[Bug 584446] [NEW] Lua support disabled on 64-bit architectures

2010-05-22 Thread Guillaume Melquiond
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: scite

In 2008, Lua support was disabled due to a FTBFS. I don't know how
limiting a change it was for version 1.76, but for version 2, it makes
Scite completely useless (at least for me) since it relies heavily on
Lua. I have successfully built the package on amd64 after removing the
three corresponding lines at the top of debian/rules. Please consider
reenabling Lua support.

[Bug 579764] Re: Computer fails to completely boot hangs at tty login

2010-05-22 Thread Marshall Scorcio
This bug affects my machine too.
It started to occur randomly after I upgraded to Lucid.
If I login and run "sudo start gdm" then gdm starts up correctly.

Onboard nVidia GeForce 6150.
64bit Ubuntu 10.04
gdm 2.30.2-0ubuntu1

As you can see, I upgraded to the gdm package in ubuntu-proposed but
that did not fix the issue.

It looks like X.org is trying to start before the nVidia kernel module
is loaded. X.org fails at 06:08:19 and the kernel module does not seem
to be loaded until 06:08:21

[Bug 584443] [NEW] OpenJdk / IcedTea6 1.8 garbage collection deadlock

2010-05-22 Thread Andreas Hahn
Public bug reported:

OpenJdk / IcedTea6 1.8 performs infinite subsequent garbage collections.

Tomcat does not respond anymore as the gc restarts immediately again in an
endless loop although enough memory is allocated and still available.
For details please see the attached gc log.

Environment is Amd64, Ubuntu 10.04, OpenJDK6, Tomcat6.
Installation as recommended in the Ubuntu Server Guide.

Java signature:
java version "1.6.0_18"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.8) (6b18-1.8-0ubuntu1)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.0-b16, mixed mode)

Ubuntu:
Description:Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Release:10.04

[Bug 584438] [NEW] (Scim) Input support requires irrelevant packages

gimp-help-en
gnome-user-guide-en

I already had gimp installed and it was happy the way it was without
this crap.

I don't have room for these useless packages and I really don't have
bandwidth to be downloading them on my dialup-like Clearwire connection.
This is not an isolated problem. There are a lot of nonsensical
dependencies for packages in ubuntu, but this one is pretty outstanding
as language input has nothing to do with the above files.

[Bug 554622] Re: All wine file-extension associations not removed after "aptitude purge wine"

2010-05-22 Thread Scott Ritchie
I believe Wine is making the associations when it's run rather than at
package-install time so it's going to be a user-specific thing and isn't
actually a packaging bug but rather a Wine bug. So we need to open an
upstream discussion to talk about how to handle this properly.

It fits into the more general problem of it being difficult to manage
Wine-based programs on Open With.

[Bug 571444] Re: Boot hangs and unable to continue when automount disk in fstab is not available (Off or Disconnected)

2010-05-22 Thread Israel Vaughn
This happened to me because for some reason 10.04 does not load the
wireless modules prior to attempting to connect to network shares that
are in fstab. The network (samba) shares are not able to be found and
then the boot just hangs. No shell, nothing, I can only reboot or use
the work around, thanks OP for the workaround!

This is an extremely serious bug for any non-power user, as fstab must
be edited to fix the initial problem, and it basically makes an upgraded
system unusable.

I followed the first option from that link you provided and it worked!

After verifying it worked first by adding "i915.modeset=1" after "quiet

terminal window

echo options i915 modeset=1 | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf
sudo update-initramfs -u

Thanks for your advice.

[Bug 461419] Re: [Karmic Lucid] Atheros AR5211 - ath5k driver connection and performance issues

2010-05-22 Thread Asrivas
I was having random and frequent freezes/crashes with 2.6.32-22-generic lucid
and network manager on my t41p with ar5212 chipset.
I removed network manager and installed wicd. That seems to have got rid of
freezes crashes. But then it would connect fine at home with a wap2 ap but not
at a friends place with a normal non encrypted ap. It would just not see any
wireless network.

