[Bug 193970] Re: iwl3945 | iwl4965: Wireless can't be activated after disabling kill switch

2009-02-05 Thread Telorn
Waiting for Jaunty Alpha 5. Now I have 9.04 with all updates, when it
starts it enables WLAN, but if I disable it using WLAN button
(killswitch, but on my laptop it is button with no positioning), it
still can't be reactivated with WLAN button. So, next, I think, that it
isn't correct behavior to always enable WLAN at startup, cause it costs
battery power.

[Bug 326059] [NEW] gcalctool can't divide correctly in Jaunty

2009-02-05 Thread ThomasNovin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcalctool

Simple divides doesn't work correctly in Jaunty.

For example:

/10 = 111,1
Result with gcalctool:

3590/12 = 299
Result with gcalctool: 29916667

However! If you take 3590/12 and then multiply 29916667 with 12 you
get 3590 again :)

[Bug 326057] [NEW] a gnome-terminal window sometimes cannot be activated.

2009-02-05 Thread purluno
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
-> About Ubuntu.

Description:Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)
Release:9.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
packagename' or by checking in Synaptic.

gnome-terminal version: 2.25.5-0ubuntu2

3) What you expected to happen

Switching an active window to a gnome-terminal window by using alt+tab.

4) What happened instead

When I run a gnome-terminal window and a firefox window in **same
workspace** and using firefox, the gnome-terminal window entry in the
gnome panel window list sometimes is blinking(which is usually occurs
when a window is created in another workspace), therefore alt+tab or
mouse-clicking the gnome panel window list entry doesn't work until I
switch workspace to another and come back.

thank you for your interest.

yes i am using compiz. the files requested are attached.

i find that with nvidia 173 this occurs but not with the earlier
drivers. however compiz does not work and 3d effects are not available.
previous to the upgrade 173 appeared to be functioning.

Re: [Bug 192508] Re: mouse keys turns on randomly

2009-02-05 Thread John
Good idea to use xev to determine what X is seeing.

I have two machines with full-size US keyboards, including the keypad. Both
are running Ubuntu 8.10 and Gnome 2.24 with the latest packs installed.
Both have vino enabled and I am using vinagre to connect to the remote
server.

I used the command "xev | grep KeyPress -A 2 -B 2" to filter out
keypresses. I pressed the keypad 4, keypad 6, and NumLock key sequential on
both computers. The results are below, one line for each key and if
multiple KeyPress events were generated for a key, they are seperated by a
semicolon ";". Only keys on the local computer are actually being pressed.

Local computer only: NumLock ON
4: 0xffb4, KP_4
6: 0xffb6, KP_6
NL: 0xff7f, Num_Lock

Local computer only: NumLock OFF
4: 0xff96, KP_Left
6: 0xff98, KP_Right
NL: 0xff7f, Num_Lock

Local: Numlock ON, Remote: NumLock ON
4: 0xff7f, Num_Lock; 0xff96, KP_Left; 0xff7f, Num_Lock
6: 0xff7f, Num_Lock; 0xff98, KP_Right; 0xff7f, Num_Lock
NL:

Local: Numlock ON, Remote: NumLock OFF
4: 0xff96, KP_Left
6: 0xff98, KP_Right
NL:

Local: Numlock OFF, Remote: NumLock ON
4: 0xff7f, Num_Lock; 0xff96, KP_Left; 0xff7f, Num_Lock
6: 0xff7f, Num_Lock; 0xff98, KP_Right; 0xff7f, Num_Lock
NL:

Local: Numlock OFF, Remote: NumLock OFF
4: 0xff96, KP_Left
6: 0xff98, KP_Right
NL:

So from this it looks like the Local NumLock state is being ignored and that
some part of the VNC is trying very hard to ensure that the Remote X server
is seeing keypresses as if NumLock were off.

Incidentally, this is the same setup that was seeing Mouse Keys being
enabled when using VNC, though I did not experience it when I did these
test.

[Bug 223238] Re: Extremely slow Ajax/Javascript/CSS performance in Firefox 3 using non-free nvidia-glx-new

2009-02-05 Thread talent03
I have this problem as well with nvidia-glx-new 177.80. The command
shown in this thread does not change a thing. I don't have any add-ons.
I notice the sluggishness quite a bit when scrolling in slashdot.org
articles. It definitely is affected with javascript. I have noticed
this on other computers without nvidia. It is definitely slower than on
windows, even compared to windows in a VM. I hope this is fixed, because
I get so annoyed I just run opera many times.

