[Bug 322962] [NEW] Word processor drops out

2009-01-29 Thread markling
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

The word processor is dropping out without warning, losing work if not
saved.

It is happening pretty much every time a try and work with a particular
document. It includes words pasted from a website with but one or two
embedded 1.5x3inch photos. It appears that the document might stay open
long enough for me to delete the photos, but its touch and go - I can
get there first sometimes, but this is no way to work. The document is
only a few pages long. Aside from the photos there is nothing else but
text and a light peppering of active html links.

I don't know if this is a related problem, but I have had the whole
computer freezing up regularly since Friday as well. The freezes
happened while using openoffice, though other applications were running
(Skype, Thunderbird, Firefox). The only way to solve that one is to pull
the plug.

I keep losing my work. Someone on the Ubuntu forums said, well you
shouldn't have upgraded to Ibex on your work machine. Well, if someone
had told me before hand... ;-)

Anyways. Great software. I recommend it to other people. But I can't
keep losing my work.

cheers

markling.

2009-01-29 Thread Brian Murray
The error message that you are seeing:

rsync: getaddrinfo: cdimage.ubuntu.com 873: Name or service not known

means that your system cannot find cdimage.ubuntu.com. This is
certainly an issue with your connectivity. You could also check and see
if you can access http://cdimage.ubuntu.com.

Yes, I'm pretty sure the PPA version isn't new enough. If you would like to

[Bug 322959] [NEW] Gnome desktop hangs with Ubuntu 9.04 on Mac Mini in regular graphics mode

2009-01-29 Thread vlee
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I am unable to use the Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha4 Live CD on the Mac Mini in
regular graphics mode. Ubuntu will hang when it tries to load the Gnome
desktop. The Ubuntu 9.04 background wallpaper is shown but there are no
top or bottom menu bars. The keyboard is not responsive. (Clt-Alt-F1
does nothing.) The mouse pointer can be moved around but right-click or
left-click does nothing.

The Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha4 Live CD will work fine if I use safe graphics
mode. Also, the Ubuntu 8.10 Live CD will also work in both regular and
safe graphics mode on the Mac Mini.

The Mac Mini has an Intel GMA 950 graphics chip, so this looks like an
issue with the Intel i945 driver.

[Bug 322952] [NEW] several reports will not allow submitting parameters

2009-01-29 Thread Eli Morris-Heft
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nagios3

Ubuntu Release: 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex)
Package Version: 3.0.2-1ubuntu1.1

This occurs on certain reports, namely Trends, Notifications, History, and
Histogram.
To reproduce:
1. Select a host or service with a character that requires URL-encoding (like a
space).
2. Select one of the affected reports (i.e. 'View Trends for the Service')
3. Click "Update". (Whether or not the parameters actually change is
irrelevant.)
4. Nagios will report that you do not have the correct permissions to view that
report.

The reason Nagios reports this is because the service name or host name
is being double url-encoded. For example, 'Check Load' becomes
'Check+Load' which turns into 'Check%2BLoad' on submit. Nagios doesn't
have a service called 'Check+Load', only one called 'Check Load', so it
fails.

[Bug 322954] [NEW] Need to be able to controll some devices from GUI - power management and device recovery

2009-01-29 Thread janl
Public bug reported:

* Case 1:
Problem description: Some wifi drivers/chipsets get confused after a while and
will fall off the network and then fail to get on again with the normal network
manager probings. A root shell and modprobe -rv ipw2200; modprobe ipw2200

References: Windows provides a "repair device" choice in the tray
network icon which appears to remove and reinstall the driver

Suggested fix: A "repair network device" choice should be available
through network manager

* Case 2:
Problem description: RFKILL switch kills wifi driver permanently.

Suggested fix: See above for workaround. A setting somewhere to
automatically reinstall the wifi driver after unkill occurs would be
nice.

* Case 3:
Problem description: USB devices keeps Laptops from reaching low power states
for any significant time. My current laptop has a builtin 3G device and a
builtin bluetooth device. Both are on a USB bus. According to powertop these
rank among the top wake-up-causers on the system.

Suggested fix 1: powertop suggests "suspending usb". Not quite sure
what this entails but unloading the USB stack seems one likely solution.
A desktop device manager to do this would be nice.

Suggested fix 2: Powertop further suggests unloading the bluetooth and
3G device USB drivers. This normally requires root access and knowledge
of the driver names. This is a less drastic way to realize almost the
same goal as in fix1. A desktop widget is needed.

* Case 4:
... Once the desktop bus interface to manipulate the usb stack and wifi drivers
is realized it's not all that strange to supply a "rfkill" software switch in
the network manager applet that lets us do rfkill on the wifi and bluetooth but
keep the 3G device going for example.

