Martin, I really appreciate your build, but unfortunately it didn't work
for me (Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit + Sansa c240/c250 + Rockbox r21285 + new
bootloader from http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/9955).

I can confirm, though, that installing the libgphoto2,
libgphoto2-port-0, and libmtp from Karmic has fixed this issue for me!

I'm using Ubuntu Jaunty 64bit on my Thinkpad T500, and randomly I have
system freezes. It seems the freezes happen regardless of what I'm doing
(browsing the web while listening to music with rhythmbox). Also at the
beginning, I had freezes with caps lock blinking, for the last freezes
this was not the case. Can't move the mouse, or do anything beside
shutdown the laptop. I noticed that the freezes happened not long after
I began to use the laptop (a matter of minutes) whereas most of the time
I can use the laptop for hours without problem.

I also have a project suffering from this issue. It opens fine in
1.3.5-2 but in 1.3.7-1 it freezes. Unfortunately the data files are over
1 GB so I cannot attach them.

The only workaround that works for me in all cases is to use:

export SDL_AUDIODRIVER="alsa"
export AUDIODEV=hw:0

and then launch every SDL app that needs sound with pasuspender.  Ack.

After upgrading from intrepid my keyfile on my external usbstick is not
found anymore so my partitions are not mounted

During boot i receive now:
early crypto disk 
mount: special device
/dev/sdc does not exist
keyfile not found

In order to boot correctly I had to change in the safe mode /etc/crypttab
from
var /dev/sdb5 /media/flash/var.key luks,tries=1,timeout=10
to
var /dev/sdb5 /media/var.key luks,tries=1,timeout=10 ( where i copied 
temporarily my keyfile )

Interestingly when i boot into my desktop and issue df -h i can see and access 
my usbstick
/dev/sdc   63M   15M   48M  24% /media/flash
so it seems it is only a problem with an early mount of my usbstick

My /etc/fstab
/dev/mapper/var /var ext3 relatime,errors=remount-ro 0 0
/dev/sdc /media/flash vfat uid=0,gid=0,umask=277 0 0

In my /etc/default/cryptdisks I have this line:
CRYPTDISKS_MOUNT="/media/flash"
I also did type update-initramfs -u , but it did not change anything

When the restart failed after the upgrade I still had in the grub list a
intrepid kernel (I dont remember which one) that i tried to boot with.
And the drives where mounted and decrypted correctly although my ati
drivers where not working correctly anymore of course that is a another
story. My point is that I believe my configuration is correct and the
issue seems to be related to my current kernel

I pulled down what I think is the source for Jaunty (pidgin_2.5.5 plus
ubuntu-specific diff patch) and looking at the code, it appears to use
the (later) rewritten/reorganized authentication code (yay!)

If you're seeing the same symptoms, my guess is that maybe it's a
different root cause this time. If you can capture the issues you're
seeing in a new bug against pidgin 2.5.5, maybe that's the best way to
pursue a fix.

I'm afraid I'm unable to help - we stopped using the Jabber (OS X)
server that required the "Force old SSL" switch to be set which
subsequently crashed Pidgin. Using "standard" SSL/TLS on our new server
is working fine for me.

Another good idea is to save this report locally for future
comparisons with the diff command, i keep mine as
alsa-info-date.txt in my /home/user or better yet on a usb stick along
with the script then you could use that with
a live-cd or live-usb of jaunty and run it again to see if you have
anything that changed.
The command would be
diff  alsa-info-date.txt  alsa-info-date1.txt   (where the date1 is
the version to compare with your benchmark) I found
that to get my Acer Aspire One 270 mic working i needed the latest
git, I compiled it then using the speaker icon
and the preferences I selected the input sound sources and it worked.
If you decide to try using the latest driver
review this before compiling it from source :

This update didn't modify anything but udev rules for a controller that
you don't have (the controller is only present on dell hardware).  It's
mearly a coincidence that the update changed the behavior for you.

Also, you're using the unsupported method of connecting/pairing using
hidd.  The real problem here is that we need to get your mouse pairing
using the GUI utility.  So to get started diagnosing that problem, lets
start out with a more recent version.

You can download a karmic alpha 2 image and install it to a USB stick.
Boot off it, and try to pair your mouse.  If that fails still, then
we've got some more steps to start following to figure out what's wrong.

I feel your pain, Jerry :(

It looks like the patch fd.o is queued up to go into Linus's branch
shortly but hasn't made it yet [1].  I'd guess that without any hangups,
it will go into the 2.6.31 release.  Conveniently, that's also the
kernel version targeted for the final Karmic release as well [2].

If you're feeling adventurous and want to compile the kernel yourself,
check out [3].  You would want to use the git source and get the patch
in from there.

