 Thread Stephen Irons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

1. Drag a 79.4MB audio file into Brasero (about 7:52 minutes according to
Totem).
--> It complains that the file is shorter than 6 seconds and will be padded at
its end
--> It displays the length of the track as 0:06 min
--> It updates the time used in the bar to 00:12 min

2. Drag a second 66.7MB file (about 6:36 according to Totem)
--> Another complaint about the file being too short
--> Displays the track length as 0:06
--> Updates time used to 18:00

The expected behaviour is obvious.

debian/patches/rootbackends-worldreadable.dpatch allowed backends to be

[Bug 181703] Re: Brasero does not recognize audio CD or blank CD-R

2008-11-16 Thread Stephen Irons
Same problem with Intrepid 32 bit: cannot burn a blank CD-R as Brasero
reports its size as 0 min.

A few days ago, however, I did manage to burn a blank CD-R. There were
two differences:

1. I was at work and had an Ethernet network connected, so network
manager reported the network as being on-line. At home I use dialup.
Does Brasero use the network?

2. I had only logged on as myself, with a DVD in the drive. When I have
not been able to burn, I was the second or third (or more) user to log
on (we share a computer) at home). Perhaps the first person to log on
grabs access to the DVD-RW drive and prevents subsequent users from
accessing it?

[Bug 284319] Re: mute, brightness buttons on new HP 6930p laptop

2008-11-16 Thread Dirk
The brightness problem persists. There are at least three events that should
change the brightness of this machine's screen:
- Function keys Fn/F9 and Fn/F10
- Gnome Brightness Applet
- Connect/Disconnect A/C Power

All three have the same results:
- A pop up on the screen indicating brightness going up and down.
- The current value in /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/DD04/brightness changes.
- The brightness of the screen does no change, it remains at 100% if power was
connected during boot or at 44% if the machine booted on battery.

The laptop also has an ambient light sensor that can be enabled or
disabled by pressing Fn F11. This works as intended, and the brightness
of the screen changes with the ambient light. However, this has no
effect on the current value in /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/DD04/brightness.
The BIOS allows me to enable or disable the ambient light sensor, but
this also has no impact on the problem.

[Bug 297675] Re: catalina.policy and bootstrap.jar should be copied on soft linked

2008-11-16 Thread Azamat S. Kalimoulline
Eclipse uses installed tomcat, but create in fact it's own user instance, e.g.
it creates separate server.xml, catalina.policy, catalina.properties,
context.xml, tomcat-users.xml and web.xml configuration files. So, when
configure installed runtime, it can be pointed to system installation (unpacked
zip). There are also can be system configuration, but in Eclipse it might be
redefined, so it can use another port, another polices and so on.
One condition it requires a "valid" tomcat installation. When creating server
runtime in eclipse, it requires bootstrap.jar in bin. When deploying
application it requires catalina.policy file which used as initial
catalina.policy for user installation.
Now I do as you adviced: create my tomcat user instance, link bootstrap.jar and
copy catalina.policy. It works. But I want to do less work and to work my user
instance out of the box in Eclipse.

Yeah, I can confirm too that the workaround suggested by Nosrevelk works

Maybe the compiz team should work on the function that the workaround

That suggests you probably rebooted your system since receiving this

[Bug 298935] [NEW] test print uses far too much ink

2008-11-16 Thread Nick Ellery
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

Doing a test print for a colour printer requires users up far too much
ink. You get the Ubuntu logo, as well as each colour, in each percent,
and a nice dotted border to go along with it. Now realistically, there
should only be a few lines for yellow, cyan, and magenta, and the Ubuntu
logo really isn't necessary.

In this day and age, ink costs quite a bit of money, and wasting it on a
test print really isn't what should happen. Perhaps the default test
print should be a few lines, as suggested above, and a specific test
print, for each colour can be optional.

I hate to bring it up, but tests prints in Windows are as simple as
that.

[Bug 200338] Re: no sound hardy kernel 2.6.24-12

2008-11-16 Thread crtlbreak
apologies anagor for the delayed response - it has been a hellova week for me -
the sound issue was way down on the agenda.
I have uninstalled the vitualbox-ose modules and after a reboot it has not
solved the problem.

The sound does however return when I boot with "Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel
2.6.24-21-generic"
on grub boot options as opposed to the current "Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel
2.6.24-21-386" where the sound does not work. I have posted both dmesg as
attachments

Now I know the short term fix to that one (just boot with the working
kernel) but that is the sole reason yourself and most of us are
registered users and take part in this whole exercise - we would not
simply accept the temp fix as a final solution - we need to get to the
bottom of it, right?