Regards,
  Nicolai

[Bug 238733] Re: Right-click inconveniences

2009-01-29 Thread André Pirard
** Description changed:

+ Recycled due to
+ https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+2.0/+bug/238733/comments/12
+
Under Windows (and Wine), a right-click occurs on ButtonRelease.
Under Gnome, a right-click occurs on ButtonPress.
Furthermore, the subsequent Release acts like a left-click.

  Here are several consequences:

  a) I the mouse slips towards a context menu between Press and Release, an
unwanted menu entry is executed.
Windows is a less surprising platform to practice mouse skill.

  b) If a context menu is misplaced due to program error, the result is the
same without slipping.
For example, this is presently the case of Firefox and Thunderbird.
If a right-click is made too close to the window's right border for a left
corner of the menu to appear at the cursor, the menu will appear flush to the
window's right border with the top or bottom edge aligned on the cursor. But
the menu is too low, so that when the cursor is near the window's bottom, it is
inside the menu.
In consequence, right-clicking in that bottom right area has the following
consequences :
  - Firefox switches page direction,
  - Thunderbird deletes the message you're reading (bug #107819)
These FF/TB bugs are not bugs under Windows.

  c) There are probably more subtle consequences.
Ubuntu bug #187313 might well not be a bug if right-click occurred on
ButtonRelease.

Additionally, it seems to me that L/R-click on ButtonRelease leads to simpler
and hence stronger logic.
To determine if a click is long, it seems easier to measure the time between
Press and Release when Release occurs than to start a timer when Press occurs
and wait until it times out and gets a long click or is aborted by Release and
gets a short click that occurs on ButtonRelease anyway.
I leave the multiple clicks case difference as an exercise.

Although different usage implies different problems, what is true for
right clicks is true for left clicks.

[Bug 322949] [NEW] initrd.img is build during kernel removal

2009-01-29 Thread psl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Ubuntu 8.04.2, i386 but I think this "bug" is in Ubuntu for long time
and is not 8.04.2 specific.

Description:
Ramdisk initrd.img file is created during kernel removal. This is a nonsense
form my point of view, why to create something that will be deleted in next
second. Creation of ramdisk can take longer time at slower computer. Can be
this step skipped during kernel removal?

There is another problem with initrd disk build during kernel removal.
When /boot is at separate small partition, it is possible to run out of
space in /boot during kernel update. The same risk is here for kernel
removal when initrd file is build; I use separate /boot disk and I know
it happens...

Hmm, thinking about this makes it pretty clear to me know. It really
must be firefox + flash. My firefox on x86 recently also acquired
about 1.5GB of RAM with the X server running at more than 2GB. Killing
the firefox instance also released quite a lot of RAM from the X
server. But more importantly: As reported earlier, I don't have the
problem on my amd64 desktop at work. And guess what! I don't have a
flash plugin running for my firefox there.

So please debugger folks. Test along these lines, and I am almost
certain you will find the real cause of this.

[Bug 322939] [NEW] Please consider swapping portaudio and portaudio19 source packages between main and universe.

2009-01-29 Thread Luke Yelavich
Public bug reported:

 affects ubuntu/portaudio

 affects ubuntu/portaudio19

 subscribe ubuntu-archive

I wish to request that once more we swap portaudio and portaudio19 between main
and universe. Portaudio which is version 18 is currently in main, and
portaudio19 is in universe. The only package that
uses portaudio in main is espeak, which can be compiled against portaudio19.

I recently patched portaudio19 to work better with pulseaudio, and speech with
accessibility tools in GNOME via espeak -> portaudio19 -> pulseaudio is a lot
better than the current setup,
espeak -> portaudio18 -> oss -> pulseaudio. Espeak itself can be built against
pulseaudio, however that code is not known to be mature, and thats not useful
for anyone not wanting to use pulseaudio.

Portaudio19 has been in main before, so a main inclusion report shouldn't be
necessary. I can dig up the report if requested. I am also able to upload a new
espeak revision to build it against
portaudio19 once it is in main.

Thanks

[Bug 322001] Re: Intrepid netboot hangs on Acer Aspire One

2009-01-29 Thread Geza Kovacs
Likely unfixable; disabling vesamenu.c32 globally would mean that all
users would be left with a command-line syslinux interface, which would
greatly reduce usability, especially for those using ISOs which include
numerous menu options. Since I'm not aware of any way to detect hardware
which has a broken framebuffer unable to display syslinux, while
manually blacklisting each individual computer unable to display a
graphical syslinux menu is unfeasible, only perhaps an improvement in
syslinux for supporting semi-functional hardware can potentailly fix
this.

Running oem-config and oem-config-prepare are two entirely different tools.
I never referred to oem-config-prepare. That's part of what's done in the
factory recovery image process. When a user first receives a machine, the
first thing that should be ran however, is the oem-config tool.

Re: [Bug 238733] Re: Right-click inconveniences

2009-01-29 Thread André Pirard
Since Ubuntu 8.10, the problem described above occurs even without any
slipping of the mouse. Right-clicking on the Gnome desktop intrepidly
creates a folder if you keep the button down for some short time. Or it
may well open a Background Change dialog, depending on where you click.
Or it may start a Properties dialog when you're in a folder. Or what
next? ...

