No - you don't. It's helpful, certainly not necessary. Because of ALSA
and hardware mixing and the mess that I'm sure Dan would be able to
opine forever about, in many cases only one application can use the
soundcard at once. In desktop Ubuntu, this is often PulseAudio, or
JACK, or MuseScore: clearly these three things compete.

Because Pulse is started first, the wrapper scripts for JACK and
MuseScore check to see if it is running, and then disable it: this is
why programs like Rhythmbox appear to stop working. If MuseScore
notices JACK is running, it uses that.

A further complication arises because MuseScore, naturally, tries to
open the "default" card. In some situations in Ubuntu, this can be a
virtual pointer to the PulseAudio software. If Pulse is suspended
(because MuseScore's start-up has noticed it running), then the
default device won't open and MuseScore will assume there is no sound
output support, and disable synthesis. (This line in output is
symptomatic of this problem: "Alsa_driver: the interface doesn't
support mmap-based access").

Of course, if you have an ALSA-registered hardware/software synth (eg
emu10k1, fluidsynth, timidity, etc), MuseScore can also use ALSA MIDI
commands for output.

JACK is helpful, but is often a pain to set up and use. As a result, I
do not recommend it for most users, especially casual MuseScore users,
who likely are not in need of its advanced features or
configurability. ALSA MIDI is another option, but the UI for that is
non-intuitive, and there are few common hardware synthesizers.

In the last case, MuseScore also supports using the PortAudio library
for output. As you can see when using Audacity, that does not directly
support PulseAudio. I'm slowly writing a back-end for this case[1],
but my time has many pressures on it, and so "slowly" means
less-than-Debian-paced.

I hope this has been helpful.

---
splashy (0.3.13-3ubuntu1) jaunty; urgency=low

  * Resync with Debian unstable (LP: #313523).
  * debian/patches/02_ubuntu_toolchain.diff: address hardened features
provided by Ubuntu toolchain, fix FTBFS.

splashy (0.3.13-3) unstable; urgency=low

  * Add 01_fix_splashy_fails_at_boot_bug505270.diff patch.
It introduces a delay to avoid splashy failure on some machines.
Thanks to Tim Richardson and Matthijs Kooijman. (Closes: #505270)

splashy (0.3.13-1) unstable; urgency=low

  [ Luis Mondesi ]
  * New upstream release:
- Fix KDM doesn't display login screen when splashy is enabled.
  (Closes: #465729)
- Wait for all gdm servers to exit. Splashy tries chvt 8 before gdm has
finished, stalls shutdown. Thanks to Tim Richardson. (Closes: #504389)
- When using fonts, try the full path it looks like we were never using
the font supplied by the theme. this fixes this problem by building
a path to the full file. (Closes: #505270)
- Set SPL_PRG before using it. It fixes a bug with mysqld when upgrading
mysql-server-5.0, restarting the service halts the update process with
an error: SPL_PRG unbound variable. (Closes: # 509025)
  * Remove 01_fix_themes_path patch. Merged upstream.
  * debian/control:
- Add conficts against desktop-base (<< 5.0.2). (Closes: #506057)
  * debian/splashy.preinst:
- Move /etc/splashy/themes to /etc/splashy/themes.old . (Closes: #503566)
We introduced a preinst stage that will move /etc/splashy/themes out of
the way to /etc/splashy/themes.old. The user would need to dig into this
directory to manually copy any customized themes
into /usr/share/splashy/themes. Sorry about this but this seems to be
the best way to avoid pissing too many people off (or loosing data).
Note that if Splashy is removed/purged, this themes.old directory will
  be removed also.
  * debian/splashy.prerm:
- Remove it. deprecated.

helps.

I have reported a bug (#312735) for the same problem.
I wonder if this problem only exists on Thinkpads?

[Bug 172361] Re: Alt+tab shows titlebar on switcher

2009-01-17 Thread nandhp
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 159950 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/159950

I am currently experiencing this problem on Intrepid.

