[Bug 291408] Re: Bluetooth Mighty Mouse: hidp HID_QUIRK_INVERT_HWHEEL actually inverts wheel wrong way!

2008-12-05 Thread bitinerant
This problem has frustrated me ever since I upgraded to Intrepid. I
have the same model of Mighty Mouse; here is the applicable line from
`cat /proc/bus/input/devices`:

I: Bus=0005 Vendor=05ac Product=030c Version=0200

I don't think I'm up to compiling a new kernel. I have tried many
variations in my "/etc/hal/fdi/policy/mightymouse.fdi" file, but none
seem to change the way my mouse operates (vertical wheel scrolling is
fine; horizontal wheel scrolling is reverse).

Is there a work-around via an fdi file, or is the kernel patch the only
work-around at this time?

[Bug 87805] Re: "users and groups" empty since upgrade

2008-12-05 Thread David Burgess
I have this problem, although not directly due to an upgrade. I had to
reinstall 8.10 from scratch (upgrade from 8.04 was a bomb). I left my
/home partition intact. I then attempted to restore my users' accounts
and passwords by pasting lines from backed-up /etc/passwd, group,
shadow, and gshadow files. I didn't replace the new file entirely from
backup, just lines pertinent to my 1000+ uid users.

Overall the operation appears to be a success; my users can log in and
their files and settings are intact. But there are some odd side-
effects, like my primary login (uid 1000) was removed from the admin
group in the process. I'm pretty sure I didn't do that manually, but I
had to boot up in recovery mode to re-add it. I'm pretty sure my messing
around with those four files caused all my users to disappear from that
window.

So maybe I'm the bug in this scenario. [ducks.]

[Bug 305683] [NEW] pidgin does not log on to yahoo and msn while it worked fine yesterday

2008-12-05 Thread Randy Tan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

After installing Ubuntu 8.04 last night, I tried to log on to Yahoo!
Messenger via Pidgin and it worked fine but when I tried to log in this
morning, it would not work for some reason.

I just get a blank Pidgin Buddy List and it just says Available -
connecting beside an icon of an unplugged plug & socket.

Any way to fix this? Most of my contacts are on YM and I need to keep in
touch with them.

If Pidgin works, it saves me the trouble of either downloading a program
for it or logging on via Firefox just to access my messenger.

I'd appreciate all assistance and support.

Thanks.

[Bug 305678] [NEW] Unresponsive extract button with multi-part rar file

2008-12-05 Thread Scott Ritchie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

This one is a little strange, but it is reproducible for me on my local
setup. I open a multi-part rar file by double clicking the .r00 file,
then I click extract. The default folder shown is the current
directory, but when I click extract nothing happens - the button clicks
but the dialog acts as though nothing happened. Other buttons work as
expected; it's as though extract simply does nothing.

What's even stranger is the workaround I've discovered: I can then use
the same dialog to change the directory (eg going to the parent folder),
and then I can go back to the same folder I was in. Then the extract
button works fine.

[Bug 305676] [NEW] rfkill switch causes iwl3945 to hang, affects shutdown

2008-12-05 Thread YenTheFirst
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure which package this is in:

I have a lenovo x60 tablet, which has an intel wireless card, with a hardware
kill switch.
I'm running kubuntu 8.04, 64 bit.

The problem is, using the kill switch causes multiple processes to go
into an uninterpretable sleep (disk I/O sleep)

Steps to reproduce:

1. Upon booting, wireless card works normally, and can access internet.
2. Switch the hardware kill switch. The wireless LED goes off.
3. Switch the kill switch back. The LED comes back on, but the card is
unusable. In a process manager, the iwl3945 process is marked as being in 'D'
state.
4. Attempts to use 'sudo' also immediately go into a 'D' state
5. Attempt to shut down, or suspend, computer. Computer begins to shut down,
but does not complete it.
6. upon hard power-down and reboot, the card works normally again.

