[Bug 323496] [NEW] An unfriendly error message is shown when failing to open a DVD.

2009-01-31 Thread John Steele Scott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

Current jaunty:
gvfs 1.0.2-0ubuntu1
nautilus 1:2.24.1-0ubuntu1

To reproduce:
Insert a DVD into the DVD drive.
>From the menu at the top of the desktop screen, select "Places->CD-RW/DVD±RW
>Drive".

The following error dialog is shown:

Unable to scan CD-RW/DVD±RW Drive for media changes
Cannot invoke CheckForMedia on HAL: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied:
Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.24"
(uid=1000 pid=4145 comm="/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfs-hal-volume-monitor ")
interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Storage.Removable" member="CheckForMedia"
error name="(unset)" requested_reply=0 destination="org.freedesktop.Hal" (uid=0
pid=3432 comm="/usr/sbin/hald "))

I tried a different disk, and it worked okay. So possibly the problem
here is with the disk (maybe because it is a video DVD, not a data DVD).
But the error message is not very friendly.

Is this problem perhaps limited to certain FireWire controllers?
You can check with "lspci" for the controller type.

Did the same hardware work with older kernels?

[Bug 323497] [NEW] Please sync giplet 0.2.0-1 from Debian unstable (main)

2009-01-31 Thread Salvatore Bonaccorso
Public bug reported:

Please sync the new upstream version of giplet (currently 0.2.0) into
Ubuntu. Debian unstable has now 0.2.0-1.

giplet (0.1.8-2) was previously synced from Debian unstable.

The changelog between 0.1.8-2 and 0.2.0-1 is the following:

giplet (0.2.0-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream release
  * Drop 01_fix_about.dpatch patch. Upstream does not list anymore packager
names in about dialog window.
  * debian/control: Add intltool to Build-Depends-Indep.
  * debian/docs: Re-add now README file since it now contains also a note
from current upstream author Lyman Li.
  * Remove README.source from source package since we currently are not applying
modification to the upstream source. Drop dpatch from Build-Depends.

[Bug 283612] Re: ohci1394 driver loop at boot time (Iso Xmit # Context died)

2009-01-31 Thread Stefan Richter
The problem is that the ohci1394 driver gets only garbage when it
performs MMIO accesses. The core kernel is unable to set up the memory-
mapped IO correctly, I suppose due to an issue with the BIOS.

Neither "pci=noacpi" nor suppressing to leave some of the applicable drivers
off (by blacklisting them) is a good permanent solution. What you could try:
  - Look for a BIOS update.
  - Try the newest kernel that you can get your hand on. Is it possible to
install Jaunty test kernel packages on Intrepid?
  - Report the problem together with data about your kernel and your mainboard
to linux-a...@vger.kernel.org.

[Bug 323506] [NEW] Incorrect DVB scan file for au-Perth - Channel 7

2009-01-31 Thread Matt Austin
Public bug reported:

I was unable to pick up Channel 7 when using the scan utility.

I changed the following in /usr/share/doc/dvb-utils/examples/scan/dvb-t
/au-Perth

From:
# Seven Network
T 17750 7MHz 2/3 NONE QAM64 8k 1/16 NONE

To:
# Seven Network
T 17750 7MHz 3/4 NONE QAM64 8k 1/16 NONE

I changed the value "2/3" to "3/4" on a whim, as it was the value used
for the other commercial networks - and scan is now picking up the
channel 7 multiplex. However, I am not exactly sure what I changed, or
why it worked - so would appreciate someone who knows what they are
doing confirming that this is an acceptable solution!

[Bug 298579] Re: dvgrab, Error: no camera exists

2009-01-31 Thread Stefan Richter
lhz: Yours is a different bug. Please open a new one and include the
output from "dmesg", including the portions where ohci1394 and ieee1394
initialize the controller and from when the camcorder was plugged in/
switched on.

Back to Carl's bug:
Discussion without definite result went on at
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=492048AD.4010201%40personnelware.com&forum_name=kino-dev
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=4921B92A.8050101%40personnelware.com&forum_name=kino-dev
and possibly some other threads.

It's a hardware problem which can very certainly /not/ be fixed in
software.

