Re: [Bug 271074] Re: [quanta] Malformed URL sftp, ftp

2008-12-14 Thread hapee
I am using it in the same way as eNz1m3 and as Davide reported (thanks).
It has a little overhead but for the rest is works fine and am able to
work with Quanta.

It is indeed very disappointing that the community is not able to
maintain packages that are important, I cannot imagen that there are
more people working with Quanta and are not suffering from this.

[Bug 308121] [NEW] An extra copy of libpng12.so.0 keeps appearing

2008-12-14 Thread SE
Public bug reported:

When I install new upgrades etc., a symbolic link for libpng12.so.0 appears in
/usr/local/lib/
which make the system unstable (e.g. Add/Remove and Upgrade manager would not
start)
this can be fixed by:
rm /usr/local/lib/libpng12.so.0
However since this problem hunts me for a long time and was present even before
I upgraded from Gutsy I was wondering if this bug can be permanently fixed.
My system:
Release 8.04 (hardy)
Kernel Linux 2.6.24-22-generic
GNOME 2.22.3
Processors: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz

[Bug 218165] Re: No sound on Acer Aspire 8920G with H.Heron 8.04 Beta x86_64 and Realtek ALC889 and Intel HDA 82801H

2008-12-14 Thread pedja_portugalac
@Jojo

It work for me. Thank you very very s much.
I can hear music, great quality sounds, on integrated 5.1 speakers and my
headphones works too. I was around for few days installing new alsa from source
via scripts I found on forums and because of that I had to reinstall Ubuntu on
and on. But with this simple two lines added to alsa-base my nightmares are
over and goodbay f. Vista. Thanks ones again and I wish you Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year...

This is what I have done:

Install fresh Ubuntu 8.10
Update system and reboot
Install proprietary graphics driver for NVIDIA cards (177) and reboot
Open terminal and type:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

Add this to the end:

# added by myself
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=auto

Reboot and it works perfectly.

For me this bug is solved thanks Jojo.

[Bug 308116] [NEW] Fluxbox "edit clock format" *must* change clock format

2008-12-14 Thread wolfger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: fluxbox

1) Description: Ubuntu jaunty (development branch) Release:9.04
2) fluxbox: Installed: 1.1.1-1
3) I right-click on the toolbar and select "edit clock format". I expect to be
able to exit out of this dialog without making any changes
4) Dialog window pops up, but nothing makes it go away until I make a change
and hit the enter key. Hitting enter without making a change does nothing.
There is no close button, no right-click menu, and clicking elsewhere on the
desktop does not make it vanish. If I right-click the toolbar and select the
same option again, I get a second dialog box on top of the first one.

[Bug 308114] [NEW] hald-addon-storage uses up all CPU when DVD is ejected

2008-12-14 Thread Roshan George
Public bug reported:

Ejecting a DVD caused hald-addon-storage to go to 90% CPU (oddly,
liferea-bin also went to 90% CPU, but killing hald-addon-storage
alleviated the problem). I can't seem to reliably replicate this. It has
happened once or twice.

Steps:
1. Set dev.cdrom.lock=0 in /etc/sysctl.conf
2. Have a DVD in the drive.
3. Hit the Eject button on the laptop
4. hald-addon-storage eats CPU _sometimes_.

[Bug 298262] Re: Adept "report bug" doesn't work

2008-12-14 Thread wolfger
I'm currently using a 64-bit Xubuntu install that was manually dist-
upgraded to Jaunty, and the bug does not exist here, though the version
still says 3.0 beta 4. Originally reported on 32-bit Ubuntu install.
Could it be a 32-bit problem?

Also, Jonathan Thomas says it's a bug against all apps run with kdesudo.
That may be another difference as I don't have kdesudo installed on my
Jaunty drive, and simply ran "sudo adept" from a command line when Adept
did not appear in my Fluxbox menu after installation.

virtual CDs that the user has mounted, generally by right clicking a
.iso file and (in Intrepid) selecting "Open with Archive Mounter".

Currently, these are stored in ~/.gvfs/ when using the Gnome archive
mounter, though it would be nice to have a cross-desktop way of doing
this, or at least symlinking to it.

Wine should provide a letter symlink that points to the latest of these
drives to be mounted. This way we can handle the case where a user
mounts more than a single drive, generally when multi-CD installs are
done (in which case unmounting the original might not work well due to
open files).

[Bug 291467] Re: Delayed Intrepid Login

2008-12-14 Thread David Tombs
I've done a bit of research on this, and here's what I've come up with.
I'm a newb, so sorry if some of this was obvious.

So, gconf key /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager
on my system lists gnome-wm. I'm assuming this means gnome-session is
going to look for something called gnome-wm to be the window manager. It
probably finds this in /usr/share/gnome/autostart/gnome-wm.desktop.

Now, this (IMO pretty ugly) script locates whatever window manager you
have selected and runs it. Meanwhile, it seems gnome-session is waiting
for some GObject signal "registered" from gnome-wm (or whatever app it
launches). Since everything works fine with Metacity, I assume Metacity
sends this signal, gnome-session gets it (as evidenced by no warnings in
.xsession-errors), and everything's great. In the case of Compiz, I
don't think it's sent (or at least not received), so gnome-session waits
around for a while for this signal to get sent, but it never happens.
Boo.

Why does gnome-session wait for this "registered" deal? I think it's
because of the line in gnome-wm.desktop:

X-GNOME-Autostart-Phase=WindowManager

So, I guess all window managers (ie, things loaded during the
WindowManager phase) should send this "registered" signal at some point.
Compiz doesn't seem to, so I think this is actually a Compiz bug.

Other wiser opinions?

PS: Is it possible to run gnome-session with debug logging on?

[Bug 308085] Re: progress bar doesn't paint correctly on vertical panels

Hi Martin,

I've got a backport of the latest version of the workrave package from
Debian (1.9.0-6) in my personal package archive:

  deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/fmarier/ubuntu hardy main

(It should be hardy, not intrepid since I haven't yet re-uploaded the

Could you check whether your problem is fixed in that version (which is
essentially the same as Jaunty)?

Thanks,

I guess we are not alone. Fedora also seems to have issues as well as
Open Suse.

The forum describes how Hardy fixed his issue but I dunno if they upgraded to

I would guess that the bug comes from Pulse not regognising Alsa very well
maybe in the libsdl1.2debian library.

[Bug 191871] Re: Live CD won't install on Acer Aspire 3050-1922

2008-12-14 Thread yakuizhao
Hi, David
From the 2.6.22.14 dmesg log it seems that there exists the following
errors:
 >ACPI Error (psargs-0355): [\_SB_.PHSR] Namespace lookup failure,
AE_NOT_FOUND
 >ACPI Error (psparse-0551): Method parse/execution failed
[\_SB_.PCI0.LPC0.EC0_._REG] (Node da0b05a0), AE_NOT_FOUND

As the PHSR object doesn't exist, it causes that the EC _REG object can't
be executed correclty. In such case the EC device can't be initialized
correctly.
Will you please try the latest kernel(2.6.28-rc6/7) and see whether the
system can be booted with ACPI enabled?
In fact we have a similiar bug in kernel bugzilla(bug 8953, 10237). The
two boxes can't be booted with ACPI enabled as there is no PHSR object.
thanks.

[Bug 272527] Re: rkward: 'No (valid) plugins found', therefore no menu items

2008-12-14 Thread pauljohn32
I'm running R 2.8 on Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid. rkward installs, but it
doesn't run for a variety of reasons described in this and other
threads.

I noticed the subversion address given in note 3 above is incorrect. It
has this:

svn co https://rkward.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/trunk rkward

but instead it should be:

svn co https://rkward.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/rkward/trunk rkward

I'm building that on Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid) to see if it fixes the
problem. I am very reluctant to run "make install" as root because it
will copy crap all over my file system. So I tried the temporary
install approach

make install DESTDIR=/tmp/rktest

and then that drops the rkward install directory in a safe place.
Running the executable seems to go a lot better than the version in the
Ubuntu system. I still get a cautionary warning about the plugin path,
but at least rkward does start and show working menus for many elements.
Before, I couldn't even get a settings menu open.

It looks to me as though there is still something wrong with the plugin system,
though. Note the error message at the end of the terminal output. It may be I
only see the problem because I installed off the beaten path, but I will and
wait to hear what you think before I go further.

[Bug 307961] Re: Disk total stats are double

2008-12-14 Thread Noel J. Bergman
According to http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/iostats.txt,
the information changed after 2.6.24:

"There are only *four* fields available for partitions on 2.6 machines."
"In 2.6.25, the full statistic set is again available for partitions and disk
and partition statistics are consistent again."

This might explain the difference between Hardy (2.6.24) and the rest
(2.6.27 and later).

[Bug 308085] [NEW] progress bar doesn't paint correctly on vertical panels

2008-12-14 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: workrave

I created a gnome panel on the left side of my screen, and dragged the
workrave applet onto it. The countdown still runs, and workrave seems
to be functioning correctly, but the bar does not fill up as work and
rest periods run. Typically there is just a small cyan part drawn at
the bottom, but other colors also appear.

[Bug 305404] Re: Upgrade comix to version 4.0.1

2008-12-14 Thread perfectska04
** Summary changed:

- Upgrade comix to version 4.0.0
+ Upgrade comix to version 4.0.1

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: comix

- Comix 4.0.0 has been released, and it would be great to have an updated
- package for jaunty/intrepid.
+ Comix 4.0.1 has been released, here is the official changelog:
+ - Croatian translation updated by Adrian C.
+ - Polish translation updated by Darek Jakoniuk.
+ - Russian translation updated by Артем Смирнов.
+ - Simplified Chinese translation updated by Xie Yanbo.
+ - Re-added the "flip pages when scrolling off the page" preference from
previous Comix versions. Thanks to Mamoru Tasaka.
+ - Added a portability module for handling home directories in a more portable
way. Thanks to Oddegamra.

