[Bug 395425] [NEW] Installer silently crashed at the end. Not obvious - installed system works.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubiquity At the end of the installation, I am taken to the live desktop. This strikes me as weird later, but now I simply reboot into a fully working new grub and karmic partition. Much later, I notice that ubiquity, casper, gparted and other packages that should have been removed at the end are on the system. Then, I discover that /var/log/installer doesn't exist. I've just reproduced this for the third time. I'm no longer certain there's a bug, because of two things I missed the first two times. Nonetheless, I decided it was worth entering, as I didn't realize there was a crash, even the second time! Only when I asked why the installer would exit to the live desktop instead of rebooting did it become clear what happened here. The new developments are: - Physical errors on a hard drive. These could have been there the entire time, and somehow caused the crash (the drive has been unused for a while and the graphical installer doesn't mention the errors -- I only noticed because I looked at the console this time). Is it worth doing it again after I replace that drive? - The crash notification. The first two times, I probably rebooted manually before it appeared. This time, I already had a terminal and ubuntu-bug ubiquity open before it appeared. The floating notification only says that some app has crashed (clicking it tells me that it was ubiquity). Is this the only intended notification that the installer crashed? This is the karmic alpha 2 amd64 desktop live installer, with "Install Ubuntu" rather than "Try Ubuntu" chosen at start all three times. I've tried reproducing this in VirtualBox on the same system and failed (the installer finished as it should). [Bug 271606] Re: sed -i option needs clarification in manpage
Many GNU utilities have more detailed info documentation than man pages. The See Also section of the sed man page is very clear about this. info sed Invoking provides more information about the use of the sed options, including -i and that suffix. This information includes substitution for * , and so forth, which is not addressed at all by the suggested statements to "improve" the man page in this bug report. If it is really felt to be necessary to add this information to the man page (as well as the info database, where the information already exists and which is already pointed to by the man page) please do be sure to add correct information to the man page! My instinct is that anyone using sed deeply enough to use the -i[SUFFIX] option will be (or should be) using info sed rather than man sed to read the detailed sed documentation anyway :) -- sed -i option needs clarification in manpage https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/271606 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

When I use "file -s" on a block device (of a partition, of course) that was formated with ext3, its output reads something like this: $ file -s /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdc1: Linux rev 1.0 ext3 filesystem data, UUID=ca9b2635-952f-413c-9b93-ad916553d0e6, volume name "homes" (large files) But when I use the same command on a block device that was formated with JFS (using "mkfs.jfs -L backup /dev/sdc2"), I only get: $ file -s /dev/sdc2 /dev/sdc2: data Here's the output of mount for this block device (that works perfectly, btw): /dev/sdc2 on /mnt/backup type jfs (rw,noatime, nodiratime, errors =remount-ro) I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 with file 4.26-2ubuntu4. ** Affects: file (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- file(1) doesn't recognize JFS file system https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/395409 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 386905] Re: Kubuntu 9.04 Xorg/KDE freeze starting adobe reader 9.1.0
This has been happening to me for at least the past 6 months, maybe a year. I went digging for a bug report and was surprised hardly anyone's posted about it. Basically, the first time you open a pdf, either from your own computer or in firefox, the entire system locks up for a number of seconds - 10-30 on my dual core laptop. Even VLC videos stop playing. -- Kubuntu 9.04 Xorg/KDE freeze starting adobe reader 9.1.0 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/386905 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 393455] Re: GDM: Can't log in with KMS enabled
Hi. I believe I have this bug as well on a macbook 2,1. I have a fresh install of 9.04 and followed the instructions for upgrading to KMS here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting (except that I did not edit /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf or update initramfs as the kernel (2.6.30-10-generic) has kms enabled by default.) This is on x86_64. When I boot, the screen goes black, after 15 seconds it flickers and then the login screen appears with a corrupt mouse. I can move the mouse, but can not type anything or click on anything. Only hard-reset will recover the computer. During this time, I can ssh into the computer, and execute commands from the terminal, but oddly as root 'reboot' and 'halt' do not shut down the computer. I can kill the X-server, but that doesn't recover the computer. Booting with nomodeset kernel option seems to work fine. I've tried KMS on gentoo with the vanilla 2.6.30.1 kernel with same problem. Looking around the internet, there are only a few other people reporting this problem, and I've noticed they seem to have apple hardware of similar vintage. I believe this bug report is related: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=494390 lspci 8086:27a2 or 8086:27a3 as the video card ID seems to be consistently implicated, although I believe there are some people with this card who do not have apple hardware that have kms working. With Gentoo, if I do not have xmd (or similar) running at boot, the computer will boot to console; the switch to KMS terminal happens during the boot process as expected, but when I type 'startx' from the command line, the same problem happens. I will attach various files that I will try to get when ssh'ed into the computer when it is frozen. Thanks! ** Bug watch added: Red Hat Bugzilla #494390 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=494390 -- GDM: Can't log in with KMS enabled https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/393455 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 395360] Re: Title of guide should be changed to avoid confusion with new installation guide