I tried excluding class "switcher-window" from the decorator, which does
prevent the titlebar from appearing, but it also removes the entire
window border as well, so it's not a very pretty workaround.

[Bug 312735] Re: X server hangs at boot time when running on battery power

2009-01-17 Thread Lars Gjesse Kjellberg
I found out that this problem is the same as reported in the forum:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6301778

However, the suggested solution (sudo aticonfig --auto-powerstates=off)
didn't work for me. Instead, the following:

sudo aticonfig --acpi-services=off

does the trick.
Guess it is really an FGLRX issue.

[Bug 179042] Re: Videos tear and "blink" when enabling compiz [AMD Feature #7647] [EPR#257833]

2009-01-17 Thread Zombywuf
Another bump for this issue in 8.04. Under compiz *all* rendering is
corrupted, video, OpenGL and regular compiz effects. It's as if the
screen is split along the diagonal from the top left to bottom right and
only one half of the screen on either side of this diagonal updates on
any given painting of the screen. This causes a diagonal tear when, for
example, dragging windows. For OpenGL and video the effect is more
pronounced due the side not being rendered being blanked rather, this
results in a terrible flicker.

[Bug 318189] [NEW] Add support for SPSS & PSPP formats

2009-01-17 Thread bojo42
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: shared-mime-info

SPSS is a proprietary program to analyze statistical data, mostly used
by social sciences. Since version 16.0 this app finally gained linux
support. On the free side we have a clone called PSPP that aims for
compatibility and is in universe.

Sadly the formats used by those apps are not correctly detected by
Ubuntu, means there seems to be no mime types for them. So you can work
with SPSS or PSPP, but you can't associate the produced file types to
them. Therefore we should fix that for a overall better support for
those files important to many social scientists. This would ease
migration from Windoze for this kind of people.

The files are:
.sav - native data format
.por - portable data format
.sps - syntax format
.spv - output format (new introduced with SPSS 16.0, the old format was .spo)

** Affects: shared-mime-info (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 88746] Re: ehci_hcd module causes I/O errors in USB 2.0 devices

2009-01-17 Thread Bill Smith
Another affected system:
- Ubuntu 8.10 with current patches
- ATI "740G" motherboard (SB700 chipset, I've attached my lspci printout)

Disabling 'ehci' seems to workaround the problem, and it also seems to
work properly using the Ubuntu 8.04.1 LiveCD, at least for a quick test.

[Bug 306363] Re: Brightness hotkeys problem on Dell Inspiron 2200

2009-01-17 Thread Marc_dm
strongly related problem : from Bug #281651

and retested on my configuration :
while a menu from a gnome desktop bar is open, using the brightness hotkey will
:
- correctly modify the brightness setting
- but NOT show the notification and the progress bar

when closing the described menu afterwards, the brightness notification
bar shows up, and i end up in the same locked situation as described 2
posts up. --> for this reason i mark the Bug #281651 also as duplicate
of this one

The problem seems mainly to come from the way gnome-power-manager
handles this notification, and that it hangs on it afterwards..

[Bug 318180] Re: gnubik fails to launch; prints "cannot get suitable visual" to terminal and exits

2009-01-17 Thread martin
The error is printed by g_error from glarea-gtk.c line 165:

  int attribs[]={GDK_GL_RGBA,

 GDK_GL_GREEN_SIZE, 1,

So it seems that gdk_gl_config_new() returns NULL. The documentation for this

[Bug 318185] [NEW] Missing some ipod nano icons

2009-01-17 Thread davidcaste
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hipo

Hi!

When I start Hipo with my blue iPod Nano connected, I have an error
dialog the following message: "Icon 'multimedia-player-ipod-nano-blue'
not present in theme". I've attached a screenshot with the dialog. Then,
when Hipo main screen appear, it should be a GtkTree under "Music
Library", but that area is empty too.

