[Bug 462933] [NEW] [via_rhine] WOL after suspend works only once

2009-10-28 Thread TheNinja
Public bug reported:

WOL after suspend works only once each reboot. If I suspend the computer after
I woke it once, WOL won't work any more, but bringing it back using the power
button seems to be fine.
I'm using an old Gericom Notebook with a Via Rhine II onboard LAN.
To get WOL to work in the first place I
- edited /etc/init.d/halt (NETDOWN=no)
- added these lines to my /etc.rc.local
  ethtool -s eth0 wol g
  echo -n ILAN | tee /proc/acpi/wakeup
  echo -n PCI0 | tee /proc/acpi/wakeup
- also tried to change some variables in /etc/default/acpi-support:
  MODULES_WHITELIST=via_rhine   # addded via_rhine
  STOP_SERVICES=networking# added networking
  SKIP_INTERFACES=dummy qemu eth0  # added eth0

After the first wake up using WOL, ethtool and /proc/acpi/wakeup show the same
proper values.
The attached pm-suspend.log and dmesg.log are taken after the following
sequence:
- reboot
- suspend and resume with power-button
- suspend and resume with WOL
- suspend and resume with power-button after trying WOL
Interesting is this line via-rhine: Woke system up. Reason: Magic packet. in
dmesg. It appears each time when _trying_ to wake the pc with WOL. Thus it
seems the packet is coming through to the ethernet module (via_rhine), but it
can wake up the pc only the first time.

btw: also tried the kernel parameter apm=on apm=power-off with no
effect. For the latest tests and dumps I removed them again.

[Bug 462936] [NEW] emacs package depends on the older version emacs22

2009-10-28 Thread IRIE Shinsuke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: emacs23

After installation of Ubuntu 9.10RC, I installed emacs23 package but not
emacs package, and was additionally going to install w3m-el-snapshot
package which depends on emacs package. However, I stopped installing
w3m-el-snapshot because emacs package required to install emacs22
package by its dependencies:

The installation candidate of emacs package is the latest version 23,
but this package strangely depends on the older version 22:

emacs package is described as follows:

[Bug 462939] [NEW] Lid close with intel 82852/855GM provoques black screen, loss of control and overeat

2009-10-28 Thread Zenigata17
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Well basicly this bug looks almost like bug #138256 :

When closing the lid and reopening it, the screen remains black and the
laptop is not responding to anything (ctrl alt + Fx, ctrl alt +backspace
or even SysRq are not working) the only way to get out is to power off
the laptop with button.

Tis bug is quite dangerous because the PC is NOT in suspend mode : it
generate a lot of heat, and thus closing the lid and putting the laptop
in a bag may result in dangerous overheat leading irremediable to
hardware failure.

1) #138256 is old (2007) and fix is released, when this is a bug I did not have
under 9.04 and have under 9.10
2) Putting the following in xorg.conf does not help

Section Device
 ... other options here ...
 Option ForceEnablePipeA true
EndSection

Maybe the solution 2 works if there is something else than xorg.conf
where to put this since a few Ubuntu release xorg.conf is minimalistic.

I believe this bug is very severe.

[Bug 462937] [NEW] An open menu renders laptop quick lauch buttons inactive.

2009-10-28 Thread martin
Public bug reported:

9.10 Beta
HP DV6720ez Laptop

If a menu is open in any window / package the laptop quick launch
buttons (volume up/down, next track etc) are deactivated.

This is not restricted to any particular menu/package and the problem
probably resides in either the package that controls the quick launch
buttons or the package controlling general windows / menu behaviour but
I'm not sure how to find these.

To operate the quick launch bottons you first have to close any open
menus.

If this is not a bug it's a very annoying (non)feature.

[Bug 453099] Re: Latest karmic networkmanager update breaks wifi

2009-10-28 Thread Luftikus
I tried the karmic daily-build live cd from today and have a similar problem
with network-manager 0.7.996. Unfortunately I can't use ubuntu-bug because I
have no network at all when the error occurs.
It seems that the wifi stick connects to the access point but fails to obtain
an ip address. Find attached some files I got from the live environment.

[Bug 217546] Re: Menu is displaying in wrong locale

2009-10-28 Thread Coathanger
It looks like what I originally posed was the way to manually hard-code
the language fields in the .glade file. Attached is an updated diff
file to be used if you want to build from source. This uses the glade
stock_items, which seem to have been removed as part of the patch when
submitted earlier (for music option support).

#mkdir tmp
#cd tmp
#apt-get source gweled

Copy over the replacement diff.gz file on top of the distributed one and
run the following commands:

#cd gweled-0.7
#sudo dpkg-buildpackage -uc -b
#sudo dpkg -i ../gweled_0.7-2ubuntu6_i386.deb

Test it and see if this finally fixes it.

*Disclaimer* - I don't usually do any gnome / gtk / glade development.
I just wanted to fix this for my parents.