I have attached my dmesg - within the test file are two sections - NOSOUND and
SOUNDWORKING

[Bug 253629] Re: Computer automatically turns on after proper shutdown from ubuntu

2008-11-16 Thread ivancete
Hi, I have a similar problem, I'm also have a MSI motherboard, the model is
"MSI 848 P Neo-V" In my case, after successfully shut down the computer from
Ubuntu, this is turned on immediately after being turned off. This does not
happen from Windows XP, so the BIOS settings are ok.
A couple of times, changing values in grub file menu.list, I could fix it but
that solution is not served on other occasions.

This happens since I installed 8.04, never report this error, but It
happened long ago. Never came up with 7.10 or 7.04. Only in 8.04

Can the bug be fixed in 8.04? (I don't want to install 8.10 now)

Thanks

[Bug 259214] Re: wired connection settings are lost after reboot

2008-11-16 Thread Psy[H[]
Auto eth0 will come back, because it is default config for specific card.
Problem is in gaining root privileges to save system-wide config.
In Hardy with NM from ppa everything in this area worked, so I could create new
config, assign it to specific card by mac-adress, then turn on "system setting"
and autoconnection for it, with promting a root password. Then disable
autoconnection for default configs.
Now I just have to click on needed custom config after every startup. So this
bug results in two excessive clicks.

Summing up: Name of the bug is incorrct, IMHO, because custom settings are
saved, but cannot be applied system-wide.
Also there is lack of feature: prevent deletion or editing of default configs
(except autoconnection setting) , so many users can be confused when default
configs come back and destroy settings, that were put in them.

I have still 90 revision to test (I started with almost 18000) but as I
understood the problem came out in the 2.6.26-rc9 version, I'm still seaching
which specific revision.
2.6.26-rc8 seems to be free from the bug but 2.6.26 is affected

Some revisions of the 2.6.26-rc9 are affected, some others no.

I'll probably work on it again the next weekend.

Bye
Nitto

RE: [Bug 279802] Re: hotmail blocks ubuntu users (we knew it!)

2008-11-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Dear tetsuo__shima,
Thank you very much for your help. I managed to fix the problem fully with your
help. I am also now managing to send a reply through ubuntu firefox. This
problem was a real niusance, probably caused by microsoft since ubuntu is a
more stable system and they are trying to put stumbling blocks. I am a bit
green when it comes to linux but starting to get used to ubuntu now.

Anyway thank you.

[Bug 298927] [NEW] Battery, suspend after resume broken, fan control is weird.

2008-11-16 Thread Zack Cornelius
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.10, upgraded through Intrepid Alphas to current. Similar laptop
on fresh intrepid install exhibits same behavior.

ACPI in intrepid seems to be broken for my HP Compaq C712NR laptop.

Some stuff is just broken after a suspend/resume, some are broken all
the time.

Broken all the time:

Fan speed is an all or nothing, so it heats up to way hotter than it
normally should, then is on for 5 seconds at full speed, off for 5
seconds. In Hardy, fan was an average 1/3(ish) speed unless I was doing
something CPU intensive.

Broken after resume from S3 (Suspend to RAM):

Resume from S3 a second time fails (No attempt to load, just black
screen, no hard drive activity).

ACPI cannot find battery after S3 resume ("[ 8422.812268] ACPI: Battery
Slot [BAT0] (battery absent)" in dmesg during the resume)

ACPI cannot detect an AC adapter after S3 resume. Probably connected to
the battery issue above, after resume ACPI does not detect a AC power
source. (I'm confused at what ACPI thinks is powering the computer at
this point)

Attached is tarball of /proc/acpi after a resume, working /proc/acpi to
come later (After I reboot).

Robb Topolski's addition to Lazarusrat's workaround worked for me. My

fixed things.

[Bug 279102] Re: Unreliable network connection with B44 driver

2008-11-16 Thread MikkoD
With a vanilla 2.6.28-rc5 kernel on a amilo l1310g laptop with
ATI ixp SB400 chipset and Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX (rev 02)
I have the same problem.

The nic would just stop working completely under heavy load, but after adding
the kernel option "irqpoll" it now just
resets the connection every once in a while as reported here by others.