I was also able to find (while looking up that patch) a reference to it
in the #ubuntu-x IRC channel [4] (search for
07f4f3e8a24138ca2f3650723d670df25687cd05).  There's a lot of signal in
that log, so it would be a good one to be familiar with.

So I guess the short of it is to wait for the fix to make it in.  To get
a better idea of how the patch is being handled, you should ask on
#ubuntu-x.

to create a boot-able usb stick since my X60s doesn't have a CD drive.

Since no one i paying attention, I was prepared to make a patch myself,
thou my idea was to modifying the way "nv.ids" is generated in
"01_gen_pci_ids.diff".

A the moment the script looks like this:

Same machine, also having temperature issues, running jaunty x86-64.
The reason acpitool doesn't work is that it requires the toshiba_acpi kernel 
module, which does not work for this model, apparently.

Fan control seems to be hit and miss. Sometimes the fan will not spin
faster when it really should be, sometimes it starts spinning fast and
does not slow down again until I suspend and resume the machine. I have
no idea how to manually tell the fan to do something.

lucck filed a duplicate report at bug #291742 where he did some good
debugging that I'd like to share here.

"Afer power up display backlight is always set to 100% light,
independent of brightness settings in previous session. I detected that
problem is in acpi kernel driver video.ko and gnome-power-manager. I use
ubuntu 8.10 with kernel 2.6.27-7-generic on 64-bit platform. This is a
regression bug, because in previous version ubuntu 8.04LTS display
backlight works ok.

Aditional comments:

I detected that acpi/video.ko kernel 2.6.24 driver in ubuntu 8.04 didn't
work and backlight was controlled only by ACPI bios, because
/proc/bus/acpi/video/*/backlights always return that backlight is not
supported. In kernel 2.6.27 driver return correct backlight values:

levels: 100 51 30 37 44 51 58 65 72 79 86 93 100
current: 65

New video driver trying to get current backlight level from ACPI BQI
object but it is optional ACPI function. When ACPI does not support BQI
object driver will set back-light to maximum value. Pls. see code

Currently I workaround this problem by change kernel driver video.ko to
set 50% backlight when BQI object is not found (Pls see patch bellow). I
also changed gnome-power-manager settings by run gconf-editor and set
following configuration values in /apps/gnome-power/manager/backlight by
changing keys values to:

brightness_ac = 50
brightness_battery = 30
brightness_dim_battery = 30

but it is obvious workaround."

I forgot to mention but I had the same problem, I put Samba4 on thinking
that would help but it did not, and I then did a complete removal of all the
samba4 and any other samba I could and then did a reinstall of samba via
synaptic. However this did NOT install the smbclient. I am puzzled by this
as it is part of the samba install..It could have been that samba was
running when I tried to do the synaptic reinstall. If this makes no sense to
anyone then perhaps someone can tell me why I had the " use samba
printers"  showing in the printing GUI with 8.01 then it dissapeared
when I upgraded to 9.04.

So this is dependent upon whether your machine properly implements a
bluetooth RF killswitch.  Does it?  Can you elaborate on the hardware
platform you're operating on (eg Dell XPS 1330) and the chip you are
using?

Can you also provide lshal output so we can see what hardware kill
switches exist?

If there is no killswitch for your hardware, then there is no way to
solve this in bluez.

What I found troubling is that the "nv" driver get loaded even in the absence 
of the id in the nv.ids file.

The expected behaviour when the id is not supported is to load the vesa
driver. I suspect that when the id is manually added, the vesa driver is
loaded (an equally incorrect behavior) which leads to claims that it now
works. We have yet to see hard evidence that the "nv" driver is loaded
and performing adequately. I am only speculating, but one difference
between IGPs and discrete video cards is that they have support in the
kernel for the chipset.

I know this is a side issue, but it may lead to the resolution of this
bug report. Further more, the main design point of a vesa fallback
driver was to avoid a "crashing video" scenario to provide a great "out-
of-the-box" experience. It does not seem to work in the case of the
9100M G and I suspect it does not in the case of other IGPs.

I am for automatic updates for security problems only be default. This
is a sane default, that would suit most users. Of course there are
specific uses (like a slow connection or high fees on downloads already
cited) that would not like such behavior. However, this setting can be
changed from the update-manager easily at install.

As for the pop-up. I still think that the best solution that preserves
the will to clean up the notification area is to use the indicator
applet to queue the update notifications (instead of using the pop-ups,
pop-unders). Something along the lines described by C Cooke in comment
#345 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-
notifier/+bug/332945/comments/345). That idea plus a new icon for the
indicator-applet when critical updates are available (like a red
triangle with a exclamation mark in the middle) would be a very good
start for me. If someone thinks that the user would disregard the
warning icon, maybe use the idea of showing notifications at defined
time intervals (every couple of hours for security updates or every
login for normal updates) should do the trick. If the users wants to
disregards such constants notifications then he/she will do the same
with the pop-up/under.

