Could you also attach the output of 'xrandr --verbose' when you're seeing the problem? That will indicate if the laptop display really did get turned off. Frequently these wacky resolution issues occur due to some output being turned on and affecting the resolution available. Once the v4l2 stuff settled down other video programs (cheese, ekiga, skype) began working again, but empathy never caught up. I ran STREAM_ENGINE_PERSIST to get telepathy-stream-engine debug output, and here's the error message: ** (telepathy-stream-engine:5966): DEBUG: bus_async_handler: got error from v4l2src1: Device '/dev/video0' cannot capture at 352x288: v4l2src_calls.c(1298): gst_v4l2src_set_capture (): /GstPipeline:pipeline0/GstGConfVideoSrc:gconfvideosrc0/GstBin:bin2/GstV4l2Src:v4l2src1: Tried to capture at 352x288, but device returned size 320x240 ( 13), destroying video pipeline ** (telepathy-stream-engine:5966): DEBUG: Closing all video streams libv4l2: error converting / decoding frame data: v4l-convert: error destination buffer too small Note that it tried to capture in CIF but go the nearby VGA mode... as if some player was confused about which resolution to request or which was requested. This bug is very similar to their reported bug at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18901 . There Oliver says it's either a problem with gstreamer or the kernel driver. Lovely. I ran cheese with its verbose logging and after it got on its feet it showed the following line in terminal: v4l2src name=video_source device=/dev/video0 ! capsfilter name=capsfilter caps=video/x-raw-rgb,width=640,height=480,framerate=30/1;video/x-raw-yuv,width=640,height=480,framerate=30/1 ! identity So cheese seems to properly detect available camera modes and requests one explicitly? I typed this line into gstreamer-properties as a custom video source and empathy video began working fine. With so many players, from empathy to stream-engine to gstreamer to driver, I have no idea where the actual fault is. It looks like some autodetect code is failing to choose an available resolution so I would guess gstreamer. Anyway, webcam: Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0ac8:303b Z-Star Microelectronics Corp. [Bug 307858] Re: [i945] TV out stopped working in jaunty (okay in intrepid)
Interesting... Interestingly your system has one of the LPL brand LVDS display panels which is quirked in xserver. However I don't think the quirk is what is causing your issue (could be contributing to it though, not sure). I also notice that there is an excessive amount of output in the log file repeating the note about the quirk. Perhaps that could be better surpressed. Anyway, could you try following the directions on this page for enabling your TV, and let us know if it worked? https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/SVideo Also, for the Xorg.0.log posted above, was that with the TV connected? -- [i945] TV out stopped working in jaunty (okay in intrepid) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/307858 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution to ubuntu. To disable usplash for a single boot, you can follow these steps : 1.Press Esc during Grub boot delay to access the boot menu. 2.Select your actual Ubuntu boot line and press "e" to edit it. 3.Select the "kernel" line and press "e" to edit it. 4.At the end of the line, remove "splash" and "quiet" and press "enter". 5.Type "b" to boot the custom boot line. Users who encounter this problem face a long and frustrating process of trying to fix Xorg's inability to properly detect the video modes their hardware can support. This is an option that should never have been removed and should remain a part of the capplet in all future versions in the event Xorg fails to properly detect video settings. [Bug 306356] Re: apt-setup/security_host is ignored
Colin, I don't think the testcase in the description is quite correct. I used the netboot image from http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists /hardy- proposed/main/installer-i386/20070308ubuntu40.7/images/netboot/mini.iso with an apt-setup/security_host option that pointed to an non-available ip address. There's no mention of security.ubuntu.com in the resultant /var/log/installer/syslog; however, the security archive information was successfully pulled from: base-installer: Get:2 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy-security Release.gpg [189B] base-installer: Get:4 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy-security Release [58.5kB] base-installer: Get:7 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy-security/main Packages [114kB] base-installer: Get:8 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy-security/restricted Packages [7487B] which is what I would expect would happen if $MIRROR is used instead of $SECMIRROR, based on the code snippet above. I do note that later on apt-setup fails to download the hardy-security repo from the non- reachable ip address, and (I believe, but need to reverify) that /etc/apt/sources.list was set up correctly to point to the alternate security host (which confuses me based on the code snippet above). Using the same netboot image, with the same apt-setup/security_host option