2009-01-31 Thread Stefan Richter

Not at all. You go to the upstream developer contacts.

The OpenCV project has its forum, perhaps there you can find somebody
who would be interested in a port from the libdc1394 v1 API to the v2
API.

If specific advice is needed in such an API port, the libdc1394-devel
mailinglist will be a perfect place to ask.

[Bug 312554] Re: Regression: bug: int 14 cr2... booting 2.6.28 in jaunty fails on ASUS P5q and maybe others

2009-01-31 Thread Felix Geyer
Before kernel 2.6.27.2 came out I submitted that patch to Ubuntu.
As soon as Ubuntu updated to 2.6.27.2 the patch has been dropped because it has
been applied upstream since that version.

Then in 2.6.28-1.1 the upstream patch has been reverted:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/jaunty-changes/2008-November/001218.html
The changelog says:
  [ Upstream Kernel Changes ]
  * Revert "x86, early_ioremap: fix fencepost error"

Which is just wrong as this patch has never been reverted upstream.
So please drop that reverse patch as it surely causes the same problems as is
Intrepid.

This seems to be a packaging mistake.
The /dev/raw1394 file should neither be created nor deleted by a package script.

[Bug 306822] Re: I cannot remove ttf-mathematica package

2009-01-31 Thread Mateosan
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 299427 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/299427

I can confirm this bug on Easy Peasy and Intrepid 8.10. Also on both
i386 and 64bit architecture.

One solution can be found here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=990622

I would like to humbly suggest removing this package from the
repositories as it's no longer need to run Mathematica as of version
6.0.1

[Bug 317781] Re: Ext4 data loss

2009-01-31 Thread Christian Roessner
Just a question: Would data=journal in /etc/fstab be a workaround until
this bug is fixed?

(Unfortunatlly I can not set this option in fstab for the root-
partition, because initramfs does not support that feature!), but you
may try this with your home and what-else partitions, if you do have
them.

Data=journal deactivates delaloc. It should put data and metadata into
the journal, thereof I hope that recently opened files should not have 0
bytes size. I do not put further comments here from my side. It´s just
an idea.

[Bug 311771] Re: WD My Book doesn't properly unmount on PC shutdown

2009-01-31 Thread Stefan Richter
The Western Digital FireWire disks have some non-standard power savings
features which WD apparently tested only with some Windows PCs without
care for compliance to the SCSI specs or IEEE 1394 specs.

Are there any messages in the system log from when the system tries to
unmount the disk, e.g. SCSI errors? (I am not a Ubuntu user myself,
hence don't know into which log file you should look. It is typically
/var/log/messages.)

What happens if you manually unmount the disk after it went into
standby? Does anything interesting appear in the output of "dmesg"
then?

[Bug 303363] Re: package linux-image-2.6.27-9-generic 2.6.27-9.19 failed to install/upgrade: le sous-processus post-installation script a retourn? une erreur de sortie d'?tat 3

2009-01-31 Thread Xavier Robin
Same problem here.
I had previously manually modified my menu.lst to add booting option to ubuntu
8.04. However, the previous kernel update (2.6.27-9-generic) ran smoothly with
these modifications.
When I saw there was problem I fist backed up my menu.lst. I attach it here as
*menu.lst-bak-2009-01-31.xavier*.

Then I used the "merge 3 files" options, then something crashed (don't
know exactly what) and I clicked on the notification toolbar button. In
the update progress window I got errors saying that the kernel wasn't
configured. I will attach output in *apt.log*.

Then in synaptic I reinstalled linux-image-generic and it worked fine.
Log attached as *apt2.log*

Finally I looked in my menu.lst and it was still unmodified. So I
duplicated the 8 lines for "2.6.27-9-generic" and changed it to
"2.6.27-11-generic". Now I'm going to try to reboot and see if it is
working.

[Bug 278471] Re: Screen flickers or blanks every 10 s with KDE4

2009-01-31 Thread David Roberts
I can confirm that killing krunner fixes this, disabling KRandR does
not. Also, the bug only seems to occur while the mouse is moving (screen
blinks every ~3 seconds). In general it only blinks occasionally if the
mouse is motionless, even if the keyboard is being used. After adding a
script to ~/.kde/Autostart/ that executes `pkill krunner`, it now only
seems to blink a few times while KDE is starting up.