Oh, and probably the default icon for the indicator applet should change
too, now it is a mail envelope because it is being used only for email
notifications and chat requests, a more neutral icon would be nice (for
example the application icon with a silver circle and the letter i in
the middle).

I am planning to send a message to the ayatana project with this
proposal soon. As someone already said, there is the right place to
discuss this "bug".

I don't believe the feature requested here will happen anytime soon. Photos are 
saved directly from the same stream of the viewfinder, a frame is taken and 
encoded into a jpeg file. To do what the OP suggested we will need to stop the 
pipeline, close the device, reopen it with an higher resolution, take a frame, 
stop the pipeline again and reopen it with the lower resolution.
It will take no less than 3-6 seconds just to shoot a photo. I'd say it's a 
wontfix.

About refresh issues I believe Neil is talking about some issue we had
in the past with gtk double buffering, they should be fixed in git or in
the 2.27.3 release expected in the next few days.

Hi, thanks for the bug report.  So first thing's first, what bluez
daemon version is installed?  Can you make sure you have the latest?

Next, karmic will soon be switching focus to the gnome-bluetooth applet
(rather than bluez-gnome).  Can you install that, and then logout/in and
see if it's any better for you?

If not, then can you attach the latest /var/log/daemon.log with the
trouble pairing?

Installing the package openoffice.org-style-crystal brings back the
icons for OOo. This package has no dependencies, so it should be
installed by default for now, until Oxygen icons will be integrated.
Without the icons, OOo is unusable.

Of course, KIO integration is essential...

I'm suspecting this isn't going to work OOTB currently on karmic, but
using a karmic A2 disk, you should be able to do a test that might work
to switch the modes.

So follow these steps:
1) Bootup a karmic alpha2 disk.  You don't have to install it, just boot up it.
2) Look at the output of lsusb
# lsusb

 a) The column that shows the two 4 digit pairs is what we are looking at.  
Take note of BOTH of the pairs that are there
 for the keyboard and mouse

3) Run this command with those pairs inserted.  The first of 4 digit
pair is the VENDOR.  The second is the PRODUCT:

$ sudo hid2hci --method dell -v VENDOR -p PRODUCT --mode hci

So if I was trying to run the command on my Ricoh device (which wouldn't
do anything), i'd run:

$ sudo hid2hci --method dell -v 05ca -p 18a1 --mode hci

4) To check if that command works, run lsusb again and check for a new
bluetooth radio device. If it exists please post it in this bug and this
can be fixed OOTB for you in a later karmic alpha.

5) If that command doesn't work, try the other pair and repeat step 4.

where did you get instruction about install codecs into Ubuntu? You have messed 
the /etc/apt/source.list file and than apt can't load the configuration. You 
should comment the 54th line (type # as the first character of the line), then  
you should be able to run synaptic again. If there are other malformed lines 
just comment them all.

Every few seconds, when running the latest kernel (2.6.30-9-generic) Linux 
appears to think that there is a floppy that it can't read from. I have 
attached the output of dmesg and I used "ubuntu-bug -p linux" to report this.
When I am typing, however, output of this doesn't occur, however, when I am not 
typing, every 8 seconds, this appears on a tty (not in gnome-terminal, however).
This does not interfere with the command I am typing. For example, if I were to 
be typing "/etc/init.d/g" and I pause right there, the message pops up, and I 
finish with "dm restart" It would run just fine.
The problem also occurs while using a text editor such as nano. The text would 
appear in the lines that are being edited, however, if I move the cursor over 
top of them, they go back to what is actually in the text file.

I am running a Thinkpad T43 with 1 GB RAM, 40 GB HDD, 1.86 GHz Pentium M 
Processor. There is no floppy drive built in.
This bug does not exist in old kernel versions (2.6.24 is the earliest kernel 
version I remember. I first started using Ubuntu at Hardy).

I see exactly the same problem (blank screen every few minutes, no log
output, othrewise works fine) on my integrated Radeon HD 3300 so it
doesn't just affect the listed chipset.

The problem does not occur with the proprietary fglrx driver.

After login all my harddrive's partitions are mounted and displayed on the 
desktop. In nautilus they can be cleanly unmounted. This happens only at first 
login: if I kill gdm from a tty and start it again nothing gets mounted.
The behaviour I expect is the one I get from the second login: only the swap 
partition is accessed.

Steps to reproduce: boot from LiveCD.
LiveCD is Karmic alpha 2 x86_64.
