[Bug 312648] [NEW] package samba 2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3.3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new post-removal script returned error exit status 132

2008-12-30 Thread Richard Corner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

I tried to set up shared folders through the Xubuntu UI (System > Shared
Folders). I was prompted to install NFS and/or SMB, so I chose both. A
dependency problem with NFS was identified and it was left unconfigured.
I decided I didn't need NFS so uninstalled both nfs-common and nfs-
kernel-server through Synaptic. I could not get the Shared Folders
application to allow me to set up SMB alone, so I went into Synaptic and
tried to reinstall Samba. That reinstallation gave the current error.

[Bug 306916] Re: [i945] screen shows temporary garbage then goes blank, falls into low-graphics mode

2008-12-30 Thread erica hollis
Hi, I am getting similar problems after installing Intrepid on my Lenovo
3000 C100 laptop - sometimes it doesn't even start up properly - going
to a black screen rather than login prompt but more often doing exactly
as Scott says above after variable amounts of time.

I don't use any high res graphics stuff - gaming limited to Solitaire
type games but mostly used for work purposes.

I have installed the latest intrepid debs as per 1 above posted by
Bryce. Will let you know whether that solves the problem.

[Bug 312645] [NEW] amd64 8.10 live cd hangs at initramfs in ash terminal

2008-12-30 Thread jbdavid
Public bug reported:

Intrepid Ibex 8.10 intel 64bit (amd64 is a bit misleading since Many
distros use x86_64 ) but whatever..

the casper.log file complains that its unable to find a live file system..
but isn't it supposed to use some of the 2G ram for this ?

Guess I can try the 32bit distro?

I also observe the same issue on my Thinkpad X40. The Intel driver
version is 2.5.1 with mesa3d 7.2 and xorg 7.4. This is not on an Ubuntu
system, which I think would indicate that the issue is not distribution
specific, but rather indicates a bug in the driver.

[Bug 312399] Re: dns packets malformed

2008-12-30 Thread Robbie Matthews
I've been able to duplicate the exact symptoms on another laptop running
Ubuntu 8.10

The above traces were produced on an HP Pavillion dv9000 (running a 64 bit
kernel).
Got exactly the same result on a Dell Inspiron 6000 (running a 32 bit kernel).

I also set up a second nameserver on the same lan, and got exactly the
same results. The problem definitely appears related to nameservers
running on the same local network... internet nameservers seem
unaffected.

[Bug 312634] [NEW] Intrepid Ibex Live CD nv driver doesn't recognize nVidia GeForce 7100/nForce 630i combo chip

2008-12-30 Thread jbdavid
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nv

On booting the live cd, the machine goes thru the boot process then hangs at a
blank screen.
(btw so does fedora 10)
on fedora this completed to the point where one of my other monitors (alt-F7
for example) had a text login screen..
and startx complained that it couldn't find a video card..
--
I've gotten the F9 to work using the nvidia drivers..
But it would be really nice if the nv driver, (which should already support the
7100 graphics capability) would recognize this chip as such..

on that system lspci -nnvv reports

[Bug 312632] [NEW] wish : no compulsory extension

2008-12-30 Thread boblinux
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

Well, I am sorry, this is a wish, not a bug : (even if to me this is a
"problem", as stated in the Help menu entry, needing to be reported) do
you have a specific entry for wishes ? For the moment I will describe it
here :

this is my first eog usage : when I saved my first image, eog REQUIRED
an extension. Why the hell ? on Unix, extensions do not exist. The file
type is recognized through the first bytes in the file (file command,
magic files) why do you regress to this windowish usage ? I was feeling
as if I was using some windowish program !!! please come back to a more
natural Unix usage and please DROP this compulsory extension usage !
this usage should be OPTIONAL.

Best regards

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow

2008-12-30 Thread Anton Veretenenko
Tested transfer rates from partition to partition on 2.6.27-7-generic kernel.
GUI copy starts at 10 Mb/s and then goes down to 6-7 Mb/s and stay.
dd from console is a bit faster, starts at 40+ Mb/s and slowly goes down to 13
Mb/s at the end with 14 Gb file.
The first Gb of data transfers pretty fast with dd.

$ dd if=test.file of=/media/disk/test.file bs=8M
1716+1 records in
1716+1 records out
14396870774 bytes (14 GB) copied, 1087.35 s, 13.2 MB/s
$ uname -r
2.6.27-7-generic

The same as on 2.6.27-11-generic kernel.

[Bug 90261] Re: Volume Control plugin can't be added to xfce4-panel

Same results on an upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10 this evening. Quite annoying and
mystifying. I am not using any of the aforementioned problem themes.
Theme: Xfce-4.2
Icons: Tango
WM Style: Smallscreen

Terminal output when adding volume control applet:
The program 'xfce4-mixer-plugin' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied)'.
  (Details: serial 210 error_code 10 request_code 33 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 271986] Re: [intrepid] screen brightness resets to 100% on reboot

2008-12-30 Thread Grzegorz Galezowski
Rocko, I've reinvestigated the case. Seems like I mistakenly reset the
computer without setting manually brightness down before the reboot (I
made a reboot twice) and I though that the brightness reset was done at
the GRUB stage, while in reality it was reset during previous boot.
Seems like, the first appearance of Ubuntu logo and boot progress bar
seems to reset the brightness for the first time. When I turn it down,
it gets reset again at logon screen.

Sorry for causing any confusion.

2008-12-30 Thread zosX
Yeah I meant Wubi. Try deleting them in windows since it sees all the
partitions and can probably manipulate them without issue. I'm guessing that
it was a windows install on that disk anyways to begin with. I've never seen
a partition table that cfdisk couldn't mangle back together so all I can
wish you really is luck. Hope you have a big external you can make images to
just in case. =)

[Bug 277868] Re: Computer crashes with acx wireless network card

2008-12-30 Thread carlivar
I also confirm this locks up the Intrepid Final LiveCD. Not pretty for
new users. I finally figured out I could get it to boot by removing the
wireless card.