The issues is discussed and fixed at (although I'm yet able to confirm this

[Bug 271922] Re: Default ACL not applied on files created through CIFS filesystem (mount.cifs)

2009-02-05 Thread Steve Langasek
Hi Michael,

In the case of Ubuntu 8.10, I think this is principally an oversight.
Note, however, that I've also tested this behavior with the jaunty
kernel which does have CIFS_POSIX_XATTR set, and it makes no difference
to this bug because of the atomicity issue I've outlined.

[Bug 286119] Re: firefox 3.0.3 crashes (no SIG) on most pages w images: 8.10beta AMD64

2009-02-05 Thread Kunjan Shah
Either this bug is not related to samba or their are multiple unrelated
bugs. On my amd64 box with kubuntu (all latest updates applied) firefox
reliably crashes on this page:

http://code.google.com/android/reference/adb.html
Click on "Issuing ADB commands" crashes firefox and the following is printed on
the console.

$ firefox
QPixmap: Invalid pixmap parameters
The program 'firefox' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 38913 error_code 11 request_code 53 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

As you can see it crashes in Qt/X11. And it seems to me there is an
issue with the widget theme you are using in kde4? I am trying to find a

fix went in for 12.5.2, but newest upstream should be taken.

[Bug 325616] Re: Brother HL-730 prints infinite junk

2009-02-05 Thread Bill
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: cups

I've had this problem for three Ubuntu releases. When I try to print
using Ubuntu 8.04 and a Brother HL-730 Plus printer the output often
  looks like this:

  %-123...@pjl
   @PJL ENTER LANGUAGE

This kind of stuff gets printed out forever on every page until I cancel
the job and power down the printer. Occasionally, when I restart the
printer it will start to work ok as long as I print the test page first,
but usually when I turn the printer back on it goes back to printing
  garbage.

I use a USB cable to connect the printer. I installed the printer with
the default driver using the simple steps in the Ubuntu printing
utility. I've found others with similar problems and have reinstalled
everything as instructed, but the problem persists. It looks to me like
the printer command is being printed instead of the content of what is
supposed to be printed. What is going on? What should I do?

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs.

http://my-it-dump.blogspot.com/2009/02/fixing-gpg-errors-nopubkey-in-

[Bug 326048] [NEW] KDE 4.2 wireless speed vs. Gnome

2009-02-05 Thread Jmadero
Public bug reported:

Hi All,

Same exact driver. Kubuntu vs. Ubuntu. Same computer, same position on
my desk. In Kubuntu about half the time I connect with 2 bars (out of
the 4 in the kde network manager) the other half I get full bars (no
moving computer) while in Gnome I always get 85-90% full 4 bars.
Internet runs slower with the weaker connection. Very strange since both
use the same broadcom driver (native driver) and the systems are both
buntu's.

Thanks all

I can post screenshots if it'll help, didn't think it would though

[Bug 326046] [NEW] External monitor not working when connected through Targus ExpressCard docking station

2009-02-05 Thread googatrix
Public bug reported:

Laptop: HP Pavilion dv2699ee
Docking station: Targus ExpressCard Notebook Docking Station ACP60EU
Release: Ubuntu 8.10 32 bit with all updates applied, kernel 2.6.27-11-generic
Nvidia driver: 177.82

Steps to reproduce:
1) Plug in external monitor to the ExpressCard VGA output.
2) Plug in the docking station to laptop via the ExpressCard port.
3) Turn on laptop.

Expected output:
The external monitor connected to the docking station should be recognized and
able to configure the output via nvidia-settings.

Actual output:
Video output does not work through the Targus ExpressCard docking station. In
nvidia-settings and the Gnome screen resolution applet, the external monitor is
not shown. (It is shown when connected directly to the VGA output on the laptop
rather than the docking station). Note that the docking station itself seems to
be recognized since mouse and keyboard work when plugged in to the USB ports on
the docking station.

[Bug 326045] [NEW] Youtube videos freeze in Firefox while running Java Applications.

2009-02-05 Thread elimin8
Public bug reported:

Please pardon my informal and probably very lacking report of this bug,
im rather new to the linux community. Recently I have installed Ubuntu
on my machine (I have prior experience with DSL,
Knoppix,Slax,Opensuse,Fedora and a few other distributions. I found the
install quite easy and the add/remove applciation utility to be
exceptional. To date I only have minor issues. I tried to install the 64
bit version but due to the lack of sun support for 64 bit ubuntu I opted
to return to 32 bit.

The issue:

I run various Java based applications, Wurm online to name a specific
one. (a java based mmorpg)

While running this application I have noticed I am unable to run Youtube
or Hulu based videos for longer than perhaps 5 seconds time, at which
point the stop playing, there is no indication of a crash but the video
is freezeing. The fault is duplicateable.