Going to command line and doing the following as root fixed it.
# to view available wireless
iwlist wlan0 scan
# to connect to a an ap ssid1
iwconfig wlan0 essid ssid1
# to get ip address
dhclient3 wlan0 &

  10. Add your computer

You should be connected after you follow these steps. If you are not
connected, can you please attach your ubuntuone logs to this bug. Please
zip your $HOME/.cache/ubuntuone/log/ folder and attach the zip here.

You can attach logs to this bug report by clicking the 'Add Attachment

[Bug 567805] Re: Lucid: system freezes randomly possibly due to bug on radeon drm module

2010-05-22 Thread Daniel Dickinson
I have confirmed this is not faulty hardware. I have used a similar
video card with the same result. (That is I orginally reported with an
ATI Radeon X1900 and thought it might be hardware so tried and ATI
X1950).

Also, turning off all desktop effects stops the bug from occurring
(probably because the drm module isn't being used much as a result).

[Bug 584202] Re: [Lucid] [ATi Mobility Radeon X1600]GL renderer not installed, firefox crashes at flash video maximization, compiz effects broke

2010-05-22 Thread Kenneth Wee
Did some extra digging,

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Drivers
Followed the instructions to install fglrx drivers.

When I ran the command:
sudo update-alternatives --config gl_conf

An interesting list shows up:
Nvidia driver is at priority 9700
fglrx driver is at priority 1000
Vesa driver is at priority 600 (Can't remember exact)

This probably means the driver I'm using now is nvidia running on my ATi
mobility radeon card. Don't understand how it works but it has been
working ever since I upgraded.

Subsequently, I switched to fglrx (manual) and followed the
instructions.

When I ran the command:
aticonfig --initial

Output:
Compatible adaptor not found

I then restarted the system
It seemed to work, except the screen resolution is a bit screwed(no wide-screen
ratio)
But effects still doesn't seem to work, didn't try blender nor ran diagnostics
for checks.

So I changed back to nvidia through the terminal.
When I switched back, some new messages popped:
failed to create /usr/lib32/vdpau/libdvpau_nvdia.so.1
libdvpau_nvdia.so.1 not found
failed to create /usr/lib32/vdpau/libdvpau_nvdia.so
libdvpau_nvdia.so not found

I checked into /usr/lib/nvidia-current/vdpau/
there is a link to both files, but the link seem to link to some non-existent
library.

I restarted again this time after switching.
This time it screwed up my graphical interface.
After the purple screen boot up to desktop, my screen went blank.
Instinctively I tried ctrl+alt+F1. It went to console, works.
Tried back ctrl+alt+F7. It went back to desktop, with the colours extremely
broken. It seems certain colours are out of range and displayed very weirdly.
Screen aspect ratio is also wrong.

Tried to install back the driver packages through synaptics to
ATi/Nvidia, was a failure. I'm stuck with a faulty display desktop in
Lucid, that makes reading a little bit more than inconvenient for the
eyes.

Subsequently, I installed Karmic back side-by-side. Karmic works fine,
at this time of writing. I'm laying my Lucid dormant until, hopefully,
someone with better expertise could help with this issue.

[Bug 574137] Re: Toshiba NB30500F pulseaudio problem

2010-05-22 Thread jim_charlton
Just to clear the air a bit and make sure that I am not misleading
anyone with false impressions (often the case)...

I took my Toshiba nb305 and wiped the Ubuntu partition and reinstalled
lucid 10.04 from a USB key as previously. I tried the sound by turning
on the system sound (Ubuntu), opening a terminal window and holding down
the back arrow at the CLI prompt. The sound is fine.

Now I
1) sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
2) Change: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash nohz=off highres=off"
3) save and sudo update-grub

I have to do this to get the machine to boot quickly and to suspend/re-
awaken when I close/open the lid. I cannot change the SATA BIOS
parameter to compatibility from AHCI as I am dual booting with Windows 7
and using compatibility instead of AHCI craps up my Windows partition.

But here is the catch 22. After putting nohz=off and highres=off on the
GRUB command line, the sound no longer works It appears to have had
nothing to do with Twinkle installation (see messages above). If I
remove the highres=off from the command line, the sound becomes
normal but then I can't recover from suspend.

