[Bug 94065] Re: init: add non-destructive means to disable a job
This feature is essential before we start moving certain services over to upstart. A example is to be able to start a server running mysql as a slave without mysql starting automatically, as we would need to verify binary log position between the servers first. Installing memcached, but running multiple instances via separate upstart files would allow one to remove the default file, but a package upgrade could replace the missing file, so one would have to edit it, which could cause an unnecessary packaging conflict on upgrade. Being able to script the these settings is required. The above plan sounds perfect, except that it is not implemented yet. Earlier discussion of the above plan: http://www.mail-archive.com /upstart-de...@lists.ubuntu.com/msg00638.html -- init: add non-destructive means to disable a job https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/94065 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I'm experiencing the same thing on 9.10 (Karmic). 2 years later ??! Really? It appears there isn't a libcompizconfig-backend-gconf package any more. And IIRC, I could disable GNOME integration in the past and get the behavior I expect (keybindings persist when I change them), but in Karmic I uncheck the 'Gnome Compatibility' plugin (under General in ccsm) and my window resize bindings are not honored. They are always reverted to the default. Any suggestions? Is this still a bug? [Bug 408016] Re: Xorg crashes when handed bad xrender glyph data
Out on a limb, but the info might help someone :-( I've been tinkering with CentOS v5.4 and compiling wine-1.1.29-fe.tar.bz2 to run my EXE program. I've run up against similar problems (same hardware as above). Versions are: xorg-x11-drv-i810-1.6.5-9.25.el5 xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.1.1-48.67.el5 Just for reference the RedHat package for i810 contains both of the drivers: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/i810_drv.so /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so and I'm using the "intel" driver, although the i810 driver also works on the same hardware. X does NOT crash for me in this configuration, but neither will wine actually run, I merely get the error message: X Error of failed request: BadLength (poly request too large or internal Xlib length error) Major opcode of failed request: 155 (RENDER) Minor opcode of failed request: 20 (RenderAddGlyphs) Serial number of failed request: 76507 Current serial number in output stream: 76512 If you check upstream ... http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/tree/render/render.c ... you can see there is no NULL pointer check on pDstPix around line 1160 so I can't explain why the RedHat version does not crash in the same place, don't have time to go through it with a fine tooth comb. Still waiting for some patch that will prevent wine from delivering the bad glyph data in the first place. Here is an old bug report from 2003 were similar problems were evident (and no fix found back then either). http://www.mail-archive.com/xfre...@xfree86.org/msg06098.html Some Russian guy is coming up with almost exactly the same error using Kubuntu 9.10 + Wine 1.1.34 http://linuxforum.ru/index.php?s=ded24b144d5aca3620acdab78ec69455&showtopic=106168&pid=990715&st=0entry990715 Another wine bug (this time from only a few month ago, from a Russian using fedora 11 and wine 1.1.29) http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19986 I just have to quote the resolution of wine bug 19986: "Most likely bad video drivers. Wine is a user app and by definition can not crash X server. Invalid." As they say, "you can learn a lot, just by looking" but Oh Boy! It is so difficult to get people to look. Maybe someone can have a good laugh out of all this. I'm off to have a cry now. Does launchpad offer a tissuebox feature? Probably it should... ** Bug watch added: Wine Bugzilla #19986 http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19986 ** Also affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel via http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19986 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown -- Xorg crashes when handed bad xrender glyph data https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/408016 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 491521] Re: Decorations and RGBA
Andrea Cimitan is right, I've experienced problems with Pidgin, Transmission, Sonata (with tray icon enabled), Ario, Banshee (The problem isn't the tray icon, or at least I wouldn't expect so because other GTK# apps work properly, like Tomboy), Deluge (though shows its tray icon properly), and Liferea. All of these are ones I'd expect to have problems with because of having a tray icon and they are the same ones that don't work when you just force an RGBA colormap for all GTK apps. [Bug 420900] Re: grub2 error detecting Fedora"initrd"
Ok, I made it work by changing the line : initrdname=$(echo "$kernfile" | sed "s/vmlinu[zx]/initrd\*/") to initrdname="$(echo "$kernfile" | sed "s/vmlinu[zx]/init\*/").img" With this change, the script is now looking for the file name init*[kernel version].img, instead of initrd[kernel version]. It works for now, but still not perfect for generic use. I have to use " .img " instead of " .* " because some kernel version numbers have an extra ".PAE" in them. Using " .* " has caused multiple matches. I am looking for a way to have the script matching either ".img" or ".gz" without adding any "if", so the script can be for generic use, not specific to fedora. -- grub2 error detecting Fedora"initrd" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/420900 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 501971] Re: After shutdown, and after re-login, amarok lost its voice, there is no audio.