[Bug 291760] Re: network-manager roams to (none) ((none))

2008-12-05 Thread Andreas Jonsson
I just tested to remove the ath5k atheros driver (provided by linux-
backports-modules) in System/Admin/Hardware and this solves the problem
in this bug, i.e. "roaming ot (none)..." don't occur anymore. However,
without ath5k the default ath_pci module (madwifi) is used, which for me
gives intermittent kernel panic freezes as described in the bug quoted
above.

[Bug 302870] Re: add support for setting up encrypted home directory on user creation

2008-12-05 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Updated patch attached.

This patch introduces two changes based on Martin's feedback...
 1) drops ecryptfs-utils from a Recommends to a Suggests
 2) moves the &which() call to the parameter sanity checking section, such that
calling adduser --encrypt-home when ecryptfs-setup-private is not installed
will yield a meaningful error message and exit non-zero before half-adding a
user to the system.

I've retested and this seems to work much better. Thanks for the
suggestion and the careful review!

Cheers,
:-Dustin

2008-12-05 Thread Andreas Jonsson
I can confirm this bug. I get the same problem, i.e. regular loss of
connection every two minutes or so due to roaming to "(none)" and back
to my preferred network.

I'm running

ubuntu 8.10
network-manager 0.7~~svn20081018t105859-0ubuntu1

This problem started to occur after I installed

linux-backports-modules-2.6.27-9-generic

as a means to address the wifi related kernel panic bug #276990.

I'm using an atheros based 802.11abg card.

Detailed logs follows.

I also stumbled across this problem, but I fixed it in a slightly

to usb_endpoint? Using udevinfo, I get "SUBSYSTEM == input". I'm
pretty confident I'm looking at the right entry because the ATTR{name}
match works, and it is unique to that entry. Any help appreciated.

[Bug 238021] Re: Please sync cgal 3.3.1-3 (multiverse) from Debian unstable (main)

2008-12-05 Thread fabrice_sp
I've been able to successfully build cgal 3.3.1-4 in a jaunty pbuilder, so
please sync cgal 3.3.1-4 from testing.
I'll update the title and the content of this bug report to match versions

** Changed in: cgal (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete => New

** Summary changed:

- Please sync cgal 3.3.1-3 (multiverse) from Debian unstable (main)
+ Please sync cgal 3.3.1-4 (multiverse) from Debian testing (main)

** Description changed:

Here is the most recent Ubuntu entry in debian/changelog:

  cgal (3.3.1-2ubuntu1) hardy; urgency=low

* Update build-depends in debian/control for gfortran transition
(patch from Kumar Appaiah, see Debian #470359), LP: #201962.
* Add debian/patches/gfortran_transition.dpatch (other hunks from above
patch) for g77 to gfortran transition. Add it to debian/patches/00list.
* debian/control: update maintainer field as per spec.

All of the build depends present in Ubuntu are also present in Debian.
debian/patches/gfortran_transition.dpatch has been added in Debian as
debian/patches/fortran_transition.dpatch. This can be seen by this
  Debian changelog entry:

+ cgal (3.3.1-4) unstable; urgency=low
+
+* Remove fortran-transition.dpatch, update build-library.dpatch:
+ Do not link with -lg2c in configuration tests (Closes: #475721).
+* Update cgal_create_makefile.dpatch to remove bashisms (Closes: #486045).
+* Update debian/tests/rounding_modes2.cpp to stop constant propagation.
+* Update Standards-Version to 3.8.0 (explain in debian/copyright why
package
+ is in non-free).

[Bug 305670] [NEW] Nautilus icons restricted to one screen in Openbox\GNOME session

2008-12-05 Thread Super Jamie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openbox

When using an Openbox\GNOME session with two nVidia TwinView screens, I
can only place Nautilus icons on the "primary" screen of the TwinView.

