with the nolapic option does the system still lock up with the same
tick_handle_periodic() trace?
that lets it boot on mine after fiving the no local apic message and emulating
in software thing. however the system does completely freeze up after 10
minutes or so use where before it's been solid for days, so there are certainly
issues with something. I've emailed gigabyte asking them to have a look at this
thread to at very least pass comment on if the issue is with the kernel or
might be the bios.

[Bug 398026] Re: [GM45] Default 60Hz display mode drives LVDS incorrectly

2009-08-03 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Oded, I also get a complaint that i915.modeset=0 is an unknown boot
option when adding it to the kernel command line. It still disables KMS,
though.

The reason that you cannot remove i915 while the system is running is
that the module is responsible for _all_ modesetting on the system, not
only for X. This is one of its advantages - all the mode setting is
coordinated from one piece of code. On my computer the VT fonts are
different when KMS is enabled. One easy (but probably not standard) way
of recognizing if KMS is used is to look at the display names in the
output of xrandr and Xorg.0.log. UMS (Userland mode setting) uses names
like LVDS, VGA, VGA-1, etc. but KMS uses LVDS1, VGA1, etc. There's
probably something in dmesg output that gives away KMS as well.

Even if you don't see any difference with UMS (i.e. KMS disabled),
Xorg.0.log and the xrandr output for that case may be useful for someone
who knows what to look for.

Yes, Heikki that works - I had forgotten about that.

[Bug 399821] Re: [i845] karmic fails to initialise display on boot. 2.6.31-3 + drm + Intel 845G

2009-08-03 Thread Twig
I had more time than I orginally thought today to do some further
testing (and lots of googling) and have made some progress.

The mainline 2.6.31 rc3 kernel worked correctly. I can boot the
problematic rc3 kernel by passing the nomodeset parameter.

If I pass the VGA = ask parameter to the rc2 kernel I get a list of VGA
modes. If I do the same thing with the rc3 kernel I get the same list of
VGA modes plus a second set of VESA modes (none of which appear to
work).

That led me to this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
vesa/+bug/401214

and I've tried turning debugging on as suggested with:

echo 1 | sudo tee /sys/module/drm/parameters/debug

Although didn't get any extra output.

A little more searching led to a very similar looking bug report:

http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20115

with a patch attached at comment #50. I'm now at a point where I
probably need to learn how to patch a kernel which I won't get chance to
do today. However, at least it looks like this has been narrowed down to
a problem with KMS. Alternatively, I could be headed in completely the
wrong direction as this stuff is a bit over my head. Let me know if
there's anything else I can try. I'll post any further results.

Twig.

[Bug 408474] [NEW] Language variants information missing in the language selection list

2009-08-03 Thread David Planella
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

In the login screen of Karmic, the user has the possibility to choose a
different language than the one defined as default.

Some language packs install language variants along with the main
language, which can then be selected in that list of languages. Some
examples of language variants: c...@valencia, s...@latin, etc.

The jaunty gdm version showed an indication of the variant in the list,
in the form of " ()". In
Karmic, the variant information is lost, showing the same two language
choices in the list.

The attached screenshot shows this situation. In Jaunty, the two
highlighted entries woould have been:

Between these 2 Ubuntu versions the default linux loader has been
changed.
The old one is now avaible with linux16/initrd16
The difference is that the new one loads the kernel at the 32bit entry
point whereas the old one loads it like any other loader at the 16bit
entry point.
What kernel version are you using?
I doubt it's the missing initrd.

I have never ever seen it, but I never used flickr either. If a common
use case exposes this, I'm fine if our team works on it. It just seems
like a very corner case to me.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

Hello,

Thanks for your report, but I do not think this is a bug. sbuild is
supposed to be invoked from your real system and performs the build
inside the chroot. It does not need to be available inside the chroot
for this.