** Attachment added: This is a modified version of the karmic released diff
for gweled {

[Bug 462293] Re: Open office creates invisible tables in OO Writer

2009-10-28 Thread Wawrzyniec Niewodniczański
I haven't tried 3.1.1 on Ubuntu, but I just tried to open the file in OO
3.1.1 on Mac. The table is still missing.

One more thing the table is visible in Google Documents, but looks
rather strange.

[Bug 462950] [NEW] todiscgui fails to launch todisc

When you use todiscgui , add the video files etc. nothing happens when you
click on run todisc It should run the todisc utility.

I managed to fix this problem by altering /usr/lib/python2.6/lib-
tk/tkMessageBox.py , adding the penultimate line to the code segment
below:

def _show(title=None, message=None, _icon=None, _type=None, **options):
if _icon and icon not in options:options[icon] = _icon
if _type and type not in options:options[type] = _type
if title: options[title] = title
if message: options[message] = message
res = Message(**options).show()
# In some Tcl installations, Tcl converts yes/no into a boolean

[Bug 462221] Re: evolution freezes on start

2009-10-28 Thread Stephen Rees
I hope I am not wasting your time with this...

It finally loaded up for me and mostly works, but it sometimes just
takes forever to download a simple email. I switched off the
Automatically synchronize remote mail locally option as my IMAP has a
lot of emails in it, cos I thought it was simply having issues with so
many emails on the server.

Any suggestions as of what else I can do to optimize it?

Thanks for the explanation of the possible consequences. I saw this
assertion when my Seagate FreeAgent comes out of a power-saving mode - so
I was not sure if it could cause some more serious issues (e.g. some
earlier kernels lost this device completely when power-saving occurred -
leading to filesystem corruption).

Alexey.

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-openchrome” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed

 Bug description:
I had a problem for the longest time resolving a resolution issue with
Ubuntu on a Gateway MX3225 laptop. The laptop uses a Via chipset for
graphics. I couldn't seem to get the openchrome drivers working at all
through the traditional methods. I am running Ubuntu 8.10, Intrepid Ibex
 with all updates per 1/1/2009.

I installed Mandriva 2009 and configured my xorg.conf and then saved the
file on a flash drive. I then installed Ubuntu, copied the needed
information over to the xorg.conf file, and it worked.

The resolution was set at 1600x1440 or some such resolution (I don't quite
remember right now) right after install. The resolution was also incorrect
 when I booted the LiveCD.

Ubuntu does not automatically detect my resolution for this laptop. I
don't know if it's the graphics chipset or not (I'm assuming it is).

Here's the necessary output and information:

 Useful lspci output:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. CN700/P4M800

[Bug 462959] [NEW] continue and confirm buttons in some dialogs not working

2009-10-28 Thread mavior
Public bug reported:

Body:

As in subject,

I am running the latest rc of xubuntu karmic:
in some dialogs (e.g. in updating software, change perspective and import into
workspace to name some) the buttons OK or Next are clickable but they seems
to get only the hold stage of the button and not the release hover final
stage which should notify the proper controller that the action click on
button succeded.
To get the proper behaviour I need to navigatr with tab to interested button
and then issue an Enter.

With previous distro release there were no problem.

The problem persists with either openjdk and sun jdk.

I think that the bug is much probably due to some change in some
graphical library (api) - gtk ?

I am using latest eclipse downloaded from eclipse.org

This bug could be linked also to this one
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eclipse/+bug/460905 ,even
tough the behaviour is slightly different.

[Bug 460104] Re: Eclipse crashes on installing update

2009-10-28 Thread Rockwalrus
Looks like both logs were done on amd64 machines. Eclipse starts a new
process on launch on that arch, which means that valgrind unfortunately
didn't catch the error. You can force Eclipse to start the jvm in the
same process instead of a new one by giving it the arguments -vm
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/lib/amd64/server/. If you use a jvm
other than openjdk, replace the directory argument by the one containing
libjvm.so for your preferred jvm.

So the commandline would look like this:
G_SLICE=always-malloc G_DEBUG=gc-friendly valgrind -v --tool=memcheck
--leak-check=full --num-callers=40 --smc-check=all --log-file=valgrind.log
/usr/bin/eclipse -vm /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/lib/amd64/server/

[Bug 441100] Re: within chroot, can fail to reload daemon configuration if not running (detects dbus daemon outside of chroot)

2009-10-28 Thread Michael Pardee
The title of this bug is a little confusing, I am trying to deal with
this bug and I almost filed a separate bug with this description:

Upgrades of the dbus package fail unless dbus is running

This is a problem for a number of reasons:

1. if you are running in a chroot, dbus upgrades fail. I imagine this is a
problem in other similar installation or maintenance scenarios, including the
uck package (Ubuntu Customization Kit)
2. if somehow dbus got broken and couldn't start, you could never reinstall or
upgrade it to fix the problem