Windows maximize properly (covering one screen only), the gnome-panel works as
expected (one panel per screen, window-list only reports windows on that
screen), right-clicking on the "dead" area produces the usual Nautilus "Create
folder" menu, and wallpaper is drawn across both screens. "xprop | grep
WM_CLASS" on the "dead" desktop area produces
  WM_CLASS(STRING) = "desktop_window", "Nautilus"

This happens regardless of whether I'm using xcompmgr or not, I have not
tested with Xinerama enabled instead of TwinView.

If I switch to Metacity, either by using "metacity --replace" or a
normal GNOME session, the problem goes away, and I can move icons to the
second screen. If I then run "openbox --replace", icons maintain their
moved position, but snap back to the first screen when I try to move
them around.

[Bug 305669] [NEW] Akonadi's Apparmor profile does not work with Encrypted Private Directory overlays

2008-12-05 Thread John Dong
Public bug reported:

I am using EncryptedPrivateDirectory on my system so .local is a symlink
into Private/.local which is an ecryptfs mount. As a result, akonadi
dies at startup. To get it working locally, I had to add the rules:

  @{HOME}/.Private/.local/share/akonadi/** rkw,
  @{HOME}/Private/.local/share/akonadi/** rkw,

ecryptFS is a two-layer overlay so both the rules for the overlay and underlay
are required.

I think it's a good idea to support this fairly standard EcryptFS setup
in the default AA profile.

[Bug 305182] Re: Everytime I sign on, my IM will not enable, takes a long time to do so, hours

2008-12-05 Thread iamtobi
In my case, I went to log on to Pidgin as usual. I enter my password,
and the program usually takes me to my friends list. As of right now, it
is sitting in the limbo that usually takes less than five seconds
between when I sign on, and when I'm actually IN my messenger. I've now
let it sit for twenty minutes, and it will NOT log me in. I've tried two
other screen names I have, and it's the same problem across the board.
Any ideas?

[Bug 302994] Re: 1 in 10 boots freeze with kernel panic if USB-disk is left connected

2008-12-05 Thread metellius
Right now, I actually happen to be trying out 2.6.2.28 from jaunty, so I
got this version signature:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /proc/version_signature
cat: /proc/version_signature: No such file or directory
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.28-1-ub-generic ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.3.3
20081122 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.3.2-2ubuntu4) ) #1 SMP Wed Nov 26 19:15:48 UTC
2008

And it still happens in that kernel, if that is enough to confirm that
the bug is still there.

But OK, I will try with this proposed kernel as well for a few boots and
update here if the problem still occurs.

I hope it will attract the attention of someone who could provide us a

[Bug 298804] Re: Hibernate fails on Dell Inspiron 8600 with Intrepid

2008-12-05 Thread Marek
Similar problem with suspend on the Dell Inspiron 8600. Entering
suspend mode seems to go without a hitch, but returning gives an
identical error:

[*.] pm_op(): pci_pm_restore + 0x0/0x80 returns -16
[*.] PM: Device :00:00.0 failed to restore: error -16

Followed by a blank screen and then color bleeding.

I'm attaching another log of the suspend case. If there is any more
information needed, let me know.

[Bug 305664] [NEW] gnome-terminal keyboard shortcuts don't allow change

2008-12-05 Thread Ridgeland
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

In gnome-terminal could not get keyboard shortcuts to accept changes. Changes
are ignored.
My fix was to edit using gconf-editor. Change /apps/gnome-terminal/keybindings
and change the fields there (copy, paste was all I wanted to change, but was
not allowed to from just gnome-terminal)
Default installation does not have directory
~/.gconf/apps/gnome-terminal/keybindings needs also it's one file %gconf.xml.
Without that cannot edit keyboard shortcuts. After gconf-editor the directory
and file exists.
Request: in creating the user account also create the missing keybindings file
so edits are possible.
Ubuntu 8.10 (I think I also saw this problem in 8.04)

[Bug 153690] Re: dependency error - kasumi must be included in Japanese language support

2008-12-05 Thread Chris
Can confirm this is still the case in 8.10 (64bit).