So What do the nohz=off and highres=off parameters do? Is
highres=off turning off high resolution timers? Why does the sound get
restored to normal when I shut off pulseaudio? Can I compile pulseaudio
in a way such that it is not susceptible to these high resolution timer
issues?

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 516040] Re: dovecot sieve plugin renamed from cmusieve to sieve

2010-05-22 Thread Bill Weinel
>Fatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf
>[fail]
>Line 691 in dovecot.conf says:sieve=~/.dovecot.sieve

I experienced this same issue after a distro upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04
LTS. I found that this problem is being caused during upgrades from
earlier versions by retaining the old dovecot.conf file during the
upgrade. A number of config statements have been moved around in the
dovecot.conf file for the new version included in 10.04 LTS causing the
old dovecot.conf file to be incompatible. The solution is to use the
latest version of the dovecot.conf file included with the distro during
upgrade and then manually add your local configuration changes. Examples
of the new format are included and loaded during the upgrade in the
etc/dovecot directory for ucf-dist, db, dict-sql, sql, and ldap.

Cheers

[Bug 577038] Re: [regression] hard lock in openoffice when opening files from a remote NFS volume

2010-05-22 Thread Chris Cheney
I can't reproduce this problem saving to nfs on a Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
client connected to a nfs server running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

What operating system is running on the nfs server? What is the export
line from the server for the filesystem you are getting the lockup on?
Also what is the mount options on the client? The output from running
'mount' for the nfs share would be useful to see as well.

Thanks,

Chris

[Bug 548444] Re: items can't be selected and no context menu

2010-05-22 Thread Russ Tokuyama
This happens in View as Detailed List view.
Double-click on a folder to enter it.
Return to the parent folder.
Can't open any folders in the parent folder.
Context menu has Open, etc., but doesn't work correctly.
Open doesn't open the folder,
Opening in another Tab or Window opens the parent folder; not the selected
child folder.
Properties takes the properties of the parent's parent folder; not the select
child folder.

Can go up to parent's parent folder but not into child folders.

The workaround is to switch the view to Icons or Compact Lists.

I've notice this problem with Thunar, too.

[Bug 483812] Re: Pulseaudio will not route internal/external mic to the speakers/headphones Karmic

2010-05-22 Thread vocx
Kurt,

It is only a regression if pulseaudio worked before but it doesn't work
now. As per the comment #1, it may seem that this feedback capability is
not in pulseaudio at all. To anyone reading this, remember that in
previous versions of Ubuntu the default audio server was Alsa, and when
it changed to pulseaudio it broke many things for many users (but not
for me, if I must say).

But, well, I wouldn't know exactly, since I don't even have a microphone
and only a few times I've tried to use one. I found this bug report
accidentally while trying to solve a different problem, but I provide a
workaround using the Jack audio server that may work.

1. Install "qjackctl", a Qt frontend for the Jack Audio Connection Kit.
2. It will pull some dependencies, specially the "jackd" package which is the
Jack server/daemon proper.
3. Open "qjackctl" and start the server. Hopefully it will work with the
default values, otherwise you may need to click "Setup" and adjust the settings.
4. There is some documentation for Ubuntu:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToJACKConfiguration
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToQjackCtlConnections But perhaps a better
documentation is found in the Jack Wiki http://trac.jackaudio.org/wiki
5. Essentially, adjust the controls (specially frame) to reduce the latency as
much as possible, for instance from 50 ms to 11 ms. Also check that there are
no XRUNs in the "Messages" and the "Status" windows in the main interface.
6. If the server seems to run okay, click "Connect".
7. In the "Audio" tab click on "system" in the "Readable Clients / Output
Ports" and on "system" in the "Writeable Clients / Input Ports" windows. These
represent the "sources" and "sinks" of audio.
8. Click "Connect". A line should be drawn indicating that the sound from the
"capture" devices (microphone) is routed to the "playback" devices (speakers).
9. Every program that uses the Jack server will place different output and
input ports and these may be wired as desired. For example, if Skype supports
the Jack sever, it would be possible to use "capture" -> "Skype" and "capture"
-> "playback", or perhaps "capture" -> "Skype" -> "playback", to send the sound
to both Skype and the speakers.