I have the most recent Sun package installed, I am using the 177 Nvidia
driver package for video processing (I have no dedicated video card,
just the onboard video processor.) The tower is a Compaq 1.9gb amd64 x2
Duel core processor 4000+.

The release is : Ubuntu 8.10 release 8.10
(Had difficulties aquiring the Java Version and Flash Version but i believe
java is 1.5.0, flash was installed from the website.) I used the ubuntu
restricted package.

If I can be of further help on what information to report please notify
me. And if you would mind, if the reporting requires specific commands
please include them also.

No. I am not going to do this.

I think it is really quite unfair and misleading for you to ask for a
valgrind log, only to have me go to the pain and trouble to try to use
pidgin while it was painfully slow with valgrind and then have you
discard it and it's obvious indications of memory leaks only to ask me
to play "stab in the dark" games with configuration options.

In the future, if you are not prepared to take the output from a
debugging tool and run with it, please don't ask for it.

Yes. I am annoyed.

[Bug 326043] [NEW] Font size optimisation misbehaving

2009-02-05 Thread MountainX
Public bug reported:

I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04 on my T61p thinkpad. Afterwards the screen
fonts were all huge, making the appearance of Ubuntu (all menus and all
applications, including text in documents) very ugly and not user
friendly.

I found that the problem was related to a setting of 146 dots per inch
resolution in Appearance > Fonts > Details > Resolution. Changing this
back to 96 dpi resolved the issue.

I see that "Font size optimisation" is advertised as a new feature of
9.04. "Font dot-per-inch settings are now optimised based on the
monitor’s capabilities, rather than defaulting to 96dpi. "

Apparently this new feature isn't working as intended.

My hardware:
ThinkPad T61p 6459CTO Core2Due, 15.4 WUXGA TFT, NVIDIA FX570M, 4GB Geil RAM,
120 GB HDD

(I have no idea which package this is related to.)

So I'm imagining this:

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND
14543 brian 20 0 626m 48m 24m S0 1.7 2:56.62 pidgin

And I'm imagining this:

==25684== LEAK SUMMARY:
==25684==definitely lost: 489,237 bytes in 4,540 blocks.
==25684==indirectly lost: 1,095,670 bytes in 29,414 blocks.
==25684== possibly lost: 121,379 bytes in 203 blocks.

It doesn't really matter that your installation is not having memory
leaks (i.e. that you cannot reproduce) because I have given you the
valgrind log that a) proves there are memory leaks and b) details where
they are.

What was the point of asking for a valgrind log if you are not prepared
to use the results from it to debug the problem?

b.

Uhm. That valgrind log is from up-to-date Intrepid. That valgrind log
is only from a short period of time and you can clearly see the leaks it
produced. Pidgin crashes on me every 2-3 days as it ends up getting
ENOMEM at 1GB of VM due to memory leaks.

> Have you tried moving your .purple directory to
> something else and letting pidgin setup from scratch again?

No. But why do we need to do that. You now have a valgrind log in hand
that shows you exactly where the memory is leaking.

What was the point of collecting the valgrind log if we are going to go
through one of these "stab-in-the-dark" debugging processes where we try
enabling/disabling everything one-by-one until we find a culprit?

Are you kidding me? Do you know how painful it was to try to be
productive with pidgin while valgriding it? I use IRC constantly, all
day long to communicate with co-workers. Having it running pitifully
slow while being run under valgrind was painful. I take offence at your
characterization of it being "little" effort.

[Bug 326019] Re: package update-manager 1:0.87.30 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: SystemError in cache.commit(): E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

2009-02-05 Thread linas
Root cause of failed dist-upgrade was that the file

/var/lib/dpkg/info/libedataserver1.2-4.postrm

contained garbage and was corrupted. Clearing out this file, together
with a bunch of 'apt-get -f install' and 'dpkg --configure -a'
eventually got things back on track and got the upgrade completed.

It was highly non-obvious to discover that the above was the problem, it
would be nice if apt/dpkg could have somehow automatically handled this,
or zeroed in on this as the root cause.

[Bug 325815] Re: Java applet works in windows, not in linux.

2009-02-05 Thread Michael Jones
Hi Florian,

Thanks for being patient with me.

I agree with you that being standards compliant is not a bug in
itself, and that standards compliance is generally a good thing.
Honestly, I'm not taking issue with the applet not running. The page was
written with incorrect code, so according to RFC, its behaviour was
justified.

