[Bug 368175] Re: Failed to load module "libcanberra-gtk-module.so"

2009-07-23 Thread Ceejay
OK, back to the bug... I had exactly the same problem - I guess that in
writing our scripts we were probably following similar models given in
the Xdialog documentation!

Both of the workarounds work for me, so my scripts work again, which is
great.

But can someone please remember that there does seem to be a bug here,
which is that Xdialog is kicking out these incorrect warnings about an
apparently irrelevant file not existing when it does!

Thanks

[Bug 389421] Re: Linux Generic 2.6.28-13.44 fails installation, probably due linux headers, needed by fglx to compile

2009-07-23 Thread Lluis Turró
Hi Leann,

isn't an issue anymore and I forgot posting what happened. After
deleting kernel 2.6.28-13 the update manager kept showing a blocked
update. The update was already installed on my system, so I tried
deleting the package and gave me no other packages involved in the
removal. I proceeded with the deletion and now update manager works as
used to.

But, there is always one, linux kernel 2.6.28-13 never showed again as a
possible update and is the only linux-generic package I have as possible
listed option in KPackageIt, and is not installed.

[Bug 403291] Re: 9.10 A3 candidate ISO, default session is not mythbuntu

2009-07-23 Thread Martin Pitt
I checked gdm's session behaviour. If the user does not have a ~/.dmrc,
the default is determined by ./daemon/gdm-session-direct.c,
get_fallback_session_name().

This checks if a "gnome" session is available, and uses it if so. If
not, it takes the first available session in /usr/share/xsessions/.
"First" isn't really defined in terms of asciibetical or so.

So if it is reasonable to just have one session by default in mythbuntu
(after bug 403289 is fixed), this might be enough. Otherwise we have to
reintroduce the concept of a system default session in
/etc/gdm/custom.conf.

[Bug 226272] Re: X video rendering intermittently fails if DRI or composite is enabled

2009-07-23 Thread etcetcetc
It's with a Samsung Q35 with VGA Output. Before I used Gentoo and I didn't have
any problems connecting the external monitor.
In the beginning it works, just after a while it starts flashing every few
minutes until finally the monitor becomes black. I can still switch to TTY1 to
reboot the system (restarting gdm doesn't help, afterwards the monitor still
stays black).
I'm using the external monitor only, switching of the laptop monitor.

[Bug 382703] Re: "Home Folder" has 3 different names

2009-07-23 Thread johnk
"Home" is terrible. Home directory is a concept, and "home" is the
unixy terminology. (Remember $HOME?)

"Home Folder" is also not good. It's hung up on the concept.

The first name is a bad idea, because if you have two users named John,
it'll get confusing.

The full name is good, because it's likely to be unique. However,
there's one level of indirection going from the name to the username.

The username is very good, because there's a simple mapping from the
directory to the username. Usually, the home directory is named the
same as the username.

username's Folder is also pretty good. The mapping is not that
confusing, and there's an element of explanation there. However,
anything less than a 1:1 mapping between names is generally negative.
It always leaves the question of whether one name is equivalent to
another name.

I think "username (home folder)" within Nautilus could work. It's
verbose, but explanatory, and the mapping between /home/username and
"username (home folder)" is pretty close. The format also mirrors the
old email convention where you'd have "username (Full Name)" in the
"To:" header.

Following up on the email idea, perhaps "Home Folder " would
be an acceptable label within Nautilus. The angle brackets denote the
"computer's identifier". The problem is that it looks too much like an
email address.

Personally, I prefer the short username.

Martin,

I've red the thread you mentioned, and I found out in it, that it should
be fixed in xbacklight, but this could take quite a long time... and
there is need of a fallback solution !

How many years do people experiencing that problem (on hp, samsung,
sony, mac laptop...) are going to wait to have their laptop properly
working ? Even Microsoft is shipping a new software, are tell the user
they have to wait 2 years until another project close the gap...

I can understand that it is the right way, but how can we get a fallback
solution for karmic ???

Hi Christophe,

perfect. Just the thing I would have proposed to do. So it is narrowed down

Assuming your thought if jfs is true (and this would make a log of sense as it
must be something not in the usual install, otherwise we should see much more
problems), there is one commit between your current place and the merge that
touches the jfs code. And that would be "helpers for acl caching + switch to
those"...

[Bug 292732] Re: PulseAudio crashes when moving audio stream

2009-07-23 Thread Laurent Bonnaud
I have a similar problem when I move an audio stream from the pulseaudio
server running on my laptop to the pulseaudio server running on my
Eeebox that is attached to my home HI-FI equipment.

Both systems run Ubuntu jaunty with this server version:

ii pulseaudio
1:0.9.14-0ubuntu20.2 PulseAudio sound server

One way to get it to work is to manually kill the server on my laptop,
then change the default server with padevchooser.