Wouldn't it make more sense to have *one* installation guide, which has the new "friendly" info at the front, and the more technical info at the back, probably as an appendix or set of appendices? That way. both newcomers and experienced Linux/Unix people who search online for Ubuntu Installation Guide are likely to find the material they seek. Deciding arbitrarily that "newcomers have priority, so the old guide should give up its name" seems unhelpful. Bug (segfault) Confirmed in Karmic on i386 using ncurses-hexedit 0.9.7-14 and Stephen's updated step 4. Stephen: Now there is a 0.9.7-14 pacakge in Karmic, it would be good if you could create a debdiff from that, which will *only* contain your change for this bug, not other unrelated changes going from 0.9.7-13 to 0.9.7-14. BTW, REVU is not really needed/wanted for changes to existing packages, it is intended for new packages of software that until now did not have packages in Ubuntu. Erm, that's odd, it shouldn't have fixed it :-) It was only supposed to help in getting some more debug information. I've just realised that I uploaded the packages based on the karmic versions, so there were more changes than I expected. I just uploaded new ones with just the one change so we can narrow down what happened. Could you now do the following: * Downgrade to the released packages in jaunty and check the bug is still there. (if it isn't something weird is going on). * Install the +jw3 packages from that PPA and see if they fix it. [Bug 363272] Re: amd64 + vmware 1.0.9 vmware-authd broken
First, this isn't a proper fix - I'm definitely confirming this. My setup is vmware 1.0.9 on Kubuntu 9.04 _ 64 bit 2.6.28-13 kernel - same process as above - downloaded the zip file, applied the vmware- update patch, and had a messy but successful compile. Then ran into the pam thing. If you're impatient and just want to know what I ended up doing, scroll down to "Begin Workaround". So here is a complete insecure of a hack of a workaround to get a remote console up and running until this is properly worked out by someone who actually knows what they're doing. It worked for me - and if you're on a private network, have the same problem I did, and don't care about your VM's being password protected, than hopefully this might help. ** Warning** Messing with pam can cause heartache and pain if you screw up. There's a few issues here: -- /sbin/vmware_auth.d does not get along with this version of pam -- /sbin/vmware_auth.d is a 32 bit prg, and requires 32 bit pam libraries -- but the rest of the system needs to authenticate with 64 bit libraries -- the 32 bit libraries that come with vmware don't properly authenticate with this version of pam -- the pam.d path defaults to /lib/security - specifying another path doesn't seem to always work So here's the chain of events when you enter your user name and pass: connection -> xinetd -> /sbin/vmware_auth.d --> pam --> /etc/pam.d/vmware_authd --> /etc/pam/other The @include errors in auth.log are coming from /sbin/vmware_auth.d failing to parse the pam config files correctly- the result of vmware's auth.d not being completely compatible with this version of pam. These don't matter - even with a successful authentication, for some reason authd still goes out and tries to read the pam.d/other file. vmware-authd[17824]: PAM (other) illegal module type: @include ^^^program + pid spawned by xinetd ^^ doesn't like the @include in /etc/pam.d/other We don't care that it can't parse the pam.d/other file. What we care about is whether it can be successsul with the pam.d/vmware_authd settings. -- Now, vmware_auth.d needs two things to be successful from pam - a successful "auth" hit, and a successful "account" hit from /etc/pam.d/vmware_authd . If you point them it at the default (64 bit) system libraries like this: auth required pam_unix_auth.so shadow nullok accountsufficient pam_unix_acct.so /sbin/vmware_auth.d will barf with this in /var/log/auth.log: PAM [error: /lib/security/pam_unix_auth.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64] PAM [error: /lib/security/pam_unix_acct.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64] (You might want to test and verify this happens for you - if so, read on.. if not, you probably have some other problem) This is because /sbin/vmware_auth.d is 32 bit, and falls on its face when given 64 bit libraries. We know based on the above that the system looks in /lib/security for the listed modules... yet /lib/security is all 64 bit libraries, and vmware_auth.d needs 32 bit.So! It's handy that vmware server comes with 32 bit libraries in the tarball So just to test, I *renamed* and copied vmware's pam_unix_acct.so and pam_unix_auth.so into /lib/security. Then modified /etc/pam.d/vmware_authd to point to the new renamed 32bit libraries in /lib/security. (renamed with an added "-32" so not to overwrite the existing 64 bit libraries! make sure that doesn't happen..) This got me closer, but still no joy. The important thing is it actually used the modules without complaining, but they wouldn't return with a successful authentication after one was given. There were still the errors in /var/log/authlog (blah blah @include) but they were from that /etc/pam.d/other, and were ignorable. So it was hitting and using my 32 bit libraries without error, but not giving a successful authentication for some reason. --- Begin Workaround: --- Then I discovered something beautiful: pam_permit.so It's only job in life is to be a yes man. Being on a private network at home, I personally don't care about having my VM's password protected. If you *do* care about that - this fix is not for you. So - we can't use the system's pam_permit.so, because it's 64 bit --- but vmware thoughtfully provides a 32bit version. /vmware-server-distrib/lib/lib/libpam.so.0/security/pam_permit.so So copy it into /lib/security - **---> careful to change its name so you don't overwrite the 64 bit one: < cp /path/to/vmware-server-distrib/lib/lib/libpam.so.0/security/pam_permit.so /lib/security/pam_permit-32.so ^ edit /etc/pam.d/vmware_authd to satisfy both the "auth" and "account" requirements (note, this is the complete cut and paste from my working file): #%PAM-1.0 auth

[Bug 395388] [NEW] The Skype 2.0.0.72 version for linux does not work with 9.04 ubuntu
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: yelp The skype echo test reports that there is a "problem with audio playback". I use a 9.04 desktop i386 ubuntu jaunty jackalope OS. This I chose to enable me to use skype. The audio and streaming works on the internet on other applications, but seems to be of no avail on the skype application. Is there an updated Skype package as was mentioned for the 9.04 Ubuntu package? As i subscribe to Skype, I am keen on using Skype. Could you help me configure and get it working ? Thanking you.