+ Comix 4.0.0 has been released, and it would be great to have an updated
package for jaunty/intrepid.
Here's the changelog from the project's homepage:
Comix has been completely rewritten from scratch. On the surface things look
quite a bit like they used to, but the internal workings are entirely new.
There are too many changes for them all to be mentioned here, but a couple of
highlights are a much more functional library and a new archive editing dialog.
The work on this new version of Comix has been going on in rather sporadic
phases for almost two years, and during that time I have received help from
lots of different people.

Re: [Bug 308058] Re: no sound modules

2008-12-14 Thread Anand Kumria
Hi Luke,

No, it does not explicitly need the 386 kernel.

Unfortunately, due to bug 304871, I switched down to the 386 kernel.
Which resulted in no working sound.

Obviously I would like both -- I'm not fussy which kernel provides
that; I do know that kernel 2.6.27 provides working video, so I hope
that you just re-roll the .27 package with additional modules rather
than upgrading the version.

Thanks,
Anand

During conversation with Kopete and Yahoo IM I tried to copy the sender's text
into my Thunderbird 2 email message (I am trying to send an Email) using right
click then copy then paste. Then I tried the Ctrl+c and Ctrl+v, Both methods
does not work. Basically, I cant paste into Thunderbird 2 Email messages with
normal paste.

Appreciate if someone can confirm this.

Kopete can only do the following:
1. Copy from text that I sent in Kopete to Thunderbird email message (both
methods above).
2. Copy from sender's text to OpenOffice.org 2.4.1
3. Copy from sender's text (Ctrl+c) to Thunderbird email message by right click
then choose "Paste without formatting".

[Bug 120434] Re: [needs-packaging] Ricoh R5U87x Webcam userland tools

2008-12-14 Thread Andres Mujica
@wvengen thanks for your report, as this bug now is intended to package
those userland tools, it would be great if you can attach or publish via
PPA the package that you've made.

Thanks a lot for your help

** Summary changed:

- [needs-packaging] Ricoh R5U870 Webcam Driver
+ [needs-packaging] Ricoh R5U87x Webcam userland tools

** Description changed:

- The Ricoh R5U870 Webcam Driver available here
- http://wiki.mediati.org/R5u870 (formerly
- http://lsb.blogdns.net/ry5u870/) is not included in current releases of
- Ubuntu which makes it difficult for end user to enjoy their integrated
- webcams. This driver is used in Sony Vaio laptops integrated webcams,
- among others.
+ The driver R5U870 is being replaced by a set of R5U87x userland tools
+ that load the firmware for the uvcvideo supported webcams and make those
+ work with the standard driver.
+
+ At this moment the WDM webcameras are only supported by the previous
+ R5U870 module.
+
+ The webcams supported by the userland tools are marked as UVC by this
+ list:
+
+ http://www.bitbucket.org/ahixon/r5u87x/src/881dbd07a263/docs/model_matrix.txt
+
+ Originally this bug report was intended to package the R5U870 module,
+ but at this moment this wouldn't be the best path to follow, as the
+ package really needed is the R5U87x userland tools available here:
+
+ http://www.bitbucket.org/ahixon/r5u87x/
+
+ For the people in need of the original module please go to the bug
+ #219252
+
+ This driver is used in Sony Vaio laptops integrated webcams, among
+ others.

Ubuntu should load this driver whenever the supported devices are
  present

RE: [Bug 218508] Re: dhclient.conf not updating with dns info

2008-12-14 Thread neal
Good question. I can only speak to my last clean install of 8.10 which
was nominal with no dhcp acquisition issues.

I haven't tried the Jackalope yet.

Best, Neal

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 or 9.04?

dhclient.conf not updating with dns info

You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber
of the bug.

Status in “dhcp” source package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

Bug description:
apt: 0.7.9ubuntu16
8.04

New user, two installs of heron with cd to clean hds.

Both installs encountered dns configuration issues after install.
Scenario: user boots, apps access internet for 2-3 minutes, then sit
idle (read email, page, updates, etc.). If no routing requests extend
outside of network, dns records are not retained. Local network
locations are still routable, ping works, but no app can get DNS. To
get out, dhcp release/renew is required.

I was able to research the issue and thanks to handy's post of Oct 17
2006 the
issue was discovered in the dhclient.conf. First, I edited prepend
domain-name-servers and added my two dns entries. Then I changed the
about:config value of IPv6 to false per Handy. Bingo, done. I'd looked
for this solution about a week.

Is there some reason the DNS info is not automatiicaly prepended to the
dhclient.conf file by default? Or if it is supposed to, is this a bug
over two installs? This happened with two different NICs on a Linksys
WRT54GL using standard firmware while accessing an Earthlink powered by
Comcast cable account. Yeah, maybe cheap routers matter, but imho the
dns info should be retained for more than 2-3 minutes of idle time.

Thanks for your attention,

Neal

fix mentioned in the hellanzb bug tracker thread (copied below).

This change enabled me to use hellanzb in Intrepid. According to the
thread, it is also the way Gentoo fixed the problem.