Does anyone know what it is about krunner that causes this?

Also, this bug seems to be mainly about the KRandR issue. Should a
separate bug be filed for the krunner issue?

[Bug 186167] Re: dmesg: Driver 'sd' needs updating - please use bus_type methods

2009-01-31 Thread combuster
Hm, it looks like that with the latest 2.6.27-11-27 data on the cd after
burning is not corrupted but the hal gives me the same message:

Unable to mount "Label"

DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply.
Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply,
the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout
expired, or the network connection was broken.

Ok, what is important is that the data is finally valid. I still have to
wait some 60sec or more to access the disk but the data on it is not
corrupted. At least things are getting better after a year of waiting...

Restart was successful. Kernel is correctly installed and it seems my
modifications to menu.lst were ok (uname -r gives "2.6.27-11-generic")

Some notes that might be interesting:
- Like the reporter, I'm using ubuntu 8.10 in french language. I don't know if
it is relevant or only a coincidence.
- Output logs are in french. Sorry for non-ascii characters that are completely
messed up by launchpad. If you need a translation of some output, please ask.
- Unlike the reporter, I'm using a x86_64 (64bit) kernel on an amd.
- I removed old kernel 2.6.27-7 (linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic &
linux-headers-2.6.27-7). The process went successfully without error.
- Attaching my current working version of menu.lst in case it can help!

[Bug 323522] Re: Rhytmbox has no Audio Output

2009-01-31 Thread Michele Mangili
Hello Gaetano!

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and trying to make
Ubuntu better.

Can you hear other sounds from your machine, for instance the startup
sound? Can you use another music player for reproducing a file?

Please include the information requested from the "Reporting Sound Bugs"
section of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems as separate
attachments.

Thanks in advance

[Bug 323528] [NEW] mktime bug back with gcc 4.3.2

2009-01-31 Thread stecklum
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: autoconf

running configure on the archfs-0.5.4 tree showed that autoconf hangs
for quite a while when checking for mktime. The result is

checking for working mktime... no

This happens on a 64bit fully updated 8.10 system, i.e. with the
autoconf 2.61-7ubuntu1 package and gcc (Ubuntu 4.3.2-1ubuntu12).
Updating autoconf with the Debian 2.63-2 package does not solve the
problem.

[Bug 134401] Re: add support for fujitsu tablet input device

2009-01-31 Thread Ahmad Syukri
Glad to hear you managed to compile it.
First and foremost, I need to confirm: what model are you using? This driver is
for the Fujitsu P-series touchscreen, and the models known to use it are:
Fujitsu Lifebook P1510, P1510D, P1610, Fujitsu FMV-BIBLO LOOX P70R until P70U/V
(I guess), and LG C1 Dual Express.
If your model is indeed among the ones listed above, I suggest you try the
setserial method, as shown in conan.de page or the japanese blog:

sudo apt-get install setserial
setserial /dev/ttyS0 port 0x0220 irq 4 autoconfig

Starting from P1620, and also later Japanese models, the touchscreen is
USB-based, according to the following post:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=714424
If you have such model, you may have to use evtouch driver instead.

[Bug 323531] [NEW] Sony MRW620-U1 Multi-Card Reader: no SD card support (USB and XD work)

2009-01-31 Thread Robert C. Roper
Public bug reported:

I bought an internal Multi-Card reader that plugs into the motherboard
USB headers. On the front panel, it includes a USB port, SM/xD slot,
SD/MMC/RS-MMC slot, CF/Microdrive slot, and a MemoryStick slot.

*Unfortunately, the SD slot doesn't respond when I plug either a 16GB
class 6, 8 GB class 4, or 1GB class 2 SD card into it.

The USB port works when I plug a thumbdrive into it. The SM/xD slot works when
I plug a 1GB xD card into it.
I have not tested the CF and Memorystick slots.

Hey people.

Read the thread, please. I'm almost certain that your problem was
discussed here.

Run driconf and In "Synchronization with vertical refresh" select to
never synchronize.

FPS should go up. It went for me. But I'm still 50% below performance
of 2.4 driver.
