[Bug 435484] Re: init script incorrectly 'su's

2009-09-24 Thread Alex Lourie
Herb,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Can you please be more specific? What do you mean by doesn't work? Do you get
an error while starting it?
I've checked the init script, and it is perfectly normal to run su $USER being
already a $USER.

[Bug 435719] [NEW] gvfs-fuse fails to start on NFS mounted homes

2009-09-24 Thread Andreas Heinlein
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

gvfsd usually start a gvfs-fuse-daemon for GVFS mounts, which fuse-
mounts to $HOME/.gvfs. This fails if the home directory resides on an
NFS share with root squashing enabled. Thus, users in a
corporate/networked environment with such NFS homes cannot use gvfs
effectively, since a lot of applications rely on the fuse mount.

For those unfamiliar with NFS, root squashing means the local UID 0 is
mapped to the anonymous/nobody UID on the remote system when it tries to
access the NFS share. Since home and subdirectories have permissions
0700, $HOME/.gvfs cannot be accessed by root in this case. This makes
the mount() call of gvfs-fuse-daemon fail (verifiable with 'strace gvfs-
fuse-daemon /home/user/.gvfs').

There are two solutions to this:
a) disable root squashing
b) move the .gvfs directory somewhere else

a) is not a good choice for security reasons. b) seems not to be
possible at the moment. I looked at the sources for the current (jaunty
and karmic) gvfs package and found

mount-fuse_mountpoint = g_build_filename (g_get_home_dir(), .gvfs,
fs_name, NULL);

in daemon/mount.c. Even though gvfs-fuse-daemon can be called with any
path you like, it looks like the path which gfvsd uses for the call is
hard-coded. I was able to symlink /home/user/.gvfs to /tmp/.gvfs, and
this works. But I am not sure if that is a good solution.

I would like to ask the package maintainers to a) include a README.NFS
in the package which points out the problem and workaround (I can write
one if you like) and b) forward this bug upstream to the right place, so
the path with which gfvs-fuse-daemon gets called can be configured.

[Bug 435725] [NEW] [Karmic] CPU audible through laptop speakers

I've been having an issue where the audio in the current build of Karmic
is a bit cludgy. It tends to audibly pop on when audio is set to play
and crackle constantly through the speakers whenever there is no sound
being transmitted. It seems that it may be making audible the signals of

relative to the activity of the computer at the time.

[Bug 433944] Re: Files on gvfs mounts cannot be opened when home is on NFS

2009-09-24 Thread Andreas Heinlein
You're right, gvfs-fuse does not work with NFS homes right now, at least
not with root-squashing enabled. UID 0 needs to get access to ~/.gvfs
for mounting, which fails in this case. Unfortunately, the path for
.gvfs cannot be easily changed.

I have posted a new bug against gvfs for this
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/435719). As a
temporary workaround, it is possible to symlink ~/.gvfs to /tmp/.gvfs.

I still wonder why it works with the vanilla packages, though. Does
vanilla support native GIO/GVFS? I tried yesterday with the latest
karmic packages, because the Changelog mentioned something about gvfs
fuse, but it did not work either.

any card inserted in the reader is not detected by the module.

Any thoughts?

[Bug 435727] [NEW] Border around location / search / main pane is unnecessary

2009-09-24 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-store

The location and search bars in software-store, as well as the main pane
have an unattractive border around them. This border surrounds the whole
group although they individually already have a border, and seems to
serve no purpose. Removing it would make the whole window feel tidier
and less cluttered.

I am attaching a screenshot showing how they look now, and a mockup
showing how they would look without it.

Additionally, this would allow us to align vertically the location and
search bars with the main pane, which now can't be done (presumably
because they would touch the border.

Please see the attached mockup with vertical alignment. Compare with the

[Bug 297962] Re: brightness hardware control on Samsung R510 doesn't work

2009-09-24 Thread skalka
I can confirm this on my new Samsung R519 equipped with the GM45 Intel
chipset. With a pathed and recompiled kernel by me I can use fn buttons
but brightness doesn't change. With
/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/30-keymap-misc.fdi modded I
can see brightness notifications when I unplug AC power but brightness
doesn't change. If i repeat this operation during Usplash it works, so I
can choose brightness during Usplash. For example if I turn on pc with
battery I'll get low brightness, but I cannot change during session. If
you need more informations let me know. I hope this bug will be solved
with Karmic cos it's quite impossible to use the pc without brightness
regulations, battery is sad about it and my eyes too.

[Bug 435106] Re: Can't remove software-store from main menu

2009-09-24 Thread Andrew Cowie
Ok, I figured out what I was missing: Alacarte showed the Software
Store, but over on the right hand side, after Applications (ie not in
any of Applications's immediate subcategories). Because it was showing
in the main menu as a top level (between System Tools and Places) I
had been looking on the *left* hand side for the menu entry to uncheck.

So, not a bug, though perhaps it could be taken as a suggestion on the
discoverability front.

2009-09-24 Thread Michael
Thank you, Yannick.

My sister will download and try the new version over the weekend.

Testing on my own updated Ekiga to call 5...@ekiga.net and 5...@ekiga.net I
get 'Security check failed.'

I'll see what I've stuffed up.

Best wishes!

Michael.

 Hi,

Ekiga 3.2.6 was relesed yesterday. It is a major improvement in terms of
stability. I advice you give it a try.

Your issue might be related to a bug affecting the whole 3.2.x serie:
using to many codecs turns calls to fail.

 Please try this:
Update your Ekiga with 3.2.6 using my packages:
 https://launchpad.net/~sevmek/+archive/ekiga-released

Ask your sister to upgrade to 3.2.6 too:
 http://wiki.ekiga.org/index.php/Windows_Users
 (using 3.2.6 Release)

Please try this setup and tell me if it works:
Disable all audio codecs but G722, disable all video codecs but Theora
on both ends (you and your sister). Try to place the call.

 Best regards,
 Yannick

[Bug 367375] Re: SRU: cpu usage goes to 100%

2009-09-24 Thread Martin Pitt
The uploaded package does not look particularly suitable, though:

 - Please merge the changelogs, or build with -v, so that users actually
see the relevant parts.

 - Breaks older changelog entries (capitalization of intrepid and
jaunty)

 - Drops the desktop-multiplier package (which is fine for karmic, but
unsuitable for an SRU)

 - Adds an upstart script, which didn't get tested in Jaunty; even
worse, the upstart script execs /opt/userful/bin/umx-init.sh; I hope the
actual .deb installs itself into /usr/ ?

 - lib/security/pam_external_exec.la introduces a new dependency
-lglib-2.0

 - .desktop file changes strings:
 -Name=Userful Control Panel
 +Name=Userful

[Bug 430654] Re: udev 147 outputs warnings about default rules

2009-09-24 Thread nerling
Kubuntu Karmic x64,
I'm experimenting the same issue as ilna describes:
After a upgrade KDE starts, but mouse and keyboard(s) are not usable.
I tried with gdm, but it does not start. (upstart)
I see that no upstart service will be started on boot in my machine. Maybe this
is the whole problem!
udev is not starting, too! no pts, no psaux! no tty!

The last upgrade (as from Thu Sep 24 10:33:11 2009 ) does not fix the
issue.

Well, I'm not grounching, since it is alpha software, but I was really
loving to use Karmic.