This can sometimes be worked around by binding /var/run/dbus on the host
system, but what is the upgrade doing over the bus that should really be
happening to the chroot system? If it is nothing important the package
should not die on the error, and if it is important then the package
should be updated to store the necessary bus commands and run them the
next time the bus is active. This was a somewhat smaller problem in
Jaunty and earlier Ubuntu releases that could easily be worked around by
explicitly starting dbus in the chroot, but now with recent init script
updates it detects the dbus process from the host system and won't
start in the chroot. This issue needs to be formally addressed.

error log:
Setting up dbus (1.2.16-0ubuntu9) ...
Installing new version of config file /etc/dbus-1/system.conf ...
The system user `messagebus' already exists. Exiting.
Failed to open connection to system message bus: Failed to connect to socket

[Bug 337759] Re: openerp-server depends on python-xml and is therefore uninstallable ATM

2009-10-28 Thread Raphaël Valyi - http : //www . akretion . com
Hello,

I propose to fix the problem at the source. The trunk version of OpenERP,
expected to stabilize around Q1 1010, is already deprecated XML lib free
(thanks to fellow contribs).

Considering the issue is now worse on Karmic (read that report
https://bugs.launchpad.net/openobject-server/+bug/429519 ), I proposed
to Tiny to backport this fix back to the 5-0 releases of OpenERP. Yes
this is a significant change. However, it's easy to test and will then
behave in predicable ways. I did lot's of tests myself, have been very
careful with the merge (more than Tiny themselves as logs show) and I
just ask for testing heavily, but merging, to fix the issue once for all
for Ubuntu and other modern distros. Also consider that I have been
integrating OpenERP for two years as an OpenERP partner with around 5
success stories so I know a bit about it.

My fixed 5-0 up to date branch is there: https://code.launchpad.net
/~akretion-team/openobject-server/openobject-server_5.0_patches

My merge proposal to Tiny for 5-0 server branch is there:
https://code.launchpad.net/~akretion-team/openobject-server/openobject-server_5.0_patches/+merge/14112

If you think that's the right thing to do, please weight behind me for
the merge into the stable OpenERP branch.

still be nice to get fixed though

[Bug 211631] Re: Network is brought down before network filesystems are unmounted (CIFS timeout at shutdown)

2009-10-28 Thread James
NM 0.8 does not bring down ethernet connections on exit anymore. I
don't think we will be able to something similar for wifi soon. Is that
good enough for this bug?

No. I have a use case of wanting to pack up my laptop up quickly after
using wireless at a client's office where I have to mount a remote
Windows filesystem using Samba. Having your laptop not suspend or
shutdown (or do it such a bad way it's not funny) isn't very good for my
system or for desktop linux (picture a Windows using client interested
in desktop linux and watching a laptop doing this shutdown dance).

What's the reason for not being able to keep wireless up until after
network filesystems are unmounted ?

[Bug 462961] [NEW] auto-resize install renders previous system with separate /boot unbootable

2009-10-28 Thread Martin Pitt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

During Karmic final install testing, I first did a manual partitioning
with a 200 MB /boot (/dev/vda1) and a ~ 5 GB / (/dev/vda5), no swap. In
the next round, I tried the auto-resize mode, which resized /dev/vda5 to
2.7 GB, and created a new /dev/vda6 for / and /dev/vda7 for swap.

/dev/vda1 * 1 24 192748+ 83 Linux
/dev/vda2 25 729 5662912+ 5 Extended
/dev/vda5 25 364 2731018+ 83 Linux
/dev/vda6 365 705 2739051 83 Linux
/dev/vda7 706 729 192748+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris

The newly installed system boots fine, but when I try to boot the
previous one in grub2, it just fails with error: You need to load the
kernel first.

I think this is due to search and linux lines having the same UUID
(that of the old root partition, 3534fc...). search should instead have
the UUID of the old /boot partition (4b294e...). When I manually walk
though the commands in grub, it says error: file not found in the
linux ... step.

[Bug 462961] Re: auto-resize install renders previous system with separate /boot unbootable

2009-10-28 Thread Martin Pitt
The original grub.cfg from the old install was correct
(/boot/grub/grub.cfg on vda5):

### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/10_linux ###
menuentry Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic {
recordfail=1
if [ -n ${have_grubenv} ]; then save_env recordfail; fi
set quiet=1
insmod ext2
set root=(hd0,1)
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 4b294ec9-0fb3-44bd-bc61-7f35ccb52534
linux /vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic

initrd /initrd.img-2.6.31-14-generic
}

However, the one from the new install put the wrong UUID into the search
line:

### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ###
menuentry Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic (on /dev/vda5) {
insmod ext2
set root=(hd0,5)
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 3534fcb7-8b25-4b97-8643-59b566d177d7
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic
