[Bug 66015] Re: Duplicate spell checking dictionaries for every entry

2009-08-28 Thread rugby471
Here is the current issue:

In the directory /usr/share/myspell/dicts there is the situation that
when a language is installed, (for example English [United Kingdom]) the
file 'en_GB.dic' is created, but also a symlink to it is created called
'en-GB.dic'

The trouble is OpenOffice looks for 'en_GB.dic' and firefox looks for
'en-GB.dic' so we can't just delete either one. The reason firefox adds
these duplicate entries is because of these symlinks.

I think the trouble is that Firefox is look for the entries with a
hyphen between them, which is not the standard naming of these myspell
dictionary files so firefox shall have to be patched.

[Bug 420933] Re: Current grub-pc takes several minutes to show menu

2009-08-28 Thread jocko
The same problem here too, but no where near minutes.
The "[minimal BASH-like..." message, which before the last grub-pc update would
only flash by in half a second, now stays up for eleven seconds with constant
noises from the hard drive. After the boot menu comes up everything appears to
work normally (or perhaps there is a very slight delay for the actual boot to
start after I hit enter, but that may just be in my imagination).

This is on an old nforce2 system (gigabyte GA-7nnxp) with a SiI 3112
SATA controller.

The /etc/init.d/hwclock.sh tests for "$GMT" = "-u"
but /etc/default/rcS has GMT=yes
the net result is the hwclock is treated as localtime.

This could be fixed by fixing either of these files.

[Bug 377915] Re: basic256 (0.9.2) crushes under Ubuntu 9.04

2009-08-28 Thread callipygous_houston
I encountered basic256 locking up on the "t" when typing "print" or
pasting text with the "t" character.

Work around found:
Instead of launching from the main menu, open a terminal window.
At the prompt type "basic256 &" (no quotes) and close the terminal window by
typing "exit" (no quotes).

BASIC-256 launches and runs without the aforementioned issue.

Happy programming!!!

[Bug 409361] Re: Seeing drm:intel_dp_i2c_init errors on boot

2009-08-28 Thread Martin Olsson
Robbie, the BootDmesg.gz that you attached seems corrupt and the
CurrentDmesg.txt doesn't show the error. Can you please run "dmesg" and
attach the output of that? It's interesting to see if you have both the
displayport error and the MTRR allocation failed or if you have just the
displayport error.

Anyway, I've upstreamed this to intel:

[Bug 416041] Re: Regression network-manager doesn't work on karmic koala and kde 4

2009-08-28 Thread nowardev
Joe...*network manager sucks...

well on jaunty works fine (dhcp..)

is on karmic that doesn't work and this freaking thing is very very very
very very bad for a linux distribution

network is very important for the use of linux but is very important to
fix problems that one could have with his hardware...

i am a kubuntu user since 2006-2007 and kde stuff has always problems
with networking much more than ubuntu and not because of kde ...

as i said on jaunty NM +kde 4.3 works fine.

Unfortunately not. It needs to be ported to work with the new version
of Evolution. I assume that upstream will do so before Evolution 2.28
is final and that we can get it in for Karmic though...

[Bug 214154] Re: Can't VSYNC properly on ATI (Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT)

2009-08-28 Thread Bryce Harrington
[This is an automatic notification.]

A new version of the -ati driver is now available in Karmic.

This is a significant update to -ati which brings in kernel mode-setting
(currently disabled, unless booting with the radeon.modeset=1 kernel
option) and scores of fixes for DRI2, EXA, and more.

I've posted the new version of this driver to the following PPA,
would you mind testing it and seeing if it resolves this bug?

  Karmic

If you're not running this release of Ubuntu, you can try booting the
https://edge.launchpad.net/~bryceharrington/+archive/ppa/+sourcepub/709908/+listing-archive-extra
LiveCD and loading the PPA onto it, and then log out/in to restart X.
ISOs are available at http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/

After testing Karmic, report back here whether it's still an issue or not,
and if it is please post a fresh Xorg.0.log and 'dmesg' output.

Note there could be new bugs... please file these as new reports using
the command 'ubuntu-bug xorg'.

Looks like this is Radeon related and affects both the radeon and radeon

[Bug 355613] Re: wireshark/libpcap does not support sniffing USB streams

2009-08-28 Thread Dan Lenski
I don't think this problem is just with Jaunty. I'm having the same
problem with Intrepid (found this while Googling for it).

Also, neither tcpdump nor wireshark will actually log the *contents* of
the USB packets (aka URBs), merely things like the length and type of
packet. Is this a problem with AppArmor, or with libpcap?