The issue that I'm having, and the reason why I reported a bug in
the first place, is that behaviour that works flawlessly in both
internet explorer and firefox (I just tested this again to confirm),
using a cross platform language (java) in a cross platform webbrowser
(firefox), in windows, works not at all in Ubuntu Linux. I'm not saying
that this specific example any one is to blame really. What I am saying
is that complicated behaviour (Loading a java applet is complicated, any
way you want to look at it) that works fine in one operating system that
claims to support the behaviour, does not work at all in another
environment that also claims to support the behaviour.

I cant tell you if its an issue with Firefox, java, or something
even unrelated. I am a software person, but I'm pretending to be a dumb
user on this. I have familiarity in Windows, and Ubuntu, something that
I know works in Windows, doesn't work in Ubuntu... even though
operations that I consider to be effectively identical (note the second
working applet I linked) does work perfectly in Linux and Windows both.

I specifically submitted this bug report to the Ubuntu distribution
of launchpad because I personally experienced this problem while using
Ubuntu. I can't say if other students who were using a linux
distribution other than Ubuntu encountered this same problem, though I
know there are students who use other Distributions. The fact is that no
one from another distribution said anything, thus I assume that the
problem exists only in Ubuntu for now. Thats not to say that it does not
exist outside Ubuntu, just that I cannot confirm or refute that, so I
won't make the assumption.

Honestly, my basic argument is that from a "dumb" user standpoint, a
webpage that works on Windows, does not work on Linux, even though all
of the necessary software is installed. Firefox is supported by Ubuntu,
and is included by default as the default GDM browser. The java browser
plugin is installable via add and remove programs.

Somewhere in this situation is a bug. Is it a bug in java for
windows? maybe. is it a bug in firefox for windows? maybe. Java for
Ubuntu? maybe, Firefox for Ubuntu? maybe. I don't know... I don't know
enough about the various components to find the actual problem. Thats
why I submitted the ticket. I saw a problem, and don't know how to fix
it.

Thanks again for working through this with me, I appreciate it a lot.

-Mike

[Bug 326029] [NEW] gvfs-gphoto2 mount 4 devices when plugin one camera

2009-02-05 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

In Jaunty alpha4, when I plug my Canon PowerShot A700 Camera (a PTP
camera mounted by gphoto2 gvfs backend), the camera appear 3 times (and
sometime even 4 times) in nautilus left panel like if I had 3 cameras at
the same time.

Each of these 3 devices in nautilus bring to a different folder inside
the camera as described here :

Camera 1 : gphoto2://[usb:002,015]/
Camera 2 : gphoto2://[usb:002,015]/store_8001
Camera 3 : gphoto2://[usb:002,015]/store_00010001

When I unplug the camera, two of the cameras in nautilus does not
disappears until I reboot the computer. If I don't insert a SD card in
the camera, gphoto2://[usb:002,015]/store_8001 still appears and
give a error message when trying to access it (normal since the card
isn't even available).

[Bug 326030] [NEW] Cancelling a 'move files' operation leaves the file system inconsistent

2009-02-05 Thread David Given
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

If you try to move a number of files to another volume it removes source
files after each one is copied. This means that if you cancel the
operation in the middle you end up with your files split arbitrarily
between the source and the destination.

This is unintuitive and unlike how other systems work; the normal
approach is to copy all the files, and then only remove the source files
once you know that the copy is successful. If cancelled before the copy
is complete, then the copied files are removed. This allows the
operation to be treated as transactional --- it will either succeed
completely or fail with no side effects.

Yes, I have just lost data due to this, using the following workflow:

- attempt to move files to another volume.
- copy fails midway with I/O error.
- reinitialise destination volume.
- retry move.
- notice that it's moving fewer files than I started out with.

If moves are not going to be treated as transactional, then I'd suggest
that instead of removing files unilaterally from the source file system,
they should instead get moved to the Trash, to allow easier cleanup from
what is inherently a riskier procedure.

[Bug 314524] Re: 'gpac depends on libavcodec51, should depend on libavcodec51 | libavcodec-unstripped-51

2009-02-05 Thread Martin Jackson
the last release of gpac fixes this, shouldn't this be marked as a dup
of Bug 289600 and marked "Fix Released"?

[Bug 325076] Re: Please sync mahara 1.0.9-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

2009-02-05 Thread François Marier
Actually, due to LP#326028, I recommend waiting for 1.0.9-2.

I'll fix the broken path include which makes Mahara completely unusable
then the sync can happen and fix all of the security issues as well.

[Bug 296230] Re: Xvfb crashes with Segmentation Fault

2009-02-05 Thread Noah Z
Workaround has been stable for a few hours.
Instead of starting the Xvfb as stated, I added the extension argument -
Xvfb :21324 -fbdir /tmp/xvfb_test -ac -extension GLX &

Hope this helps someone else.