In summary, this method worked for me but it may not be ideal for every
case or may not work at all. Also, I think that if Jack is running and
you have outputs routed to the playback devices, other audio programs
may not work at all because the playback resources are already used.
This happened for me with Audacious.

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2010-05-22 Thread manzdagratiano
I have been ardently working towards fixing this bug locally here at
Rutgers, NJ. My fiancée was the first one to discard windows for Ubuntu
because she clearly noticed the performance difference between windows
and Ubuntu in installations having existed parallel for a long time. My
future father-in-law was also very impressed with Ubuntu's performance
after I salvaged his Asus netbook with Ubuntu post a windows crash. None
of us are ever buying a computer pre-installed with Windows, with two
new ones from Dell already coming with Ubuntu. My colleagues at work are
also gradually switching, considering the lumbering leviathan windows 7
is - seriously, 15 GB for the OS itself??? - and hopefully the word
shall propagate outwards throughout starting from the Physics department

[Bug 578303] Re: mlocate does not work as expected on encrypted disks

2010-05-22 Thread bitinerant
As I understand it, this is intentional! I agree that in theory this
aught to work, but mlocate would need to be completely redesigned to
address the security issue. Note that 'ecryptfs' is in the 'PRUNEFS='
line of the default /etc/updatedb.conf file. I suppose you could edit
this file to 'fix' this problem, but know that your encrypted metadata
(file and directory names) will be readable by anyone who steals your
computer. See:

[Bug 579568] Re: Truncates text when copying to clipboard

2010-05-22 Thread Russ Tokuyama
I've also experienced a selection created by a click at a starting point
followed by shift+click at the ending point to not be copied. When
pasting, the previous selection created by dragging over the desired
text is still in the clipboard and is pasted instead of the new
selection.

I've noticed this behavior in lxterminal and xfce-terminal.

[Bug 414996] Re: [karmic] grub re-writes boot sector on wrong drive on fresh install

2010-05-22 Thread manzdagratiano
I have so far installed karmic, along with grub2, on three computers,
and reinstalled on two, and have not had this problem there - just with
lucid. Maybe the nomination for karmic should be declined? Also, any
workarounds for this during the installation itself? I feel extreme
inertia in trying to fix this issue again post-install through a command
line grub or even the other options I have tried before. Needless to say
I am anxious to have lucid up and running on both my machines :D

[Bug 544358] Re: "copy" does not work when doing selection with "shift" key

2010-05-22 Thread Russ Tokuyama
I've also noted this behavior with lxterminal and xfce4-terminal.

I agree that there is some connection between this bug and bug #57568.
If you drag to make a selection and then expand the selection using
shift+left click, when you copy and paste you get only the part that was
selected using the drag gesture.

[Bug 414996] Re: [karmic] grub re-writes boot sector on wrong drive on fresh install

2010-05-22 Thread manzdagratiano
okay... I think the issue might be more subtle. I tried installing lucid
again via usb, hoping to be able to select the correct drive in the
advanced options in the installation procedure... what I instead find is
that when in livecd mode, gparted reveals my usb drive as /dev/sda,
which I believe is selected as the default drive to install grub to,
while my hard drive is /usb/sdb. I expect that after installation, this
might be humongously problematic, since when the usb is removed, the
hard disk would be reported as /dev/sda? Even though fstab would be set
up using uuids as opposed to device location, many things, including
grub, should expect to face issues upon update?

I also think this is closely related to the following bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/565189

Since this issue is not present in grub2 in karmic, this is certainly a
regression.

[Bug 584422] [NEW] fresh install of ubuntu on netbook hangs on bootup

2010-05-22 Thread cpadwick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: base-installer

I installed UNE on my emachines netbook. The install was performed from
a flash USB drive. The install proceeded and completed normally and I
was prompted to reboot. I took out the USB drive and rebooted. Ubuntu
would not boot, all I saw was a blinking cursor. Numerous tries at
powering on and off resulted in the same behavior.

I got it to work by actually inserting the USB drive into a USB slot,
powering on the machine, and going into the BIOS to change the boot
order so it would boot from the hard disk first, and usb drive second.
Then it worked fine.

So for some reason it appears to be searching for the USB drive upon
first boot up. Subsequent boot ups work fine without the USB drive in
place.