Problem is in a variable $LINKS in script
/var/lib/dpkg/info/mythweb.postinst. There is used variable $datadir and

automatically now) so this once only: java-gnome 4.0.13 was released

[in time for your version "k" feature freeze, at least, that was the
idea]

Just FYI. Over to you 'n all that :)

[Bug 420933] [NEW] Current grub-pc takes several minutes to show menu

2009-08-28 Thread Dean Loros
Public bug reported:

With the latest grub-pc update, grub2 takes several minutes to get to
the menu. During this time there is almost constant hard drive
activity...this did not happen with the last update which would take 5

Please advise as to further information needed.

[Bug 331506] Re: BOINC randomly freezes Ubuntu (Intrepid 64 bit)

2009-08-28 Thread Aaron Novstrup
Forgot to mention last time that I'm also using nvidia.

I compiled and installed the boinc_6.4.5+dfsg-2ubuntu1_amd64 package
from the Karmic source repository, and it freezes my machine, too.

The last entries recorded in the kernel log before the crash (pasted
below) look suspiciously like a loop, but I don't know enough about the
kernel to say whether its just normal behavior. Is anyone else seeing
this? What about on 32-bit machines?

I'm going to continue testing to see if this behavior consistently
coincides with the crashes.

Here's the relevant portion of the kernel log:

[Bug 420918] Re: please update libcapi

2009-08-28 Thread Rolf Leggewie
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: isdnutils

- Unfortunately, activity in ISDN related packages is slow to put it
- mildly. Debian upstream seems to be missing for about three years now.
- I'd like to suggest to replace the capi20 directory in the source code

- and added a few features. The code is backward compatible and necessary
- for new applications like ffgtk. Code development is supported by the
- AVM company, a reputable German hardware manufacturer very active behind
- ISDN related code development in Linux.

The isdn4utils project has already accepted the code, the old capi20
code is stale. The code has also been shipping in OpenSuse for a few
months. Jan-Michael tells me there very few errors reported and they
were all minor, related to compilation issues. I've made a package in my
PPA which can serve as a test ground. It demonstrates the changes I am
requesting here. Let us know if there are any questions or things that
  need consideration and discussion.

We're also pushing for a new upstream release, but given the slow nature
of development it's not clear when that can actually happen.

[Bug 420578] Re: Karmic: PCM volume (as seen in alsamixer) "stuck" at 100% with pulseaudio enabled

2009-08-28 Thread Mike Pontillo
Here's another interesting thing I noticed while running "pulseaudio"
from the command line:

E: alsa-sink.c: ALSA woke us up to write new data to the device, but there was
actually nothing to write!
E: alsa-sink.c: Most likely this is a bug in the ALSA driver 'snd_hda_intel'.
Please report this issue to the ALSA developers.
E: alsa-sink.c: We were woken up with POLLOUT set -- however a subsequent
snd_pcm_avail() returned 0 or another value < min_avail.

You can't have accurate data for this until AMD releases a driver that
is compatible with karmic (currently none such exists).

[Bug 303997] Re: problem with big uids in "Users and Groups" tool

2009-08-28 Thread Kari Hautio
Well, I would recommend checking the facts first. What there is in
login.defs is following (read the comment).

#
# Min/max values for automatic uid selection in useradd
#
UID_MIN 1000
UID_MAX 6

I.e. the automatic selection of the new UID should use these values, but
it does not define any limits for manual selection.

The actual UID is a 32bit value (it used to be 16bits long ago). Also in
many corporate environments large (>10) UID values are used to
create a very large continuous UID space (basically to avoid the nobody
at 65534).

[Bug 420924] [NEW] suspend resume fails in kubuntu

2009-08-28 Thread Dave North
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release:9.10

Starting probably August 26 resume fails on Kubuntu Karmic a4. It still
works fine on the same machine when using Openbox instead of KDE, and
all the failures seem to relate to kwin, kdm and other kde apps such as
konsole. The window manager fails to show the panel, and konsole is
buried behind the background. Window decorations disappear.

I've been trying to track the issue through ps, various log files and
other typical procedures, but I cannot find anything out of order that
way when I compare the results to the xubuntu/openbox install. Running
the same kernel. Here's a basic lspci output so you can identify the
hardware. Glad to supply any further information.