Language support added for Japanese, all options checked under details,
X restarted (just in case). Original steps are still reproducible.

Also from the command line:

  $ kasumi
The program 'kasumi' is currently not installed. You can install it by
typing:
  sudo apt-get install kasumi
  bash: kasumi: command not found

If I install the package manually all is then fine.

I see "scim-anthy" package only suggests "kasumi", but that is not
obvious to find from the normal ubuntu menu commands. Would suggest
making it mandatory.

[Bug 305661] Re: No support for VIA 8235 in Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.25-2-386

2008-12-05 Thread Neuron Upheaval
** Description changed:

I have just migrated from Hardy Heron to Intrepid Ibex. After reboot,
there was not sound, even the typical logon sound wasn't working.

Searching the web, I found out that it's possible to troubleshoot the
audio card setup by typing "aplay -l" at the shell.

It reported no audio cards so I believe that the new OS kernel does not
have support for the VIA 8235 embedded audio card, which is what I've
  got here.
+
+ I solved the audio issue by picking the old kernel (namely
+ 2.6.24-22-386) at bootup time (by typing ESC during GRUB startup).

[Bug 305660] [NEW] "Applications > Add/Remove..." Empty

2008-12-05 Thread CptSkyhawk
Public bug reported:

Really nothing much to say... I go to "Applications > Add/Remove..." and
there's nothing there. It looks just like it does in the picture.

Synaptic still works to install programs (but this is not acceptable for
the users I administer), and updating still works fine with "System >
Administration > Update Manager". I can also update and install from
the command line.

However, no combination of searching or selecting will make anything
appear on the "Applications > Add/Remove..." window.

I'm experiencing this behaviour on three separate machines -- 1) a
clean install of Ubuntu 8.04, 2) a 8.10 upgrade from 8.04, and 3) a
virtual machine running 8.10 on a Windows host.

Still an issue. Current configuration looks like this:

Linux pokeefe-laptop 2.6.27-10-generic #1 SMP Fri Nov 21 12:00:22 UTC
2008 i686 GNU/Linux
Ubuntu 8.10

cups-config --version

gedit 2.24.2

One remote printer configured as default:
lpp://10.0.0.1:631/printers/Photosmart-C4200-series

Second machine is currently powered off. Print dialog in gedit hangs
for approximately 1 minute in this configuration before giving me a
dialog that allows selecting an alternate printer. If I power on the
machine with the printer attached, dialog is instantaneous.

[Bug 305659] [NEW] can't mount webDAV folder through local proxy

2008-12-05 Thread George Cail
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: davfs2

in 7.10 I could mount a work webDAV folder on my system using davfs2. I
use a local proxy. Although I have used the same config files and set
up, it will not work in 8.10. Instead I get a backtrace and memory dump
when I try to mount. I tried installing 8.04 on another computer to try
davfs2 on it, but got an error message when installing davfs2 "I wasn't
able to locate a file for the libneon26 package. This might mean you
need to manually fix this package. (due to missing arch)" So I don't
know if this was working in 8.04.

I am using Kubuntu 8.10 and the davfs2 package is 1.3.3-1ubuntu1.

Normally, with a proxy configured in /etc/davfs2/davfs2.conf, when I
mounted the folder, I should have gotten first a question about the
username to use with the proxy server. But that question never came.
Instead I was asked for the username and then the password for the
webDAV server. Upon hitting enter after the password I get the backtrace
and memory dump mentioned above.

** Affects: davfs2 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 305015] Re: linux-image-2.6.27-10-generic causes audio skips under CPU load

2008-12-05 Thread Daniel T Chen
This issue is unlikely to be sound driver-related: there are no
emu10k1-related changes between -8 and -10. If you bypass pulseaudio
altogether (and just use alsa) for GSt audiosink, does banshee still
exhibit the erratic behaviour?

Please attach the contents of /etc/pulse/daemon.conf.