There is a dev/beta version of the acx 100/111 project with WPA support.

Info is here:

http://acx100.sourceforge.net/wiki/Mac80211

Note that some versions of opensuse have packages for this:

http://software.opensuse.org/search?baseproject=openSUSE%3A10.3&p=1&q
=acx-mac80211

I think the proper Ubuntu fix should be to switch to the mac80211 branch
of the acx100/111 driver project. This has WPA support.

I'll post this on bug 279287, which is essentially the same (they should
probably be duped/merged).

2008-12-30 Thread alejaaandro
sorry guys, bad news... it was probably wrong getting too excited and
posting without testing it longer..

i changed my router back to "b and g" to check if that was what fixed it and 10
min later i got a panic..
so that leaves me with either luck or the 801.11g being the problem.. i ll
report back after some time so i can be sure next time..

i didn't seem to find any log messages concerning the problem...

2008-12-30 Thread BrianS
If you could tell me how to delete it, I would be more than willing to.
The only thing on the hard drive that I do not want to lose is the
recovery partition. As for the others, I have nothing on them that I
want to keep that badly, and the recovery makes it easy for reinstalling
windows. If you are talking about wubi, I would rather just not deal
with windows except for when I need it for using visual studio for

[Bug 118605] Re: [fglrx] freezes upon Logout or Switch user [patch]

2008-12-30 Thread flaccid
@Robert Bernecky

1, Complaining to AMD/ATI tends to do nothing but frustrate people due to the
lack of any response on their part
2. ATI *did* release open specification for its video driver, or at least the
parts they could or would due to licensing and other IP gripes. I guess it
enabled better development of the open-source Xorg driver, but has only
relinquished their responsibility with fglrx.
3. fglrx does not support XrandR so dual head needs to be done via Xinerama or
similar eg. http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/X.Org/Dual_Monitors/ATI
4. switch user and dual display should work Ok under the open-source "ati" or
"radeon" driver.
5. In this case you can't blame Linux, but you can blame AMD for lack of
support and maintainence of the driver and Ubuntu for its lack of action - Its
still not proven which one is exactly at fault and why; but it do looks like
the ATI driver is doing something non-standard

Unfortunately none of this gets us closer to fixing this bug.

[Bug 276445] Re: Madwifi (atheros) driver malfunction induces a system freeze

2008-12-30 Thread alejaaandro
cheers everybody.. i have good news...

after setting up everything with the new modem, i haven't had a kernel
panic the whole day (some serious traffic has been going on like p2p
more than 500 kBs, media streaming etc).. i sure hope it's not just
luck..

i did 2 things..

1) changed my wireless router to "802.11b only" instead of "b and g"...
i 'm not sure that this is what made it work 'cause i think i had
already tried that before.. strange thing though: iwconfig gives me

ath0 IEEE 802.11g

but in case you cant' do that,
2) the second thing i tried is enabling the ath9k driver module.. apparently in
8.10 it's already in there (at least that's what i think) so just do

sudo modprobe ath9k

and then

lsmod |grep ath

and check it's enabled.. notice that you'll have to do that again if you
restart, but if it actually works you can just add it as a startup
command in  system->preferences->sessions

i'd love to hear that it worked for you too

[Bug 118605] Re: [fglrx] freezes upon Logout or Switch user [patch]

2008-12-30 Thread Robert Bernecky
I don't particularly care about graphics performance, but definitely DO want
(1) switch-user to work properly (which, at present, crashes my system), and
(2) dual-head support to work properly.

So, I may not need the apparently useless drivers from AMD/ATI, if they are the
root
of the problem, IF I can get the above features to work properly without fglrx.

Someone claimed that someone from ATI/AMD said that "nobody uses switch-user,
so we don't have to fix it". This statement is rumor, so I don't want to beat
up on
ATI/AMD (perhaps), but let me assure you that the need to run concurrent users
with different permissions is very critical to my work. If NVIDIA can support
the above two requirements, I would switch to them in an instant, IFF
they work. My past experience with NVIDIA does not give me hope here.

\begin{rant}
If ATI/AMD would just publish their device (GPU) specifications, we could
do the open-source thing and life would be good. At present, I have NO
good suppliers of GPUs to go to. This is as bad as the mainframe world
of the 1970s, when IBM refused to publish their I/O channel specifications,
in the hope of keeping their monopoly. Perhaps someone should sue
ATI/AMD and NVIDIA to get them to publish their interface specifications.
\end{rant}

BTW, these problems, from what I've seen, may not be specific to ATI/AMD or
NVIDIA, because it seems to appear with both GPUs. If so, my apologies to
the appropriate vendor(s). If not, will you people please get off your
butt and fix things?

Thanks. Your Unsatisfied Linux Customer.

something might help. I don't think anything will work for you without
changes to the table somehow. Unallocated space doesn't just suddenly appear
or your table became suddenly corrupt. :P You can always recreate the FAT32
partition at the end for the media you might need to make the volume label
the same, but I doubt the size matters as long as it is FAT32..have you
thought about installing ubuntu on your windows partiton and boot selected
with windows? :)

[Bug 297385] Re: iwl3945 sometimes fails to resume after suspend

2008-12-30 Thread Martin Albisetti
I am getting exactly the same in Intrepid as well.
It used to be more random, now it's more like 9/10 times I resume, the wireless
doesn't work until I reboot.
I'm on a Dell XPS M1330 with intel gfx and Ubuntu preinstalled

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: linux-meta => linux