.
.
b44: eth0: powering down PHY
b44: eth0: Link is down.
b44: eth0: Link is up at 100 Mbps, full duplex.
b44: eth0: Flow control is off for TX and off for RX.
b44: eth0: powering down PHY
.
.

On a standard intrepid 2.6.27 kernel network seems fine, but the audio
sometimes breaks up (stutters) after a while until a reboot. So there
seems to be some interrupt conflict?

[Bug 298924] [NEW] network manager incorrectly starts auto eth0 interface on boot

2008-11-16 Thread arcwhite
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

In latest release, updated 8.10:

I've created a wired interface called 'Ethernet', which is a manual
configuration on my sole NIC.
I've told it to 'connect automatically'.
Similarly, I've set the connection 'Auto eth0' to 'never connect'.

When I boot my computer, the interface selected is auto eth0, which
grabs a dynamic IP address, which is not what I desire. I have to
manually switch to my 'Ethernet' connection to get the settings I want.
I would expect that on boot, my manual ethernet configuration should be
loaded automatically (as I have checked the appropriate boxes to
indicate my desire that it be so!)

I've tried setting my 'Ethernet' connection to be a 'system setting'
too, to no avail (even after setting auto eth0 to NOT be a 'system
setting'). As a usability issue, that checkbox might need a little more
explanation.

[Bug 256267] Re: please update to 0.9.1

2008-11-16 Thread Jamie Lokier
Nick Ellory wrote: "there only appears to be more minor bug fixes".

I think supporting KVM is a pretty major new feature.

Especially as KVM is Ubuntu's official VM solution, and virt-manager
(the other GUI which manages KVM) is not always the best tool, depending
on what you do with your VMs.

Hi Andres,

Yes. I tried with the kernel in proposed and it still has a problem.
When I say I compile uvcvideo from svn I meant from here:
http://svn.berlios.de/svnroot/repos/linux-uvc/linux-uvc/trunk which is
currently at revision 263. I am not sure how this is connected with the
svn repo in your link.

[Bug 289600] Re: Should depend on libavformat52 or libavformat-unstripped-52

Thank you Lionel. Doesn't this the bug apply gpac/intrepid though? When
I saw your fix for jaunty in comment 15 I just thought it wouldn't be
fixed for intrepid. Or does one need to file a separate bug for gpac so
that this is fixed in intrepid too?

[Bug 174727] Re: gksu inherits current window's keyboard layout

2008-11-16 Thread Yaron Tausky
Yes. Steps to reproduce:
1. Set the current window's keyboard layout to something other than the default
2. Launch Synaptic from the System menu
For added effect, if the current window's keyboard layout is for a RTL script,
the asterisks in gksu will appear from right to left when you type (which
serves as a good indicator that it's using the wrong layout).

[Bug 288307] Re: Scrolling locks system up

2008-11-16 Thread Kerin
Okay, a little more diagnostic information here.

Windows created prior to loading the Wine 3D app will scroll properly;
windows created after the fact do not. Minimizing a window that was
created first (and scrolls properly) and subsequently unminimizing it
will cause the scroll-hangup issue to affect that window as well.

---
soya (0.14-1ubuntu1) jaunty; urgency=low

  * Merge from Debian experimental (LP: #295540), remaining changes:
- Add debian/pyversions file
  * Remove debian/pycompat

soya (0.14-1) experimental; urgency=low

  * New upstream release (Closes: #491194)
  * Adopt the package.
  * Add VCS fields in debian/control.
  * Switch to Standards-Version 3.8.0. No changes required.
  * Remove unneeded debian/pycompat.
  * Add a patch to enable pyrex compilation even if we don't compile from
SVN.

soya (0.13.2-5) unstable; urgency=high

  * Applied patch from Peter De Wachter to use openal audio device
autodetection, as the device naming scheme changed, resulting in
application crash when sound is initialized (Closes: #493163).
  * Applied patch from Peter De Wachter (thanks a lot) to fix build with
newer pyrex, and reactivated pyrex code build instead of relying
upon precompiled code (which was a way to save buildd resources)
(Closes: #496694). Enforced the pyrex version to avoid a nasty bug
in generated code.
  * Replaced Build-Depends on libglu1-xorg-dev with its successor
libglu1-mesa-dev.

This may be bogus, because I may have misunderstood what the issues are
here -- I came looking for an answer for my XPS M1330, where the

Anyway, I checked the Sound Preferences and changed Default Mixer Tracks
driver from HDA to Playback: ALSA PCM - and now they work!

I'm on Intrepid BTW.