[Bug 398026] Re: [GM45] Default 60Hz display mode drives LVDS incorrectly

2009-08-03 Thread Oded Arbel
Sorry about the late reply - I'm moving to a new apartment and haven't
got much time. It took me a while to figure out what is KMS, and then to
try to disable it. When I add i915.modeset=0 to the kernel command line,
it complains that its an unknown boot option and modinfo shows no such
parameter supported by the i915 module.

for some reason I can't remove i915 in order to reinstall it with the
option on the command line (it complains that the module is in use even
if I shutdown everything X), so I added a modprobe config file in a
final effort to turn it off. I'm not sure that it did anything and I
don't know how to verify, but the output of LVDS modes is identical.

[Bug 408462] [NEW] Skye launches with cleanlook style instead of user's Gnome/GTK/QGtkStyle set style

2009-08-03 Thread mlaverdiere
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04, Skype lauches with it's default Cleanlook style
instead of the user's set GTK/Gnome style, which should be "translated"
as a qt style with help of QGtkStyle, which is installed by default (I
think) since Ubuntu 9.04.

To have Skype load with a style corresponding to the
Gnome/GTK/QGtkStyle's set by the user, the --disable-cleanlooks
argument should be used when lauching, as in:

I've only tried the mouse, and I've not used anything other than KDE.
When I use the script, then there is only the "dismiss this startup

[Bug 408460] [NEW] iPython2.5 on Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope gives stack trace when launching %quickref or %magic or ? commands

2009-08-03 Thread Jim J
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ipython

When you start iPython a python version specific way (ipython2.5), you get a
stack trace if you try to use some of the built in iPython utilities,
documentation and functions.

What happens:

If you type %quickref, %magic, or ?, you get a python stack dump that
looks something like this:

What should happen:

Using the SAME iPython package to launch the default iPython environment

same error when trying to launch those internal iPython commands.

It doesn't have to auto-upgrade, but there should be a way to install
Firefox 3.5 so that it REPLACES Firefox 3.0, instead of confusingly co-

poor desktop integration. Can't a package (3.5) specify that another

the new one is installed?

Running the following on karmic:

Kernel: 2.6.31-4.23

When reloading apparmor with /etc/init.d/apparmor force-reload, I get
the following:

Well, it could be one of your extensions. You can try disabling them
all and then enable them one by one to figure out which one is causing
the trouble.

[Bug 407324] Re: /etc/init.d/freeradius stop don't work

2009-08-03 Thread Andreas Olsson
Sorry about being picky about the package version number. I just wanted
to be sure that there were no (other) issue preventing you from getting
the most recent package.

A fresh install of freeradius 2.1.0+dfsg-0ubuntu4, in which above
mentioned pid issue is fixed, will give you a
/etc/freeradius/radiusd.conf including these two lines

  run_dir = ${localstatedir}/run/freeradius
  pidfile = ${run_dir}/freeradius.pid

Is it possible that your /etc/freeradius/radiusd.conf instead till have
these old values

  run_dir = ${localstatedir}/run/radiusd
  pidfile = ${run_dir}/radiusd.pid

If so, do you have any memory of during an upgrade deciding to keep
parts of your old /etc/freeradius/radiusd.conf?

[Bug 405079] Re: Please sync apachetop 0.12.6-10 from debian unstable

2009-08-03 Thread Stefan Ebner
Sync request ACKed.

Arnaud, it seems you are missing some bits.
First you have to subscribe ubuntu-universe-sponsors (in case you work in the
universe)
and in case it's a sync they set it to "Confirmed" and subscribe the
Ubuntu-archive who does
the rest.

Please read:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SponsorshipProcess
and especially
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/Sponsorship/SponsorsQueue

[Bug 277589] Re: sony brighness on a geforce series older than 8 (nvclock works fine)

2009-08-03 Thread Alex
@yleetiny,

first solution to move "/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/10-sony-
laptop-brightness.fdi" to "/usr/share/hal/fdi/preprobe/20thirdparty"
does not work.

But the second (to move "10-sony-laptop-brightness.fdi" to
"/usr/share/hal/fdi/preprobe/10osvendor/") WORKS!

Also I've found out that "" actions are required. If I comment them the
solution doesn't work.