[Bug 402821] Re: Alt-Tab of a minimized window only shows icon

2009-07-23 Thread mac_v
@Travis Watkins:
I agree with you.

But the present behavior is not very helpful, when several windows of
nautilus/any other app are switched using Alt+Tab , only showing of the icon is
not ideal.
Rather if the switcher shows the thumbnail, the windows are easily
identifiable, than reading the title.

I believe this is achievable,
To test:
1: Open firefox, and open a page which loads slowly.
2: Minimize the window. Now we see the thumbnail used in the minimize animation
is of the present un-loaded page.
3: Wait for the page to load , now restore the window, Note the thumbnail used
in the restore animation is of the page fully loaded.

The new thumbnail can be refreshed similarly when the user uses Alt+Tab.

The same can be done for window preview also.

Do you think this is possible or do you foresee any problems?

[Bug 403379] [NEW] mouse sensitivity/acceleration cannot be set low enough

2009-07-23 Thread KimStebel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

What I expect to happen: Mouse pointer moves very slowly when I move the mouse
slowly and can be positioned precisely. It can be moved by just one pixel if

What actually happens: Mouse pointer never moves too fast, making it difficult

This problem did not occur with my previous mouse, which had a lower
resolution. I think resolution should be adjustable.

[Bug 403385] [NEW] How to disable built-in driver during ubuntu 9.04 installation?

2009-07-23 Thread Joseph
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I met a problem during Ubuntu 9.04 installation.
As we know, there are many drirver modules were built-in kenel to shorten the
boot time.
Now, the problem I met is I would like to load the updated driver from driver
updated CD and disable the built-in driver modules.
I tried several boot parameters, but didn't work.
for example:
sata_via.sata_via=no_probe (returns me "unknown boot parameter")
  sata_via=0 (or sata_via=noprobe)
sata_via.blacklist=yes (this should work if sata_via was built as module)
  sata_via=none (or sata_via.sata_via=none)
Any boot parameter to let me to disable the built-in driver module during
ubuntu 9.04 installation?
Thanks in advanced.

BRs,
Joseph

[Bug 402821] Re: Alt-Tab of a minimized window only shows icon

2009-07-23 Thread Travis Watkins
The thumbnail plugin hooks into the minimize window event and takes a
snapshot of the window at that time. This uses a lot of memory as it is
storing a raw pixmap (1MB per window for a RGBA 512x512 thumbnail). To
do this in the switcher plugin would cause the default setup of compiz
to suddenly use a lot more memory which would hurt users with low end
machines.

Also, each plugin would have to store its own copy of the thumbnails.
You could modify core to store them but then you have to at least
rebuild every plugin as you've changed the core ABI and you'd certainly
have to modify every plugin you wanted to use such functionality. Due to
the compiz core ABI version being the date the ABI was changed this
makes it hard to tell the difference (what if we change ABI the same day
upstream does?).

Even if such a patch was made every small change to core or one of the
plugins using this new feature would probably require tweaking the
patch. Such a significant change would also mean we could not forward a
lot of bugs upstream due to the differences. Also, when (if?) the next
compiz release comes out you'd have to completely rewrite the whole
patch anyway.

This is not a bug we can fix in Ubuntu without upstream support and
upstream does not like your proposed solution (they used it in the beryl
days and saw all the problems it caused). Even if we decided it was
worth the effort to diverge from upstream in this case it is certainly
not a papercut bug as it would require a lot of design and coding work
to make it work correctly.

[Bug 403389] [NEW] Dragging songs to rearrange within a playlist has major scrolling issues

2009-07-23 Thread Aaron
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

If you have a playlist that's long enough to have scroll bars, dragging
songs to rearrange them has a few major issues. To reproduce this bug,
do the following.

1. Create a playlist long enough to have scroll bars. The longer the better.
2. Pick a song close to the bottom of the list and start dragging.

When you start dragging, the list will suddenly jump up near the top. If
you move the mouse down to the bottom of the window, the list will not
scroll. However, it does scroll correctly if you move the mouse near the
top of the window.

A minimal patch applicable to the stable version of the package. If preparing a
patch is likely to be time-consuming, it may be preferable to get a general
approval from the SRU team first.
Attached

Detailed instructions how to reproduce the bug. These should allow someone who
is not familiar with the affected package to reproduce the bug and verify that
the updated package fixes the problem. Please mark this with a line "TEST
CASE:".
TEST CASE: Run dbus on hardy, watch memory increase.

A discussion of the regression potential of the patch and how users could get
inadvertently affected.
Minimal, fix is obvious, upstream and tested in later versions.