It is a bug. Right-click isn't supposed to punish the unskilful one by
causing random, and potentially nasty surprises (if menus are not
designed with this bug in mind).
Enough frustration is expressed for similar Bug #187313 already.

[Bug 191783] Re: window title changes cause window decorator to render poorly

2009-01-29 Thread Datadog
It appears that nVidia driver 180.22 fixes this problem. Here's one of
the bullet-points from their changelog for this driver version:

Fixed a regression that could result in window decoration corruption
when running Compiz using Geforce 6 and 7 series GPUs.

They should probably change that "could" to a "would", as it seemed that
it was pretty much a guarantee that it would corrupt window decorations.
Anyhow, good to see that it appears to finally be fixed. Hopefully they
won't re-introduce the regression again in a future release, and if they
do, hopefully it won't take so many versions before it's finally fixed
again.

[Bug 322946] [NEW] USB touchscreen is disabled when switching virtual console back to X

2009-01-29 Thread Julien Plissonneau Duquene
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev

Also reported upstream:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19819

Problem located in evdev.c / EvdevCacheCompare()

Symptom: USB touchscreen no longer works when switching from X to another
virtual console and then back to X. Sample log message:
(EE) Elo TouchSystems, Inc. Elo TouchSystems 2700 IntelliTouch(r) USB
Touchmonitor Interface: Device has changed - disabling.
(WW) Elo TouchSystems, Inc. Elo TouchSystems 2700 IntelliTouch(r) USB
Touchmonitor Interface: Release failed (Invalid argument)

Cause: EvdevCacheCompare fails because it also compares all values of
input_absinfo structure, which include the last tapped position of the
touchscreen (.value field). This is never updated in the cache, and anyway it
could change anytime if the screen is touched while away from the X virtual
console.

Solution: Exclude .value from comparison. One-liner patch attached.

** Affects: xserver-xorg-input-evdev (Ubuntu)

 Status: New

[Bug 322935] [NEW] Flash plugin fails to display

2009-01-29 Thread jhaiduce
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

Flash animations occasionally fail to display in Firefox. Normally Flash
works when the browser is first opened and later on Flash stops working.
Flash items are replaced by a grey box. When I re-start Firefox the
Flash plugin works again for a time.

I found that if I switch to one of the open source Flash plugins and
then switch back, the problem occurs immediately, but even if I do

[Bug 276603] Re: crashed while listening to a mp3 podcast

2009-01-29 Thread petski
:) Happy to help :)

We're currently in the phase that a new package of rhythmbox is about to
be distributed to everyone running Intrepid. The only thing is that the
archive admins want to be sure that this new package works as expected.
If you guys are positive about the new package, everybody can have their
Rhythmbox back in just a couple of days :). The new package is slightly
different than mine, but the results should be that same.

So, martin, jona, markofealing, duanedesign and everyone else who is
reading this: I would really appreciate it if you would (re-)test the
"new" package, which is currently in the "-proposed" pocket. So, please:

- sudo rm -f /etc/apt/sources.list.d/LP276603.list
- Follow instruction on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed
- sudo apt-get update
- sudo apt-get upgrade
- Make sure that at the end the command "dpkg-query -l rhythmbox" will give
"0.11.6svn20081008-0ubuntu4.3" (_NOT_ "0.11.6svn20081008-0ubuntu4.3~ppa1").
- Let us know if rhythmbox works as expected

Best regards

[Bug 322932] [NEW] Emacs shortcuts do not appear in menu until another login

2009-01-29 Thread Joe Snikeris
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: emacs

After installing the emacs metapackage, the shortcuts do not appear in
Applications->Accessories until you log out and login again.

They do appear in 'Edit Menus' immediately though.

The fix probably involves refreshing the Main Menu as one of the last
steps of the install process.

[Bug 275929] Re: Compiz doesn't allow me to move windows beyond the upper limit of the screen

2009-01-29 Thread Tom Wright
I would not call this purely a wishlist as it makes many dialogues
including many from the installer unusable at lower screen resolutions.
If you try using Ubuntu at 1024x600 or lower (it is apparent on the
eeepc 1000h which has the largest screens of the netbook category of
devices), many high profile programs and other windows are not usable
without changing this setting - a situation which is not acceptable and
should be considered as a bug as it directly impedes people from using
the software in a standard and necessary manor. Such a key UI/behaviour
bug which prevents the use of software on an increasing popular range of
devices is just as important as a more obvious bug, especially when it
only needs the change of one gconf key to fix it and make sure that
compiz does this as well as metacity (where this behaviour has already
been used as long as I can remember, so it is very unlikely it would
break anything) in managing this.

My printer is on another computer and I print to it using IPP. Both
systems are ubuntu systems running cups servers. When the computer with