Thank you yleetiny!

[Bug 398535] Re: please review and sponsor all-in-one-sidebar (updated)

2009-08-03 Thread Sveinung Kvilhaugsvik
I tried to uploaded it to REVU a while ago as requested. I can't see
that it has shown up. Please note that this is an updated version and
not a new package. Does REVU block updates to packages already in
Ubuntu? In that case I can upload it somewhere else.

By the way, am I correct to assume that you also will take care of
merging ( https://code.launchpad.net/~kvilhaugsvik/firefox-extensions
/all-in-one-sidebar.ubuntu/+merge/8652 ) the branch as well?

[Bug 377135] Re: [needs-packaging] processing

2009-08-03 Thread Adam Horden
Sorry for the late update to this, this is in progress and I am close to
a release. I have had to work on some dependencies and there are a few
other things that need a good clean up. I have not had much time to work
on this but this has now changed and I can get back to working on this.
I am hoping to get this released soon but its not an easy package to
create. I was hoping to get this released before Karmic Kola.

[Bug 395905] Re: "System->About Ubuntu" should more directly display version information

2009-08-03 Thread Matthew East
I agree with Kenneth that adding a version number to the graphic is
undesirable. Most importantly, it's contrary to the usual branding
philosophy used in relation to the logo (i.e. that it should remain
unchanged except where there is a good reason to change it) - this is to
ensure consistency with the Ubuntu logo. For me, this is a prime place
for the logo to retain its consistency.

Furthermore, it would actually be quite a pain to update the image for
every release. It's very easy for us to update the version number in the
text because it is changed globally throughout ubuntu-docs in an entity,
but that wouldn't be true of the graphic.

Lastly, I think that moving the new text with the version number to the
top of the file means that this is now pretty clear.

Re-marking the bug as fixed on that basis. Please feel free to post back
here if you disagree, but I'd rather keep the bug status as it is
pending any different consensus.

[Bug 322902] Re: incorrect encryption detected when logging on to WPA ad-hoc wireless network

2009-08-03 Thread Kev
I could reproduce this bug as described.

If you try to add the correct network with wpa to the network manager
with the edit buttons and type adhoc, it won't work, too.

So it's actually impossible to create or join(?) a secure adhoc network
with ubuntu because wep is not secure, you know.

I think it's a really dangerous situation...like a rope of sand.

[Bug 291271] Re: Jockey Not Detecting Broadcom Wireless Card, When It Should & Provide Use of B43 or STA Driver

2009-08-03 Thread emzak
Hi,

I have HP Pavillion dv6000 series and having the same issue. From the
observation I could tell my wifi woke up two times after 2 kernel
updates. However, next day (and reboot) it was dead again. The card is
not detected at all.

I was quite looking forward to next kernel update to check if it wakes
up again, but in the last time it remained dead.

This bug indeed exists and should be sorted out :-/ As I'm no guru into
kernel, I plugged wire at the moment and will watch this bug-thread for
some further ideas..

Good luck.

[Bug 406726] Re: can't connect to a WPA encrypted network

2009-08-03 Thread Kev
Please read what Tony Espy has written about the differences of ad-hoc
and access point networks once again.

You can't "create a network with the gnome panel applet" to connect to an
access point. That doesn't work. Never.
Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_LAN#Types_of_wireless_LANs for
more informations.
In short words: "Create network" is when you want to connect 2 computers
without an access point.

(connecting 2 computers with wpa does not work in ubuntu, actually but
that's another bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-
manager/+bug/322902 )

Can you connect with Ubuntu 9.04 at your home to your access point?
(maybe try livecd)

[Bug 345054] Re: please sync monkeysphere 0.26 from debian unstable

2009-08-03 Thread dkg
Changing from "Fix Released" back to "Confirmed" because syncing 0.25-1
doesn't resolve the potential FTBFS that Ilya raises, while 0.26-1
should have a cleverer test suite that can complete without failure even
when running under /tmp or other directories with loose permissions.
(it does this by selectively disabling tests when run under a too-loose
directory)