I've tried to symlink /usr/share/icons/hicolor/16x16/apps/multimedia-
player-ipod-nano-white.png into /usr/share/icons/hicolor/16x16/apps
/multimedia-player-ipod-nano-blue.png, but that error message is still
appearing.

I think all ipod nano icons are missed because the only ones included
are multimedia-player-ipod-nano-black.png and multimedia-player-ipod-
nano-white.png. I've looked into the tarball in hipo's homepage, and
there are the same than in Intrepid deb, so I think they're missed there
too.

Thank you very much!

[Bug 318182] [NEW] NTFS on USB drive misdetected as ReiserFS

2009-01-17 Thread Björn Nilsson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

Ubuntu 8.10
hal 0.5.11-4ubuntu4

When I attach my USB disk formatted as NTFS I get the errors included in
screenshot. Seems like HAL thinks the filesystem on the drive is
ReiserFS when in fact it is NTFS.

sudo fdisk -l /dev/sdc gives:
Disk /dev/sdc: 320,0 GB, 320072933376 byte
255 huvuden, 63 sektorer/spår, 38913 cylindrar
Enheter = cylindrar av 16065 · 512 = 8225280 byte
Diskidentifierare: 0xc1842206

Enhet Start BörjanSlut BlockId System
/dev/sdc1 1 38913 3125686417 HPFS/NTFS

So the filesystem is in fact NTFS. I also use the disk in Windows
frequently.

I should also say that _I think_ the disk had ReiserFS on it at one
point years ago.

I found the following temporary solution to the problem:

Add to file:
/etc/hal/fdi/policy/preferences.fdi

The following:

  ntfs
  filesystem
  3.1
  locale=

Then the drive is mounted, icon is added on desktop etc as expected.

[Bug 318184] [NEW] xrandr not detecting S-Video connection

2009-01-17 Thread jcdutton
Public bug reported:

Output of xrandr

VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

S-video disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

The S-video should say connected, but it does not.
The exact same S-video cables and TV AV-in setting works in windows, so the
cables are OK.
The S-video cable is connected before booting the Linux machine.
I expect that until xrandr detects the S-video as connected, I have no chance

[Bug 112684] Re: F-Spot deletes temporary image files too early when sending mails

2009-01-17 Thread swulf
This bug is still in issue in Ubuntu 8.10 (Ibex) and with F-Spot (f-spot
0.5.0.3). I am not opening another bug report as it is basically the
same issue as reported in this one.

The temporary folder F-Spot creates (in /tmp in my case) disappears
automatically after a short while. When Thunderbird comes to look for it
to send the mail, it fails as it no longer exists. This makes it
practically impossible to send an image as email via Thunderbird using
this F-Spot feature.

Further, using the Configuration Editor 2.24.1 for gconf shows that
there is no '/apps/f-spot/export/email/delete_timeout_seconds' key
present by default. Configuration Editor shows
'/apps/f-spot/export/email' contains only the keys 'auto_rotate' and
'size'. Should this key be created manually?

[Bug 306363] Re: Brightness hotkeys problem on Dell Inspiron 2200

2009-01-17 Thread Marc_dm
Also affected on : Inspiron 9400

Problems :
The "pop-up" notification stays forever on top of all windows till ctrl-alt-FX
trick
The gnome interface is partly locked while the notification stays up : by this
i mean
- most mouse interaction with the gnome panels is blocked (no starting
paplication through buttons, highlight of menus but no display or acess to menu
context)
- keyboard is mainly locked : ctrl-alt-FX still works, but only reset the
display instead of going to the selected terminal

Whereas following functions work
- The brightness setting through Fn+Up or Fn+Down works (brightness setup +
progress bar displaying actual state)
- the mouse is free
- mouse interaction with desktop icons OK
- mouse interaction with already launched applications is OK

problem may be linked to gnome-power-manager as the brightness setting
is part of it --> bug linked

data on my system :
Linux 2.6.27-9-generic #1 SMP Thu Nov 20 21:57:00 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux
gnome-power-manager version : 2.24.0-0ubuntu8.1

[Bug 315267] Re: Awful video tearing+blinking when using any output method except X11 in video players.