plus the addition apt-set/proposed=true argument, those downloads fail with: base-installer: Err http://192.168.1.210 hardy-security Release.gpg base-installer: Could not connect to 192.168.1.210:3142 (192.168.1.210). - connect (111 Connection refused) base-installer: W: base-installer: Failed to fetch http://192.168.1.210:3142/ubuntu/dists/hardy-security/Release.gpg Could not connect to 192.168.1.210:3142 (192.168.1.210). - connect (111 Connection refused) base-installer: base-installer: W: base-installer: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. base-installer: base-installer: W: base-installer: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems base-installer: (In both instances there were non-relevant lines interspersed that I removed, but I'll attach the syslog from both runs.) Hi there :) Thank you for taking the time to help make Ubuntu better. In order to make clear some of the info listed and determine the package(s) causing the problems in your bug report would you answer the following: 1. Is this the first time you have installed the wine package on this same computer? 2. What wine package did you install? What repo did you install the wine package from? 3. Did you loose the desktop icons for all fixed and removable drives? 4. Have you attempted to uninstall the wine package to see if the problem is reversed? 5. [Bug 308387] Re: [Jaunty] trying to overwrite `/usr/include/drm/drm_sarea.h', which is also in package libdrm-dev
Aww... xserver-xorg-video-intel does need drm_i915_flip_t to be defined. It refers to it in "src/i830_dri.c" line 1162, and that struct is supposed to be defined in /usr/include/drm/i915_drm.h, but the latest linux- libc-dev (version 2.6.28-4.10) does not have that yet... In libdrm-2.4.1 (and newer), that symbol is defined in shared- core/i915_drm.h I just updated to latest linux-libc-dev in jaunty, but it does not have that symbol. [Bug 316991] [NEW] gnome-sound-properties isn't available

[Bug 280173] Re: Recompile ubuntu kernel
Rather belated response, but I just ran into this bug today while trying to patch wifi for aircrack. I don't know why this is, but a good solution is to specify the arch with "make-kpkg --arch i386 clean", for example. Just specify any arch name in the source/arch directory and you're good (though you'll want to pick the arch your machine runs on). -- Recompile ubuntu kernel https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/280173 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 316959] Re: Music folder appears twice in Rhythmbox
This seems to be due to rhythmbox adding the users music folder to the bookmarks when opening the file chooser. If the line gtk_file_chooser_add_shortcut_folder (GTK_FILE_CHOOSER (dialog), rb_music_dir (), NULL); is removed from widgets/rb-dialog.c, the problem goes away. If the Music bookmark isn't already set, it is placed in the file chooser window and appers only once. I don't really know if there should be a check to see if the folder already exists, and I don't know if it should be done by rhythmbox or gtk+. I think this is more of an issue with gtk than rhythmbox, as any application adding a bookmark which already exists would cause the same problem. -- Music folder appears twice in Rhythmbox https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/316959 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 316452] Re: [jaunty] last update broke some libraries (libnss3-1d, libnspr4-0d)
I had the same problem that firefox no longer worked after upgrade. (at least in my case) it was because /usr/lib/libnss3.so.0d (from libnss3-0d) was a dangling symlink to /usr/lib/libnss3.so.1d. After i saw that there is a package libnss3-1d, i installed that and firefox worked again.. so the real problem was that libnss3-1d was needed but no other package depended on it. -- [jaunty] last update broke some libraries (libnss3-1d, libnspr4-0d) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/316452 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 316990] [NEW] kaffeine dvd playback fails
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kaffeine I have a Dell Inspiron B130 with Kubuntu 8.04 (all packages up-to-date). It has libdvdcss2 (from mediabuntu), libdvdread3 and libdvdnav4. My wife has a new Dell Inspiron 13 with a fresh install of Kubuntu 8.04.1 and libdvdcss2, etc installed. The former plays DVDs fine, but in the latter I get the 'libdvdcss is not installed' message. The former has a read-only DVD drive, the latter a DVD-RW, if that is relevant. I have tried changing the dvd.device xine engine parameter from /dev/dvd to /dev/scd0 (which it is a symlink to). I have tried region setting to region 1. Originally both machines had no region setting (and the one it has always worked in still has no region set). I do not think it is actually a decryption issue, since the stderr shows the CSS keys being extracted, and they are written to ~/.dvdcss/. There is also a message about "demux_wavpack: (open_wv_file:127) open_wv_file: non-seekable inputs aren't supported yet", but it is not that either, since that appears also in the machine where it works. There are no other log messages before the dvd css message pops up. What version of Ubuntu is this on?