Thanks for the bug report, Ken. Even though you installed phonon-4.4.3 earlier, if you don't restart phonon, which probably doesn't happen until you reboot your computer, then you're not running the new version. It seems like you might have a problem with the new version. Some debugging questions: Do other apps have their audio working? If not, can you check and make sure the upgrade didn't reset your volume controls to muted or really low volume? If these don't work, start going through the suggestions here[1] for troubleshooting your sound, and consider this page [2] for its resources as well. In the meantime, you can try installing the old version of phonon and see if that fixes things. If so, it should be pretty easy to figure out which change caused the problem you're having. [Bug 502219] Re: Kernel errors triggered with SSD storage
you asked in Bug 445852 if this might be a duplicate of that bug; try the workaround listed in comment 136 https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/445852/comments/136 (though there's a typo) -- here it is, corrected: 1) Run the following command. It renames the existing file to devkit- disks-probe-ata-smart.bak and tells the package manager to install any new updates to the _changed_ file name: $ sudo dpkg-divert --divert --add --rename --divert /lib/udev/devkit- disks-probe-ata-smart.bak /lib/udev/devkit-disks-probe-ata-smart If you want to see your new divert (and others in the system): $ sudo dpkg-divert --list 2) Now create a dummy file using nano (substitute gedit or another editor for nano if you prefer). $ sudo nano /lib/udev/devkit-disks-probe-ata-smart Type the following three lines into the file then save it and exit the editor: #!/bin/bash # exit 0 3) Make the new dummy file executable so udev can run it: $ sudo chmod 755 /lib/udev/devkit-disks-probe-ata-smart - If this workaround does not change your problem (or when the bug in libatasmart gets fixed) you will want to remove the dummy file and the divert entry by executing these two commands: $ sudo rm /lib/udev/devkit-disks-probe-ata-smart $ sudo dpkg-divert --rename --remove /lib/udev/devkit-disks-probe-ata-smart -- Kernel errors triggered with SSD storage https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/502219 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 213895] Re: Ubuntu failes to work with KVM switch
I've got two dfferent kvm switches & neither work very well with Ubuntu. I've tried all the different versions from 9.10 going back to 7.04. The monitor is only recognized if I boot from the first port so a live CD will only work if I'm connected to the first port. If I modify or as in 9.10 create an xorg.conf file I can make things work where Ubuntu can be used on a port other than the first one but it must be booted with that port active or else there will be a blank screen when I change to it. Once Ubuntu recognizes the screen I can switch back & forth with the KVM with no problems. Windows doesn't have that problem so I assume its a combination of the KVM switch & how Ubuntu recognizes the monitor. I'm using: 4-port Aluratek AKSP04 2-port Trendnet TK-200 both are for VGA monitor & ps2 mouse & keyboard -- Ubuntu failes to work with KVM switch https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/213895 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 502127] Re: folder name contain "#" sign - amarok does not play media files
Thanks for reporting this bug, Adam. It turns out that it was just recently reported to the Amarok devs on their mailing list too[1], so they talked about it a bit there. The bug appears to be one in the phonon backends, specifically the gstreamer backend. Try switching to the xine backend, which seems to work better anyway. It's the one that Amarok devs recommend. For a more long-term solution, we need a new version of Phonon pulled into Ubuntu 10.04, which should be happening automatically anyway. The bugfix was included there, and the patch was committed to SVN on 2009-06-18 [2]. To ensure that this happens smoothly, please give one of the later lucid alphas a shot (live CD should be fine) and see if the bug is still around then. Practically linear speedups should be perfectly possible. And the benefits are real: on large collections, the runtime can be many minutes or hours. I have 4 cores which are generally not doing much; why can't they all be used to cut the runtime by half or more? I looked into running 4 findimagedupes concurrently and then using --merge to bring together their results, but this is deeply hacky and I worry about race-conditions and data consistency in the ultimate fingerprint database; parallelism is something the application should be handling internally. ** Affects: findimagedupes (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- findimagedupes should be parallelizable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/502224 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 212491] Re: Live CD, first screen, Hebrew not correctly displayed
This looks pretty nice, and I'm minded to apply something similar. Thanks! A few comments, though: * Could you 'bzr branch lp:~ubuntu-core-dev/gfxboot-theme-ubuntu/mainline bidi' (or whatever branch name you choose), commit your changes there, push them to a branch on Launchpad, and create a merge proposal? That way you can be properly credited in revision control history, and we can do patch review more easily. * Please use the form "(LP: #nn)" to close Launchpad bugs, and use the correct bug number too. :-) Forms such as "closes: Malone #nn" have been deprecated for several years. * Are you sure that this works as well for Arabic as it does for Hebrew? I don't read or write either language, but I've worked with people who do, and I'm told that Arabic script needs a shaping algorithm to apply connections between letters. Without shaping, my understanding is that it looks amateurish at best and is likely to be difficult to read. * The string equality operator in Perl is 'eq', not '==' which is for numeric equality. $ perl -le 'print "hello" if "ar" == "he"' hello * It would be better to use safe opens rather than unsafe shell constructs; not that I actively distrust translators or anything, but I don't think it's generally a good idea to pass translations through the shell where a misplaced double quote could cause disaster. Instead of messing around escaping shell metacharacters, I think it would be better to do something like this (completely untested): use IPC::Open2; # at top of program my $pid = open2(\*BIDI_OUT, \*BIDI_IN, 'fribidi', '--nopad', '--nobreak'); print BIDI_IN $txt; close BIDI_IN; { local $/ = undef; $txt = ; } # might have to fiddle with trailing newlines waitpid $pid, 0; Could you adjust your patch along these lines? Thanks again. -- Live CD, first screen, Hebrew not correctly displayed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/212491 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