2009-01-17 Thread PowerUser
Actually, this problem not seems to depend on exact card model or
something like this (people with at least ATI and Nvidia encounter this
in various Linux distros including Ubuntu, Kubuntu and whatever else).

And actually there is nothing wrong with X server. It is obvious that
usual output method was never intended to draw hi-resolution video so
it's slow and this is "by design". About accelerated video... as far as
I know, there is something like this happens: when composite mode used,
screen updates are no longer synchronized with display frame rate. This
causes no troubles to usual windowing operations but video displayed
through accelerated interfaces (xvideo, opengl, ...) blinks and tears.
Blinking and tearing happens since when composite mode used it happens
that video frames are output without syncing to monitor frame rate.
Hence it happens that frames could be just partially drawn when getting
actually displayed. This surely leads to nasty blinking due to repeated
sequence of partially-drawn frames.

Here goes verbose lspci log (launched under sudo since without it it
lacks some info).

[Bug 315774] Re: libsmbclient-dev missing smbc_urlencode in .a in intrepid

2009-01-17 Thread Oumar Aziz OUATTARA
Quoting the developer commit:
==

[Bug 6022] smbc_urlencode and smbc_urldecode were not exported
- Since the revamp of libsmbclient, there has still been an external
declaration for smbc_urlencode and smbc_urldecode in libsmbclient.h, yet
those functions were renamed and made private. The two choices were to
remove the function names from libsmbclient.h or to make them public
again. The reported requested that they be public. This commit makes it so.

2009-01-17 Thread A. Walton
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 194214] Re: Keys get "stuck" down

2009-01-17 Thread David Oftedal
Ah, I forgot to note here that disabling setup-hotkeys or hotkey-setup
or whatever it was called didn't solve the problem after all. However,
an old mailing list posting from 2003 hints at the keyboard handling in
the kernel 2.6 series being the cause of a remarkably similar problem:

"The answers differ for 2.4 and 2.6. For 2.4 each keypress is a keypress,
and key releases are rather unimportant as long as the key is not a
modifier key. For 2.6 we have synthetic repeat, so a second keypress from
the keyboard is ignored, the key repeats with kernel-defined frequency,
and the repeat is ended by the key release."

[Bug 222982] Re: Project-X wont start, libmawt missing

2009-01-17 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Does this need Sun Java?

Usually installed programs in Ubuntu work. Once you have them in the
programs starter list, they just start, and you would not have to
install any extra software. If you do have to, this would be a bug
(missing dependencies).

The "won't start" bug seems still valid with Ubuntu 8.10 64-Bit.

It's rather a feature. ctrl-j displays the objectives of the current
playing side. Given that there are multiplayer missions around it might
well be that different sides have different objectives. Given that
multiple players can be playing on the same machine with the same client
and thus it makes quite sense that it's done that way.

On the other hand, it can be argued wether it's wanted that the
different sides are able to see the other side's objectives. I've
mentioned it to upstream at least, it's their to decide. If you feel
it's a good idea you might want to drop a message in their gna.org bug
tracker. It's still the same in the 1.5 development branch, just for the
record.

 So long. :)

[Bug 317855] Re: "Shut Down the Computer"-window spawns behind active window

2009-01-17 Thread Jakob Unterwurzacher
Without compiz it doesn't happen. The window spawns in the foreground,
though it sometimes doesn't get the focus.

Blowing aways /apps/metacity , /apps/compiz , /apps/compizconfig at the
same time seems to have solved it. (compiz must be reading some metacity
settings?)

Now that it's "solved" for me i and no one else seems to be affected i
think we can close this.