Re:[Bug 417570] Re: hard disk is really hot

2009-08-28 Thread ilu

First of all,i will give you a general describtion about my laptop.my laptop
is hp540,i am using ubuntu to control my entire laptop, usually the tempera-ture
of the hard drive is 46~52 celsius. And when i was using windows xp,it was
always less than 40 celsius.
The fact is,as you know, this is summer,so when i use ubuntu these days,my
laptop is really hot,if i use many applications, such as toterm or screen-saver
or openoffice,the temperature is very high,as i said 52 calsius.when i do
nothing,the temperature will be 45~46 celsius.And in winxp,it is less than 40
celsius, even when i am using many applications.
The detailed information about my laptop is presented in the
"submissio-n.xml",you can open it with firefox.
In order to give you detailed information about my laptop hd temperetu-re,i
managed to record the temperatuer of my wdc every 5 minutes from 090828 23:00
to 090829 12:00,i also took some screenshots.
I am sorry that i can not give you more detailed information about my hd
temperature in windows xp,because i am using ubuntu to control my laptop
entirely.Although i can change my laptop into a "windows xp + ubuntu" double
os,but i am too lazy to do that. But i can promise you that when i was using
windows xp,the hd temperature was always less than 40 celsius.
Is it just because that i don't know how to configure my hardware? Can you
tell me how to cool my hd down?
By the way,i find that almost all linux operating systems have the same
problem.Including debian,ubuntu,arch,puppy.I don't know why.But it is really
important to our computers,isn't it?

Appendix:
here are the files i used to monite my system.
script-
file name:hdtemp
contents:
echo -current time
date
echo--hard drive temperature--
hddtemp /dev/sda

[Bug 418379] Re: Firefox url loading on middle-click is broken on Jaunty

2009-08-28 Thread Benjamin Thyreau
You right !

For some reason, the default must have been changed. Doing what you said
did restore the normal behaviour, but it was impossible to guess - and
because this feature is very hard to voluntary need, even "new" users of
Firefox would never think of enabling it.

I think this is a major regression. Hopefully this was a non-LTS
release. I hope it is fixed for the next LTS release, as breaking things
which worked is absolutely disastrous from the customer point of view
(even more than things which never worked).

Thanks for the tips, still. Maybe this should be added to the Jaunty
release notes errata or something !

** Changed in: firefox-3.0 (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete => Confirmed

[Bug 420918] [NEW] please update libcapi

2009-08-28 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: isdnutils

Unfortunately, activity in ISDN related packages is slow to put it
mildly. Debian upstream seems to be missing for about three years now.
I'd like to suggest to replace the capi20 directory in the source code
with the new work done by Jan-Michael Brummer. He modularized the code
and added a few features. The code is backward compatible and necessary
for new applications like ffgtk. Code development is supported by the
AVM company, a reputable German hardware manufacturer very active behind
ISDN related code development in Linux.

https://www.isdn4linux.de/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/isdn4k-utils/capi20.new/

The isdn4utils project has already accepted the code, the old capi20
code is stale. The code has also been shipping in OpenSuse for a few
months. Jan-Michael tells me there very few errors reported and they
were all minor, related to compilation issues. I've made a package in my
PPA which can serve as a test ground. It demonstrates the changes I am
requesting here. Let us know if there are any questions or things that
need consideration and discussion.

We're also pushing for a new upstream release, but given the slow nature
of development it's not clear when that can actually happen.

[Bug 420841] Re: karmic nautilus fails to run as root

I get this message when I try to open Nautilus with root privileges in

So I opened the following thread at ubuntuforums:

Eventually, I solved this problem thanks to corncob's suggestion to type
"sudo su" to change to the root prompt and then typing "nautilus".

[Bug 420578] Re: Karmic: PCM volume (as seen in alsamixer) "stuck" at 100% with pulseaudio enabled

2009-08-28 Thread Mike Pontillo
Upon Daniel's suggestion on IRC ("ok, so you probably want to look at
/usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output*", "IF it turns out
not to be a codec (driver) issue, you may try changing the volume =
merge") I tried replacing all occurrences of "merge" with "ignore" in
/usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output.conf. This stops
the behavior described in the bug, and I can set the volumes however I
want in alsamixer.

[Bug 409440] Re: upstream compiled binaries built with executable stacks

2009-08-28 Thread C de-Avillez
AMD64, ATI x1250. Blank screen on restart, no response on
Ctrl/Alt/F[0-9], no response to Ctrl/Alt/Del. Did respond to pressing
the Power button, and powered off.

Although sounds bad, this is actually an improvement over the previous
versions -- machine would not respond at all.

[Bug 420893] Re: Editing m4a metadata corrupts file

2009-08-28 Thread Ambiguity
After looking at the affected files in Easy Tag, they all seem to have the
following problems:
Year is 2005-1-, before it was just 2005
Total Tracks is 01 or 02, before it was accurate
Before they did not have a picture, now they have a picture but it can't be
viewed
The file size is approximately 300-400K larger than before
